In HARVEST ISLAND by Lissa Raines, we meet Samantha "Sam" Anderson, a divorced woman raising twins on a teacher's salary. Haunted by her father's disappearance fifteen years ago, she seeks closure. When Sam receives an envelope in the mail with photos and news clippings of her childhood with a cryptic handwritten note, she feels compelled to find out more about him. If John Garcia is alive, why hasn't he contacted her or her brother Kyle? If he is dead, what happened and why?

Compounding this ache for closure, Tom, her beloved stepfather, has developed memory issues and is hospitalized with pneumonia. Tom has done all the heavy lifting of parenting, so Sam adores him.

Sam's journey to find her father flows along two storylines. In one, Sam and her neighbor, Detective Spencer McKenna, search for information about John Garcia clue by clue, interview by interview. In the second storyline, Sam's dreams take her on a spiritual journey where she meets colorful, allegorical characters who are compelled to guide her. Both storylines challenge her to examine her life and beliefs.

The stakes grow deadly as Sam and Detective Spencer uncover information someone wants to keep buried. Twists and turns in the story pivot on clues and the discovery of secret after secret about the mysterious John Garcia. Each fact about him evokes more questions than answers.

As the story flows between Sam's increasingly dangerous reality and her fanciful dreamworld, she develops greater insight and tenacity. Her inner and outer journeys overlap and intersect in surprising, supernatural, and witty ways.

Thanks to the clean, crisp narrative and natural dialogue, HARVEST ISLAND delivers a fast-paced adventure with a larger supernatural message that lingers long after the book is closed. Readers may cringe and laugh at the flaws in the dreamworld characters that they recognize in others and themselves.

I gave this book only 3 stars, but I think it’s because I listened to the audiobook. I would not recommend listening. It was a bad virtual voice narration. I do believe, if I had read it, I could have given it 4-5 stars.
