Into the Bargain: A Clandestine Magic Fairy Tale

Rate this book
A young lady with no income—and shortly no home—must be in want of a wizard
husband.

Pen Novak has two weeks to find someone to marry. Otherwise, she’ll be spirited off to live with her awful uncle. Fortunately, her town’s omnimancer is on the market, and he plans to choose someone at a ball in thirteen days.

Unfortunately, he’s not the type to appreciate cleverness, persistence or anything else Pen has to offer.

Enter the wizard’s intriguing assistant, who makes her a bargain: a magical brew that could virtually guarantee her selection, in exchange for a favor. Which he won’t specify. Nor will he tell her his name.

Of course she shouldn’t accept. Especially as she starts to notice his fine eyes and tempting lips.

But with all the job openings in town meant for men only, what other choice does a young lady—or, rather, a not quite so young lady—really have?

The Clandestine Magic world was one I thoroughly enjoyed when I read and then later, listened to the trilogy. I loved discovering Into the Bargain is set in that world and gives a strong nod to several fairy tales as the story spins out.

Into the Bargain has a Gaslamp fantasy tone that is set in an alternate twenty-first century when women are less than second class citizens and magic users are the apex strata of the world. I appreciated that the novella developed this background and setting while launching into a story that captivates interest from the opening page with a woman feeling a strong sense of urgency when meeting the omnimancer’s assistant who is mysterious and more than he seems.

For those familiar with the Clandestine world, there is a crossover moment when familiar characters are recognized in one scene, but those new to Colleen Cowley’s writing will have no trouble slipping into Pen’s story. Her choices are not easy and she is doing the best she can. I was rooting for her all the way. In the end, I was glad to get a chance to revisit the series world and meet a new strong underdog heroine and her subtle romance tale.

I rec’d an eARC from the author to read in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this, but wish it had a more satisfying ending. I really love this author’s clandestine magic series - so if you haven’t read that yet, you’re missing out. This novella is set in the same clandestine magic world.

The story begins when the heroine, whose father has recently passed, decides that her last chance at escaping a life as her uncle’s drudge is to marry. She finds out that the town’s omnimancer is seeking a wife and plans to choose one at the next village ball, in two weeks time. In an effort to be noticed by this man, she visits his workplace, where she meets his assistant and strikes up a bargain to get his help to marry his boss, the omnimancer. Unsurprisingly, her feelings for the assistant start to grow as they start to spend time together. But the assistant won’t tell her his name, and she feels compelled to figure it out.

This is a short and sweet little story, and has mentions and references to many different fairy tales. The author has made this novella into a game where the reader tries to find references to various fairy tales and can submit the findings on her website to receive an e-prize, and to be entered into a drawing for a physical prize. Unfortunately, I’m not the most versed in fairy tales, so I’m sure many of the more subtle references were lost on me.

I received a free arc copy of this novella.

Safe
Virgin heroine
No info on hero
No ow drama
Mild om drama with the heroine’s plan to marry the omnimancer.
No scenes with om/ow
No cheating
The “spice” in this book is very mild… mostly fade to black.

This is a lovely little book that combines both romance and fantasy. I enjoyed it and wished it was a little longer because I became engrossed in it.

The strength of the book was in its characterizations. The author uses characters in such a way that they are clear and understandable. Thus, it allows the reader to sync into the plot with characters that have become familiar.

Good story overall and I hope to see other stories by this author.

I recommend this story.

Pen has no income, soon will have no home, and her only hope is to marry someone—soon. The local wizard has openly shared his intentions to marry, but Pen isn’t sure she will be the lady to catch his eye. Luckily, his assistant is willing to strike a bargain—a magical brew to ensure she is chosen in exchange for a favor in the future. But the more time Pen spends with this unnamed assistant the more she can’t stop thinking about him…

This fantasy romance novella is a Rumpelstiltskin twist set in the world of Clandestine Magic, an engaging series with alternate feminist history.

The chemistry and affection between the assistant and Pen was great. I read this straight through, enjoying the tension and chafing at the unfairness of this society—and how it sadly echoes our own world history and even the current state in many places.

Last year, I read and enjoyed the short story version of Pen’s romance in the collection Once Upon a Forbidden Desire, and this expanded novella developed the characters and world more, with some cameos from the characters in the Clandestine Magic trilogy.

