About the author

Ajeet Cour (born 1934) is a Punjabi Indian writer. She has written novels and short stories in the Punjabi language on social-realist themes such as the experience of women in relationships and their position in society. She received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1985 and the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 2006.

Ajeet Cour was born in the family of S. Makhan Singh in 1934 in Lahore. She had her early education there. After the partition, her family came to Delhi, where she earned an M.A. (Economics).

"এখনো পর্যন্ত রাজ আমাকে একবারই স্পর্শ করেছিলেন। আর সেই স্পর্শের পরিণাম ছিল ডলি।
ডলিকে জন্ম দেওয়া সত্ত্বেও আমার শরীর এখনো আনকোরা ছিল। অস্পর্শিত ছিল। কামনার যন্ত্রণা কাকে বলে- আমার অভিজ্ঞতার বাইরে ছিল। যৌনতার ক্ষুধা কাকে বলে জানতাম না।
রাজের রাগ উত্তরোত্তর বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছিল। সামান্য ভুলে হাতুড়ীর মতো থাপ্পড় গালের ওপর পড়ত। চেহারা বাঁচাতে চাইলে কাঁধের উপর পড়ত। কাঁধ বাঁচাবার চেষ্টা করলে পিঠের উপর পড়ত।
ডলি তখন মাত্র দু' মাসের। একদিন রাত্রে উনি আমার বিছানায় এলেন। এবং হিমশীতল কণ্ঠে বললেন, "আমার একটা মেল চাইল্ড চাই।" আর দু মিনিটের মধ্যে নিজের বীজ আমার শরীরের মাটিতে রোপিত করে চলে গেলেন। যেন কোনো জরুরী কাজ সেরে নিলেন। আজ ভাবি যে, বারো বছরের বিবাহিত জীবনে আমার স্বামী আমায় মাত্র দুবার স্পর্শ করেছিলেন।
সব মিলিয়ে আমার বিবাহিত জীবন মাত্র চার মিনিটের ছিল।"


এই আত্মজৈবনিক লেখাটি এতো ভয়ংকর সব অভিজ্ঞতায় পূর্ণ যে একটানা পড়তে পারিনি।বারবার বন্ধ করে দিয়েছি। কোনো সাধারণ মানুষের পক্ষে এসব পরিস্থিতিতে বেঁচে থাকা সম্ভব ছিলো না। অজিত কৌর পেরেছেন, এজন্য তিনি অনন্য ও প্রণম্য।  জীবনের দুঃসহ সব অধ্যায়ের পরও যেভাবে তিনি মাথা তুলে দাঁড়িয়েছেন;যেভাবে সমাজের কাছে, অত্যাচারী স্বামীর কাছে বারবার পরাজিত হতে হতেও ফিনিক্স পাখির মতো ভস্ম থেকে জেগে উঠেছেন, তা পড়ে অনুপ্রাণিত হলাম খুব। কতোটা পথ পাড়ি দিতে হয়েছে, কতোটা পথ পাড়ি দিতে হচ্ছে উপমহাদেশের নারীদের!!

This is a true story of one of great writers in Punjabi. This is one in-your-face book about the status of women in our society - how they are always at the mercy of others. They have no control over their choices and destinies. As she says, for liberation from fear - she paid a huge price, almost too much to bear. This is one of the many stories of the women in our country, who are neglected at home and abused after marriage. I feel proud of what the author has achieved in her life despite the crap she went through. My humble homage to all such women and even men who overcome hardship against all odds.

The book is the second part of Ajeet Cour's autobiography and recounts her life since childhood. Her childhood as a girl was marred with innumerable restrictions and household work. Her married life was again not the peaceful one where she had to grapple with the constant nullification of her identity and self. However, the book proves her grit and resilience against all odds and her attempt to build up her own house with her daughters to live a life where patriarchal notions would not nudge them at every turn.
