Mateo Silva doesn’t believe in falling in love. Raised in foster homes, he’d finally built a family with friends, which he didn’t intend to lose. His only problem was Raya Hansen. She was a friend and employee—so he should know better than to end up in her bed.

Unable to resist, Mateo decides he can have the best of both worlds—keep it professional during the day and get the sheets dirty at night. They’ll be together whenever they can, with no commitment, no expectations out of bed, and no one can know. Raya, who has been in love with Mateo for over a decade, decides this is the only way she can have him.
However, Raya cannot hold her emotions at bay, especially as Mateo continues to see other women, and it starts to feel like this arrangement is one-sided. When it all becomes too much, Raya not only quits Mateo but also her job. Mateo is disappointed that Raya couldn’t compartmentalize their professional and personal relationships—but he doesn’t stop her from leaving.

As the days go by, Mateo finds that he misses Raya, not just in bed but out of it as well. He wants her back, but she’s decided she won’t settle for anything less than big LOVE.

Will Mateo get over his damaged childhood and learn to love, and will Raya forgive Mateo for not respecting her love?

Unsafe
Double standards
Disgusting

- He was with others and shoved them at her face while fucking her without a condom once a week
- she of course was not with anyone else
- he is a sexist asshole who got in the way of a possible sex night with om but ended up sleeping with other woman at the same night and again shoved it at her face
- he kissed, dated and was tender buying gifts like lingerie to the ow, she knew he kissing ow and she knew he took her and others to his home yet she accept him fucking her without a condom
- she is a patchetic woman, she has a childhood trauma and the authors uses it as a excuse to make her weak.
- no grovel, she is so pathetic she accepts him back without any fight. Even seeing him slow dancing with a woman knowing he fucked her one day after being with her and continue to be with her she still allowed him to fuck her raw hidden in the ball
- she was his dirty lile secret, he dated ow and had hot loving sex with while with her he had the dirty kink sex
- he treated her like a whore and hid her and she allowed it
- the same night he broke up with the ow who is sexy, beautiful and inteligent he happened to see the h at a bar and decided he wanted her back, after one month since she broke up with him because he was fucking other women. He broke up with the woman he had been fucking for four months (three of those 4 months he was also fucking the heroine). The heroine having fool spelled across her forehead immediately got back with him
- the ow was gorgeos, the sex was good and she gave excellent head but because the heroine was the typical "whore in bed, prude outside" and she was also head over heels for him and would allow him to spit in her face if he wanted it and treat her like a dog in public and still open her legs at night the author wants us to believe he loves her. He doesnt. He likes dirty sex and she is the first one he can have it. He even knew she had a trauma about sex and imo he took advantage of her vulnerable side but she is a grown up and let him. A fool and an asshole
- she sleeps in the same bed ge was fucking ow a month ago
- ohh and he also said when they are over this time around it would be okay, they would go their separate ways. The fool is thinking about what if he fell for her. She has zero sense of self preservation.

I felt like the author must hate someone named raya and decided to write a prathetic woman named after the real one

Std talk? He needs bleach
She needs a back bone and a new man and a bucket of self respect

The next book sounds amazing, the guy is dating someone new and seem completely happy with her while his heroine is sad and moping after asking him to choose her and him chosing the ow. The sex is good and she sleeps over, something he never let anyone else do before. I can only imagine him have great sex with the ow in between impregnating his h while she is of course only with him.

What a fucking waste of my time.

I struggled to get to the halfway mark, but I did because I wanted to rate this book. The heroine pissed me off so much. No way was she 32 years old acting like a fucking doormat the way she was. It was embarrassing.

I did laugh when she was talking to the girl at her new job (I’ve blocked most details out now for my own sanity) and telling her she would never allow anyone to speak to her with disrespect. But that’s exactly what the hero did. He belittled and constantly berated at her, treated her like shit at work, and treated her like a whore outside of it. He was fucking other women while fucking her unprotected (but they weren’t in a relationship so it wasn’t cheating - like that’s the only issue you have to worry about 🙄), had a public girlfriend because she (the heroine) didn’t have the right look…but she doesn’t allow anyone to disrespect her?? Sure 🙄🤣 She was such a doormat, I was embarrassed for her. And I can’t respect someone who doesn’t respect themselves.

