Some are just extra. Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right? After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life).Flash Fire: When new Extraordinaries begin arriving in Nova City—siblings who can manipulate smoke and ice, a mysterious hero who can move objects with their mind, and a drag queen superhero with the best name and the most-sequined costume anyone has ever had—it’s up to Nick and his friends Seth, Gibby, and Jazz to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous. And new Extraordinaries aren’t the only things coming to light. Long-held secrets and neglected truths are surfacing that challenge everything Nick knows about justice, family, and being extraordinary. Which is a lot to handle when Nick really just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic. Will it all come together in the end or will it all go down in flames?Heat Wave: School’s out for the summer and a raging, malevolent heat has blanketed Nova City. Dark, twisted, probably evil shadows have drenched the doorsteps of her good people’s homes. And Nicholas Bell—fanboy, hero, ADHD-haver—is being super dramatic again. But something’s off, and Nick will need all his friends and loved ones together to uncover the truth before Nova City falls prey to the Burke family. A truth that will reveal a traitor in their midst and burn through their lives like a wildfire. 5 stars. Audiobook. Fun, witty, engaging, charming, endearing, heartfelt, immensely enjoyable. Narration by Michael Lesley is superb. The characters are incredible, likeable and supportive, yet flawed and struggling in all kinds of ways. The dad. OMG, the most awesomely embarrassing dad that any queer kid could ever wish for. The ‘ship. Gah, equal parts amazingly sweet and awkward, just what you want in a coming-of-age story. And Superheroes!! As if coming into his maturity and sexuality isn’t enough, we’re handling super powers and super friends as well? Yes, please. Book one was an absolute blast.
I love this author immensely and love this narrator to the moon and back. On the surface, it’s a fantastic young adult sci-fi story of high school superheroes, but runs a deeper parallel with present-day social issues. It was admittedly a tough read in 2025 as the US political climate mirrored some of the storyline. Sadly, this pulled me out of the story a few times and I wish I had read this years ago or years from now. But that’s a sensitive me thing, the characters and world building are top notch.
