Dukes Most Wanted #2

Forever Her Marquess

Rate this book
From bestselling author Scarlett Scott comes a scorching-hot series that returns to the Notorious Ladies of London world. Six friends, one house party, and a whole lot of scandal...

Lady Clementine Hammond may be polite society’s most notorious matchmaker, but she’s perfectly happy remaining unattached herself. A series of unfortunate missteps at a country house party, however, leaves her with no choice but to feign an engagement to the last man in all England she’d ever want to marry—the annoyingly handsome Marquess of Dorset.

Dorset needs a wife with a sizeable dowry to save his estate, but thanks to Lady Clementine’s machinations, the woman he intended to wed became someone else’s wife. Much to his dismay, when fate inconveniently throws Lady Clementine into his arms, he’s forced to claim she’s his future bride.

The bitter enemies strike a reluctant understanding. One fortnight of false smiles and pretending to be head over heels for each other, followed by a return to London and the quiet ending of their betrothal. It should be quite simple.

Except, the more time Clementine and Dorset spend together, the more real their engagement feels. And when their mutual enmity heats into a surprising passion, Clementine is shocked to realize she wants far more from Dorset than two weeks. She wants his forever.

Heat level: Scorching! Don't say you weren't warned.
Length: novella

⭐⭐⭐💫
3½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting side characters.

Enemies to lovers.

OK plot.

Somewhat interesting main characters.

Country setting. (Not set in London.)

Some funny moments.

Good steam.

➖ What I disliked:

A little too much telling and not enough showing.

Some parts are a little too rushed even for a shorter story.

Both main characters needed a little more depth.

Repetitive.

The plot is somewhat OK but on the thin side and needed more depth.

The enemy part of the relationship lasted a little too long.

The romantic build up/romance was rushed.
(They go from hate to love in a rather rushed way.)

A little too formulaic in some places in the story.

A little too anachronistic in some places in the story.

The character description/visual appearance of the heroine is a little bit on the vague side.
(There is some information/ description about the heroine…..like eye color, hair color and some information about her body type/shape…. but it is sparse and somehow also a little bit contradictory… described as having “generous curves” but also in other descriptions there are hints at another body-type/body shape with words like slender etc. so it is confusing/ contradictory.)

Formulaic in the character description/visual appearance/character choice of the hero.
(So far in this series the heroes are rather similar in looks/ appearance …. Tall or very tall, muscular, handsome or very handsome… what little dissimilarity/differences there are is that they have different eye colors and hair colors not much more.)

This book has me in it's claws from the beginning. And it was an all nighter.

It has one of my all time favorite tropes and one that Scarlett Scott always succeeds with a enemies to lovers story.

This is Clementine and Ambrose's story

They despise one another..

She despises him because he is a rake of the first order and she wants nothing to do with any rake whatsoever.

He despises her because she's a matchmaker and she ruined his chance at happiness and at restoring his family's estate.

However a bee sting lands them in a unspeakable position where he announces that they are betrothed.. With the determination of ending the betrothal by the end of the house party.

However soon things change between them. They soon find that they can't stop thinking of each other, they can't stop looking for each other, they love to bicker just so they can talk. And they figure out that fate brought them together.

For those looking for a historical romance with humor, passion, joy, bees, Orange tabby cats and happily ever after along with so much more.. Look no further than this story.

Clementine and Ambrose will have you falling in with them immediately.

I received this story from the author as arc in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.

🥵

Some steamy moments in this beautifully written book by Scarlett.
Excellent characters and some good dialogue too.

Started off not liking our hero, but he grew on me quickly and the two of them together were dynamite. The bee 🐝 scene was brilliant.
This is a second chance romance, and was better for it, seeing the two finally happy together is so satisfying.
Very enjoyable read throughout.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

EDIT: As I read the first several chapters of this, I knew it seemed familiar, then remembered the Second Chance Manor series, The Matchmaker and the Marquess, also by this author but no longer available on Amazon (I didn't notice the last sentence at the bottom of the book blurb). This is a slightly expanded version of that novella, with around 30 pages added if you compare the details listed on Goodreads. It's difficult to compare content exactly since the novella came out a couple of years ago and I've read a lot of HR's since then. It doesn't seem like much at all plotwise was changed.

I swear I owned the 4th book in the Manor series, which was also by this author, but it no longer appears in my Kindle library. Don't know if that was a Kindle, Amazon, or author/publisher decision. I enjoyed that novella well enough that if the author wrote an expanded version, I might check it out on KU, but it's hard to want to basically re-buy a book you once owned.