ARC provided by the author. Opinions are my own.

I first read this as a short story in the Once Upon A Forbidden Desire anthology, and it was one of my favorite stories in the collection! So when the author reached out to let me know she was expanding upon the story to make it a full-fledged novella, I was so excited to revisit this world again. Heavily influenced by the Rumpelstiltskin fairy tale, it also contains easter eggs from a variety of other fairy tales as well. Since this was my second reading, I was able to pay a bit more attention to those and found myself giddy every time I identified a new fairy tale mention. If you're looking for a short and sweet romance with mild spice and a slow-ish burn, this is definitely one I'd recommend you give a spin.

Our heroine has two weeks to marry or else she will be forced to live with her uncle who she despises. At the age of 25, prospects are dim, but after hearing the town's omnimancer is looking for a wife, she decides he is her last shot at freedom. Unfortunately, he is not around to hear her plea, but his assistant keeps her company while she waits. And it's then that they strike a bargain - he will provide her with a potion to make her irresistible for an undetermined favor of his choice. In close proximity they work, and soon their affections are clear. But our heroine doesn't know his name...and when she learns it, well...all bargains are made to be altered.

This couple captured my heart the first time I read their story, particularly with the mystery of the assistant's identity and our heroine, Penelope's, desperation to get married. She never dreamed that anyone but the omnimancer would be willing to have her, but spending time in the assistant's company meant her heart no longer aligned with the reality of her situation. When the truth comes out about the assistant's identity, the story takes an exciting turn into a revenge plot, and I loved seeing another side to Penelope's personality. She had no problem taking charge, showing her strength as a woman, and defying the expectations set upon her by a old-fashioned society.

Looking forward to reading more books in this world! Thank you for the author for a free copy, and this my honest review.

“Into the Bargain” is a short novella set in Colleen Cowley’s Clandestine Magic world, and I thought it was a wonderful story!

Following the death of her father, Miss Penelope Novak decides to try to win the hand of her town’s omninancer, who is looking for a bride, as a final desperate attempt to find a way out of moving into her horrid uncle’s house.

What she didn’t expect was to spend so much time with the omnimancer’s assistant - a man who won’t tell her his name. However, the more time Pen spends with him, the more intrigued she becomes.

I actually really loved this story. Pen was a charming, intelligent heroine that I enjoyed reading about. Her love interest was also an interesting character that I wanted to know more about.

While this novella was definitely an original story, I did love all the references to many different fairy tales! This was absolutely a 5 star read for me!

A delightful novella, somewhere between a Fairy tale & a Regency love story.

I loved this story, based in 21st Century USA, where women were classed as secondary to men.

The heroine, Pen, is being cast out of her childhood home, and has no option but to live with her Aunt & Uncle, but she hears that an influential Wizard is looking for a wife, and puts herself forward, despite never having met him, and knowing very little about him.

This story is well written, and I was captured by the tale from beginning to end, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

A charming fantasy romance novella with a fresh spin on Rumpelstiltskin. This story stands perfectly well alone but also works as an introduction to the Clandestine Magic world. A warning if you do pick up the main trilogy after sampling this - be prepared to binge all of them in one go, they're that addictive!

What a charming story! I was so pleased to be able to return to the Clandestine world again. I was instantly drawn to Pen and the mysterious Omnimancer’s Assistant while simultaneously disliking the Omnimancer.

I thought it was quite a unique idea to complete a quest to find the fairytale references in the book. This added extra enjoyment to my reading, with me excitedly highlighting all the references I could find. So fun!

Pen tries hard to follow the rules in the A Lady’s Guide to Unimpeachable Conduct before finally agreeing to a bargain with the handsome assistant. Her intelligence, curiosity and tendency to take action makes for an interesting heroine who we can’t help but cheer for. As for the Assistant, he has a natural charm about him and an engaging manner, and it seems he is truly trying to help Pen. But what really is his underlying motive in striking a bargain with Pen? What favour will he require Pen to grant? How many rules in the Lady’s Guide will Pen break to achieve her goals?

This book delves into the theme of equal rights, like the other Clandestine books. It’s not heavy-handed or boring at all. The author skillfully weaves her message throughout the plot so you absorb it and cheer on Pen without becoming bogged down by a lecture.

