When her Amish grandmother passes away, Englisch police officer Jenna Shetler returns to her family’s farm on Maryland’s eastern shore to carry out her grandmother’s unusual last request. A series of letters with specific instructions forces her to seek help from Amish bachelor Abe Bontranger—and confront her teenage heartbreak. Working together brings them closer than they’ve been in years, but with Jenna’s commitment to the police force and Abe’s plans for his Amish life, is a second chance possible for the two of them?
When someone leaves a will it generally straight forward, but I loved this Amish grandma even though she's deceased. He though provoking puzzles warmed my heart.
AN UNLIKELY AMISH INHERITANCE by Jo Ann Brown is the remarkable story of Jenna Shetler, an Englisch police officer, and Abe Bontranger, a man devoted to his Amish faith, as they work together trying to decipher the weekly puzzles in Dinah Shetler’s last requests.
Jenna Rose Shetler was not raised Amish. In fact, her mother’s radio career, known as Marla in the Morning, kept them on the move, often multiple times a year. For 15 years, the constant in Jenna’s life had been her visits to her grossmammi’s farm in Sweetwater, Maryland. Then it all changed during that last year when she told Abe that she loved him. Thinking his dearest friend was joking with him he laughed. She was humiliated and left broken hearted to never came back – at least of his knowing.
Jenna become a member of the police bomb squad working alongside her K-9 partner Buddy, a German Shepherd. In a few seconds distraction, wondering if a reconciliation with her half-sister might be possible, she missed the warning signs from Buddy of the bomb in a shopping mall. It cost her some of her hearing and both Buddy and she lost a leg. While trying to figure out where her life would go moving forward, she received news of the death of Dinah, her grossmammi (grandmother). As Dinah’s kins-kind (granddaughter), Jenna had been named executor of her will. She was shocked that it would entail her living on the farm for six weeks waiting for the arrival of one letter a week with requests to be fulfilled. She also instructed that Abe might be of great assistance to her being able to accomplish the deeds at hand.
Abe, the oldest of 11, has seemed more of a parent to his siblings than their true parents, who are totally immersed in their business – Barnwood Mills, since he was about the age of the two youngest – five-year-old twins Zoe and Zeke. Dinah Shetler, old order Amish and who lived across from him, was like a grandmother to him. She had taught him much and he loved repaying her kindness with helping with chores – more so the older she got. Then two years ago he entered into a verbal agreement with the Rickaboughs, Dinah’s kin, after learning from them that Dinah had told them the farm would pass to them. All repair work & chores done on the farm were to go towards a down payment towards his purchasing the farm. When Jenna showed back up and needing help, it was sure stretching Abe. He had work to be done for his parents, work on Dinah’s farm and now this. But for Jenna, he will make time. He knew way back then what a horrible mistake he had made almost as soon as the words left his mouth. He’s hoping fulfilling Dinah’s request might bring him back the friendship he’s so missed.
Can Jenna and Abe figure out the weekly requests that are often more like a huge puzzle missing a few pieces? In the process, can they learn that forgiveness of the past enables one to have an easier present? Will Jenna be able to keep a cool head about her when dealing with the overbearing Rickaboughs? Will Abe be able to buy the farm he’s dreamed so about owning? Can Abe get over his fear of dogs, after having been bitten so badly by one, and learn to trust Buddy? Will Buddy get to where he doesn’t feel the need to guard Jenna from Abe? Is it possible that the weekly request might prove how well thought out Dinah’s plans were of what the perfect gift would be for those receiving them from her? May there have been an alterative sub-plot in what at first seemed like bizarre requests? While working together prove that the spark is still there between Jenna and Abe, how could they possible work around the fact that Abe is definitely Amish with no plans of leaving his faith and Jenna is not Amish and a police officer? Who will really end up owning the farm?
AN UNLIKELY AMISH INHERITANCE is an exceptional story of second chances, family, forgiveness, bridging differences, honor a person’s life can be as easy as fulfilling their last request, dedication, strength to survive and overcome, overcoming fear, romance and never giving up all wrapped up in a wonderful thread of faith. Jo Ann Brown managed to meld the past together with the present while paving the road for a future neither Jenna or Abe dared to dreamed of. AN UNLIKELY AMISH INHERITANCE is a FIVE STAR story that I can highly recommend to everyone!
I receive a copy of this book with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own. #AnUnlikelyAmishInheritance #JoAnnBrown #LoveInspired #InspirationalRomance
An Unlikely Amish Inheritance is a great story! It has renewed friendships, faith, and romance. It also touches on family relationships, PTSD, and even a touch of intrigue mixed in.
Abe is my absolute hero. Even with all of the responsibilities he has to deal with, Abe is always giving, kind, supportive, and ready to help. As for Jenna, she has experienced so much, and my heart went out to her completely. However, I especially loved Grossmammi Dinah, her wisdom, and the beautiful legacy she left behind.
All of this and more is why this is a definite must-read that will touch your heart.
Book Quote ...I believe God is a loving Father who watches His kinder make mistakes and is filled with joy when they learn from them so He doesn't have to weep with them when they make the same mistake again.
He's (God) listening, Jenna. Sometimes, the answer isn't what we want to hear.
This is a fun read it reminds us that even when we are dealing with a very difficult situation in our life we can still smile and find that happy time. Dealing with the death of a loved one can and most times is heartbreaking yet its possible to weed through the sadness and know that the color, beauty and love of the passing loved can provide us with all the color and beauty to make our pain less substantial. The storyline in this book is well written, the characters are developed in a way that provide us with clear view of them and let us see them in our own life, a crazy cousin, a lost love, a faithful friend, a distant sibling and most importantly a blessed grandparent. I would gladly recommend this book
When a police officer and her dog return to Amish county to discover what her grandmother left her she discovers a puzzle in the form of several letters which detail out how she's supposed to dispose of her grandmother's possessions. Unfortunately not everyone is quite as enamored with the idea of waiting several weeks to find out who inherits the farm. Thankfully there's a handsome neighbor to help sort things out - one who makes this unexpected time of living in Amish country, quite nice.
This was a fun story. I like the nature of the letters and how the story played out. I really liked the growing relationship between Jenna and Abe as he was an especially complex and interesting character. I'm glad I picked this one up.
A really good Amish story of love and second chances.

This book is delightful. Very cute storyline. A little bit mystery. A bit Amish. A bit cop story. All in one. I loved the various characters especially Dinah! Enjoyable reading for sure.
