Take a breath. Taste the fruit. Let out the scream you’ve held in for so long.
When the death of her mother orphans Mari, it shatters her perfect life in Avren, the beautiful city on the hill. Branded an Undesirable, she’s banished to the unforgiving wilderness on the eve of her adulthood, forced into a life of servitude. It’s in this forested world that she discovers the monsters in the fairytales she heard as a child are all too real.
Facing unpredictable dangers, a group of orphaned strangers named the Kindred Few adopt Mari into their fold. She learns the art of survival from her new brother and enigmatic commander, Bastian Hale. As they train for battle, they await the two prophesied saviors who will save them from Avren’s iron grip.
But as ancient fae prophesies unfold, Mari learns a difficult truth. She is one of the two destined to lead the charge to liberate the wilderness.
I really enjoyed reading Heather Kindt's The Kindred Few. She creates such a beautiful contrasting world where you can either live in Avren where every bit of your life is controlled by a council of others or be thrust into the wilderness, where life is hard but you're free to do as you please. For Mari, our FMC, her entire life was planned out until her mother's untimely death before her 18th birthday. Becoming an undesirable herself, Mari soon learns that not everything is as it seems. She becomes one of The Kindred Few and finds herself a new family before learning of a prophecy that foretells her becoming one of two saviors. Honestly, I really enjoyed this novel and emerging myself in this world. I cannot wait for book 2 to come out!
I didn’t want to leave the world of the Kindred Few!! I’m still there with Mari, Bastian, Grayson, Evie and sweet Luke. They’ve become so special to me. Bastian is that book boyfriend we all wish was real. They all have a deep connection, friends and family, it’s so beautiful!
This book grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and dreaming about it. Kindt did such an AMAZING job of making this world so vivid that I felt like I was there, experiencing all the horrors and beauty. Her characters have such depth and complexity and their growth is so believable. I fell HARD for this group of kindred few.
Kindt is always so BRILLIANT at writing unique and intriguing stories. They’re not similar to anything you’ve read. And I’ve seen her writing grow to something special, something that takes me into her story to live there a while. She’s definitely on my list of favorite authors!!
If you enjoy Romantasy, A Dystopian Society, lots of creatures and some intense fighting scenes, then you will DEFINITELY LOVE THIS BOOK!! But for the love of all things written, I NEED BOOK TWO NOW!!!
We are launched into the thick of it right from the beginning. Mari’s mom has died, not leaving her with enough money to stay a citizen in the city of Avren. Thrust out with the “Undesirables” outside the city, a place she’s only heard horror stories about, she is unsure what to expect.
She finds so much more than she bargained for. Like something out of a fairytale, she’s confronted with vampires, werewolves, dragons and fae, among other creatures. Along with this, the beauty of the land and people take her breath away.
Grayson, an older, previously exiled citizen, is tasked by the city to guide her. He welcomes her into his found family, even if she isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms by the others but she doesn’t give up. She finds out they believe she is one half of the fae prophecy about bringing peace to the world.
Bastian is in charge of training her so she can physically survive the wilderness and be what they need in a proposed savior. However, she can’t deny that pull she feels towards him romantically, even if she is unsure.
Levi is the “found” brother she’s always wanted. He’s a shoulder to lean on and her best friend. Being half fae he also prepares her for her role as a savior.
Evie, gives her the cold shoulder at the beginning, but eventually falls into the sister role.
This is a dystopian world, with a rebel force, enemies, fantasy, magic and found family. Mari character development is great as she sheds her citizen skin. With the prophecy present, I also get modern day LOTR vibes. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and can’t wait for book 2!
We enter a world with two protected cities, a Seelie Court, an Unseelie Court, and the wilderness. The courts are run by the fae and are not safe for humans. The protected cities are run by opposing factions-one of perfection and purity and one of death and destruction. The wilderness is everything else-werewolves, vampires, mutants and humans trying to coexist. A young lady newly orphaned from the world of perfection and purity is thrust from her perfect life into the wilderness due to the rules in Avren. All she knows is what she has been indoctrinated with in the last 17 years and that her mother has the sickness which she believes comes from the dirty undesirables like the one who worked for her mother. We follow Maribel as she navigates her new life and becomes a recipient of the prejudices she used to dish out as a privileged "Citizen". Grayson is her guide in this new world and when tragedy hits the first night of her exile she tries to assimilate to this new reality and to reconcile the lies she has been fed for her whole life. There are two saviors in the prophecy foretold and she finds out she is one of them. She trains and finds her place and searches for the second half of the prophecy to reveal the second savior. Knowing the Kindred Few are her family now what will happen when the second savior is revealed? You will have to read the book to gain the remaining information and I highly recommend it! The world building is great and I can tell there is so much more to come! There is action, some spice, found family, mystery, and so much more!!
