First issue was intriguing then it went off the rails and never recovered.
I have so many issues with this book, maybe I start with something positive: The artwork is good, the lettering is great and the character designs are cool for the most part.
Now onto the negatives: The story is just bad. Instead of introducing the afterlife, showing how everything is done and so on, the story disrupts the status quo and sends random characters on a goose chase that makes no sense. The main character is a whiny, can't do anything on its own, but is of course very special (Harry Potter). The side characters are without exception either gay or trans or both. Diversity is good and important, but this is too much for my taste, since neither traits are woven into the story at all. There are multiple parts in the story that make no sense, e.g. the dad exiling himself (why?) or the adventure of the mother that leads to nothing. And my biggest (personal) gripe: This book touches upon a lot of concept that Sandman also does. Sandman is just infinitely better in every aspect.
I don't know whom this book is for, but I know it's not for me.
Fun premise with good art, but I'm not necessarily hooked or sold on any of the characters. If they make another deluxe book two, then I will certainly give it a read. There are a couple particular plot points that I want to see where Stephanie takes this!
The first issue really caught my attention and I did enjoy the entire collection but I think the pacing could have been better. The story seemed to be a bit slow to get to story points that we all thought were predictable. I do want to see where vol. 2 goes but I would not call myself a fan yet.
Art is fine, colouring is the best part. Story was poor to me. Nothing hooked me. It was easy reading but I wasn't invested. Resd the first arc and I didn't care about any character.