As for the hero, his reasons behind why he was the way he was were pretty lame. And made no sense. It seemed more likely he didn’t want to commit to the heroine because he wanted to continue fucking other women. That’s it. Nothing more complicated than that. But it was odd that someone with her trauma, who equated sex with emotion, would even go there with him in the first place - knowing what he was like. And of course the heroine only has sex with him. She would NEVER hook up with anyone else even though he had no problems doing so 🙄

This was just stupid. And I can’t read stupid.

This author is definitely not for me.

Started off fairly strong and then lost some steam for me. I wanted to tension and obsessiveness to last a little longer. The middle to end flagged a bit.

Minus 100000 stars.
This is not bdsm. The man treats the heroine like shit after sex. He shows with ow and asks her to go to his house where he just had sex with ow. He had sex with ows for ten years while she was in love with him. He was just an azzhole for all the time. I hated this, he even didn’t make her go on in her job where she was very good because he didn’t want to make favors, what favors. He liked only the sex with her because she never said no to anything even the most disgusting things, he knew she was abused and raped as a child. This book is pure shit. Hated it, it is wrong on every level.

2 ⭐⭐ - Meh!
=============
Another shit show of disrespect! Asshole and dormat got the HEA after he rubbed several women in her face in front of his friends. Women he took to restaurants, parties and get-togethers with their mutual friends and he also fucked them more smoothly with princess treatment. Being that she was his dirty secret that he only met for kink sex once a week. And besides, he treated her like shit at work where he was her boss.
I almost gave up several times, but I persevered until the end. I think this author is not for me.

I just didn't put it on the cheaters shelf because he warned her that they wouldn't be exclusive and would have sex with others.

Yuck.
The hero isn't a bad boss, and he isn't a dominant...he's a mean asshole who relishes in humiliating the heroine in and out of bed.

He treats her like crap at work, won't give her the raise she deserves; won't promote her to VP because she didn't go to an Ivy League school. WTH? Last I checked your position and salary was based on job performance not where you went to school or connections.

Should have read the reviews.

3.5 stars as I'm not used to this darkness from this author. It was heavy on drama and in some scenes my heart ached for both of them. It made me sad and disgusted with the vileness of some people if you can call them that

Wonder what this author’s target audience is 🤔Hopefully not ones with “impressionable young minds”🙁Even a jaded reader like me finds this trope unpalatable. WOW, this h’s standards are on the GROUND. The male mc (cos he’s not her hero, is he🤔) doesn’t promise her shit, but she still shuts up and rolls over, so🤷‍♀️…
Impressionable Young Minds, just because a guy has mommy and daddy and 62530982346 other issues doesn’t mean he has the right to judge you and find you lacking simply because you’re not what society deems “suitable”.
Now, if you’re looking for a truly fucked up hero, go find Mateo Morelli and see how he treats you DESPITE his 62530982346 issues rather than BECAUSE of them.
I mean, if our Hs need to be anti, they must, at the very least, be utterly devoted to our heroines, right?
Of course I’m right.

Can’t believe this book was published in 2023.

I’m not a fan of doormat heroines with limited brain cells.

He sleeping with other women, she is only ever with him (of course 🙄) but continues to let him not use condoms with her?? I wish she had more common sense than that.

I’m going to be completely honest, I was really unsure about this book after reading the reviews but I thought well if it’s a shit show add it to the DNF pile.
You see, I wonder just how many of those low ratings reviews actually read this book? I know that everything is open to one’s interpretation and that’s why most of us read right? Well if your still reading this sorry I’ll get to my point.
In no way shape or form did I think that Raya was a door mat. Raya was a strong but broken h who had been in love with a man for 10 years. She was fierce but unsure of herself. She had a brutal upbringing that I’m sure no one would say given that she was a door mat.
As for Matteo, he too had a past that made him the way he was. Together they developed and grew and for me it was a good solid believable story. If you didn’t mind a bit of betrayal which considering she knew the score and a solid story and HEA I recommend this 100%.
I’d actually like to know if you pick it up your thoughts because maybe I’m going soft 🤷🏼‍♀️

Let me preface these complaints by saying Alden is my favorite romance author currently. Her books are getting better and better. This book is VERY MUCH worth a read as this author’s storytelling is so talented.