The upcoming book in this series does sound like it's not a repackaging, so I probably will check it out.

if this was 2014 I would have read this book like it had the potential to cure my depression. Alas it's 2024 and I'm older and wiser (I hope). Anyway, this enemies to lovers trope is just that... a trope. There was nothing new, it wasn't even old wine in a new bottle for the author didn't even take effort to design a new bottle. It was a book centred around a trope, forgotting that you actually have to develop genuine characters to make it work. I probably will forget about this in a week.

This is my 68th book by Scarlett Scott. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. She is actually one of my top favorites. I have been reading her since 2016. I love her stories and her writing and she writes such damn good, yummy, hot sex scenes. I know I will always get a good read from her. I loved book 1 in this series. So freakin' hot. Can't wait to read this one.

I loved Clementine and Ambrose. I loved their stories and their personalities. Loved the I hate you, no I don’t back and forth. I am a little torn also because I felt something was missing. It wasn't them. I think it was not knowing very much about her or him. Many of these books I read (I read 300 a year) there is always a meddling mother or disinterested father or some parent. And unless I read to fast and just skipped over it, they never talked about her or his parent(s). I just thought it was different. Still a good read. Always love a Scarlett Scott book.

What is anger, if not passion? Hate, the other side of love. These two have always had blinding passion for each other, they are simply learning that hate & love are a two-sided coin, easily flipped.
Ambrose and Clementine are the perfect enemies to lovers bliss. From blinding irritation, to heated banter and longing looks. From the start you can easily see that their annoyance stems from some other ignored feelings. Watching them battle their way through the fake courtship only to be blinded by the realizations of their true feelings was highly entertaining. There is nothing I love more than bumbling love, that pure shock of clarity when they realize the truth. The sneaking around, the combative wordplay, it all adds up to a wonderfully exciting romance. I cannot wait to continue the enemies to lovers run with Lady Edith and her wicked rake!

This book had all my favorite tropes. Fake engagement, enemies to lovers, rogue needing a dowry, a strong, independent heroine, and a charming rake.
It was also quite steamy with a few very well- written scenes that flow along with the story without taking away from it.
All the characters were superbly written, especially Clementine and Ambrose, the Marquess of Dorset. Ambrose was quite the romantic hero. This book pulled me in from the very first page. Never a dull moment.
Scarlett Scott has a talent of making sure every character and book is a favorite.
It wouldn't have bothered me if this story was another hundred pages. It is fast paced and hard to put down. I am looking forward to Edith and Val's story as well as the rest of the series. I do hope these characters will make an appearance in future books.

Forever Her Marquess by Scarlett Scott is a steamy enemies to lovers, fake relationship romance. Clementine and Dorset have sparks flying right off the bat, and their story doesn’t disappoint.

Clementine had her heart broken by a rake in her past, and she resigned herself to matchmaking instead of finding her happily ever after. A bee finding its way under her skirt upended her plans when Dorset arrived after hearing her screams. What follows is an unputdownable read. Their verbal sparring is top notch!

Through the course of their story they reveal their vulnerabilities to each other and that leads to further softening of feelings. An adorable red cat plays an important role in their realization of their feelings. He’s a scene stealer. I strongly recommend reading Clementine and Dorset’s story.

I received an ARC from the author. The opinions expressed above are mine.

Absolutely Loved This Book!
Dukes Most Wanted (Book 2)
This is Clementine and Dorset’s story!
A beautiful and witty romance. Fast paced romance and so well written with great attention to details.
A second chance romance for the each of them.
She and her friends and eligible bachelors are attending a house party at Vivi the Duchess of Bradford house and Dorset is there.
But Clementine does not like him because he is a known rake and scoundrel, he did not like her for being a meddling matchmaker and setting his intended up with another. But, a funny situation with a bee puts them in a compromising situation and he saves her reputation by proposing to her.
Their attraction is undeniable and when they make love it is spicy and hot 🔥
I have to say that I just loved the part with the bee and Lord Dorset helping Clementine!
As the storyline progresses their fall in love and have their happily ever after ❤️

A fun, entertaining & steamy romance. I loved both Clementine & Ambrose who found themselves betrothed after an incident with a bee, they dislike each other until they don’t. Their witty banter is delicious as is the chemistry between them. The more time they spend together the more their feeling change & grow but will they admit to themselves how they feel or have they left it too late? Another brilliant book from the author, I loved it