Note there’s steam in this book with several well written scenes of sexual tension and intimacy. Since this is a short story this happens very early on in the story so there isn’t a lot of time for a slow burn relationship. I thought the author handled the ramp up to intimacy really well.

It was so fun to see cameo appearances from some of our favourite Clandestine characters.

You do not have to have read the other books in the series. This story could be read at any point in the series IMO. But frankly I’d recommend that you read the entire Clandestine series, the books are all excellently written and make for compelling read. I hope the author will continue to write many more stories in this world.

Thank you so much for Colleen Cowley for my gifted eARC of 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐀𝐈𝐍!

This was such a cozy fantasy romance novella that gave me all the Bridgerton vibes! There is also a really fun little side quest you can partake in while reading, and you have to try to pin down all the fairytale references! I didn’t do this on my first time reading, but am definitely planning on going back to find them all! I thought this was so much fun and made the reading experience more interactive!

This was my first read by Colleen Cowley, and I’ll definitely be adding the Clandestine Magic series to my TBR after finishing this prequel novella because I need more!

Pen was such a charming FMC - I loved reading about her! She was so inspiring and I definitely enjoyed seeing her standup against the Magical Patriarchy. The world-building was one of the most interesting parts of this story - it was set in the 21st century but it was still a gas lamp fantasy. Women had no rights, and this story describes a really beautiful and inspiring feminist awakening. Even for being a novella, I thought the story was paced perfectly and it didn’t ever feel like it was too fast or too rushed.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Pen and the Assistant - I loved the mystery behind him and the slow burn romance turned steamy that brewed between them!

Overall, I really enjoyed this read! This was the perfect novel and was quick, fun, and cozy & gave me so many good vibes!

Having been given two weeks by her uncle, Pen needs a husband or she’ll have to move to Wyoming and act as servant for her uncle’s family. She’s heard rumor that the local omnimancer is looking for a wife. Although at 25, she’s past prime marrying age, she’s hoping she can convince him with the help of his secretive assistant.

Into the Bargain is set in the wonderfully original and entertaining Clandestine Magic world. While it’s not necessary for enjoying this novella, I highly recommend checking out Ms. Cowley’s original trilogy which details the alternate timeline world filled with wizards and magic.

Cowley has created a delightful romantic adaptation of Rumpelstiltskin, but she didn’t stop with just one fairytale: there are both overt and subtle mentions of several familiar stories. The effect gives the entire tale a storybook vibe. But don’t worry, it’s not a child’s story!

While a romance at heart, Into the Bargain is Pen’s coming-of-age story. Even though she’s 25, she was sheltered and held back by her recently deceased father. She gave up much to take care of him and their home, never getting a college education or a job. In the two weeks she’s on her own and spending time with the omnimancer’s nameless assistant, she experiences so much, allowing her to grow and challenge the teachings of Lady’s Guide to Unimpeachable Conduct. A run in with a League rally (huge part of the original series) is highly transformative; “All this time, she’d thought the alternative to being a lady was an unspeakable fate—instead of the reality, which was to be a woman.”

As the pair spend time together while she waits for the omnimancer, and mutual friendship and attraction grows, putting into question Pen’s whole plan.

Into the Bargain is an entertaining, sweet novella with ties to several fairytales. I am so thankful that Cowley continues to revisit and expand her Clandestine Magic world.

What a fun little novella! Rumplestiltskin vibes, but with wizards and a strong-willed FMC who no longer wants to abide by the proper ladies' handbook. I wish there was more to this cause I'd love to see where Pen and the assistant end up!

Folx, I have been so excited for this release for a while. I first read this short story in the Once Upon a Forbidden Desire anthology, and fell in love at first read. When I learned it was going to be re-released, I was ecstatic. The day is finally here; and I will now happily wax poetic about Colleen Cowley’s, Into the Bargain (A Clandestine Magic fairy tale).

A Little Bit of Plot
Pen Novak has exactly two weeks to either find employment or get married; otherwise her insufferable uncle will remove her from her family home. Word on the street is the local Omnimancer is in want of a wife and Pen is determined to be the one to fill that position. Why is it then that when she should be devising opportunities to woo the magician, do her thoughts stray so often to his unnamed assistant? When the omnimancer’s assistant offers her a bargain she can’t refuse, what will be asked of her in the process?

