River wanted this—in fact, he’d paid for it. Getting a dragon companion was a privilege. Having left the family business and made a name for himself as a sports agent, he was in the position to afford that privilege.
Charlie, the little dragon he loved on sight, was going to complete his life. Charlie would be a true and constant friend, assuaging that little bit of loneliness even his Italian family couldn’t.
The Dragonkin club assigned Aaron as River’s mentor, teaching him the requirements for a successful dragon companionship bond. So what if Aaron was incredibly handsome and accomplished? Still reeling from a failed relationship, Aaron was clearly not looking to meet someone, which was fine; River didn’t want a relationship, either. The little dragon would be enough companionship for his busy life.
But when River isn’t a quick study, Aaron must engage in advanced tutelage, and every day the three spend together makes it harder to imagine removing any piece from the puzzling found family they’ve unwittingly created.
As an avid MM romance fan, I eagerly read every ARC I can find on BookSirens. While I typically gravitate towards contemporary romance, "Hot Shots" by Tara Bennett caught my eye with its unique urban fantasy elements (steering clear of the usual vampires and werewolves that often dominate the genre). Trusting the author's creative prowess, I dove into this book, and wow, it nailed it.
First and foremost, let's talk about the dragons. Charlie and Daisy, the adorable little dragons, are more than just cute additions to the story—they are emotional support animals kept to alleviate anxiety. This thoughtful inclusion was both heartwarming and relevant, making the fantasy elements feel authentic and necessary. Bennett masterfully integrates these fantastical creatures into the narrative without overwhelming it, maintaining a perfect balance that satisfies both fantasy and romance enthusiasts.
The main characters, Aaron and River, are nothing short of spectacular. Their dynamics and development throughout the story are incredibly well-crafted. This is one of the best billionaire romance stories I've read, featuring two equal, self-sufficient individuals. Their relationship is rich and nuanced, offering a fresh take on the found family trope, which Bennett executes brilliantly.
The story exudes warmth and depth, overflowing with love and genuine emotion. I became an instant fan of Tara Bennett, admiring how she skillfully handles each trope and molds it into something extraordinary. The author's ability to build trust with readers through her characters and plot is commendable.
And then, there's the twist. The last 50 pages of "Hot Shots" are a rollercoaster of emotions, culminating in a poignant and heart-wrenching twist that left me in tears. The message of the story—never delay telling your loved ones that you love them—resonated deeply with me. It’s a powerful reminder wrapped in a beautifully written urban fantasy romance.
Overall, "Hot Shots" is the best urban fantasy book I've read this year. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance with a touch of fantasy. Tara Bennett has created a masterpiece that will stay with you long after you turn the last page.
Two perfect “Prince Charmings”. Both rich, both handsome, both goodie-do-gooders, neither could do no wrong. BUT there are pet dragons!!! I want, I want, my own pet dragon! Daisy and Charlie made the story for me. As for Aaron and River, I liked and enjoyed, but things were getting kinda boring until that big trip. Then the real excitement was happening.
This was an interesting first book from a new author, and it was a bit of a mix bag. For some reason the synopsis did not prepare me for what the story was really about, but I’m glad that the story ended up being better than what I was expecting. The plot and world were very creative, but the love story was where the book lost me a bit. I loved the dragons and the world that Bennett came up with, it was very sweet. The thing I had a hard time getting into was how insta love the story was, but insta love isn’t generally my cup of tea. Over all, it was a very cute story that was well worth the time it took to read.
Let me start off by saying that this book had all the things I love... family, and adorable pets. OK, maybe not ALL the things I love, but family did play a big part in this story and Charlie and Daisy stole the show!!!