I was laughing so much at Clementine. She always seemed to be getting into trouble. Firstly, she entered the wrong bedroom at the house party. This happened to be the Marquess of Dorset's bedroom - and she got caught! The next thing was that a bee happened to get under her skirts, and stung her (she was not wearing anything under her dress), although the Marquis did try to get the bee out. Oooo, absolutely loved it. Very sexy scenes and a lovely ending. 5☆

Enemies to Lovers! One of my favorite tropes! And when it involves a grumpy Marquess , stuck at a house party with the matchmaking spinster that ruined his life, well, we have the making of a most enjoyable read! I loved the sparing and delightful banter between Ambrose and Clementine. Their fake engagement grew into so much more , one sizzling kiss at a time! But neither one wanted to admit to the other that it was any thing more! Loved every wonderful page of it!

shallow storyline

Compared to other books in this series this one was a disappointment, there was no drama, no real reason for the about turn in the protagonist’s feelings towards each other. It felt very forced like the author was rushing towards the finish line

“You expect me to believe you innocently wandered into the wrong room?”
“Yes.”
“You? The lady notorious for all her matchmaking escapades, for catching couples in compromising positions, had no notion of which room she was entering?”
“Yes”
“Ha!” He barked out a vicious, bitter burst of laughter so sudden and loud it caused her to flinch. “You must think me the world’s greatest idiot.”
Her mouth moved, unable to form sentences for a moment. In truth, she did think him an idiot, but for a different reason entirely. “Perhaps not the world’s greatest,” she allowed, unable to hold her tongue.

Ha. I guess she told him. Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt...at least thats what THEY say. Y'all, I’m sitting here trying to figure out which book in Scarlett Scott’s Dukes Most Wanted series I like best …and I can’t really decide. What I can say without question is this….Forever Her Marquess is just as good, if not better than Forever Her Duke. There’s nothing like a good enemies-to-lovers tale and baebay…our two MCs can’t stand the sight of one another. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if one crossed paths with the other on fire and handed them a marshmallow. Ok…maybe not that extreme, but you get the idea. The back and forth banter between the two is sarcastic and witty and unpredictable and at times so snarky you can practically feel the heated words being flung around.

Now to be fair, Ambrose has a right to be upset with Clementine. I mean, she did pull a “Karen” and stick her nose where it didn’t belong. BUT…buuuuut, her intentions were good and it wasss done in the name of love.

Lady Clementine Hammond, known for her matchmaking skills suddenly finds herself tangled in a web of comically awkward missteps at a house party thrown by her best bud Vivi, the Duchess of Bradford. In a twist of fate, she ends up fake-engaged to the last man on earth she’d consider marrying – the annoyingly handsome Marquess of Dorset…the very man whose engagement she recently destroyed. Desperate for a wealthy bride to save his fledging estate, Ambrose finds himself in an unfortunate “entanglement” with Lady Clementine. In order to save both their reputations, the two reluctantly strike a deal: two weeks of fake adoration followed by a very public breakup. As the two navigate their pretend love, what starts as a farcical charade takes an unexpected turn as Clementine and Dorset find themselves caught in the web of genuine feelings.

Forever Her Marquess is fun and romantic and at times quite comical. If you haven’t picked this up yet…do so. You can’t go wrong with a rogue out for a bit of payback and a woman who knows what she’s about.

I haven’t read a book of Scarlett Scott that I haven’t loved and this one is no exception! It’s the second book in the series but it reads perfectly well as a standalone book. This book is the most perfect enemies to lovers, fake engagement story I have read. It had me laughing out load with the unfortunate mishaps of Lady Clementine and Ambrose, the Marquess of Dorset.

Both find themselves at a fortnight long house party, hosted by Clementine’s best friend.
Although Ambrose dislikes Clementine for matchmaking the woman he was hoping to marry (her dowry would help him pay off some of the debt left by his brother) to another, the attraction between them is electric when they are close to each other. They don’t understand what is happening between them. She knows he hates her and he knows she’s a scheming chit who involves herself in matchmaking antics that she has no business doing but when they are together, they have a connection that causes them confusion.

A very unfortunate situation involving a nasty bee sting and a chivalrous Ambrose leads them being caught in a compromising situation and Ambrose announcing their fake engagement to save their reputations. The sniping conversations between the newly engaged couple are such fun to read. Their words are not hateful or loving but somewhere in between, the fine line between love and hate is blurred between these two. Ambrose decides to keep the rouse of the engagement up until the end of the house party, making sure Clementine suffers until then as he knows he’s the last person she would want to be engaged to, although he is enjoying the time with her, even if it is just to vex her or kiss her. Then the rescue of a tiny kitten from the river changes everything.

