Τέκνα, γονείς και χιμπατζήδες

Και ο αναγνώστης θα βρει τον εαυτό του ανίκανο να ταυτιστεί με κάποιον από τους πρωταγωνιστές, παρά την παροδική συμπάθεια που η εύστοχη πρόζα του συγγραφέα θα του προκαλέσει. Αντικρουόμενα συναισθήματα και μια γραφή απογυμνωμένη από κάθε συναίσθημα, αιχμηρή σαν χειρουργικό νυστέρι, θα οδηγήσουν σε μια τραγικά αναπάντεχη και αιματοβαμμένη κορύφωση το τρίπρακτο αυτό ψυχολογικό δράμα, διοχετεύοντας εντέλει δικαίως τη συμπόνια μας αποκλειστικά... στους χιμπατζήδες.

nació en Ribadesella (Asturias) en 1972. Es ingeniero de minas y licenciado en Filología Inglesa. En 2005 participó en la recopilación Ficciones, publicada por la editorial Edaf en colaboración con la Asociación Colegial de Escritores, y el mismo año obtuvo el premio Asturias Joven de Narrativa por su libro 3 relatos. Dos años después resultó ganador del XXXVI Concurso de Cuentos Ignacio Aldecoa. Su primera novela, El hermano de las moscas (Salto de Página, 2008) fue finalista del Premio Celsius a la mejor novela fantástica en la Semana Negra de Gijón y obtuvo el premio Xatafi-Cyberdark al mejor libro de ficción fantástica de ese año. También en 2008, y en la misma editorial, publicó Como una historia de terror, conjunto de relatos que obtuvo una excelente acogida de crítica y público y por el que mereció el Premio Ojo Crítico de Narrativa 2008. En 2010, de nuevo en Salto de Página, publicó la colección de relatos Bajo el influjo del cometa, ganadora del XXXII Premio Tigre Juan. Su última novela es Padres, hijos y primates.

Jon Bilbao es un autor que nunca me decepciona. Había leído tres recopilaciones de cuentos: Como una historia de terror, Estrómboli y Física familiar, así como la novela El hermano de las moscas y creo que, junto con Cristina Fernández Cubas, son dos grandes narradores del panorama contemporáneo.

Al igual que en sus cuentos, encontramos aquí elementos de terror dentro de un tono general de realismo cotidiano y, al ser una novela –aunque breve – hay un mayor desarrollo de los personajes y la trama que nos permiten disfrutar de la historia gradualmente.

El protagonista es Joanes, un ingeniero que tiene un negocio de aire acondicionado que está al límite de la quiebra. En estas circunstancias, tiene que viajar con su familia a Cancún, a asistir a la boda de su suegro con una chica joven. La temporada de huracanes interviene en la ecuación, así como el encuentro con un antiguo profesor de la universidad a quien Joanes culpa de sus fracasos.

La naturaleza desatada se convierte en un perfecto telón de fondo para la tormenta que se desata entre los protagonistas, que sienten aflorar sus pulsiones más primitivas.

La estructura narrativa es perfecta, nada sobra, no hay rellenos, no es previsible y no nos da tregua en la lectura hasta que conocemos el final. Excelente retrato de los personajes, cada uno con su ambigüedad moral y sus zonas de sombra. Lo dicho, Jon Bilbao es un estupendo narrador con mucho oficio.

Ο Γιοάνες, είναι στο Μεξικό με τη σύζυγο και την κόρη του για να γιορτάσουν το γάμο του πεθερού του. Όμως, ένας τυφώνας πλησιάζει επικίνδυνα κι υπάρχει εντολή εκκένωσης. Ο Γιοάνες, προαπσθώντας να διαχειριστεί κα΄ποιο πρόβλημα στη δουλειά, φεύγει με το αυτοκίνητο ενώ οι δικοί του επιβιβάζονται στα λεωφορεία για το καταφύγιο. Ενημερώνει τη σύζυγο ότι θα τους προλάβει, αλλά η σύγκρουσή του με έναν χιμπατζή τον καθυστερεί. Όταν επιτέλους βρίσκεται στον αυτκινητόδρομο, υπάρχουν ατέλειωτες ουρές και βλέποντας στην άκρη του δρόμου έναν καθηγητή του από το πανεπιστήμιο με τη γυναίκα του, αποφασίζει να τους πάρει μαζί του για τη Βιγιαδολίδ. Ο δρόμος είναι μακρύς και τα απρόοπτα δε λείπουν.

