The under 15s League competitionis under way and Hooker and Co enter into the fray with typical Glory Gardens' gusto. First class cricket is the order of the day but when it comes to the crunch can oddball Ohbert pull it off in a moment of cricketing crisis? And have Glory Gardens CC REALLY got what it takes to be the best - not just throughout the regional trials - but at. . . HEADINGLY?
What I liked about this book is that it doesn’t try to make cricket feel overly heroic. The Glory Gardens team still messes up, argues, and sometimes panics when the pressure is on. That actually made the matches more fun to read because it feels closer to how real school teams probably are.
The character that stood out to me was Ohbert. He adds a bit of unpredictability to the story and some of the funniest moments. The book also does a nice job showing how much teamwork matters in cricket, not just individual talent.
It’s definitely written for younger readers, so parts of it are a bit simple, but the match scenes are lively and easy to picture. Overall it’s a light, enjoyable cricket story — the kind of book that’s more about the team spirit and the excitement of the game than about having a complicated plot.
