“I am hopelessly in love with a memory. An echo from another time, another place.” — Michel FoucaultIn 1999, the Kahuna was The Man on Oahu’s west coast. The coolest guy at the wildest parties, with the coolest posse, the best weed and the most beautiful girlfriend.
Then he disappeared.
Fifteen years later, that girlfriend is no longer a high school senior. She is FBI Special Agent Vanessa Storm, and she sees through every lie the Kahuna spins when he shows up again to beg her help.
How can she say no when the Kahuna wants her help not for himself, but to protect his little sister. Young Christine Koraka is ready to set fire to the whole Oahu illegal drug trade—for revenge.

i am so happy that i was able to read this book. as someone who grew up on the Hawaiian Islands, i love the rich culture. the language and descriptions of the islands in this book took me home for a short time. this is one of those books that just when you figured out who done it your like oops the story takes a different turn, although this book complements The Lei Crime Series. you do not have to read them to be able to follow this story line. i really hope we get to see many more books from this writer
Vanessa Storm is back! An old boyfriend has returned to the island to help a family member in trouble with the law. He's asked Vanessa for help in clearing his brother's name but there is plenty more to the story than anyone realizes. If you've followed the Lei Crime Series you'll recognize Yamada, Lei's old partner from her stint in the FBI, and her old boss. The story is given in pieces as the events of one evening, almost two decades ago, is vitally important to current affairs. Everything boils down to what happened that one night and the effects of one decision. Bury likes to incorporate the names of fellow Kindle World authors and it's fun to see their involvement. It's not necessary to read Bury's other works in this KW but it gives a little history of Storm. This was another excellent novel and a perfect example of a Kindle World story, taking a secondary character in the primary series and developing another world for them. I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy through the author and have written my review voluntarily.
A great story. Vanessa Storm is back on Oahu where she grew up as a young girl, now a special agent with the FBI. Her old boyfriend, the big Kahuna, shows up after having disappeared for 15 years and asks for her help for his sister, Christine Koraka. It brings back vivid memories as she works her way through the mystery of why he disappeared and how it relates to his sister's case.
I think this is one of the best work from Scott Bury. I'm a great fan of his writing and also read his previous Lei crime series but this one is the best. You keep on guessing page after page, and it keeps you hooked all the time. Must read for all suspense crime fiction lovers .
Originally a KW edition (2017). Scott has updated and added to that one. This shows as one of 3 editions of the same book. So - here's my new updated review. I still love his Vanessa stories!
This 4th book in Bury’s ‘Hawaiian Storm’ series is kind of like a prequel. I take it as more of an explanation of Vanessa Storm’s character and zeal that drives her to go after the ‘bad guys’. We are taken back more than a decade where teen-ager Vanessa is in love with a handsome local bad boy, Dylan (AKA the Kahuna), who is involved in selling marijuana. One night, after a magical night with Vanessa, he just disappears. Gone. No word. The story picks up 15 years later; Vanessa is now with the FBI in Honolulu, when he stealthily reappears on the scene. Without going into details or spoilers, let’s just say the story gets terribly involved and interesting. Dylan’s mom and sister, dirty cops, Thai drug cartel, old high-school friends, a meddling wanna-be reporter... This is one you don’t want to miss!