Σε αυτή την πρώτη μου επαφή με τον συγγραφέα, ένιωθα έντονα το άγχος που προκαλεί η αναμονή του τυφώνα κι είχαμε έναν ήρωα που παλεύει με το άγχος της επαγγελματικής απόδοσης, την υποτίμηση από την πλευρά του πεθερού μα και την διαίσθηση, ότι ο παλιός του καθηγητής συνέβαλε στην όποια αποτυχία του. Η πρόζα του Bilbao είναι στακάτη και οριακά απρόσωπη, χωρίς συναισθήματα κι ενώ οι άλλοι ανδιρκοί χαρακτήρες είναι επιβλητικοί και χειριστικοί, ο Γιοάνες μοιάζει άβουλος απέναντί τους. Κι όταν οι συμπτώσεις πάρουν ένα σκοτεινό μονοπάτι, τότε κι η πιο άβουλη ψυχή, μπρεί να συμπεριφερθεί απρόβλεπτα.
Πόσο εύκολα μπορούν οι καταστάσεις, το άγχος και η συσωρευμένη απογοήτευση να διαμορφώσουν χαρακτήρες;
Και πόσο εύκολα το θύμα γίνεται θύτης?

Ενδιαφέρουσα γραφή που σε αιχμαλωτίζει...

El escenario de esta novela es la ciudad de Cancún, que en medio del caos a causa de un huracán, sirve como catalizador para poner a prueba el sentido ético y moral de sus protagonistas. No hay buenos ni malos en esta historia, solo supervivientes que sacan lo mejor y peor de sí para sobrevivir a la vorágine.

Στεγνό, λιτό, οριακά απρόσωπο αλλά γεμάτο πρόσωπα, το βιβλιαράκι αυτό μπορεί να μιλήσει στην καρδιά σας, μπορεί όμως να μιλήσει στον αρχέγονο εγκέφαλό σας, στα βαθιά κοιμισμένα ένστικτα επιβίωσης που έχουν ναρκωθεί από έναν κάπως μαλθακό τρόπο ζωής.
Άνθρωποι κινούνται με αργούς ρυθμούς στα πλαίσια μιας εξωφρενικής ιστορίας,τοποθετημένοι εκεί απλά, σαν πιόνια, υπακούωντας στις ορέξεις ενός συγγραφέα που έχει πολλά να πει, αλλά προτιμάει να αφήσει τον αναγνώστη να τα βρει μόνος του, σαν ένας βόας που, νωχελικά, γλιστράει στο έδαφος και ψάχνει νεοσσούς που έχουν πέσει από τις φωλιές τους.

Τέκνα, Γονείς και Χιμπατζήδες, Jon Bilbao, εκδ. Carnivora

Οι σαρκοβόρες εκδόσεις έκαναν πάλι το θαύμα τους! Επέστρεψαν με ένα δυνατό κοινωνικοπολιτικό θρίλερ, που σηκώνει πολλές συζητήσεις. Μια νουβέλα βαθιά ατμοσφαιρική, με έντονο το αίσθημα της αγωνίας & του εγκλεισμού, που με τον επικείμενο χαλασμό -καιρικά & κοινωνικά- γεννά την απελπισία τόσο σε ήρωες όσο & σε αναγνώστριες/ες. Η καθοδική πορεία του ανθρώπου, με κορύφωση τη βίαιη έκφρασή της είναι μονόδρομος.

Ο συγγραφέας χωρίζοντας το έργο σε 3 μέρη κι επιλέγοντας πρόσωπα & τοποθεσίες με απόλυτη προσοχή κι ακρίβεια, στέλνει ένα ηχηρό μήνυμα στον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο.

Πρόγονοι και απόγονοι δημιουργούν έναν κύκλο αποκαλύπτοντας τη ζοφερή πραγματικότητα. Από το πρώτο μας βήμα στη Γη μέχρι το πρώτο μας βήμα στη Σελήνη, ίσως δεν άλλαξαν και πολλά. Το ένστικτο της επιβίωσης είναι αυτό που καθορίζει πάντα τις ενέργειές μας, καθώς πάντοτε θα τοποθετούμε στην κορυφή της πυραμίδας την προσωπική μας επιτυχία κι ευτυχία. Άλλωστε στη βάση μας παραμένουμε ίδια, μια εξελιγμένη μορφή των χιμπατζήδων.