Spoiler alert 🚨

Initially loved it. Mat had a personality transplant, but I still enjoyed it. There was some depressing off-page subject matter. Check the TW’s. Overall would recommend if you want drama llama. 🦙

Cheating = gray area really and up to interpretation as to whether it could be considered cheating...H and h are in FWB situation where the H is the one sleeping around with others. As to why it could be cheating, H sleeps around to distance himself from the h who he is in love with. It is painful for the h seeing the H give to others what he refuses her. h has a very poor self image and what the H does by sleeping around just perpetuated the h's insecurities and reaffirm to the h she is not good enough, not pretty enough, not feminine enough, just not enough period. h did not see the H's actions as cheating, but as the reader you get inside the H's head and see his intentions where even the H knew he was wrong to do what he did.

h sees H with OW = H makes h come to his apartment where OW is lounging around while the H and OW are preparing for a romantic getaway. H is affectionate with the OW and there was no reason to force the h to see the H and OW in his home other than to shove in h's face that he was with OW. In public, H also pays time and attention to OW wile ignoring the h. It was hard for the h to have this all shoved in her face.

SA/R = TRIGGER WARNING....h was the victim of child SA/R and was trafficked by her own mother. h also had videos made of her SA/R which was spread around and used as blackmail material by h's mother. Horrific abuse. h never wanted anyone to know and the knowledge of this abuse was used to located h's mother, bring mom in to blackmail the h and force the h to run. See OW drama for more.

OW drama = while there were several who might be considered OW, the true OW who caused the most intense and unforgiveable drama was the OW who was h's direct supervisor at work. h had stopped and fixed some malware the OW had installed and the company was being investigated by the feds because of it. OW sought out and brought in the h's mom to rattle/punish/force out the h. OW's reason for all this? She was jealous and thought the h was hooking up with the big boss (no the h was not and big boss was not the H either) Comeuppance? OW is found responsible by the feds and was imprisoned. OW drama caused by mom of h, comeuppance? Mom was imprisoned and h was able to confront her mother in prison to finally show her power and show her mom that mom no longer has power over the h.

Grovel = H has to make up to the h for his disregard of her and her feelings. He works to remedy his treatment of her by changing his actions and by consistently telling the h her worth. H also worked to right the h's past wrongs like going after the h's mom and getting her put in prison. H had personal growth and change. It was a satisfying grovel.

Some heavy subject matter

When we first meet Raya and Mateo, they are both deeply affected by their pasts. He is living life up in denial. It takes him a long time to leave his cosy little nest that he made there, but he finally gets his act together and admits the truth. Raya, on the other hand, is more honest with herself about her feelings, but hides a dark, festering secret. There is so much healing for both to do before they can stop hurting each other and start a life together.

This book deals with some extremely serious subject matter. The trigger warnings are crucial here. The book weaves the issues in with the characters’ pasts, linking them to the bigger themes of shame and self-worth. It’s a great story overall, with mild typographical errors only marring the effect slightly.

61% and i just could care less if they get their HEA or not. Endless games and push-pull. Mega doormat h and then when H finally wants her she starts this games of pulling away or i dont know what.
Same push-pull from like 30%

And this H.. he knows h loves him for years, says we are not exclusive, but KNOWS she is celibate and would never have sex with another. And he has lots of sex ...with other woman. In h-s face.
Just yuk.

Meh!

Like the author never wanted to give her fmc a break.
True for most of her other hs as well - but this is too dark and depressing.
And then to add bdsm on top of it all.
Have to confess, I am not a fan of bdsm/role-play.
And don't pretend to understand the psychology of it and so here, it only made me uneasy and 🤢.
Although this might really be a ymmv thing.

And then the mmc - who treats her like shyte for a decade personally and professionally, starts using her as a convenient and secret booty-call, while parading his suitable 'classy' almost-fiancee in her face - is not what I want in a H.

The fmc could not act more pathetic or door-mat-y if she tried. Because she already was on a 💯 there.
He just had to say jump, and she'd get on a trampoline.
And just when he pulls his head out of his backyard and gives her the ILY, she suddenly remembers she has past trauma that she has to deal with.
So, umm let's push the hea to a later date.

Could not relate with either mc or their story or path to a sketchy hea.

This review contains spoilers…

She had an abusive childhood where her mom pimped her out. She grew up to be a successful woman but struggled with being loved.

He was cruel and flaunted his other women in front of her. He decided her childhood was reason enough that she wasn’t “worthy” of a relationship with him; just good enough for sex. He changed his mind eventually but I found it difficult to believe just how fast he went from “I’m embarrassed by you” to “you’re the love of my life”. In my opinion, he never truly redeemed himself and she deserved better.

On to book number 2. We met these two characters in the first book, and found out that Mateo and Raya are in a relationship. However Mateo keeps everything compartmentalize and sees Raya as his employee at work and his friends with benefits outside. This is to much for Raya who has loved him for over 10 years. When Raya forces the issue and makes the sacrifice to leave the company and man she loves, Mateo, will have to decide what is more important.