The Compliment Sandwich
The Top Bun (The Pro)
The Worldbuilding

What I absolutely adore about Colleen Cowley’s Clandestine Magic world is the timelessness in which it takes place. At times, I feel as though I’m living in the late 1800’s and the next, the 1940’s. That allows for the freedom to let your imagination conjure an amalgam of styles and technology - where trolley cars exist but not modern medicine. It’s almost as if half of the world progressed forward and the other did not. Mostly, the men advanced in every aspect of the modern world, when the women were prohibited. Until now.

If you're familiar with the Clandestine Magic world, you'll understand that this is a story of just one of the many women who have begun to rise up. What I love about this book is that you have to consider the entire landscape of the world in order to grasp how Pen’s small act of dissent has enough firepower to light a few hundred fuses.

The whole gaslamp fantasy genre provides an opportunity to rewrite our history as a modern day fable detailing how everyday acts of rebellion can turn the tide. In Cowley’s world, she plays upon the moral quandary of what happens when men are given unchecked authority, when, in fact, women ultimately hold the raw talent and power.

By not immediately caving to the expectations of her uncle, Pen has defied what is to be considered a lady in this world. Oftentimes, her inner monologue attempts to divert rebellious thoughts by quoting from A Lady’s Guide to Unimpeachable Conduct.
Well - that distinguishing oneself as an individual was the very last thing a lady should do. Those exact words weren’t in the Lady’s Guide, granted. The message lurked between the lines. ‘A lady defers to the preferences of others. A Lady does not make a spectacle of herself. A Lady can never go wrong holding her tongue; much better to be seen than heard’.

Present day, these are the same guidelines we give to children to keep them obedient. So in other words, the men in Cowley’s world consider women to be intellectually and behaviorally on the same level as children.

Who’s angry enough to go get a job in a career that has historically only employed men? Let’s do this!

The Meat (The Con)

I would have liked an epilogue for Pen and her partner, or a little a glimpse into their future. It’s okay that we don’t, as we have a whole trilogy detailing the rebellion at large.

The Bottom Bun (The Pro)
Subtle is Sexy

This book is steamy without the explicitness. As we are in an Edwardian culture set in present day, deviating from social constraints is very sexy. We find sensuality in the curve of the set of lips, a gimlet colored gaze, and the possibility of temptation.
Her nameless companion leaned even closer, his next words in the timbre of a scandalous proposal:
“They’re at the city park. We could sit across the lake and listen.”
Oh. Temptation shivered down her spine.
“Do you want to, Miss Novak?” He’d stopped walking. His gaze pierced her.
Want - such a dangerous word.

The assistant is offering Pen choice and opportunity, so often denied to females at this time. He’s giving her the ability to act out her own wants, therefore, not live according to those of others. The fact that this is being offered by a man is even more scandalous.

I think most will cite the “hand flex heard round the world” when describing 2005’s Pride and Prejudice, and why is that? The mere hint of sensuality or being overcome with emotion was unheard of in the Edwardian era. The same can be said for the world of this book.
When we are privy to more of the ‘sexy times’, everything is hinted at, not fully shown. Does that lessen the impact these scenes have in relation to the overall steaminess of the book? Hell no. They often lead to moments of clarity for our main character, building her confidence. And as we all know, confidence is sexy.
“I would very much like to undress you and learn more of your secrets. May i?”
“Yes,” she said, warmth rippling down her body from her flushing cheeks to the apex of her things. “Please.”
And oh, she was so glad she’d finally recognized the Lady’s Guide rules for what they were: a way to turn women into willing participants in their own subjugation. Because now she could revel in everything he made her feel without thinking there was anything wrong with her for feeling it.

This entire interaction is something we’ve all experienced at some point, that euphoria from wanting. It’s a pure hit of dopamine. There’s nothing better than really wanting something and realizing that there’s nothing stopping you from getting it.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend not only this novella but Cowley's entire catalogue. Just last year, we reviewed her Opposite of Magic series for the podcast, and it was absolutely fantastic. I highly encourage you to delve into our Clandestine Magic trilogy, which must be read in order, with Subversive as the first in the series. If you are into female empowerment, revolution, and gaslamp fantasy, Cowley is the author for you!

While I was working, I came across an article that mentioned this novella and was immediately intrigued. I didn't look too closely afterward, as I didn't want more information than I had, so I was surprised with the unique setting. It takes place in another America, Maryland, I believe, and there are wizards. And, of course, our leading lady Pen.

