I have no hesitation in recommending Ozgur Ertem’s book to anyone in Tech business management who is either working their way up the promotion ladder or someone who is well on their way to the top and wants to check in for fresh ideas.
The chapters follow a clear structure of:
1) A relevant quote;
2) A brief fictional story where Robert learns from his mentor, James;
3) A real life case study from the tech sector;
4) A summary of key takeaways;
5) Actions, exercises and reflection prompts;
6) Useful resources for further reading and references.
Business books authored in the US are prone to include information relevant only to the US market, making parts of it of little relevance to other markets. This book steers clear of that trap, with all the chapters covering areas that equally apply to other regions of the world. I’d go further than that, to say that almost all the chapters cover topics that could be applied to many other sectors outside the Tech sector, which is the source of the text and examples. Having worked in professional services and seen inside many businesses in sectors such as manufacturing and construction, I found it easy to relate the teachings into all those sectors. Also, it’s bang up to date in covering the recent issues thrown up by the pandemic and the need to WFH, with the risk of blurring work and home lives.

Educating Business Leaders

An interesting book on business leadership and how the future will make change essential in future business models and decisions. This is an interesting book in that it tries to give practical advice through real world situations and stories. The formatting is a little odd. It seems as if the author wanted each chapter to be singular and complete in and of itself. That was a little jarring as a read but it didn’t take away from the overall idea that was focused on the changing tech-driven business environment. This is a great book for anyone who is entertaining the idea of leadership. Enjoyed the actionable steps included in each chapter. This book is a great resource for those trying to prepare for business leadership. At least, it is a good read about the entry into business leadership and training in a distinctly different and imaginative way.

I downloaded CTRL+ALT+LEAD by Özgür Ertem because I sought a comprehensive guide to lead within my technical field. The book’s informative narrative and practical advice bridge the gap between theory and practice through engaging case studies and actionable steps. While its formatting may seem disjointed, the book’s focus on cultivating productive habits within a changing business environment shines through. Readers will appreciate the author’s insights on effective leadership, particularly the emphasis on leveraging team strengths rather than individual intelligence. With its tech-focused content, this book is essential reading for anyone invested in leadership, offering valuable lessons from iconic figures in the industry. This book stands out as a beacon of inspiration and wisdom, providing invaluable insights for leaders at all levels of experience.

Tech’ savvy.

Refreshing to see that human elements like trust and empathy are crucial assets in the tech’ savvy world. Very refreshing and reassuring indeed.
Leadership is about a journey of growth. Throughout the book the author uses case studies to get his points across and he has inspiring quotes from people like John F. Kennedy.
Interesting to see that talent isn’t everything as the case of Uber is looked at through a microscopic lens. Interesting too, the case of Facebook which undermined the 2016 US Presidential Elections. The book also examines Amazon and SpaceX.
An interesting read for the tech-savvy readership.
