I like it when a story comes with a gripping setting, and this is not limited to fantasy or sci-fi (although, to be fair, world building IS a really big theme while talking about those genres). But a good mystery can benefit from a great setting, too - it brings everything to life, and it kind of can set the tone of the story (or counterbalance it where necessary). Take this Oxford mystery, for an example.
I'm mentioning this little trivia because Shannon Hamilton has seen it fit to use a setting for his crime mystery that - while not wholly original - is one of the lesser trodden roads: He takes us to Belfast.
Apparently, one should choose one's footwear carefully when in Belfast.
If you're old enough to remember why U2 wrote a song called "Sunday, Bloody Sunday", then you might have a certain picture regarding Belfast in your mind. (Alright, the bloody Sunday was in Londonderry, but the IRA retaliated with their own bloody Friday in Belfast 6 months later.) And while all this is in the past, this history of violence leaks through the pages of this novel, shading everything with a certain flair. Nicely done!
This story is, in fact, not about politics and terrorists, but about cultists - and a locked room mystery, in the truest and simplest sense of the word. And about Jacob Kincaid, police detective washout turned private eye who is hired to solve said locked room mystery. He brings a certain dry humour to the story, lightening up the mood:
All being said, I like the cast of this novel, and I liked how Belfast became almost another character in this story. The locked room mystery does have an explanation (luckily), although I feel it was a little stretched. And there is a certain Deus Ex Machina moment at the ending that I feel could have needed a different approach.
But still: delightful mystery in a well written setting. 4 gumshoes out of 5, can't wait to see if there will be a follow-up - I sincerely hope so!

Although he was being paid handsomely for the effort, it was becoming apparent that this case was nothing more than a dog chasing its tail, and he was the one barking.
All being said, I like the cast of this novel, and I liked how Belfast became almost another character in this story. Locked room murder. Say no more, I’m in. But add in a dangerous cult with rich backers and everyone who opposes them ends up dying in a freak accident or a suicide note one saw coming. I’m in it for the long haul. This had suspicions pinging all over the place, like any good who dun it. I did figure out the main tie fairly on, but it was still a really good read!
Jacob Kincaid, ex police, current PI is scraping the bottom of the barrel with the cheating spouses gigs. When a new case comes with a retainer to be his sole client, he takes it. Sue this client thinks her friend’s death is unexplained, but from every angle it looks like an accident that occurred in a completely locked and secured apartment. But he is quickly convinced when there’s been someone in his apartment, someone following him, and he was attacked in his own office. That doesn’t speak of an accident. Too bad whoever thought they were going to intimidate him didn’t know he wouldn’t back down.

This is a brilliant novel from S.D.W Hamilton. Private Investigator Jacob is bored of the usual jobs he gets and is intrigued by the latest offer that comes by his desk. A cult, a locked room murder mystery and many twists and turns are what follows in this fast paced detective thriller.
It started off a little slow but it soon got into the flow and became increasingly difficult to put down. By 70% I was on the edge of my seat unable to get to the end fast enough! There are so many reveals and twists throughout that I could never figure out what was going on until the end when it blew my mind.
This is a sharp and standout novel that I encourage you to read.

Blood-y Brilliant
This is a debut novel, yet you’d never tell.
It’s tightly plotted and brilliantly written locked room murder mystery, intercut with fantastic descriptions of Belfast city and its people. I found myself deeply invested as Kincaid gumshoes around locations I know well, painting them as vividly in prose as I know them in real life.
A recommended read and a fine addition to the expanding library of Emerald Noir.

A great page turner.

Thank you very much for the ARC copy of this detective gem! It had a been a long while since I'd dipped my toes into the gumshoe classics and it was a pleasure to read this modern, dryly humorous, homage. Cults? Check. Smart, alluring ladies? Check. A locked-room murder and a compelling detective? Check and check.
Set in Belfast, our PI Jacob has found himself going through the motions. He takes little joy from investigating cheating spouses, misses working in the force, and with a failed career and failed relationship behind him, he makes an endearingly human hero. The lonely monotony of his life is broken, however, when Natalie Amato enters his office armed with the following: a locked-room mystery murder of her friend, Roisín Dunwoody, and the cult she had been investigating beforehand, The Followers of Eden. What ensues is a twisty-turny plot which takes us across Belfast with a colourful cast of characters.
While the whole novel is a romp, for me, the highlight was the setting. Almost a character in itself, there is a loving attention to detail and melancholy to it. The writing, engaging throughout, really shines when describing the urban decay. As a huge fan of The Wire, there were moments which brought back season 2, which is about as high a compliment as I can give! Overall, a fresh and fun read.

