Take the fight to the enemy, only until you can’t. Then repair, regroup, rearm, and return to the fight.
Unless the enemy shows up before you’re ready.
Then you get ready.
There are no do-overs in war.
While the battle rages in space, the Borwyn decide to put boots on the ground in a daring, risk-all return to Septimus. The combat team is tasked to disrupt strategic communications.
Is it even possible?
A war fought on two fronts. Never split your forces unless you have to.
The Borwyn are coming home in the greatest confrontation yet, and the Malibor are having none of it.

I see my other lives, a career in the Marines, those damn hand-written tests in law school, a business consultant, as if they're stories from a book. I see my books as if I lived there, as if I were friends with the characters. All things we remember are behind us, only those we imagine lie before.
I'm not sure which place I prefer, but I don't have to choose. They live together in my mind. My books have some award nominations, they have bestseller tags across multiple countries. I write about justice, honor, and loyalty because that's what I care about. My stories are mostly set within worlds that haven't been, but could be. We have to be ready for when those times come.
No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. This breakthrough allows me to binge read my favorites. How many books would I have read on deployments had I not had to have a physical book with me? I paced myself so I wouldn't finish too quickly.
We aren't encumbered like that now. I love the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. I have been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, I aspire to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared me to.
Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It's all part of the give and take of life. If we didn't have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.
"We fight together. We fight for each other. And we die together."
Confrontation: A Military Space Adventure by Craig Martelle is a very well written book (book 4) in the Starship Lost series. It's a story of a determined captain and crew of a Battle Starship which their parents barely escaped a war that is considered by the Maribor over and they are the victors and the Borwyn are basically lesser humans that are the loosers. The problem with the Maribor is that they are arrogant and ruthless when it comes to the Borwyn. The Borwyn crew of the Chrysalis are the underdogs but that being the case, hasn't stopped them from bring the war back to the Maribor and though they're taking headway in turning the tide, the battle is both hard on the ship and crew. This is a story of a well defined cast of characters that will hold your interest from the first page to the last due to the loyalty of the crew to their captain and each other, thier resolve to take back their home world. Their relationships are growing with their fellow Borwyn's as well as some of their enemies, the Maribor's. Below are a few quotes by Craig Martelle from this book that I found profound and worthy of sharing: "A team is more than a group of people." "People are a reflection of those in charge. It's a hard lesson learned the hard way." "Fortune comes in different shapes and sizes." "Better preparation leads to better execution." "Hard earned is most appreciated." "We fight together. We fight for each other. And we die together." "End each day thankful for the day you had." "Was the war worth fighting if the people who helped win it, didn't come home." "When you fight, you must fight to win."
I really have enjoyed this book and thos series, can't wait until Craig releases book number five, and I hope you will enjoy it as well.
And now, let’s just ratchet up the tension a tad .. or a lot
SOOO much happens in this book! The story advances now on multiple fronts and Craig expertly plays them all with talent and proficiency!
In my review of the second book I said that Craig has a love of detail that could bore an auditor, but this is balanced by his love and study of the human character. As a result what could be boring instead becomes a compelling engagement with his characters that is less empathy and more a deep understanding.
This is on even better display in this book. Filled with the minutiae of planning battles in space and the necessary cost of and repairs from said battles, it’s the characters who truly demand your focus and attention so much that one finds oneself craving those details in order to better understand the situations with which the characters must cope.
There are some incredibly funny moments as well, most of which come at the most inappropriate moments when one might think seriousness is called for. But with an irreverence for which military personnel are famous, a fact at which Craig also pokes some fun, they come at just the time to relieve the building tension.
This book continues the two sub-lines with Jaq on board the Chrysalis and Crip and Max on planet looking for resistance forces actively fighting the enemy.
We get to see how vulnerable the Chrysalis can be when things don't go their way in the space battles. It is interesting to see how they overcome all their difficulties, but I have to admit all the technical details go right over my head. :)
As for the landing party, their first encounter with their own people are living off the land and in hiding. But there is a rumor of a resistance force actively fighting the enemy on the other side of the mountains. So even though the men had no inclination to join the landing party, they were quite willing to let some of their women go because they have too many women! Hmmmmmm...
The Chrysalis is broken. The battle was joined. The Borwyn won, but at a cost. The engines are being repaired, but the power plants are irreparably down. No spare parts. No replacement power plants. Energy is ticking down to a few percent. Life support will fail. A Malibor cruiser and gunship is headed their way. Plans are made to intercept and destroy the warcraft, but that requires power!
Meanwhile, an exploratory party has landed on Septimus to meet with any Borwyn remaining on the planet to fight the Malibor. Everything is proceeding to expectations. For a while. The best laid plans . . .
Great characters, great storyline, some amazing action and a few surprises bring spice to their plans! This is another great read in this series!
The next battle is almost all the crew thinks about. And when the Battle is Joined, Septiman helps them to achieve Victory!
These characters are compelling & the story is riveting. The Berwyn need to win in order to take their home planet, Septimus, back. Will the ship be repaired in time to keep it on track for the new battles?
So happy that I picked this Series as my Winter read. I'll be sad when it ends. Thank you Mr Martelle for another quality family to read about! Their adventures are loads of fun. Plus, this series has many options for a next series!
A starship that has to fabricate it's own parts until it can recycle them from captured enemy vessels. Luck that doesn't quite hold out. Part of the crew planetside to bring the war even closer to home. Fantastic character development and intricate plots make for a compelling read.
Martelle continues Star Ship Lost with his imagination and a writing skills. The ship is a wreck after the last battle with power at almost zero. A cruiser has entered the quadrant with a single gunship as an escort. This is a battle that the Captain really can't tackle with a damaged ship.
new adventures. the ordinary and the extraordinary
The series continues to evolve and now we get additional insights into life on Septimus! I very much enjoy the balance of big moments in battles with the everyday and ordinary slug of work. And the beauty of life.