I’m not going to lie, the FMC character in this book annoyed the heck out of me. Mari is kicked out of her home and city when she is left orphaned. She takes up with a group of rebels in the wild. She has been brainwashed into thinking the people who live in the wilds are lesser than the ones who live in the city, but it still was hard to read and made me totally unsympathetic towards her character and plight. As a character, I don’t really feel like she grew throughout the book either.
The characters in the wild though, loved them! What a great bunch of ragtag characters, all with their own stories. The world building of the wilderness was great, and the storyline was good. The insta love between Mari and Bastian, while explained, just felt too forced to me, and totally non organic. Maybe this is due to my dislike of Mari. Who knows?
Overall, the book was good, and if you don’t have an instant dislike to the FMC, you’ll probably enjoy it a lot more than I did! This fantasy book contains magic, a bunch of mythical creatures, and rebellion.
I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In The Kindred Few by Heather Kindt, Mari, after the death of her mother, is banished to the wilderness, where she becomes a part of a group of rebels, named The Kindred Few.
The worldbuilding in this book is amazing, you could see it all-in your mind while reading the book, and the story-line and plot is fantastic and unique. As I love a plot with a prophecy, I had a hard time putting the book down. Maria is a great character as she has to come to terms with all that she was led to believe. The writing style is really flowing.
The Kindred Few is a well written dystopian fantasy story, with drama, action, found family, romance, some spice, magic, great worldbuilding, and it comes with a good plot, and likable characters. It is a book I enjoyed a lot and for those who love dystopia, this is a must read.
“If you love dystopian societies with displaced magical creatures sprinkled with snark and heated romance, then you'll love The Kindred Few.” Read this and I was super excited to read this and it did not disappoint! Set in an intriguing and fascinating world, our female mc Mari finds her life turned upside down with the death of her mother and cast out of the world that she knew. Mari then discovers that the wilderness is not all as it seems and instead of finding death, she finds so much more! A well written story that sucks you in with danger, magic, mystery, family, friendship, romance, magical creatures, prophecy and more then a few surprises and I have to say I cannot wait for book two!
DNF - quit at 15% The story showed promise, but I hated Mari, the FMC. She just rubbed me wrong, and made me lose interest in the story as a whole, since I really did not want to read about her. I put the book down & couldn’t bring myself to pick it back up. I’m sure other readers might appreciate this more than I did.
At my age (62), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.
The author of this book outdid herself on this one. I absolutely love the world she created and the characters in it. I could feel their emotions and their struggles in this world. I would highly recommend it to anyone. This is one of those books where I absolutely did not want to put it down once I started reading. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Thank you heather for bringing to life this wonderful book and its people.
I really loved this book! The twists and turns left me reeling but I'm heading for book two and I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens to the kindred few. I'm so involved in this story!
Mari lives in a society strictly controlled by the ruling council. Her every movement is watched and controlled, her whole future is determined for her. All of this is fine with her until the worst moment of her life causes the council to turn on her and sentence her to lose her status as a citizen and live in the wilderness. However, instead of the death sentence Mari assumes she's been dealt, she finds a future, love, a family, and also a new purpose.
I love The Kindred Few! This book had all my favorite tropes, dystopian society, rebels, enemies to lovers romance, found family, magic, and more. I adored the relationships she developed with her new family and the swoon worthy romance she had with Bastian. There was also mythical creatures galore. At first the book seemed more like a dystopian world book, but then before you know it there's vampires, werewolves, fae, dragons, and more! Then the end of the book broke my heart, but I'm sure it will just make Mari stronger. She's even more determined in her goals now. I was completely sucked into this world and didn't want it to end. I am very enthusiastically waiting for book 2 and I going with a strong 5 stars!
