YOUTUBE VIDEO REVIEW: https://youtu.be/W6iqos_cJ4M

Updated Review 11/12/25: I'm at a loss as to why I rated this volume so low the first time I read it, and I'm unsure if it's because of different seasons or what, as I found this volume to be so comforting!

I'm currently experiencing the loss of holiday tradition among family and extended family, so seeing these characters come together in peace and happiness really touched my heart. Their situation is nothing like mine, but it gave me hope that my husband and I, as well as my kiddos, can still celebrate in a special way, even if it's different than years past or not as lavish.

For that reason alone, I had to bump up my rating to five stars because of how much it moved me! Granted, I loved the volume as a whole, but that scene specifically is one I so needed right now. <3

Original Review 6/3/24: I’ll be honest and say I didn’t really know what to feel after I finished this volume. Mind you, I didn’t dislike it! However, this series is very different than other manwha I read.

I don't think the other manhwa I read lack "heart" or conviction, but this series feels much more heartfelt and has much deeper layers that result in me thinking of the story and the characters' struggles, growth, and an overall movement of growing closer together as a family. I don't have moments of utter outrage where I rant about how I hate X character (though Duke Stoke is at the top of that list) or immediately look up merch of "best girl" so X character can be represented in my merch collection.

I suppose at the heart of this series it is one that makes you look inward and think about what family means and what that looks like in real life. Granted, I realize these are just fictional characters, but this specific volume hit me hard on motherhood. Abigail may be a "stepmom," but her emotions were just as real to me, how I too have struggled with what it means to be a mom and how to be a "good" mom to my children. It is a fear that I don't think ever leaves, but as Abigail shows, the love and joy we have for our child(ren) resonate into every other part of our life that we boldly continue to move forward.

With that though, I would say she equally shows how important support is from another significant other. I don't think Abigail ever imagined being encouraged by Sabrian to not worry. Not only that, but there is something very powerful when you and your significant other are on the same page and the relief that follows when you see a situation the same way. A great example was the talks about Blanche getting married one day. Very good!

The romance was SOOOOO good and as shallow as it might be compared to everything else said here, it was my favorite part! It has been DEEPLY satisfying to see Sabrian slowly make his feelings known to Abigail! And where it ended…EEEEEPPPPPPP!!

While this volume was much heavier than I anticipated, I am looking forward to seeing what unfolds next!

Seriously, I'm still blown away by how much I'm loving Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom! I'm four volumes in now, which is wild considering I never thought I'd even pick this series up, let alone enjoy it this much.

This latest volume really hit some emotional notes with the birthday celebrations, some characters getting sick (always tugs at the heartstrings!), and the possibility of moving back into shared rooms and maybe even a bed again.

There were definitely some genuinely touching moments mixed with some real sadness, and that ending has me feeling a little down about what might be coming next. But yeah, another fantastic volume in this surprisingly great series!

I'm still loving this series so much. This volume focuses a lot on the dynamics of the family being created, and as such, each character undergoes some growth by the end. And I adore all three of them.

They’re officially a family!

These three are so adorable together, and you can clearly see how much they care about each other. And now Abigail and Sabrian are going to share a bedroom again. Things are getting g good!

The adventures continue. A lot of fall-out

It is clear that Sabrian is trying to figure out a way to indicate to Abigail that he would like for them to be closer, and failing. Abigail is still panicked at the thought of pressuring him. And Blanche is worried that this may cause problems.

More revelations occur, and also there is a mysterious epidemic, and trouble with the mermaids, or perhaps with nobles who cause trouble with the mermaids.

This was a really cute volume. I don't think the king's character development is realistic enough but at the same time I realize that this is a manga for teens/kids. The king overcoming his trauma seemed too easy. That's not how trauma works but at the same time I guess they didn't want it to be trauma porn. I hope it has nothing to do with the fact that he's a man and the dumb idea that men have "get over stuff" and not feel feelings like fear and sadness.
All in all I'm going to read the next volume because I want to see what happens next (it ended kinda cliffhanger-ish.

It's almost Abigail's birthday, and, because they're starting to publicly get along, Sabrian wants to throw her a large birthday celebration, at least as large as last year's 3-day marathon event. Abigail would love nothing more than a quiet celebration with just the three of them, but such an intimate affair would actually spark rumors again! Sabrian also struggles to find Abigail the perfect birthday present, and even presses Abigail's personal maid for some ideas. While Abigail is busy making new dresses for Blanche and herself for the parties, a mysterious illness strikes the kingdom and reaches plague-like status, and even hits within the castle walls!

This deceptively complex, emotionally rich series continues to build upon the themes and layers of character development from previous volumes by providing ample opportunities for Abigail and Sabrian to be fully realized characters. We get a few beautiful moments between Blanche and Abigail as well, though not nearly enough page time for Blanche in this volume. Sabrian's other family members also come into this one to complicate things -- his older brother, who is probably up to something, and the shadow of his mother threatens the final few pages, leaving readers on a menacing cliffhanger.

Loved what Abigail did for Karen in this one, that was sweet! Cute Blanche moments! A husband who tries so hard (but is also sending conflicting vibes)! Birthday time! I loved that Abigail figured out some things and tried to help with that as well. Plus, there is more. I had a lot of fun with this one. Not sure about the guy in the mirror, I love the friendship between Abigail and him, but I don't know, I just could do without it. I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there.