Now, for the but... there were so many times that I was pulled completely out of the story by the horrendous lack of editing and proofreading. I know this is one of my pet peeves, but a quote begins and ends with quotation marks and this was just the tip of the iceberg! Too many grammatical errors to list... I believe this is the author's first book, maybe? I am hoping to see some vast improvements in Dear Draco, if not, I am pretty sure I will be calling it quits with this author!!! 🤞🤞🤞
Well Written & Very Interesting. The Dragons are not shifters they are actual pets & I want one LOL! River is the owner of a business with no time to himself so he decides to get a pet Dragon, Charlie. Since Dragons are exceptional creatures they need special care & handling. In enters Aaron the Dragon trainer. This book had all the feels you could imagine. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is kind of a random review because I didn’t like the book enough to bother to make my notes very cohesive.
I’ll start with the good:
It’s a cool world that was built. I wanted to see and learn more about it. The dragons were super cute and believable. I wish there had been more of a focus on the world building rather than the ridiculous amount of sex. Instead, it was like porn with a couple of animals in it. Could have been birds, dogs, cats, marmots, anything. Except maybe cows—too big.
The last ten percent was exciting and thrilling and right up my alley. It made the rest of the book easier to take. It had gobs of problems, too, but at least it was interesting.
I like that they are both near or over forty and also that they’re still really hot. I like that they said they could live without the other person, they just loved them so much it would be hard. That was way less codependent than many books.
But there wasn’t much of a plot. It was basically just them getting to know each other. It’s not quite on point to call this an urban fantasy because the only fantasy elements are the dragon pets.
Things went too well. There was absolutely no conflict with anything or anyone until the last 10%. It was a giant love fest.
The writing is really clunky; sentences are short and with similar meter and length even more than this poorly written review. I’m usually better but I kind of wanted to make a point.
At 20% in, all that was happening was that they were getting aroused constantly. You’d think men were completely incapable of controlling their libidos and got erect anytime they see someone they find attractive. They both knew they wanted each other and each had pretty much told the other he wants to have sex with the other. It had gone way past the casual flirting stage but the pretending to not know the other was interested kept going and it was very brazen. Then they would go back to being shy and nervous and unsure. I think the author thinks this is sexual tension but it’s not. It’s unclear why they hadn’t had sex yet
At 29% they openly said they wanted sex but wanted to wait until they knew each so they created this ridiculous “only after the third date” rule. But then they kiss and rub against each other and have orgasms with their pants on but they still think they’re “waiting.” It’s really annoying. This book is really long, is it going to be like this the whole time? I was hoping for a real plot.
I find it really hard to believe a billionaire doesn’t have his own staff, that he’s making “blue box” Mac and cheese and eating pop tarts. Sure that would be fun on occasion but you can’t subsist on that and still have an eight pack (which of course he has). If you have his kind of clients, and bring them to the house as he sometimes does, you needs to serve them gourmet meals. He said he almost never leaves the house so they must come to him sometimes. Face to face is necessary for good negotiating and Zoom just doesn’t cut it. He also needs to have a very well-kept house and clothing washed and dry cleaned. He would be in constant meetings, many in person. I’m not saying he would necessarily have a butler, but he would definitely have a housekeeper and probably a cook. He could not afford to take all the time off that he does.
I like that he refers to giving as his love language. It’s mine too although I have others. I don’t believe in just one. :) I think it’s a lot of men’s because unconsciously they’re showing they can provide for their mate or child or have money fit luxuries after providing. Some, like my grandpa (did), have a hard time showing their love any other way.
There were a LOT of editing issues and places that could use some tweaking. Like at one point the dragon was on his shoulder and two sentences later was asleep on his lap. All that happened between was one sentence uttered by the other man. There was a box big enough to hold clothing and company swag like cups and somehow one of them missed it in a trunk filled with small things like toaster pastries. There were quotation marks missing or periods outside them. Many times the wrong tense was used.
I’m trying to avoid nitpicks but I can’t help myself: A Michelin rated restaurant does not serve garlic knots. They cry at everything. Aaron says he’s never been in a real relationship but what about Stephen? Just because you realized later it wasn’t good and that he wasn’t in love doesn’t mean it wasn’t real. River can retire at 50 if he wants? He can retire now. He can afford the millions required to obtain a dragon. River is surprised at how rich the other guy is. Again, dragon. Even being a legacy member required membership.