I highly enjoyed this book.

DNFed at 30%.

Strong gut-punches at the start got my hopes up for a good long grovelfest. But no, the MMC is trash personified and the FMC has zero self-respect or dignity. I cheered and got the popcorn ready when she quit, but like a couple of chapters later he BBSes her into taking him back, not because he's realized he's in love with her or anything, but because he wants her for now. UGGGGHHHH.

Could not like or connect to either main character.

DNF around 50%

The story was quite boring. The h is described as masculine, 5ft10 tall with short blond hair. She works as head of security for some IT company and the H is her boss, Mexican dude apparently, although I was thinking Brazilian with his name...
Story starts with them doing it, and he treats her as shit.
She was in love so when he asks her to become his Fk buddy she jumped at this chance to finally have him 🙄
Anyways, after he flaunts his latest lady to her, she finally snaps and decides to leave him and the job, and now he misses her so much. I think it was around 10% so I was wondering what would happen to fill the story...

SEX is what happens next!
After she dumps him because she wants a relationship and not being his sex toy, he wants her back and she takes him with no groveling and they have non-stop SEX 🫥

I had to skim through all those ridiculous scenes until I got bored and decided to give up.
Don't know if the angst happened in the 2nd half or if the story got better, but the 1st half was quite lame...

This book is so bad it's laughable, and to prove my point I'll just let this quote speak for itself:

"You didn't even make him grovel," Daisy complained... and to that the fmc Raya replies: "Tell me about it. He said come, and I came."

Honorable option for another quote:

"Had he lost respect for me? Why shouldn't he? I let him treat me like a whore, and he did."

He treats her so badly that it can't even be described or explained in words that do it justice without this review becoming a novel in itself, but i will mention this one thing because it made me so uncomfortable when reading the book: Mateo basically enters into a BDSM relationship with elements of degradation with Raya, knowing that she was sexually abused as a child... and it isn't until over half way through the book that he stops to think if the way he treats her could be a trigger for her...

Later in the book it's mentioned that he thought/hoped she was abused as an adult, but the first time he thinks about it, it says that he had figured out that it was when she was still a child that she was abused - "She hadn’t told me, but I knew she had been sexually abused as a child." (this is from chapter 8) and then this: "I knew she’d been sexually assaulted; I could feel it, but I’d thought, hoped, that it had happened when she was a grown up." (this is from chapter 16)... Then again, just like with book 1 in the series, there are inconsistencies throughout the book that give the impression that the author doesn't even know what the fuck she's even writing)

But yeah, if a man that's so self-centered that he doesn't give your childhood trauma a second thought and is willing to enter into a BDSM relationship with you without considering how it could possibly be a trigger for you until months and months later, then Mateo is the man for you.

DNF - 31%

This book is an offence to BDSM community.
No after care, taking advantage of your partner, discuss your intimate life with other people, no safe words.

I generally know what to expect of Maya’s book and I’m mostly okay with it. Most of the times, despite the not-redeemable MMCs, the FMCs have SOME personality. They forgive easily ? Sure thing. They get used and cheated? We do know that. But this book?
Raya had 0 backbone and was super annoying.

The only difference with the rest of Maya’s books is that she is not the super pretty feminine woman everyone wants, which at first I found cool. Then we get to know her personality and the Head of Security, muscled woman who had a terrible childhood seems to be a doormat that accepts the humiliation of the MMC, forgives him whenever he says sorry for being a terrible human being & they move on with their life.

They have a BDSM dynamic and of course miss Maya didn’t bother to do her research about this type of things and she thought that being a sub in bed means that you’re just a powerless person that you’d let your Dom treat you like you’re bellow everyone and destroy your daily life.

Like, this guy humiliated at work, he was speaking to her terribly, he didn’t promote the woman while she deserved to be promoted… and all these while publicly he was dating another woman in front of the FMC. And what does she do? He says sorry and let’s date cause I missed you and she just goes with it.
LOL LOL LOL.
Not having self-respect ain’t sexy, love. After that, I stopped feeling bad for the FMC, cause girl, you deserve whatever does to you.

This book is problematic in many ways & I think it’s time for me to stop reading this author’s books.

Sometimes Maya writes an mmc that is sympathetic. Sometimes she writes a raging asshole and expects us to be like Raya and get on our knees in excitement. The bdsm part was bad, not a single redeeming quality about Mateo. Raya was unfortunately a doormat.