Παρόλα αυτά ο Μπιλμπάο δε θα λέγαμε πως είναι εκπρόσωπος του μηδενισμού, αυτό άλλωστε το αφήνει για την επόμενη γενιά. Ο ίδιος χρησιμοποιώντας στοχευμένα ανθρώπους-σύμβολα, έρχεται να καταγγείλει τον μισαναπηρισμό, την ανάγκη της νεότερης γενιάς να αποδείξει στην προηγούμενη, τα κακώς κείμενα της επιστήμης αλλά και τη θεώρηση αυτής ανάλογα με τα συμφέροντά μας, θυμίζοντας πως οι άνθρωποι της Δύσης και δη οι λευκοί άντρες κατέχουν προνόμια & θέσεις ισχύος. Αντιπαραθέτοντας δύο γεγονότα επισημαίνει τον ρόλο της κοινωνίας, τον τρόπο με τον οποίο μπορεί να σταθεί απέναντι στην κτηνωδία ενώ τονίζει το φαινόμενο του κοινωνικού αποκλεισμού. Οι ρόλοι δεν έχουν αλλάξει και πολύ, άνθρωποι που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ως δούλοι και κρίθηκαν ως άγριοι, συνεχίζουν να αντιμετωπίζονται με τον ίδιο ακριβώς τρόπο.

Ζητήματα σημαντικά γίνονται ασήμαντα, συνειδήσεις διχάζονται & η επικείμενη καταστροφή πλησιάζει. Τα στοιχεία του πολιτισμού οφείλουν να οπισθοχωρήσουν, ήρθε η ώρα οι άνθρωποι να αναμετρηθούν με τη φύση, τους εαυτούς τους αλλά και τους ανθρώπους γύρω τους, με ό,τι αυτό συνεπάγεται.

Και ο άνθρωπος τραβά
προς τη δόξα ξανά.

Ωραιότατο βιβλιαράκι, για Ισπανό οικογενειάρχη που κάνει διακοπές στο Μεξικό, πάει να βρει την οικογένεια του σε άλλη πολη ενώ ένας τυφώνας πλησιάζει, συναντάει κάποιον από το παρελθόν του στο δρόμο και η κατάσταση περιπλέκεται εν μέσω τυφώνα, διακοπής ρεύματος, κίνησης.

Διαβάζεται πολύ γρήγορα, έχει δράση, έχει όμως και βάθος, αναλύεται καλά η ψυχολογία του πρωταγωνιστή, υπάρχουν κάποια mind games που παίζει ένας χαρακτήρας, γενικά έτοιμο για ταινία το βιβλίο. Θα ήθελα ίσως λίγο περισσότερη περιγραφή και ανάλυση ψυχολογίας προς το τέλος για να το νιώσω ακόμα περισσότερο. Πολύ καλό!

Μερικές φορές όταν θες κάτι πολύ, το σύμπαν όντως συνωμοτεί για να το αποκτήσεις! Πριν μερικές εβδομάδες κοιτούσα στο Amazon ένα βιβλίο του Jon Bilbao, με τίτλο Padres, hijos y primates. Η σύνοψη του βιβλίου μου είχε εξάψει πολύ την περιέργεια, ωστόσο όταν έψαξα το βιβλίο στην ελληνική αγορά διαπίστωσα μετά λύπης μου ότι δεν υπήρχε μεταφρασμένο. Πως έτυχε λοιπόν και την επόμενη μέρα είδα το story στο Instagram των σαρκοβόρων εκδόσεων, για ένα βιβλίο υπό έκδοση, με τον τίτλο «Τέκνα, Γονείς και Χιμπατζήδες». Αμέσως τα καμπανάκια άρχισαν να χτυπάνε στο μυαλό μου. Λες; Και ναι, ήταν όντως το βιβλίο που την προηγούμενη κιόλας αναζητούσα και δεν υπήρχε!