I love that Clementine is curvier and fuller busted than most women of the time. She’s independent and fiery. Ambrose, however much he dislikes Clementine always tries to be a gentleman and help when he can, even if it gets him in trouble. The secondary characters in the story are delightful and really enhance the storyline. The personal growth of Clementine and Ambrose was lovely to see develop. There are steamy open door scenes that are so well written. The whole book was a such fun to read. I dare anyone to read it and not laugh (or at least crack a big smile) while reading this book. It deserves more stars but I can only leave five. 😞 There’s a lovely epilogue and a sneak peek at the next book, which looks like it will be as good as this one as the MFC is very intriguing.

I received a special copy of this book and I’m leaving this review voluntarily. All views and opinions are my own.

When I say there was nothing remarkable about this story, I mean it. In fact, after reading the first chapter, in which Clementine accidentally finds herself in Ambrose's bedchamber thinking it was her friends and wishing to play a prank on said friend, I was certain I had read it before. However, a quick search of my reviews showed that I had not (not even under its original title of The Matchmaker and the Marquess). Considering the opening few lines were about the fact that these two absolutely loathed one another (for their own reasons), I was surprised to see how quickly that dislike turned to kisses, and those kisses to lust. Even at the end of the story, I never saw anything about their relationship that made me think they had fallen love.

I think part of the problem with this novel is that they spend way too much of it going over the same tired lines without actually listening to each other until much later. Clementine loathes rakes because she allowed herself to be taken in by one a few years prior, while Ambrose resents the fact not only that Clementine inserts herself in other people's lives as a "matchmaker", but also interfered in his which meant that the woman he had hoped to marry ended up marrying another.

Eventually, we are told that they start to realize there is more to the other than they originally thought, although from what I saw every time they took one step forward, they took two or more back. However, they do manage to finally admit their so-called feelings for one another after a minor disagreement that could have been avoided entirely had they just been honest with one another, and decide that their sham of a betrothal should become real.

Fast-forward to the epilogue where we see our newly married couple happily settled. Again, nothing remarkable, but not a horrible read either. I like that these are quick stories that can be read within a day, and I am just curious enough about Miss Edith and the situation she found herself in that I will probably continue on with this series just to see how the other house guests make out and with whom they end up.

Forever Her Marquess is the second in Scarlett Scott’s Dukes Most Wanted series. Set amid a house party organised by Vivi, Duchess of Bradford [the lead in the first in series Forever Her Duke] in order to raise support for the Women’s Suffrage Society, book two follows Lady Clementine Hammond and Ambrose, the Marquess of Dorset.
Lady Clementine has a reputation for being society’s most notorious matchmaker by catching couples in compromising situations which force them to wed. She herself, is happy to remain unwed following a tragedy in her past. One of the couples that Lady Clementine ‘helped’ towards matrimony was Lady Anna Harcastle, the lady the Marquess of Dorset thought himself in love with, causing him to lose her to another. He harbours a healthy animosity towards Lady Clementine so finding himself at a house party with her is the last thing he wants.
When there is an incident with a bee, Ambrose goes to Clementine’s rescue but this results in having to offer marriage to preserve her reputation. Agreeing to keep up the pretence only for the duration of the house party Clementine and Ambrose are finding that the pretence is starting to feel all too real.
This is a charming story of opposites attracting and finding love in unexpected places. Readers of Scarlett’s earlier books will remember Lady Clementine and Dorset and it is lovely to see their unexpected happy ever after.
Clementine has been largely misunderstood in her motives and it is good to see Ambrose discover the real person behind the reputation. Both of them slowly grow closer over the course of the house party and each realise that they have a connection that cannot be denied. I was charmed by their love story. I loved Ambrose’s teasing of Clementine and the banter they shared as well as the passion they discovered. I love the concept of a house party and it was intriguing to meet the other ladies and try to guess what was going on with each of their love stories. It looks as though Lady Edith is next and I very much looking forward to her story.
I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This story was originally published as The Matchmaker and the Marquess as part of a multi author series but Scarlett has changed the setting and expanded on the original. I loved Ambrose and Clementine and definitely recommend to all.