This book might be a bit of a clunker, but it read super fast. I couldn't wait to find out who'd done it.
I couldn't put this book down, even though I did suspect one of the people involved early early on, but that might have been my extensive reading/watching of mysteries - and a little bit my pessimistic nature. But let's just say the author's good at foreshadowing and I'm good at picking it up.
I usually enjoy this kind of crime fiction with the almost noir detective, who has a shady, mysterious background - usually ex-police or military. He's a little grumpy, but has a sweet interior. Sometimes there's a sweet older lady secretary, sometimes the new younger lady that comes in is the secretary - this time we had a the older lady and the younger lady was the client. We got a nice semi-love triangle, a lot of action-packed danger, and plenty of twists and turns. While I suspected one of the people who was involved, I couldn't have guessed then entire story!
The characters were real, human beings that made mistakes and owned up to them. They apologized and they grew. The writing also imbued humor into them. This is the second time I've found a big of dark humor in a mystery series and it's definitely a trend I'm excited to see. Outside of cozy mysteries, which have a lighter feel to them, you don't see much humor. So it's nice to see a little seeping in.
I'm so grateful to the author and Love Books Tours for including me in this tour. I look forward to more adventures from Jacob, Natalie, and Helen. I enjoyed all of them and can't wait to learn more about them!

If you're a fan of gritty, noir-type mysteries, I think you'll enjoy this. It reminds me of Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway series, the Robert Galbraith books (I enjoyed them before they were politicized), and one I read last year called "You Killed My Wife," along with other similar darker/gritty feeling detectives.

Blood on the Broadcast is a classic locked room mystery (that the characters even acknowledge as a locked room mystery in a clever moment of self-awareness). At the center of the story is ex-cop turned P.I. Jacob and his not-quite-femme fatale, Natalie, who are investigating the death of one of Natalie's colleagues. I really loved their dynamic! I thought the pair brought out nice qualities in one another, and their banter was delightful! Jacob was very sensible and even cynical, but with a dry humor that gave some much needed color to the dark and grey scenes he was surrounded by in this gritty Belfast setting. And Natalie was cool and confident and unapologetic about her success as a podcaster.
And I have to say I really enjoyed the mystery itself. There were a lot of plausible suspects and a general sense of unease, so you don't really know who to trust. I love stories like this, I go into super paranoid mode and suspect literally everyone, and it was fun watching Jacob go down one alley of investigation after another. I can also say that while I had many theories as to whodunnit, none were right, and I always enjoy being surprised!

Jacob jokes that he's not starring in his own pulpy detective noir, but that's kind of how I imagined a lot of it, with the descriptions of locations. And I loved the colorful language! Fantastic debut.
Blood on the Broadcast is what you get when a 100mph thriller smashes into a locked room mystery. I don't think it would be fair to describe it as either predominately, but I also don't see the point in trying to restrict such a fun book with a label; it is what it is, and what it is, is pretty damn good.
Belfast is the setting (my hometown, although this in no way affects my opinion of the book) and the author does a wonderful job of making the reader get a real feel of the city and its past whilst also tactfully steering clear of any politically sensitive flashpoints.
The mystery is a good one, a journalist found dead in a locked room who had been investigating a religious cult. (This type of religious group has actually sprung up and grown rapidly in Northern Ireland in the last 15 years and I thought it was an interesting plot element to include)
The characters are well-drawn and fleshed out, one small criticism would be I'd like to see more of Helen, although I'm sure her backstory will be explored further in the next book.