I have several issues with the final chapters but I don’t want to give anything away. That section saved the book by creating conflict and tension which was well done.
Lots to love in this book. It's a world of dragons. Dragons, a protected and monitored species, are the companions of those that can afford them. The club that authorizes and monitors ownership arrange for a mentor for the new owners for the first year. Aaron is a mentor. When he meets River, his home is wrecked. River startled Charlie, his new dragon. Which led to spilt whiskey, shattered glass, and a fire scorched kitchen. Mixed in all that is a bit of blood from a foot wound and River covered in blueberry pie.
Set to not like the man before he met him, Aaron is charmed by River and finds him adorable. And sexy. River is immediately taken by sexy Aaron. Instant lust, strangers to friends to lovers, family and found family are found in this book. Aaron and River have a sweet, slow burning chemistry. And Daisy, Aaron's dragon, just loves Charlie. And both men's families are loving and intrusive.
The book has a relaxed pacing for the most part. The story climax is fast paced as well as heartrending. Love making is organic, with the pair deciding they want to get to know one another first. The worldbuilding is done excellently; this is definitely an original idea for a story.
I enjoyed the book enormously. Both men are quite well off, but don't come off as privileged. There are a lot of examples of generosity and paying it forward. There should be one or two more stories in this world. Can't wait. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the first book in the Dragon Tale series and it is a standalone. This is the first book I have read by this author and I really enjoyed it. The premise is unique and the book is well written. This is the story of River Barallo & Charlie and Aaron Gentry & Daisy. River is a very successful sports agent and spends all his time working. Leaving no time for relationships. To end that feeling of loneliness he has bought a dragon from the Dragon Club. The first day that he brought Charlie home turned into a comedy of errors. And when he was injured and covered in blueberry pie he meets Aaron. Aaron is a highly successful business who owns both a winery and a construction company. He has been assigned as River's mentor to ensure that he and Charlie learn to live together safely and happily. This is their story. I liked how Aaron was prepared to dislike River but River's honestly and kindness surprised him. Both these men were rich and has been used by someone in their past. They moved slowly towards a relationship. I enjoyed watching the relationship develop. Their strengths and weaknesses offset each other and they brought out the best in each other. I also liked that these were older MCs. People with life experiences already. The world building regarding the care of dragons was fun. The book was easy to read and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to the next book by this author.
I received a complementary advanced review copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I absolutely adore this premise. The protagonists of this very sweet romance meet when River acquires a new pet: A dragon, which in this world is an adorable approximately cat-sized little creature very few, very privileged people keep as companions. Along with this companion comes a mentor to teach River how to care for little Charlie - and Aaron might just be the piece that was missing from River's otherwise charmed and successful life.
I enjoyed the romance, the relationship between River and Aaron is cute, warm, loving, and supportive, and until the (perhaps a little unnecessary) drama at the end pleasantly low-angst. The cast of characters on the whole was great, and while I can't say I identified with or felt particularly connected to either of the protagonists - they're just too ridiculously rich, throwing around money like nobody's business, and generally inhabit a sphere so far removed from the world I reside in that it might as well be on another planet - I found both likable and was rooting for them to get their happy ending.
My only real complaint: An editor/proofreader needs to take another crack at this, looking especially at the dialogue, which was at times a little stilted and suffers from missing/misplaced punctuation a lot.

While there are dragons in this story, they're not shifters. These dragons are pets, assigned and monitored by the dragon club that both River and Aaron belong to. The two meet when Aaron comes to visit River as the club liaison helping him to acclimate and bond with his new pet. Their meet cute is hilarious, and the tension and attraction between both fairly leaps off the page.
River is such an emotional person, his feelings are so close to the surface and he did make me cry a couple of times, I was that much into the story. I loved that Aaron and River took their time getting to know each other, and finding out they wanted the same things out of life. They've both been through some things, Aaron's ex in particular sounds like a real prize. I really did love the idea of the dragons as pets too, it was something a little bit different.
