Forest Bathing by Elise Ingram. I received an e-copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Forest Bathing is a Japanese practice of immersing oneself in nature. It’s not just meditation in the forest. Shinrin-yoku is practicing mindfulness and experiencing the sights-sounds-smells-tastes-feelings of the forest. Not just any Forest but one that you feel comfortable in, and know the safety aspect and what to expect for wildlife around you. The experience of all of the senses combined is therapeutic, not to mention the benefits of unplugging and sitting/ walking quietly in nature. Forest Bathing is not hiking a trail. It is slowing down, gettin rid of distractions and being fully present.
It’s about more than just reducing stress. There are multiple health benefits of forest bathing and studies to back them up.
While there are other modalities similar to Forest Bathing, the key is using as many senses as you can. Shintoism, is Japan’s indigenous religion. Japanese culture focuses on harmony with nature by slowing down and engaging fully with the senses.
While you can do guided Forest Bathing, you can go at it alone, any season. Find your spot, take it all in and honor what the forest has to offer.
