Geen beter vehikel voor het inherente antimilitarisme van Cauvin dan de overmoedige menigte prominenten uit Washington die de Noordelijke vrijwilligers van het eerste uur vergezelden naar de eerste veldslag van de Burgeroorlog onder de patriotische kreet "Onto Richmond !". De precieze context levert een groot aantal realistische koppen op onder de nevenpersonages.

Este tomo es el último de la serie disponible en la página de cómics que visito de vez en cuando. Es una edición en inglés ya que ni tengo acceso a los originales franceses ni sabría leerlos.
Valga esta reseña para el conjunto de la serie que me genera sentimientos encontrados. En primer lugar amo el dibujo, en la mejor tradición franco-belga pero con una tendencia al realismo (excepto en los dos protagonistas que mantienen los rostros característicos con los que fueron dibujados por su creador original). En cuanto al guión, se trata de una visión humorística, sin llegar a los extremos de Lucky Luke, de la Guerra de Secesión Americana que resulta ambivalente. Por un lado reconozco el tono ligero y las leves tendencias antibelicistas y por otro, al tratar continuamente el tema de la guerra brutal, la estupidez de los oficiales y la enorme cantidad de bajas sin mostrar mas que escenas limpias y dinámicas de acciones, se romantiza y se pierde eficacia.
Aun así resulta una lectura entretenida y particularmente este tormo sobre Bull Run donde la sátira se hace más ácida, el dibujo más realista y la brutalidad de la guerra más evidente.

L'album qui fait le plus "documentaire" jusqu'à présent.
Parce qu'il s'appuie sur une bataille réelle et importante de la Guerre de Sécession, et sur laquelle on voit que Cauvin s'est beaucoup documenté... et ça se ressent peut-être un peu trop.
On a une succession de namedrop de personnages historiques, et d'événements véritables, mais pas tellement d'histoire impliquant nos héros pour servir de fil conducteur. Cependant, comme d'habitude, on peut compter sur les gags pour être drôles, et les personnages marrants et touchants (et je vais pas mettre une mauvaise note au tome où Blutch fait des crêpes et où Chesterfield se prend une littérale balle dans les fesses, ne comptez pas sur moi pour bouder mon plaisir, ça non).
Et puis bon, moi aussi j'ai ce défaut en tant qu'autrice : quand je fais des recherches je peux pas m'empêcher ensuite d'infodump dans ma fiction.
Bref j'ai bien aimé cette adaptation humoristique de la bataille de Bull Run.

this is a great book and unlike other books I've read in this collection, its easy to follow along with the story, its funny and interesting, I truly recommend this book if you are fan of history, comedy and comics such as lucky Luke, E.T.C.

Having recently read a novel about the same battle, this latest Bluecoats adventure had me itching to read it. It involves a look back to the very first battle of the war where, as far as the North was concerned, victory was inevitable and the whole conflict would be over in no time at all. Except, that isn’t what happened.

Of course, in terms of the story, both Blutch and Chesterfield were there, although it’s very much a scenario Chesterfield doesn’t wish to revisit. But when a new recruit asks about it, Blutch takes him to one side and tells the whole sorry tale – which we get to follow.

Making history accessible in this manner, where a fictional narrative is interwoven with dramatic events, is a great way to discover the past. And this was one extraordinary battle, so well worth exploring. From the accompanying audience who viewed the whole thing as if it was theatre to the surprising triumph of the underdogs, Bull Run didn’t nip the war in the bud. Instead, it sowed the seeds for the many future battles and skirmishes to come.

Bluecoats is so well crafted by Lambil and Cauvin that regardless of your age, country of origin, or knowledge of American history, you can’t help but enjoy it. And learn something too. The fact they’re able to inject humour without sacrificing quality is a testament to their storytelling abilities.

Très bon tome qui retrace un des premiers grands engagements de la guerre. A l'époque, tout le monde pensait que le conflit serait de courte durée, régler en deux trois batailles maximum. Cet état d'esprit est très bien rendu dans cet album qui rappelle que pour cette première bataille, les civils de Washingtown était venu assister aux combats comme on allait à l'époque à l'hippodrome ou à l'opéra : en grande tenue.



Cette bataille ne fut pas décisive, et le conflit dura près de 5 ans, préfigurant les guerres modernes à venir.



Outre cet aspect bien traité, le reste de l'album est très bon.

Bovengemiddeld album, ondanks dat het niet vernieuwend is. De burgers die de slag mee willen maken voeren echter een nieuw element toe, dat ook weer wat nieuws toevoegt aan de dynamiek tussen Blutch en Chesterfield.

A solid bluecoats entry this time dealing with the Battle of Bullrun just the right amount of humor, art work is good and even a nice little homage to Asterix.