This is low angst apart from one section near the end, but even that isn't too traumatic. I don't know what I expected when I picked this up, really but a low angst, warm, romantic tale wasn't it. I enjoyed it very much and will definitely look for more from this new-to-me author.
I found this book after I saw the blurb for the 2nd in the series and I was curious to see where it started. From the start I was drawn in to this story. Both River and Aaron I took to straight away. River whilst full on with his work life, his home life was lonely, which he hoped a pet dragon would fill in the gapping hole in his heart, what he didnt expect was the dragon mentor that came along. Aaron whilst came across as gruff had a heart of gold with enough love for every one. I openly laughed at the opening scene with River and Charlie in River's apartment and what a way to be introduced to River. With both you could see how much hard work they had done to get where they were but what sacrifices had they made. Their story was sweet and you do expect true love not to run smoothly but wow I did not expect that. The secondary characters were well developed and please say we will get more of Rodney, Stone and Forest. Heck even some of the others I would glad read their story. I am really interested to see how this series develops as whilst I have read a lot of dragon stories , I have not read many with actual dragons. Bring on book 2
3.5⭐️ I loved the unique premise here and it was a surprise to me how the author treated the paranormal aspect- the dragons are not what I expected. River has a dream of having a dragon, which are used in this world as a kind of support animal for the wealthy or connected legacy families. River is rich and successful but also very lonely, it was sweet how anxious he is about bonding with his new dragon Charlie. Aaron is also a dragon owner and is forced by the club to act as a mentor to River. They have a fun meeting, there’s a bit of friction between them at first, but I appreciated it didn’t continue too long. I liked the relationship between Aaron and River, they have a sweet connection and I loved their dragons Daisy and Charlie. There are quite a lot of side characters in the story which added loads of charm and personality. I’d say it does feel too long and the dialogue often reads stilted or old fashioned. Like the characters are make grand speeches and not really having a conversation. I enjoyed the characters and the dragons, I would definitely read more.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
For as long as he can remember, River has a wanted a dragon companion. Having left the family business and finding success as a sports agent, River can afford this privilege. The Dragonkin Club assigns each new owner a mentor to help them learn how to work with their dragon. Charlie is his sweet dragon and he bonds quickly after a disastrous beginning.
Aaron is the mentor assigned to River. He helps him through the bonding process, as well as the clean up from his first half hour. As River bonds with Charlie, another bond forms with Aaron and his dragon Daisy.
The concept for this story is incredible. Dragons are sentient and become great companions. River hoped Charlie would help with his loneliness, but instead found so much more with his mentor. Charlie bonded well with River and that bond was needed as the story progressed. It was amazing to watch as families meshed and families were found. It was beautiful to see and the story leaves you with a smile. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and this is my unbiased review.
So, I liked the characters and the story. And there were dragons! House pet dragons. They were completely adorable. But the writing… man, the writing SUCKED. It was very simplistic with awkward phrasing. Tense changes within a sentence. Sudden breaking the fourth wall stuff that didn’t need to happen. Sentence fragments. Sentences without a subject. Sentences that were hard to figure out what exactly they were saying. And, yes, I’ve just used sentence fragments, but I’m using them to make a point. And there was no point to the abbreviated sentences that were used. I was still enjoying it because dragons! But it all got to be too much for me and I couldn’t stand one more second. Usually I check out the ending to see how it all works out, whether I’m invested or not. I was completely invested; my emotions were involved in the characters and their stories, so I’m really sad I couldn’t continue. I really hope this author gets an editor who will tell them what needs to happen in order for the book to be readable.
