Astrology, Magic, and Alchemy in Art
From antiquity to the Enlightenment, astrology, magic, and alchemy were considered important tools to unravel the mysteries of nature and human destiny. As a result of the West’s exposure during the Middle Ages to the astrological beliefs of Arab philosophers and the mystical writings of late antiquity, these occult traditions became rich sources of inspiration for Western artists.

Astrological symbols decorated medieval churches and illuminated manuscripts as well as fifteenth-century Italian town halls and palaces. The transformational symbology of magic and alchemy that enlivened the work of a wide range of Renaissance artists, including Bosch, Brueghel, Dürer, and Caravaggio, found renewed expression in the visionary works of nineteenth-century artists, such as Fuseli and Blake, as well as in the creative output of the twentieth century’s Surrealists.

Atlaso tipo knyga. Į pabaigą jau nebeskaičiau, tik paveiksliukus varčiau :) Tikėjausi, kad bus mažiau temų ir mažiau paveikslų, o tie keli, kur bus, bus išsamiau išanalizuoti. Arba kad aiškinamojo teksto bus daugiau.
Aha, aš čia vėl su savo pretenzijom :D Iš esmės pradinei pažinčiai gera knyga, iliustracijos daugiausia iš Viduramžių ir Renesanso periodų, tad irgi įdomu. Tik formatas labai nepatogus - siaura ir sunki, atrodo, kad vis taikosi iš rankų išslysti.

This is part of the “Guide to Imagery” series from this publisher. Something of a “cheat sheet” for art historians to works on a particular theme. (I also have the one on food and dining.) While the astrology and alchemy sections are very solid, I must say I found the “magic” chapter extremely incoherent. It also seemed to consider any sort of pagan imagery to fall under the topic of “magic”. I also ratcheted up my skepticism several notches when I looked at the commentary on Bosch’s verion of The Marriage at Cana which has inexplicably been characterized as “Black Magic”. Whoever wrote the interpretory text is unfamiliar with the roles and paraphernalia of an early 16th century banquet, for an authoritative figure in the background holding a staff is labeled “The warlock holding the magic wand is about to cast a spell” rather than being interpreted as the marshall of the hall with his staff of authority. Similarly a smallish figure presenting a cup to the bride wears a long white sash knotted baldric-style across his torso which is described as “The sash knotted around his waist [sic] is an allusion to heresy.” A more straightforward interpretation would include the conventions of towel-wearing by hall servants that are described clearly in ettiquette manuals of the time. But I digress ....
As a resource of images for alchemy and astrology, it’s quite useful (if you toss a grain of salt over the captions). As a resource of images for magic, it’s slightly better than useless.

Interpretazioni di alcuni quadri un po' tirate per i capelli nella parte esoterica. Molti i temi non di comune dominio di cui viene data una spiegazione un po' superficiale (uomo lapis, rebis alchemico, Saturno ermetico, athanor etc).

Si tratta di uno dei libri della collana "I dizionari dell'arte", una serie che mi ha sempre affascinato perchè approfondiva i temi presenti nell'arte (dei ed eroi della tradizione classica, la musica, il cibo, l'iconografia cristiana,...) analizzando le fotografia di quadri, statue e installazioni...in una parola, bellissimi!
Purtroppo questo titolo mi ha deluso abbastanza: ci sono diverse cose interessanti, lo ammetto, però la curatrice di questo volume utilizza troppo spesso un lessico inutilmente accademico e ricercato, nominando dei concetti sicuramente noti agli addetti ai lavori ma poco chiari per chi non conosce bene la filosofia medievale o le teorie astrologiche.
Quello che emerge è un insieme di concetti di non semplice lettura (complici anche le interpretazioni di alcuni quadri che mi sono sembrate un pò troppo fantasiose e talvolta anche "stiracchiate") se non addirittura noiose...mi sono forzata per finire il libro.

I liked this book, thoughI confess I understood very little once it got into the later portion of the material covered. The photos are beautiful and if read in small bits (one section at a time), it was quite good reading.

Oggi parliamo di un libro un po' particolare.
Un libro che aspettava il suo momento da...più di un decennio.
Un manuale, o forse meglio una guida, che anche grazie all'arte, ci conduce attraverso tre argomenti che affascinano, ma di cui io, ad esempio, sapevo ben poco.
Non avendo mai letto un manuale specifico di nessuno dei tre argomenti non so se questo possa essere considerato un perfetto esempio per conoscerli, ma posso dirvi che se ciò che vi spinge è una sana curiosità può essere un buon punto di partenza.
Vengono infatti spiegati i concetti base, con definizioni chiare, oltre che dei veri e propri elenchi con le caratteristiche essenziali all'inizio di ogni elemento descritto. Gli esempi iconografici poi sono molto vari e anche qui vengono analizzati in pochi punti essenziali senza scendere in dettagli troppo tecnici. Per questo, a mio parere, può essere considerato un buon inizio per affacciarsi agli argomenti, per poi continuare il viaggio con libri più specifici. Se invece non interessa continuare ad approfondire rimane comunque una buona infarinatura.
La cosa che ho apprezzato di più è stata quella di usare opere d'arte di tutte le epoche (dal disco dello zodiaco che si trova scolpito in un tempio del 330 a.C, alle opere di Chagall, De Chirico, Duchamp o Man Ray).
Oltre questo, il fatto che sia molto semplice e diviso in punti chiari per me, che non conosco questo mondo anche se ne sono molto curiosa, può essere solo un punto positivo.
Nell'introduzione viene spiegato appunto questa scelta di "un carattere aperto dell'opera, adatto a un pubblico ampio e articolato che vuole offrire ai lettori degli esempi iconografici per avventurarsi in questo mondo ricco di scoperte impensate."
E voi, ve la sentite di intraprendere questa avventura?

Książkę traktowałbym bardziej jako podstawy czy ciekawostki, mało tekstu więcej obrazów aczkolwiek ich opisy są również krótkie .

Semi dizionario che unisce l'arte all'ambiente della magia, astrologia ed alchimia. Le schede sono troppo semplici sia per l'aspetto dell'ignoto che di quello artistico ed il formato penalizza di molto la riproduzione delle opere

This book was amazing - thorough, well researched and informative. As the title indicates, it provides a comprehensive background of the details, meanings and interpretation of astrology, magic and alchemy in art. It was so fascinating that when I finished it, I started over and read most of it again. I highly recommend it.

An incredible introduction to the highest knowledge of the ancient world, cleverly in- scripted in some of the most beautiful pieces of art of the medieval ages.

It's nice to read quickly, out of curiosity. Since I was hoping to use it in academic works, it was not really good. That's why only three stars.
