Rate this book
How well do you know your child? More importantly, how could you help them navigate through a traumatic series of events?

Adults often don't know where to begin when soothing a child's fears after troublesome world events or from a crisis within the home. If you're a parent, guardian, educator, coach, or advocate for a child, you have numerous opportunities to guide them in their development.

Your role plays a crucial part in a child's development, even if your advocacy and presence in a child's life feel small to you. When a caregiver gains more insight into the importance of trauma sensitivity, they provide a child with the opportunity for resilience and success.

With approximately 70% of people experiencing traumatic events by adulthood, we need to become champions for children so they can find a healing route toward an improved future.

My daughter has been going through some issues I do not wish to discuss in this review. To help her, I downloaded Trauma-Sensitive Parenting by Jennifer Alushan. The book is a valuable resource for parents, caregivers, and educators dealing with trauma in children and youth. Drawing from personal experiences, Allushan makes research findings accessible and emphasizes recognizing triggers, responding with patience, and applying appropriate techniques. The book offers practical guidance on fostering self-esteem, understanding developmental stages, and creating supportive environments. It also discusses the need for professional help, community resources, and self-care for caregivers. Real-life anecdotes and tangible examples enhance the narrative, making it both engaging and informative. Allushan effectively demystifies complex concepts, providing a comprehensive, empathetic guide to nurturing safety, resilience, and healthy bonds in children affected by trauma.

Trauma-Sensitive Parenting is an insightful and compassionate guide for parents navigating the challenges of raising children who have experienced trauma. The author’s writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making complex topics accessible without feeling overwhelming.

One of my favorite aspects of this book was the inclusion of checklists at the end of each chapter. These were practical and actionable, helping to reinforce key concepts and making it easier to apply the information in real life. I appreciated how the author balanced research-based insights with real-world application, making the book both informative and useful.

While I don’t often reread books, this one is an exception—I would definitely return to it for guidance and reassurance. It’s a valuable resource for any parent or caregiver looking to better support children with a trauma history. I highly recommend it to those seeking a thoughtful and practical approach to trauma-informed parenting.

A Must Read for Parents

This book is excellent. It gives insight into the different types of trauma while explaining how a parent can help their child in the best way possible to overcome obstacles and live their best life. I was fascinated to learn about the two extra facets to the original “Flight/Flight” scenario and it makes so much sense. Wish I’d been able to read this book years ago.

Very educational

I found this book to be very educational and enlightening. The two most important things I took from this book are how to recognize the signs of trauma in a child and what resiliency is.

This was basically just a literature review on the topic of trauma informed parenting. It also provided some good strategies for parents to use. I didn’t learn anything new, but it’s a decent resource to recommend to parents.

Alushan’s Trauma-Sensitive Parenting is an empowering and validating resource for caregivers navigating the complex landscape of raising children who have experienced adversity—or who simply need a gentler, more attuned approach to emotional safety.

From the very first chapters, Alushan brings clarity to the often-misunderstood impact of trauma on children’s development, behavior, and nervous system responses. Rather than focusing on correction or control, the book encourages connection, regulation, and co-regulation as the foundation of trust and healing.

Its focus on nurturing safety, attunement, and resilience —while giving you new tools to deepen your approach. It’s a powerful reminder that trauma-informed parenting isn’t permissive—it’s profoundly strategic and deeply brave.

Exxellent Parenting Resource

I love how the topic of trauma is handled. Children are rarely able to express deep emotion, so it is especially important for parents to develop a sensitivity and awareness of trauma. Having been a foster parent, I've seen firsthand the difference that loving, nurturing parenting can make. This resource is a wonderful addition to the available material out there to protect and heal our children; and if we can't do that, at least it provides tools to help them process the trauma. A good addition to the home library.
