beginner guide for natural medicine

This is a good book through the lens of it being a beginners guidebook for natural medicine. However, I don’t feel like the author gave enough credit for modern medicine to be used also. Some of the diseases that he suggested for natural medicine, such as sepsis should really be left to medical professionals as this is a very deadly disease if not treated. Overall, this book does have some good tips, just be mindful of the information given and use your best judgment.

pretty garden healthy body

Talk about killing two birds with one stone! I’ve been meaning to take my garden to the next level. And now it’s prettier and more fragrant , too. And the herbs and flowers are supercharging my health to boot. Nicely illustrated and well referenced

Well organised, some useful tips, but exercise caution

This book is well laid out and easy to follow. It starts with a history of herbal medicines and comparisons between modern medicine and herbal medicine. There are lots of references to Big Pharma (in a negative light). The book progresses to discuss creating the ideal apothecary cabinet, including where to find herbs in the US, UK, and Europe, and how to grow and harvest herbs. It then moves onto ‘Herbal Remedies for Every Ailment’, and this is where I felt, at times, very uncomfortable.

While the ‘Herbal Remedies for Every Ailment’ section acknowledges that individuals will need to turn to modern medicine for things like broken bones, having teeth extracted, and surgery, at times I think it needs to be clearer that herbal medicine cannot be used in place of modern medicine for serious conditions like sepsis, Addison’s Disease, kidney infections, etc. It would be dangerous to think otherwise. So although this section does contain the best information in the book in terms of treating less serious ailments, I strongly encourage caution and thorough research of conditions, before turning to a herbal remedy for some of the ailments listed.

The final sections cover herbal remedies for mental and physical performance, and cosmetic and hygienic use. I found these sections useful. There are then sections on how to make your own essential oils and raw herbal teas. The book ends with a glossary.

In summary, this book is easy to follow and it’s easy to find information with the useful contents page. There are some valuable tips and practical advice, but also what, in my view, would be dangerous inaction for serious conditions. I would recommend using it for treating things like aches and pains, dry skin, and stings, and make sure you stick to modern medicine for anything serious.

This an excellent natural medicine book everyone should have in their home. This covers a vast array of health problems, either as preventative measures or as a remedy.
The book is well done and has some pictures on the herbs (though I would’ve like to have seen more but that’s just a personal preference).
The other important component of this book is the information about pharmaceutical companies and how much money they make on drugs that don’t necessarily help us (because of all the side effects). It’s the same as religion vs spirituality; if astrology was also taught in schools, how many less lost souls would we have in the world. If everyone at least just read books like this one just once and then decided their own course of action, then at least we are getting somewhere because we are aware of ALL information that we can choose from, and not just the ones we are force-fed.
Here's an excerpt: Many centuries ago, humankind had only one solution to treat ailments and support overall wellness. Then, the world became more civilized, and, to a large degree, we’ve convinced ourselves that we are also growing more intelligent. This belief is a true to a certain degree, as we have access to solutions today that our ancestors didn’t even dream about. But what does true intelligence really mean? While we are surely making progress in certain regards, our ability to be independent and rely on natural resources to sustain ourselves have been crippled. At the center of this process of deterioration, we find nothing but an interconnected web of lies, and make-beliefs pushed by a minority for whom the health and wellness of the majority is merely an opportunity to gain profit – Big Pharma…

A good basic primer.

The Natural Medicine Guidebook serves as a useful introduction to the world of herbal remedies for beginners. Author Stephen Sharp provides a thoughtful overview explaining the historical roots and health benefits of natural medicine compared to conventional therapies. His passion for the healing power of plants is evident throughout. I particularly enjoyed the engaging sections covering topics like foraging for wild herbs and setting up your own apothecary.
The book's strength lies in its comprehensive nature. Sharp offers practical guidance on growing, harvesting, and preparing a diverse array of herbal treatments, from teas and tinctures to salves and essential oils. The remedies are organized by ailment, making it easy to reference treatments for common health complaints. Those new to herbalism will appreciate the clear, no-fuss approach to preparing natural cures at home.
However, I found the actual remedy recommendations quite basic, lacking some of the depth I hoped for. And the book's loose structure, while conversational, can make it difficult to pinpoint specifics at times. Those well-versed in herbal medicine may desire more robust information. But on the whole, The Natural Medicine Guidebook succeeds as a dependable primer for anyone seeking to explore the healing power of nature's pharmacopeia.