From the mystery to be solved by a Belfast-based private detective, podcast fame, to a secret violent-if-provoked cult, Blood on the Broadcast packed it all in (plus a glossary of Irish words to help you get into the location of the book.
Private Investigator Jacob Kincaid (a former police officer) has had many failures in life, and his small PI business is just keeping him on the straight and narrow. hero. Natalie Amato, podcast entrepreneur offers him a deal: to investigate the death of friend, Roisín Dunwoody, in relation to the Followers of Eden, a very exclusive cult that Roisín was investigating. Her body was found dead inside her fortified apartment. Police were convinced it was an accident, but as Jacod dug deeper for Natalie, the intensity of the risks to investigate it grow exponentially.
There is a certain grittiness to the locations in this story, as is the escalating violence towards Jacob and occurring around him. There are a lot of layers that slowly unfold and then curl right back up again as Jacob gets closer to a potential lead. The car chase had me holding on for dear life to my kindle and couch – this is the level of intensity that @sdwhamilton has poured into these pages!

Here is my review for Blood On The Broadcast by S D W Hamilton
I got into this book straight away from the start and found it really easy to read. It was written in an easy to read style. The plotting and writing was superbly done, with the written language really beautiful. Natalie Amato goes to Private Investigator Jacob Kincaid when a colleague of hers dies. The police ruled the matter an accident but Natalie believes it is murder although the room was locked so how did the murderer do it? Jacob takes on the case although he’s not sure he will be able to prove the murder theory although strange things then begin to happen to Jacob and Natalie. Can it be a coincidence? Full of twists and turns, it will definitely keep you guessing but a very good story. I loved it.

A great debut from Northern Ireland.
This was instantly gripping, the writing just flowed so easily, I was gutted to (VERY) begrudgingly put it down for a few days in order to read a book for book club.
The setting of Belfast was well portrayed and easy to imagine for those of us (me) who haven't been there for many years since moving to the mainland.
The characters were also well drawn, I was very intrigued to find out why Jacob had had to leave the PSNI under a shadow (hopefully this will be revealed in a future book) and the psychological struggle this new life as a PI came across on the page well.
The plot around the murder of Roisin Dunwoody, part of a podcast investigating the (dubious) practices religious cult, The Followers of Eden, was very cleverly done. I think it was the most ingenious locked room mystery I have come across in my crime fiction reading. The fact that her apartment was completely enclosed, locked doors, locked attic, no safe entry/exit via the windows made this a total headscratcher for me, the solution, when shared, was genius!
All the twists and turns of Jacob's investigation, where everyone was suspected, "The Followers" became more and more sinister and the dramatic conclusion to the story meant that my appetite for the next book was definitely whetted.

I do enjoy a good locked-room mystery and I've really enjoyed reading this one, I mean it's also driven me mad for the majority of the book too. From chapter 3 I was trying to figure out how they might have killed her in a locked room, I even sat discussing it over dinner with my husband and we had various theories, most of which Jacob also had so that meant I sat trying to think of some he hadn't for a bit. I'm not going to give away any spoilers and tell you anything about how they did it but it wasn't what I expected and it was kind of a mix of some of the different ideas my husband and I had.
I loved the writing style, it kept me hooked i never read just a few pages it was always quite a few chapters and I pretty much sped-read it in a day and a half. I liked how Natalie and Jacob worked together and the chemistry they have with one another and I'm so glad that we get to see more of them and that working relationship in the next few books, I definitely will be keeping an eye out for them!

I really enjoyed this crime novel set in Belfast. Jacob Kincaid, former policeman turned Private Investigator, is hired by podcast presenter Natalie prove that the death of her friend was not an accident as the police investigation insists that it was. As the death took place in a locked room with no other methods of entry or exit, it doesn't seem that it could be anything but accidental. `Jacob will have to use every ounce of his knowledge and ability to get to the truth. This book is very well written, with plausible characters. The fact that it is centred around a podcast makes it completely relatable for today's readers. The descriptive elements easily transport the reader into the action. I also enjoyed how there is just the right amount of information is given throughout the information to make the reader want to delve deeper into the suspects and crime. Plenty of twists thrown in as well. I hope that this is just the beginning for Jacob and Natalie's partnership. They work really well together. A great read for crime readers everywhere.