Το «Τέκνα, Γονείς και Χιμπατζήδες» δεν είναι μια τυπική και συνηθισμένη ιστορία, σίγουρα όμως είναι μια ιστορία που τραβά και που αξίζει την προσοχή μας, από την αρχή έως το τέλος. Ο Μπιλμπάο έχει χτίσει μια σφιχτή πλοκή με πολύ όμορφα δομημένους χαρακτήρες, η οποία πλέκεται γύρω από μια τεταμένη και ηλεκτρισμένη ατμόσφαιρα. Με την πένα του ο συγγραφέας καταφέρνει να ενεργοποιήσει όλες μας τις αισθήσεις, προσφέροντας μας ένα πολύ δυνατό τελικό αποτέλεσμα, που σαγηνεύει τις αισθήσεις, όπως κάθε τι εξωτικό.

Ένας γάμος, μια οικογένεια, ένα τροχαίο ατύχημα, ένας χιμπαντζής, ένας τυφώνας και τ��εις άνθρωποι «φυλακισμένοι» στο παρελθόν και τα πάθη τους. Μια φαινομενικά απλή ιστορία που την επιδεινώνουν τα μυστικά, η ένταση, τα απωθημένα και η επιβαρυμένη από τον κονιορτό του τυφώνα ατμόσφαι��α, για να την οδηγήσουν τελικά σε ένα μη βιώσιμο άκρο, τόσο σωματικά όσο και ψυχολογικά. Χαρακτήρες γεμάτοι απογοητεύσεις που συσσωρεύουν ηλεκτρική ενέργεια σε όλη την ιστορία και που ξέρεις ότι από στιγμή σε στιγμή θα εκραγούν, σαν ηφαίστεια που κυοφορούν καυτή λάβα, έτοιμη να κατρακυλήσει και να κατακάψει τα πάντα στο διάβα της. Πολιτισμένοι άνθρωποι σε ακραίες καταστάσεις. Πρωτεύοντα θηλαστικά χωρίς γούνα. Χιμπατζήδες!

Ο Μπιλμπάο μας «ταΐζει» μπουκιά-μπουκιά την ιστορία του, με λιτή και άμεση πρόζα, μέχρι που να μη μπορεί να κάνει τίποτα άλλο, παρά μόνο να εξηγηθεί. Να ανοίξει φαρδιά πλατιά τα χαρτιά του, σε ένα φινάλε που, αν και σε πρώτη ματιά υπερβολικό σε σχέση με το βραδύκαυστο της υπόλοιπης ιστορίας, ήταν απολύτως ρεαλιστικό και εν τέλει συγκλονιστικό. Μοναδική «πληγή» το κεφάλαιο όπου υπεραναλύονται -κατά τη γνώμη μου πάντα- η Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη και η «κοσμογονία του Χέρμπιγκερ», θέματα αταίριαστα στο όλο «περιβάλλον» του βιβλίου, ουσιαστικά όμως για τη συνέχεια της ιστορίας, αφού αποτέλεσαν τη «νάρκη» στην οποία πάτησαν οι ήρωες και ακολούθησε η έκρηξη και η αλυσιδωτή αντίδραση αυτής.

Καταλήγοντας, για μένα το «Τέκνα, Γονείς και Χιμπατζήδες» ήταν ένα πολύ ευχάριστο αναγνωστικό ταξίδι, καλογραμμένο, με πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες σκηνές και με κάποιο υπερβατικό προβληματισμό στο βάθος του. Θα μου άρεσε να το δω να μεταφέρεται στη μεγάλη οθόνη. Φέρνω στο νου μου την εξής εικόνα: Ατέλειωτες ουρές αυτοκινήτων, όλα με το ίδιο παχύ καφεκίτρινο χρώμα της σκόνης, «πηγμένα» κάτω από ένα θολωμένο ουρανό και την σκηνή να σβήνει με γκρο πλαν σε τρεις ανθρώπους που κάθονται ιδροκοπώντας, αμίλητοι και σκυθρωποί σε ένα κάποτε μαύρο τζιπ, στο κέντρο αυτής της θάλασσας από μέταλλα και σάρκες.

In Spanish author Jon Bilboa’s taut, tightly written ominous novel, "Still the Same Man," middle-aged Joanes has a chance encounter which leads to a terrible appointment with fate. Joanes was once a top student with a promising career ahead of him, but now in middle age, Joanes, the owner of a dying air-conditioning company, is facing failure. Dependent on the charity of his bombastic, wealthy artist father-in-law, Joanes, his patient wife and his teenage daughter, find themselves in a Mexican resort to attend the “teeth-grindingly tasteless” destination wedding of his obese father-in-law and his new wife, the employee of a tanning salon.