I thought there was a lot packed into this story and enjoyed the romance element. One Wizard's assistant for me, please! I felt the characters were well done with interesting personalities and wanted more with them. I would read a series about those two making their way in this world. There are other books in this world for me to check out, so there is some consolation with me wanting more.

I thought it was cute, unique, and well-developed. I enjoyed this indie novella.

The elements of Rumpelstiltskin and references to fairytales had me wanting to dive into more historical feeling, cozy fantasies. I would also love a good gothic retelling.

INTO THE BARGAIN by Colleen Cowley is an adult, fantasy dystopian, romance novella set in the author’s CLANDESTINE MAGIC world. This is twenty-five year old Pen Novak, and the omnimancer’s assistant story.

SOME BACKGROUND: Some time in the middle of the twenty-first century, America is controlled by wizards and magic, and women’s rights are behind by more than a century. Only men aka wizards are granted the use of magic, women are meant to be seen and not heard.

Told from omniscient third person perspective (Pen) INTO THE BARGAIN follows Pen Novak and her desperate attempts to find a husband. Two weeks before she will be homeless, Pen wants to meet the local omnimancer, a man searching for a woman to be his wife but the wizard is not at home. Pen finds herself returning daily, and with the help of the omnimancer’s assistant, is willing to stake her claim before anyone else. All is not as it appears to be, and Pen will find herself falling for a man whose own life has been destroyed by someone else.

The relationship between Pen and the assistant begins as a bargain, of a sorts. Pen visits every day, staying in the house owned by the wizard, while the assistant begins to slowly reveal the reality of the situation. Falling for the assistant was never in the plans but Pen will discover the secrets and lies of the man she was hoping to love. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate but mostly implied.

INTO THE BARGAIN is a novella length story of power and control, betrayal and vengeance, magic and mayhem, secrets and lies, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate yet dynamic.

I was kindly gifted an ARC by the author, so I'm here to write down a few honest thoughts.

This is a charming novella of roughly 90 pages and when beginning to read I was immediately intrigued. Set in an alternate America in which magic and wizards exist, this initially gave Bridgerton era vibes, seemingly with a backdrop of women's suffrage and rights. However as I kept reading I began to realise it is set in the modern day as there were references to reading from micro film and a character directly refers to the 21st Century. I did find this a little jarring, however after researching Cowley's other books in the universe that's on me for not getting it!

I enjoyed Cowley's writing style, especially the way in which she world builds naturally as the story progresses instead of spoonfeeding it all in a giant heap at the beginning as some others do.

In terms of plot, I felt it flowed quite well. I thought there may have been a twist in terms of the MMC but I wasn't disappointed by what actually happened in the slightest. Also, everyone loves a happy ending!

I felt the characters were well written, with the FMC of Pen resonating with me. Those feelings of life getting away from you, and feeling stuck would resonate with most women at some point in their lives I would imagine. I particularly enjoyed the character development of the FMC and was cheering her on as she seemed to grow into her personality.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I definitely want to check out the other books in this universe!

What if, all your life, you've been told one thing but you feel something else entirely?

Pen Novak is stuck between two kinds of fairy tales: the sentimental fairy tale, in which marriage is the only means to happiness, and the Grimm fairy tale, in which stepping out of line can lead to frightening consequences. But when she meets the clever and compassionate assistant to the powerful man she hopes to marry, Pen begins building a different kind of fairy tale for herself: one in which she chooses her own ending.

Colleen Cowley's novella combines my favorite aspects of romantasy: great characters, evocative world building, and that liminal space between escapism and realism. I get to sigh happily over the romance while also thinking deeply about what it means to be stuck -- and how to get out of that kind of situation. Is there anything better than a book that challenges us to think and feel at the same time?

I also admire Cowley's ability to weave poignant, often humorous descriptions and fairy tale references into her narrative while still keeping the focus squarely on the characters. Cowley writes lyrical yet spare prose; she doesn't waste words!

I should note that I was an early reader of this novella, but that mainly means I had the chance to read several drafts -- each time finding new things to love about it!

Hope many others find joy in this novella, as I did. There's something special--dare I say enchanting?--about a story that can give you a happily-ever-after without making you feel like such an ending is impossible in the real world.