I really didn't like Luke at all. I really really didn't expect that. I was totally wrong. That did throw me. I was shocked and surprised. I did like the ending. I do hope there will be another book after this. 5*.

Former NIPO police officer, now Private Investigator in Belfast, Jacob Kincaid is hired to investigate the death of a journalist podcaster. The police ruled it an accidental death, given the locked apartment and no other possible point of entry. Podcaster Natalie Amato believes her assistant was murdered, yet despite several likely suspects, there is no clear explanation as to how it could have occurred. As Jacob and Natalie investigate the discovery of various facts, a possible link to a cult and a rising body count continues to frustrate any murder theory. I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of Blood on the Broadcast, and it drew me in almost immediately. It follows the adventures of spurned policeman turned private investigator Jacob Kincaid and his client turned sidekick, Natalie Amato, as they try to get the bottom of a locked room murder that involves shady characters galore and even cults (!!). This book was highly entertaining from the start, and I was hard pressed to put it down during the last 100 pages. As an added bonus, the setting of Belfast and its surroundings was so atmospheric, I felt like I was transported there--something I love in any of type of book.
Blood on the Broadcast is a clever, witty, and expertly executed thrill ride of a crime novel that I could hardly believe was a debut. SDW Hamilton makes a name for himself as a crime author to watch and I personally can't wait wait for the next installment of the Jacob Kincaid series!

I have always appreciated a good crime drama. One where you get to really see every aspect of the investigation, the evidence, the suspects and work out the answers alongside the investigator.
Half the fun is figuring out if you’ve got the answers right. But you don’t want it to be too easy. It has to be enough to keep you guessing and this book does exactly that. The detail of the investigation is covered in just enough depth that it allows you to do some detecting yourself.
There are plenty of twists and turns and new information thrown in along the way to keep it interesting.
I found the writing style really compelling and the Northern Ireland setting provided a great backdrop to the story. The pacing is good and I found it hard to put it down.
The conclusion was clever and I liked how the scene was written where the perpetrator was outed.

I think that every crime reader loves a good locked room mystery. Well, this crime reader does anyway. I love trying to figure out how the killer manages to pull off a seemingly impossible murder and this novel really doesn’t disappoint. Jacob is a PI hired to solve this mystery with the help of his employer, the in control Natalie and a host of other characters. All the characters were very relatable and I did like Jacob although I felt sorry at how many times he was going to get beaten up.

It took me ages to read a locked room mystery, but once I had read one I was hooked, and this was one of the best that I have read, I really enjoyed it. I am also a true crime fanatic and so the fact that this included a podcaster and a PI trying to investigate a case they think has been wrongly closed really gripped my attention and held me in from the get go.
The book was well written with a compelling story line that was so gripping, and a well developed cast of characters which were all relatable and believable, I loved Natalie and Jacob and thought they made a great team.
The pacing is well done too, it is a bit slow at the beginning but when the plot tension increases it is enough to give you whiplash.
I loved this book and I think you will too, this is the authors debut novel and if this is a debut, then holy hell strap yourself in this is gonna be a whirlwind. I can't wait to read more by this author

I do love a good crime mystery story and the blurb of this book had me wanting to jump straight in. I’ll be honest, the book was a bit of a slow burner for me but once the pace picked up I found myself flicking through it page after page wanting to know more…
I really liked the setting of the book and felt that the authors descriptions of Belfast felt really authentic and brought the book to life.
The relationship between Jacob and Natalie was brilliant, they worked so well together and I loved the dark humour and banter between the two of them.
There were many suspects, questions and possible lines of enquiry which kept the reader guessing right up till the end, well it certainly did me! I am usually quite good at figuring out the plot before it unfolds but I didn’t get it with this one and loved the twists and turns!
If you enjoy true crime and a good mystery then this is definitely a book for you!

I love a good murder mystery. Throw in a locked room and what seems to be an impossible murder and I am fully on board. First of all I’d like to say on record that for a debut novel, the writing is stunning. The story is tight and I think it’s paced just right. Little bit of a slow intro to whet your appetite and then suddenly we’re up and running and now the pace has picked up and we’re all right there with Jacob trying to work out the culprit. The plot was very twisty and turny which I love and there was humour and pathos which is a massive plus point. I’ve seen other hosts mention the descriptions of Belfast and I will add my voice to that chorus. It gave the reader a real sense of the place and the story was all the richer for it. This might just be me, but I got The Commitments type vibes and that’s no bad thing, that was also an amazing book. If you love a murder mystery then grab yourself a copy of this. Highly recommended.

