As a lifelong baseball afficionado I thought the opening chapters of the book were rather juvenile and poorly written. As I persisted the stories seemed to get better, perhaps because I was learning new things whereas I thought I knew everything about Satchell Paige and Jackie Robinson. I particularly liked reading the tragi-inspirational stories about Jim Abbott and Pete Gray wisely placed back-to-back. The 'Did you know' segments at the back of each chapter became increasingly informative and interesting. I loved the chapter about the M&M boys and the race for Babe Ruth's HR record. I distantly knew Roger after he retired to the Anheuser beer distributorship in Gainesville, Florida, the University of Florida's home. My daughter went to public school with his sons. At the time I owned a printing business in the city and met Roger as a customer when we printed T-shirts for him with his design featuring a photo of him slugging super-imposed with '61 in 61'. He gave me a personalised autographed basebaseball which I lost unfortunately in the housefire of my now-grown daughter. The chapter on Koufax gives an amazing lesson in physics and gravity. I learned a lot about Mariano Rivera and Mike Piazzo. So I was turned around. I rate this book 4 stars. Not a strong 4 stars edging on 3 but 4 nonetheles. It was inspiring.

2 stars for a baseball book?! Yeah. Sorry Mr. Patton, but this reads like a 10th graders assignment to do a research paper. There is very little depth to any of these stories and most of the info you can get from thoudands of sources. While I enjoy the quick snips about these 15 different stories, it left me wanting to actually know the incredible story in detail. It looks like the author just gathered the backs of books about each of these stories and included all of the synopsis' in one short book. Sure, the stories are incredible, but I am not sure what story. For example, there is a story about Jackie Robinson breaking the color bariier. But that is about the extent of what we get. If you truly want incredible baseball stories, dig deep into each of the "headlines" offered in this book. There are many sources out there, with details too!

I want to give this book a lower rating but I really liked the stories. The thing that made this book terrible was the AI voice that was used for the audible book recording. Awful! Mispronouncing names, states, statistics. Really bad.

Sadly this was written at a basic level and not really that interesting.

While I had known about most of these, it was still an enjoyable dive into some baseball history.