Who has NOT wanted to have Dorset and Clementine’s story? Do not wait, put down your coffee, download this book immediately!
Can a matchmaker who was burned in a previous relationship find her happily ever after? Can a Marquess who was jilted, and feels that this matchmaker is the reason, actually find love? The tensions and sparks fly from the time they both discover that they are at the Duchess of Bradford’s house party. Dorset, like so many, are seeking a bride with a hefty dowry, with few other expectations. Clementine simply wants to aid in the happiness of others.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, however you look at it. An unfortunate (for Clementine) experience with a bee starts a series of events that are likely to change her life that that of the Marquess of Dorset.
Can two people who seemingly hate one another, and for very different reasons, see past the alleged hate and embrace the spark they have each time they come together? The incident ensured that Dorset should propose marriage to the “scheming chit” in order to save her reputation; however it is to be short lived. All it took was the almost drowning of an orange kitten for the two to actually see one another. Clementine and Ambrose may or may not be one another’s forever, but the sparks and antics fly in this book, and it will all keep you enthralled.

I was lucky enough to get an ARC and have enjoyed reading every word. These comments are my own honest review and whether you’re new to Scarlett Scott’s various books and series, or you’ve read everyone on like I have, I hope that you enjoy this one! And, if you can help it, don't let work get in the way...lol

I love Scarlett Scott’s writing so much and this book does NOT disappoint!! It’s got bees, kittens, well-developed characters, a page-turning plot, steeeam and heeeat for days 🔥🔥🔥 and a wonderful HEA!! ♥️♥️
I absolutely fell in love with Ambrose (definitely book boyfriend material) and his wit, charm and how he resists falling in love but when the man falls, he falls! He is looking for a wife with a large dowry to help him restore his coffers after his brother (the past marquess) spent it all before he died so he comes to the house party looking for anything a wife but not necessarily love.
Clementine (our heroine) is the matchmaker who does not want her own HEA because she has been hurt by a rake and to keep her bruised heart safe, she puts up all kinds of walls and borders around it.
Ambrose and Clementine start as enemies (I won’t explain why here) and through circumstances and bees stings and labyrinth walks and kittens caught in a river rushing downstream allow their walls to fall and find, unbeknownst to them, their match in each other.
Do yourself a HUUUGE favor and read this book and book 1 and when it releases book 3 (I’m sure it will be amazing)!! Brava Scarlett!! Brava!! 🌹🌹

I absolutely loved Clementine and Ambrose. Both were complex characters with lots of depth and emotion. Clementine who had been burned in the past uses matchmaking to ensure her own friends happiness when she believes she can't have any of her own. Ambrose is the Marquess of Kent who needs to find a wife to save his crumbling estate. He is intense and focused on what he needs and he absolutely does not like Clementine who he feels is a busy body with no care of anyone but herself. What a treat for him to discover her layers and that all isn't what it appears to be. There is angst, drama, extremely funny scenes (OMG the bee under her skirts), tender moments, as well as some action that keeps the story moving consistently. I absolutely loved how the two parried barbs at each other. This enemies to lovers story drew me in and I read this in one day. Brilliant! I received an ARC of this book but all of these options are my own. Scarlett Scott is one of my absolute favorite authors and I immediate drop all to read her newest publications.

So fun and engaging!

She's prickly but she's damaged and doesn't want to experience additional loss and sadness due to her erroneous decision to fall in love with a duplicitous rake. Isn't the Marquees of Dorset made from the same mold as the man who broke her heart? To protect herself she decided to dedicate herself to finding and matching couples who have what she didn't.

Ambrose Dorset, Marquees IS a rake and falling in love was never in his sights. Much easier to be in lust and protect his broken heart. Certainly a conundrum that Lady Clementine was the very one who led his betrothed (and heavily dowered) intended away to another, crashing all of his hopes of resurrecting his ancestral home, Tilton Court.

The attraction they feel, completely antithetical to what either of them expected, has them in an awkward 'pretend' betrothal in order to protect her reputation. A comedy of errors ensues, surprising most of the characters and we dear readers! A delightful romp with surprising characters. It will end before you'd hope, it's so fun and romantic.

This novella follows the fake engagement trope between Lady Clementine Hammond, a notorious matchmaker, and the Marquess of Dorset, a man in need of a wealthy bride. The two have a history of animosity, but when they are forced to pretend to be in love at a country house party, sparks fly, and feelings change. Can they overcome their past and find their happily ever after?

This book is a fast-paced and steamy read, with witty banter, sizzling chemistry, and a satisfying ending. The characters are well-developed and likable, and the plot is engaging and entertaining. Fans of historical romance will enjoy this delightful story, which can be read as a standalone or as part of the series. Forever Her Marquess is a perfect escape for those who love romance, humor, and heat. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