This is a new to me author, as well as their debut novel and I can’t wait for more. I really enjoyed this story. Our dragons are not shifters, they are considered companions & I absolutely loved Charlie. Daisy was an absolute sweetheart, she’s Aaron’s dragon. River has finally gotten his own dragon, Charlie, and he meets Aaron who is his mentor. I wasn’t sure why Aaron had to mentor someone or be charged a fine. But it was apparent, they hit it off from the beginning. I appreciated them not jumping straight into bed but get to know each other. Things do move quickly, but it didn’t seem forced. I loved River’s huge family; everyone was very accepting and loving. I loved all the found family members as well. Both of our MC’s have huge hearts & it really shows how they take care of each other. I can’t wait to get started on the next book.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Holy cow! This read was not what I was expecting. This is the first book by Tara that I've read and I honestly enjoyed it. River has just received a dragon for a pet and Aaron has been assigned to him to show him the ropes. River has never had a long-term relationship and Aaron wasn't looking for one after the breakdown of his previous one. Though there is a sort of instant love between the two, their relationship did not feel shallow at all.
Something that I loved about River and Aaron is that they did not shy away from expressing their feelings and talking out their issues. I hate miscommunication and there was none of that with these two. They supported and encouraged each other and this even extended to each other's family as well.
I was not expecting that twist at the end! It was really well written and I could feel the emotions displayed on the pages. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
The wealthy in this world hold dragons in high esteem as cherished possessions. Aaron, a mentor in a club that regulates dragon possession, is the protagonist of the novel. Despite the mayhem they cause when they first meet, he and River form a slow-burning romance. Aaron is swayed by River's charisma, and their adventure transforms them from complete strangers to friends and eventually lovers, all while taking place in a world where dragons are pals. The love between the protagonists is shown as genuine and gradual, and the book builds to a dramatic and tragic finale. The pace is slow. Despite their luxury, the characters are shown as generous, and the worldbuilding is lauded for being innovative.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In this world, dragons are considered a prized possession owned by the rich. The story follows Aaron, who is a mentor in a club that oversees dragon ownership. When he meets River, their encounter creates chaos, but they eventually develop a slow-burning romance. Initially reluctant, Aaron is won over by River's charm, and their journey takes them from strangers to friends to lovers, all against the backdrop of a world where dragons are companions. The book's pacing is relaxed, with a climactic and heart-wrenching ending, and the love between the main characters is depicted as organic and gradual. The worldbuilding is highly praised for its originality, and the characters, despite their wealth, are portrayed as generous.
3.5 stars. I really liked this book and it gave me all the feels, however the book needs some editing. The two characters meet, sparks fly but they realise quickly that what they could have is something special. The story line is great, the characters are great, but it was difficult to read because of some weird formatting/grammer issues. Sometimes I had to double back to figure out who was saying something, or the quotation marks would end when the character hadn't finished speaking. It made it a bit frustrating to read. If this could edited for those things, then this would be a great book and a much easier to read book. If those kind of things don't bother you, then I highly recommend this book.

River wanted a dragon companion but needed someone to teach him how to care for it and bond with it. Aaron is that mentor who comes to River to help him learn what he needs to know to be a good dragon's companion. They did not initially get on like gangbusters and River was not a quick study so Aaron had to wind up spending more time with him than first thought. But it gave them time to grow on one another and to nurture a slow burn romance that led to love. The plot unfolded well and I was engaged all the way through this story and now I am looking forward to starting the next story in this series. Dragons in any story will attract my attention but a well written story will bring me back to an author over and over. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I did not know what to expect, when I started this book and was a bit surprised when the relationship developed quite fast.
This setting is sweet and romantic and essentially a big love story! The main characters are maybe a bit too spectacular because they are essentially a dream come true: both very handsome, both very successful, both very rich and both really good people. nevertheless, it did not bother me in this story because it was really well written and nicely done. it is also sometimes really nice to get so much love in a book that you can only feel good while reading it.
I loved the dragons in this book. it is a nice idea and now I want a dragon of my own!
all in all, a feel-good book, which I totally enjoyed
This story made me laugh, cry and smile. It's an amazing love story between River and Aaron.
I have never read an MM love story and wasn't sure about reading this one. But, I am incredibly happy that I did.