A Locked Room Murder, an Irish Cult, a former policeman turned private investigator teaming up with a former journalist turned mystery podcaster.......there is so much going on here it almost felt like it shouldn't work but it did & I enjoyed it so much.
I loved the setting of Belfast and the extremely descriptive writing, from the very beginning I felt like I was in the story, literally sitting in the car with Jacob seeing what he saw. I really enjoyed the relationship between Jacob and Natalie, they worked so well together, bouncing off each, complimenting each other while enjoying a brilliant banter and dark humour.
This was the perfect mystery book, so many questions, likely suspects and twists and surprises. The suspense and uneasiness the author created really makes the reader as paranoid as the characters and you won't know who to believe or trust and by the end will be on the edge of your set.

It's hard to believe this is a debut. It's quite a slick and well put together story, ostensibly a locked room type mystery but much more than that. We have the world of podcasts, a cult, a smart private investigator, some secret spook type personnel and more.
I liked Jacob from the start and when he is hired to investigate the death of a young woman in her locked apartment that the police have closed as an accident, that premise alone had me hooked. It is easy to read, and I enjoyed watching how Jacob went down every avenue of investigation only to seem to not get anywhere. I am curious to know how Jacob came to be a PI and I hope there's further books coming where we get to know Jacob a bit more.

Blood on the Broadcast is a thrilling crime mystery set in Belfast, a place where old grudges still run deep. The author does a remarkable job writing the town itself as a character worthy of the spotlight in this novel (and if you have ever been to Belfast, you totally get it). When a podcaster looking into a mysterious local cult leads to what looks like a murder, shocking revelations unravel and a perfectly suspenseful, mountain pace. And of course when our main characters, Jacob and Natalie, dig deeper it brings more questions and unrest to the pair, who will stop at nothing short of the truth. While this novel will keep you turning the page until the end, you will certainly want more of this dynamic duo! Note to readers: There is an awesome and super helpful glossary of some words that I wish I had discovered while reading the book 🤣

Wow!! This book was incredible, I couldn't put it down! There were twists and turns and action happening all over the place!! I really liked our main character Jacob, I like the fact that he really wanted to do the right thing and discover the truth. I do feel that although we had a little hint of his past life as a 'peeler' there is still more to be found out about what happened and his story.
I did however, feel so sorry for him at one point and lets be honest - it was a rough week for him!! I think the storyline was fabulous with the locked room mystery and it didn't seem possible that it was murder until suspicions were raised with further incidents. I must admit that everyone was under suspicion from me - even Natalie who hired him, as at one point it seemed as everyone was very shifty and had something to hide!
I thought that the way the story unravelled and we got to finding out what exactly had happened and more importantly how and who, was brilliant. It was a fast paced book and the chapters just flowed so well. I was really surprised when I realised that this was a debut novel as it is an absolutely brilliant one!
I am VERY pleased in reading the authors note that there will be more from Jacob!

I was looking for locked room mysteries and came across this on Booksiren, and it’s set in Northern Ireland so I gave it a try.
A murder mystery with a slight flirt with noir without being hardboiled. Private investigator Jacob Kincaid is hired to look into the death of a podcaster who was found dead inside her locked apartment shortly after running an episode on a cult, Followers of Eden.
Pretty quick read, fast pace with some action and sleuthing. Feels like a decent start to a series that might get better with time as we get to know the characters more, feels like we’ve only scratched the surface so far.

I really enjoyed this book. The pace is very good and the characters are really likeable. (Even some of the baddies!) I liked how the story unfolded and I’m now looking forward to the next instalment on Jacob and Natalie’s adventures!
(I loved that there was a glossary for the Irish words- most I knew but a few I had to look up before realising there was a glossary to help!!)
I think this will also make a brilliant audiobook with the right narrator. I’d definitely listen!