Penelope has two weeks before her flat is sold and she’s forced to live with her aunt and uncle and be a proper lady. Being 25, she has low marriage prospects. Pen is now desperate to marry a man she’s never met to make sure she doesn’t get stuck living with and watching her aunt and uncle’s children. She’s determined to marry the famous omnimancer Porten. She goes to see him, but he’s not there. Instead, his assistant is and allows her to stay and wait for Porten. Pen comes back every day waiting for Porten and slowly starts to learn more and more about his assistant and find him more and more attractive, and begins to wonder whether she should marry Porten or not.

This was a very adorable read! A quick novella, but enjoyable nonetheless!

Pen wants to do things a proper lady shouldn’t, and I loved seeing her change as the story progressed to someone realizing it’s okay to want things and to get them, and also voice your thoughts and opinions.

The assistant is so mysterious throughout the book and you just keep guessing who he might be, why is he so secretive, etc. Just thought was fun to read!

And the romance was unexpectedly steamy! It was a slow build up, and the emotions that just built up to the point that they just want to devour each other, and when they finally kiss, it was perfection 👌🏻

I really enjoyed this novella and look forward to reading more in this world! I received a free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Love fairy tales, Victorian-inspired vibes, and mysterious gentlemen who get more dashing the longer you're around them... even when you're determined to marry their dodgy employers? This lovely story in the world of Colleen Cowley's Clandestine Magic series is for you!

I absolutely devoured the Clandestine Magic novels, so I was already familiar with Cowley's wizard-dominated 21st century where the women's rights movement is about 100 years behind schedule. That whole systematic-exclusion-of-women-from-economic-self-sufficiency business has our heroine, Pen, in a tight spot, one she hopes to resolve by marrying the city's resident magician. Except the magician is a bounder, and his witty nameless assistant is the one capturing Pen's attention, even as he works to help her hook her rather undesirable catch.

I'd say this tale verges on novella length, and there's plenty of space for some lovely character development, a little righteous feminist rage, some Clandestine Magic cameos, and even the satisfying resolution of a mystery. (Oh, and there's just a little bit of steam—bit like the cherry on top.)

Do give it a read, and then jump right into the rest of the Clandestine Magic world!

Into the Bargain is a very cute and addictive novella set in an alternate 21st Century America with a wizarding take on Rumpelstiltskin and a new women's suffrage movement on the rise.

I really enjoyed the characters. The mystery surrounding the assistant's past was really enticing. Penelope's feelings of desperation against the situation with her uncle, and her frustration at wanting more in this stifling, patriarchal society were incredibly relatable. I love how her personality really shined whenever she was with the assistant. He allowed her curiosity and intelligence to thrive when for her entire life she was forced to restrain herself. And their chemistry was so good! Despite the novella being less than 90 pages long, their romance has such a slow-burn feel to it. The yearning. The sexual tension. It's all wonderfully there. And the moment they do confess their feelings to each other was so sweet and perfect.

I haven't read anything else in the Clandestine world by Colleen Cowley, but I hope Penelope and the assistant can make a cameo appearance in a later installment. I really want to see where they end up. I do plan on continuing with the series. Or rather, actually start the series because this was my introduction to both the author and the world, and it was a lot of fun.

I recommend this for lovers of fantasy romance, cozy fantasy, and even gaslamp fantasy.

I received a review copy in advance for free, but all opinions are my own.

I had no idea this would be such a short read, but kudos to Colleen Cowley - this novella didn't skimp on character development, romance, or world building.

I really liked its charming tone, and was intrigued by how it takes a magical setting that might seem like it would be in the past but is actually in the 21st century. It's a world I'm looking forward to exploring more in the other books in this series.

I will say that while most of the book had a good pace, the ending was a bit rushed and even in a way a bit anticlimactic, at least as far as confronting our villains went. I also

Overall, this was an interesting, romantic, fast-but-fully-realized read that I really enjoyed.

I thoroughly enjoyed this cozy low stakes fantasy romance novella, and found it a quick & easy read.

I loved the fairytale quest the author wove through the story, and how readers are able to win a prize if they discover the fairytale elements and fill in the form (link located in front matter of ebook — enter by March 1st, 2024).

The book was set in an interesting world, where the characters lived in the 21st century, but it was gaslamp, and women's rights were basically non-exsistent. There was excellent representation of feminism and low-key feminine rage.