I don't care what your sexuality is, I believe this story should be read by all. Yes, it has a few steamy parts. But the story itself is an amazing story of finding love. Of finding family. Of finding a place to belong.
I want to thank Tara Bennett for writing such a wonderful story.
I highly recommend this story.

Some books deserve more words than I know how to give. This is one of those books. It was absolutely amazing. From the funny way they met to the amazing epilogue. I couldn't get enough of Aaron and River. Then throw in little dragons and wow!
Tara did an amazing job building this world, weaving a story so beautifully told, bringing side characters to life. I felt like I was living in this book.
The romance was super swoony. The spicy was super spicy. There was a lot of humor too. The little side romance with the dragons was adorable. I want a companion dragon now!
This book was seriously so good! Go check it out and find yourself a new author.
This was an amazing love story. Both River and Aaron had past baggage, so they were tentative with the wild chemistry they had. The pet dragons were fantastic. I want one too!!!! As things were progressing it was going well, so the author tries to tear you apart with a huge life changing twist!!! Wth!! I was really liking this new to me author! Can they recover from this?? ??Tanner was a super sweet late coming addition to the story that added more family and love to the group. What a magical melting me ending. I can't wait to continue this journey with the next book. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.
While there are some interesting elements in this story, it needs a significant amount of work still. The prose and dialogue are frequently stilted, the characters don’t feel realistic, and there are a large number of editing issues. There are continuity issues which confuse and jolt the reader. It is overwritten, which contributes to how incredibly long this book feels. The dragons were cute, although their existence is the only paranormal aspect of this story. If they were substituted with another pet/companion, it would be a MM contemporary romance.
Full disclosure: I was given an ARC of the book, however this review is my own honest opinion.
This was a fresh new type of read for me! The unique plot of successful men acquiring Dragons as companions had me all in. River is rich and lonely, and he purchases his dragon Charlie to keep help him feel less alone in the world. I laughed and smiled at how River definitely did not get dragon ownership right at all! In steps Aaron his dragon mentor, that title makes smile every time. Aaron does not expect to even like River let alone be attracted to him. For two older, worldly experienced guys they meshed together so naturally. And I have to mention that the dragons in this series are beyond adorable! I cannot wait for the next book.
I was interested as I thought the dragons were more than pets, Ie, dog sized companions. While both main characters decided to have companions due to their busy lifestyles and feeling lonely when they finally had time to themselves, I felt their introduction to eachother was certainly funny, definately a meet funny story rather than meet cute. There were funny snarky comments and actions, I liked that Aaron fairly quickly changed his attitude, he expected River to be snobby due to being rich, (despite the fact he too was rich!).
Im not sure why this book was meh to me. Perhaps the attituse to dragons????
Delightful! River, wanted a dragon companion. He was assigned Charlie with who he immediately loved. Aaron, is River's mentor ensuring he has a successful realtionship with Charlie. Aaron, was there to do a job, not catch feelings for anyone. River, also just wanted a companion to have the energy to continue his work as a sports agent. River, needs a little more mentoring and Aaron must give more time to help. The dragon companions is an interesting concept. The families are absolutely delightful and make you wonder why our guys are lonely. Nice cover art. Good story, nice flow, great characters, lotsa delightful fun. Well done. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have really mixed feelings about this book. I feel like the story was drawn out a bit and definitely could have been shorter. I struggled to finish it because I was bored in the middle. It was great to see how well they fit together and how seamless they came together. The climax of the book was in the last few chapters and wow was that a page turner but then it abruptly ended. I feel like if the major plot was shifted earlier and then the end of the book was the aftermath, I would have enjoyed it much more. I also want more of River's brothers now, but it doesn't look like they are in the rest of the series.
I am a sucker for most stories involving dragons. I enjoyed River and Aaron’s story. They may not have had the most auspicious of starts to their relationship but it doesn’t take long at all for these two to realize they have found something special. This was a new to me author and I am glad I took a chance on the book. It is worth a read. Dragons. Instant lust that quickly turns to more. Found family and large families. Finding what makes you happy.