On the night of the wedding, a hurricane alert changes everyone’s plans. Tourists are “desperate to fly out,” and with overcrowded airports, the wedding party has no choice but to move inland. Right before they leave, Joanes is ordered to take a sauna with his loud, crude, father-in-law where he is grilled about a promising looming air-conditioning contract:

"The sauna was, in fact, a typical Mexican temazcal sweat lodge. Right next to the pool, there was a small, dome-shaped adobe construction that looked like an igloo or a bread oven. You entered by a door so tiny you had to crawl in on all fours, so tiny the father-in-law’s great carcass almost got stuck in it. From outside, Joanes spent a moment staring at that fat, tanned, waxed ass, only partially covered by its yellow Speedo, fighting its way through the door, then he averted his gaze."

While everyone else evacuates to Valladolid, Joanes is sidetracked and finds himself driving alone to join his family who are already on safe ground. Along the crowded roads where he joins thousands of other people also trying to escape the hurricane, Joanes spies a couple by the side of the road–an older man and his wheel-chair bound wife. Incredulous, Joanes realizes the man is none other than his old professor–the man he holds responsible for scuttling his career.

The professor has a tale about being ejected from an evacuation bus, and his version of events seems to be missing some salient details. The professor, an autocratic man who sails through life with the attitude that everyone is inferior, at first, doesn’t seem to recognize Joanes–even though Joanes was a stellar student.

Joanes, the professor and his wife, find themselves fleeing the hurricane and seeking refuge in a rudimentary Mexican hotel. With no power, and dying cell phone batteries, tensions between the hurricane evacuees explode. Ironically danger doesn’t come from the hurricane, although the hurricane exists as an unpredicatable background driving our characters relentlessly towards their violent fate. The savagery of nature seems nothing compared to the savagery of humans.

This compulsively readable, shocking novel takes an extremely dark, twisted path in its exploration of damaged psyche, simmering resentments, and horrific revenge. Author Jon Bilboa describes the professor’s absolute, tyrannical power in the classroom and his “aristocratic indifference” towards the students with a painful echo of accuracy. Many of the students hated the professor for the way he demeaned his students. Joanes admired him–a reflection perhaps on the hidden side of Joanes’s nature. But when Joanes’s promising career is snatched away, over time “the professor became
the virtual stooge for Joanes’s problems.” In an apparent act of kindness, Joanes gives the stranded professor and his wife a lift. How can this possibly end well?

Λιγάκι μη ρεαλιστικό το όλο σκηνικό αλλά είναι καθαρό page turner κι αυτό το καταφέρνει με τη γραφή του. Πολύ καλό για να σε βγάλει από ένα reading slump ή αν θες κάτι ανάλαφρο και με ικανοποιητικό (;) τέλος.

Very interesting. I suppose you do what you gotta do to get through, but it felt like a character was missing a bigger leap to how they ended up. Could done that in maybe 10-15 more pages and it would be perfect.

Muy bueno, devorado en una noche y media. Primer libro que leo de Jon Bilbao y no será el último, me ha ganado. "Padre, hijos y primates" es un libro corto pero intenso que atrapa y sobrecoge, que te recuerda lo peor de ti y todo ser humano, odio, ira, venganza... No quiero contaros nada de la trama, pero este libro es toda una experiencia.

The main character Joanes, a failing air conditioning sales person, and his wife and daughter are brought to Cancun, Mexico for his father in law's second marraige to a woman a number of years younger than him. When in Mexico, a hurricane is due to hit the resort causing the holidaymakers to be evacuated. Joanes on the morning of the evacuation takes a drive due to the stress of it being with his father in law for considerable time (i thought saunas were for destressing, evidentally it depends on the company one has in it) and such but comes to trouble as a chimpanzee comes onto the road and he accidentally hits her with his car. Due to waiting and burying the chimpanzee who dies, he misses the evacuation buses. He returns to the hotel and stays the night before the storm in it before his intended.

When eventually he leaves to catch up with his family, on the motorway he sees a couple together, a man waking, his wife in a wheelchair. He stops for them when he recognises that the man was an old college professor, a professor he blames for ruining his life and scuppering a very probably job with an engineering firm. The professor and his wheelchair bound wife were forcibly removed from their own busUnfortunately, the lecturer only recognises Joanes as being a fellow Spaniard.