I do really love actually developing the characters and having them face their trauma in a proper way and showing how they are healing properly in a slow paced fashion with ups and downs. Great convos about SA, body image, societal expectations of women and couples, child abuse, and loneliness. Does probably the best job at talking about actually issues and developing their characters in the rofans I’ve read so far. Which is around 200 btw

In Summary
This installment has a couple of characters with the potential to cause trouble hanging around in the background, but the focus of Volume 4 is Abigail, Sabrian, and Blanche working toward becoming a family. There’s plenty to adore and laugh at as the trio figure out how to celebrate Abigail’s birthday and how to care for each other when illness strikes. A truly adorable installment to this fairytale rom-com.

The Review
Karen Stokes got introduced in the previous volume, but she’s already on her way out. Thanks to Abigail’s unwitting good-naturedness, Karen’s won over by the Queen and disappears as a rival for the King’s affections. That leaves old Lord Stoke on his own to try to machinate palace affairs (which he stubbornly continues to do).

However, the other character introduced in Volume 3, Lord Raven, remains on the scene with the narrative dropping more tidbits about him. When Abigail’s birthday comes, he personally delivers a magical item as a gift. Thus we discover he possesses the ability to cast magic, a detail that makes me wonder whether he had any involvement with Abigail’s death and resurrection. At any rate, it’s clear his interest in Abigail goes beyond that of Queen/sister-in-law, but his true intent plus the reason for the apparent rift between him and his half-brother remains a tantalizing mystery.

In the meantime, the bulk of this installment focuses on the deepening relationships between the King, Queen, and Princess. Almost nothing is said about Abigail’s “wicked face” in this installment, but she’s still making plenty of wild expressions as Sabrian clumsily strives to be a good father and husband. At this point, Abigail and Sabrian are both in the in-love-but-doesn’t-know-what-to-do-and-doesn’t-realize-the-feelings-are-mutual stage of the game. Watching the pair stumble around in their marriage with little Blanche cheering them on is quite adorable to watch.

And actually, there’s plenty of opportunity for all three royals to both embarrass and endear themselves to one another with the occasion of Abigail’s birthday (Blanche’s embroidered bunny family is CUTE!) and the illness that lays low Blanche, then Abigail. The mystery malady’s onset, detection, and resolution/eradication goes full-circle awfully fast, even accounting for Abigail’s modern-day knowledge. However, the “green disease” gives our characters the chance to worry and care for each other, so if you like sickbed tropes, you’ll have plenty to enjoy.

The “green disease” also opens the door for another character to enter the story. We’ve heard about Sabrian’s mother, and apparently she’ll be coming soon to the palace. So instead of an evil stepmom, we may have an evil mother-in-law appearing on the scene.

Extras include Sabrian’s Character Sheet and Artist’s Notes.

Sabrian really is starting to resemble a puppy when it comes to his interactions with Abigail. It's a bit of a miracle really that with the both of them constantly confirming how much they are glad that they've become a real family and are still together, neither one of them seems to have a clue as far as their actual relationship as a married couple. At least it seems as if Lady Karen has temporarily faded into the background after Abigail helps her out at the tea party. Somewhat curious that her family haven't made any big noise, though the incident with the mermaids could have been some other scheme of theirs given Sabrian's comment about the captain. The queen mother returning to the palace also seems to be a bit of a bad omen, right on top of when the family is coming back together, at least as far as anyone else can see. More than a few adorable moments with Sabrian backing up Abigail and Blanche starting to really latch onto having a family. Even if Karen isn't right in the thick of things at the moment though, why does Raven keep visiting Abigail? That's another odd one that doesn't seem to add up entirely.

I tried to keep these separate I really did. Ended up as another binge read so all blended into one volumes 1-5. Ize press is doing a great job cranking out stuff I want to read. The covers are beautiful, they all read the right way and genuinely I just look forward to the new releases. So much for cutting back on the pre-orders. In a way this was a retelling but very loosely based on Snow White. Stepmother that's not so evil but looks it, a talking mirror programmed to respond to the classic line.

The mirror was the best character and the king's jealously made me laugh. This one is pretty much a rom com in the child rearing genre with enemies becoming friends and allies. I've got a feeling the mirror is going to be Blanche's best ally. Looking forward to the next one.

Sabrian and Abigail get closer,to the point where Sabrian asks her to share a bedroom with him again.

There is also an outbreak of an illness resembling the arsenic poisoning of the green dyes in the Victorian era, which ends with Abigail and Blanche getting sick.

Also, lord Raven,Sabrian’s half brother, seems to be visiting Abigail more often,to what end we don’t know yet.

The cosy fantasy,not-yet-romance vibes are strong in this one.

Slowburn wholesome retelling with Isekai twist

It is nice that we learn more about Abigail's past life and also are see the relationship between herself and Sabrian develop more. However, there is still intrigue hidden within and we will hopefully see more of this within the next volume. Quick read and with moments of jocularity and also bittersweetness as well.

I enjoyed this volume, and I can see how the story is really starting to pick up with it as more attention is being given to characters that aren’t Abigail, as I expected. Happy to continue with it!