Themes I enjoyed the most: wizards, bargains, feminist awakenings, spells & potions, fairytale quest, slow burn to steamy, she needs to marry, he won't tell her his name.

💢 𝙏𝙒𝙨: consensual sexual scenes (low detail), gender inequality/ misogyny, DV (low detail, verbal)

☆I recieved an ARC of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own honest opinions☆

Colleen Cowley is definitely into fairy tales. She even challenges readers to find as many references as they can to other fairy tales within the pages of ‘Into The Bargain’.

She sets her fantasy romance in an America controlled by wizards and 100 years behind on women’s rights, in what she calls the ‘clandestine magic world’. Here, women are at a distinct disadvantage- even worse than women in some 21st century countries. In fact (to paraphrase Jane Austen): “A young lady with no income—and shortly no home—must be in want of a wizard husband.”

It’s not a Barbie world though it called the movie to mind. Both this book and movie put the spotlight on expectations that society - led by the patriarchy - and women themselves have of the role of women. “All this time, she’d thought the alternative to being a lady was an unspeakable fate—instead of the reality, which was to be a woman.”

It’s a HEA so rest assured that, after some slight tribulations, everyone gets what they deserves - especially Pen.

This was such a fun little novella! I really enjoyed the expansion from the short story, especially the lengthening of the intimate scenes! I loved the dynamic between Pen and the Assistant.
.
I did get a little caught up pinning down the fairytale references, but it's like a fun side quest built right into the story. 😂 I loved it. And this is short enough to reread if you want to ignore them on the first go and just enjoy the story.
.
I've said before how much I love the world that Cowley built for this series, and I think this novella is a great introduction to it ( but it can be read completely independent of the Clandestine Magic trilogy!)
.
This is an excellent spin on Rumplestiltskin! No children involved in this bargain! Though there is a kniffty potion. There's also plenty of oppressive ideals being crushed!

4.5 rounded up. Novellas are quite challenging because you're trying to do a lot in much fewer pages. I loved Cowley's Clandestine Magic series. While this story isn't connected and happens just within the same world, Cowley manages to bring forth all the things that made her such a greater writer for the series.

The MCs are lovable and there is enough information for you to see them develop as good, progressive human beings. Cowley manages to continue the political thread and messaging we see from the Clandestine Magic series, which is really needed in these truly terrible MAGA times. And throughout all of this, she still manages to complete a pretty heart-wrenching and sweet romance. It's an amazing feat that not many writers can do.

I look forward to seeing what else she puts out in the world.

I’ve read a shorter version of this story before in an anthology, so, when I saw the author was expanding it, I had to read it. This is a fairy tale unlike any other fairy tale: it has the right amount of harsh reality to ground the sweet romance, and thereby make it more meaningful, while also feeling just a little fantastic in the way a fairy tale should be. Indeed, since the struggle for equal rights often feels unending, there was something satisfying about this being a fairy tale. If the concept itself weren’t enough, I deeply enjoy these characters, and while I’d want to see them go through life together, the book does end at just the right point. The fairy tale references are awesome and skillfully done, and just overall this is a story worth reading.

In just a short amount of pages, Colleen was fully able to transport us into the book's world, set the scene, and have us quickly get attached to the main characters and their romance, as well as both their issues and goals, especially how stuck Pen is after her father's will gave their house to her uncle, and her quest for independence and freedom. I loved Colleen's writing and storytelling! Most of the time it didn't even feel like a novella, it was the right pacing, and I was fully invested in Pen and the omnimancer's assistant, as well as some of the side characters. It has historical vibes, wizards, magic, spells, women fighting for their rights, a soft, sweet romance and a little steam, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! And the end was pretty exciting! 👀 Recommend for a lovely, quick read!

Now I'm even more curious to check out her series and full-length novels, especially after those cameos! Will definitely be reading them very soon 😍🔥✨

Fantastic novella set in the world of Clandestine. No need to read the Clandestine series in order to understand, but I greatly enjoyed seeing characters pop up from that series. One is such a wonderful character, and the author did an amazing job making her seem well rounded, despite the short story. I felt for Pen’s situation and I enjoyed travelling through her story, getting more information about her as the tale continued.
Such a lovely novella that introduced new characters and mentions old ones. I can’t wait to see if we will have a continuation of Pen’d story in the future.