There is an immediacy to the narrative of Bilbao because of the effect of the weather on it but there is some really wonderful quotes on it, a description of the transparency by wife of her new step mum's nightie being more transparen tthan a window stand out to me. How trustworthy are the characters is up to the reader and probably shouldn't be taken at face value

I thought this was an excellent read, thoroughly engrossing read.

Περίεργο βιβλίο, κάπως άνισο.

Το πρώτο από τα τρία μέρη ο πρωταγωνιστής ο Γιοάνες, εγκλωβίζεται σε ένα τυφώνα στο Μεξικό, και αποκόβεται από την οικογένεια του. Ο πρωταγωνιστής είναι ένα συνηθισμένος, μάλλον μέτριος, μεσήλικας, αρκετά προσιτός και είναι εύκόλο να ταυτιστεί κανείς μαζί του. Η σκιαγράφηση του χαρακτήρα του είναι ενδιαφέρουσα (π.χ. η σχέση με τον πεθερό του). Αυτό το μέρος προϊδεάζει για μία κωμική, ή έστω ευχάριστη, περιπέτεια.

Στο δεύτερο μέρος ο Γιοάνες βρίσκει κατά τύχη έναν παλιό καθτηγή του, και καταλήγουν να αναζητούν μαζί καταφύγιο. Εδώ η σχέση του Γιοάνες με τον καθηγητή του περνάει από διακυμάνσεις. Κάποια κομμάτια δεν με έπεισαν ιδιαίτερα, όπως π.χ. το παρελθόν μεταξύ τους, και ο πάρα πολύ λεπτομερής διάλογος μεταξύ τους στο δωμάτιου του ξενοδοχείου, που είναι εντελώς παράταιρος με το βιβλίο. Το ίδιο και το ατύχημα του γιου του καθηγητή, που τελικά είναι αδιάφορο για τον αναγνώστη.

Στο τρίτο και τελευταίο μέρος οι πρωταγωνιστές εγκλωβίζονται σε ένα παράπηγμα, και είναι σαν να διαβάζουμε ένα καινούργιο βιβλίο από το μηδέν. Η πλοκή γίνεται πολύ γρήγορη, σχεδόν χολυγουντιανή και οι ισσοροπίες αλλάζουν συνεχώς. Παρότι αγωνιώδες, έπιασα τον εαυτό μου να σκέφτεται ότι αυτό το μέρος ακροβατεί μεταξύ σουρεαλισμού και φτηνής φάρσας.

Η κεντρική πλοκή κρατάει τον αναγνώστη, όμως οι περισσότεροι χαρακτήρες δεν είναι πειστικοί (για ποιο λόγο είναι ανώνυμοι; νομίζω θα ήταν καλύτερα αν είχαν ονόματα), κάποιες πλοκές αδιάφορες και άλλες κάπως κραυγαλέες, με αποτέλεσμα ένα ευχάριστο, άλλα ατελές βιβλίο.

Ο Ισπανός Γιον Μπιλμπάο έχει γράψει διάφορα ενδιαφέροντα βιβλία, όπως μια γουέστερν τριλογία, κάτι θρίλερ κ.λπ., αλλά το "Τέκνα, γονείς και χιμπατζήδες" είναι δυστυχώς το μοναδικό βιβλίο του που κυκλοφορεί στα ελληνικά. Και γράφω δυστυχώς, γιατί μου άρεσε αρκετά το βιβλίο αυτό και πολύ θα ήθελα να διαβάσω και άλλα έργα του, και ειδικότερα τη γουέστερν τριλογία του. "Ένας τροπικός τυφώνας, ένα ζευγάρι χιμ��ατζήδες που θα χωριστούν με βάναυσο τρόπο, ένας μηχανικός, απογοητευμένος από την καριέρα του και καταπιεσμένος από τον πληθωρικό πεθερό του, και ο παλιός του καθηγητής, φόβος και τρόμος στα αμφιθέατρα και υπεύθυνος, κατά την άποψη του πάλαι ποτέ φοιτητή του, για κάθε κακοδαιμονία που στοιχειώνει έκτοτε τη ζωή του, θα συναντηθούν σε έναν τρελαμένο μεξικάνικο αυτοκινητόδρομο, προσπαθώντας να βρουν καταφύγιο απ' τον τυφώνα." γράφει η περίληψη στο οπισθόφυλλο της (εξαιρετικής) ελληνικής έκδοσης και δεν χρειάζεται να γνωρίζετε τίποτα παραπάνω για την ιστορία. Με λιτό και σχεδόν στεγνό και απρόσωπο στιλ, ο συγγραφέας περιγράφει κάποιες εξωφρενικές καταστάσεις α λα Κουέντιν Ταραντίνο, με αφόρητο ρεαλισμό και δίχως ίχνος συναισθηματισμού, οι πρωταγωνιστές φέρονται σαν μαριονέτες, σαν πιόνια του συγγραφέα, ο οποίος ίσως έτσι θέλει να αναδείξει την πορεία που μπορεί να πάρουν οι άνθρωποι σε περίεργες και ακραίες καταστάσεις. Ύπουλο βιβλίο, ίσως όχι κάτι το φοβερό και το τρομερό από λογοτεχνική άποψη, όμως διαβάζεται απνευστί και καθηλώνει... και είναι έτοιμο για να γίνει ταινία (δύσκολο το βλέπω, τόσα χρόνια μετά την έκδοσή του). Προτείνεται.