Epic Read, Great for EVERYONE

I've read a lot of holistic medicine books. Over the 50s. And I can't remeber a single one that had a whole section for "The Role of Herbal Medicine in Various Cultures." I found this section to be amazing because we come with our own pre-conceived notions of herbal medicine and this book really supported one of my friends to break through the picking up a pill to solve her issues and instead to look at more holistic and sustainable/regenerative ways of living.

This book even talks about "Modern Medicine vs Herbal Medicine" and how the modern medicine is created so that big pharma companies can have patent-protected things (that way they get LOTS of money) while herbal medicine is made by Mother Earth and there are no patents on it - so they cant make money off of it.

As I am in Europe right now taking a trip, normally residing in the US, I also really enjoyed the "Easy to Find Herbs in the UK and Europe" area which gave me an idea of some of the different plants and what to look for.

The cover of this book looks so fresh and inviting that you want to delve right in, to find out the secrets within its covers. Author Stephen H Sharp has been involved in the health wellness industry for almost 20 years, and offers a beginner’s guide to sourcing, growing and making your own natural remedies for an impressive list of ailments. He argues against big pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies having such a major stake in pushing their products, which they do so successfully because of large advertising and marketing budgets. The answer to many of our health questions and problems can be found in nature, but busy people often opt for the quick-fix – take a pill – rather than taking the time to research alternative, natural ways of dealing with health issues. While taking and applying natural products won’t always be the best option for dealing with complex health issues, there are some good suggestions about how to treat minor ailments with a little help from mother nature.

The book explains how herbalism existed in different forms in different countries. Then different herbs are presented and how to procure them. Online sources of purchase are also mentioned in the novel for US and UK residents. After procurement, harvesting techniques are presented.
Most of the herbs listed can be bought from the supermarkets.
The best part of the book is in chapter five where the author lists how common ailments can be cured with herbs and herbal remedies. Surprisingly, neem tree leaves is not mentioned as a remedy in the recovery from chicken pox.
Cures for bad liver, anxiety and acne are noteworthy. Method of making tinctures, antibiotics and infusions is given in detail.
Dont be fooled by page count as the last thirty pages are references. It is a short and sweet book that can be read in a day by anyone.

Awesome resource to get started!!

This is a great book for getting started with herbal remedies. It provides the history of how we got to where we are with modern medicine and compares alternative to contemporary. Then it breaks things down in several different ways. Provides what you need tonget started collecting and growing herbs at home, even making essential oils at home. Then it goes into one or two remedies for a LONG list of ailments. Then you get into great uses for different herbs. Categorical uses and specific uses. I feel like this is great for anyone starting and you won't get overwhelmed with the vast sea of herbs - it keeps it simple and concise. Then as you get these under your belt you can expand later if you want!
Well written and easy to follow. This is 100% going on my shelf at home!!

But does it work?

Mr. Sharp's exhaustive examination of "natural medicine" leaves no stone unturned in its anti-pharma argument for herbal remedies. One must objectively ask along the way, however, do these treatments actually work? What about the risks inherent in self-diagnosis and self-medication with herbs and tinctures? I am impressed with the breadth of his knowledge but less so with his contention that herbal remedies work for serious conditions such as diabetes, cancer and certain mental illnesses.

More than just a guidebook

The Natural Medicine Guidebook is packed with information. I was so interested in just the history of herbal remedies that I would have been happy with just that but there’s so much more — from simple tips such as “remember to date your remedies” to much more complex instructions. This book covers it all!