I still don’t recollect, even after finishing this book, where did I first hear about it. Often, that helps me put a context and a reference to the book, and is a guidepost as to how I can expect to feel by the time the book is done.

No such luck here.

The book was reasonably rewarding, and best of all, is quite short and a breezy read. It takes place over 2-odd days, and is more like a short story than a novel. There are some flashbacks that help you understand what may have happened and possibly explain what’s happening and why.

Mind you though, only possibly.

The author does a clever job of providing just enough material to sow the seeds of doubt in your mind. There are facts narrated but from one perspective only. He is not telling you a story, he is recounting someone’s memories. The obvious drawback is you never know for sure what happened, but that to me is the truly delightful part - you, the reader, are forced to see and accept what the characters think and how they interpret the past, and feel like a true bystander while they do what all they believe they must do.

It’s nice, and that’s what makes the story that much more effective and biting, in my opinion. He leaves a lot of stones unturned, and manages the approach well.

At times, it may have felt abrupt, but most of that I attribute to the fact that this is a Spanish language story, translated to English. Might be just a writing style.

In the end, it’s hits home and hits hard enough, and fast.

I didn't finish it. I could only get halfway through this book. I can't believe it has such a high rating.
The language is so clipped and terse. The author does not build up any character and the dialogue jumps around form subject to subject sometimes in the same sentence. He does not develop a character, any of them. I found it just unbelievable the idea that the professor denied him of the job he was about to start. He had no evidence whatsoever that the professor ruined his chances. He just assumed. Maybe that's the whole point of the novel but I found it too annoying for my taste.
Later he tries to describe Joannes firm and how he came to own the company. Out of nowhere he says his father gave him a loan of money he was saving for a yacht! Where did his father come from? No mention of him before, no introduction, nothing. This is typical of the style of this novel. Things just come along out of the blue.

Από την περιγραφή περίμενα κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό, και θα προτιμούσα να είχα διαβάσει αυτό.

Ξεκινάει δυνατά, με χαρακτήρες που νιώθεις ότι γνωρίζεις. Σε όλο το βιβλίο η πρόζα κυλάει γρήγορα και σε κάνει να θες να προχωρήσει. Παρόλα αυτά, η ιστορία αφήνει κενά (τελικά γιατί έβγαλαν τον καθηγητή και τη γυναίκα του από το λεωφορείο;; Τι ρόλο έπαιζε καν ο πεθερός του και η γυναίκα του εφόσον τελικά καμία σημασία δεν έχουν;) και σε πηγαίνει από τη μια κατάσταση στην εξωφρενική επόμενη χωρίς προειδοποίηση, λόγους που να βγάζουν νόημα, ή τελικά την οποιαδήποτε κάθαρση ή ικανοποίηση.

Πιο πολύ έμοιαζε με πρώτο ντραφτ που θα μπορούσε να έχει γίνει κάτι πολύ δυνατό, παρά με ολοκληρωμένη ιστορία που όντως έχει κάτι να πει και θέλει να καταλήξει κάπου.

No se como describir las novelas de Jon Bilbao. Tienen un argumento muy mundano, historias que podrían pasarnos a cualquiera, pero están contadas de una manera tan fluida que te enganchan. Tanto en esta novela como en la anterior que leí suya, devore el libro. Esos acontecimientos tan cotidianos te van enganchando y quieres saber más y más hasta que cuando te das cuenta lo acabaste.

En esta novela el final me ha gustado mucho, aunque no deja de ser surrealista como de un momento a otro se vuelven locas las cosas. No obstante, es un final que podía caber en la cabeza, con las páginas veías como Joanes iba desquiciándose hasta al final echar la culpa de su fracaso sobre el profesor.

Tengo muchas ganas de leer más novelas de este escritor, son lecturas que te entretienen mucho.

El único pero que le pongo a esta novela es la casualidad de que se encuentren profesor y alumno enfrentados de antiguo en unas circunstancias tan novelescas. Si dejamos esto de lado y suspendemos la incredulidad nos encontramos con la habitual maestría de Jon Bilbao en retratar a seres egoístas y crueles en situaciones al límite.

Lo cierto es que es un relato cuando menos extraño. A ratos, familiar/cotidiano; en otros momentos, casi tétrico.

Aun así, todo eso ocurre porque, con una prosa muy sencilla, Jon Bilbao consigue trasmitirte todas esas sensaciones a la perfección.

No es una historia al uso, pero, desde luego, consigue captar tu atención de principio a fin.

The cover image on Jon Bilbao’s STILL THE SAME MAN tells it all. It shows a man reflected in the eye of some kind of “monster.” Only after reading the book does one understand that this is a chimp’s eye view of man and the monster might not be the chimp. This image frames the key questions of Bilbao’s tense and engaging novel: Is man predator or prey? What are the limits of man’s control over nature?

Joanes had a bright future as an engineering student. He believes his career derailed because of disparaging comments made by one of his professors. In middle age, he sees himself as a failure. He is running a dying air conditioning company. Air conditioning is an interesting choice in light of his Bilbao’s theme about controlling nature.

The setting is Yucatan, Mexico. The novel commences in the civilized tourist enclave. But moves to the more rural and dangerous regions of the peninsula because of an impending hurricane. Bilbao foreshadows what is to come as well as his theme when Joanes kills a chimp on the road. Meanwhile, the tension and loss of control ratchets up as the hurricane bears down. A menacing Mexican, who wields a machete and has another chimp chained to his body appears. This creates an overwhelming foreboding mood.

Bilbao’s male characters are controlling while the women are docile and accommodating. Joanes’ father-in-law is an overweight and overbearing bully. His former professor is domineering, manipulative and contemptuous of Joanes. Although there are female characters in the book, their impact is minor. This story is about control and macho is paramount.

In spite of its successful use of foreshadowing, nuanced male characters and sense of danger, the plot has flaws that often break the mood. Its most notable shortcoming is a reliance on coincidences that seem contrived. Finding his former professor on an isolated Mexican road fleeing the hurricane is outlandish. This coincidence seems too farfetched to be reasonable. His abrasive personality and position as an international scholar argue in its favor though. The loss of the professor’s phone and Joanes’ low battery also seem like convenient devices. They create conflict between the two men, isolate the characters and place them at the mercy of events. Yet it seems like a weak plotting device. The rural hotel owner banishes the main characters to an isolated cabin with a soundproof room. The group decides to shelter there despite its state of decay. This seems to be an unusual decision most people would not make.

The novel’s horrific outcome make it clear that man may be the predator after all.

Un libro interesante, de los que se leen casi de una sentada pero te dejan cavilando sobre qué hay detrás de lo que se muestra. Le pongo un 'pero': no comulgo demasiado con el encadenamiento de eventos altamente improbables para hacer avanzar una trama. ¿Es algo asumido conscientemente por el autor para sugerir la sumisión de los acontecimientos a un 'hado' o destino previamente escrito? Es posible, en cualquier caso a mi me resulta artificioso.
En el lado positivo, mucho: el lenguaje literario simple y directo. Los personajes que van desplegando dimensiones según se nos muestran sus actos o, en el caso del protagonista, sus reflexiones y recuerdos (todo ello sin que el narrador se comprometa, es el lector el que debe decidir si se alinea con alguien). La trama medida para ir incrementando la sensación de ahogo. El clímax irracional y su coda inquietante.
En definitiva, me ha parecido recomendable y he disfrutado de la lectura.
