To Coventry: A Hummingbird Murder Mystery

Rate this book
AND SHE SHALL HAVE MURDER WHEREVER SHE GOES…

The young men of Coventry are dying, violently and bloodily, and nobody seems to know why. There’s no obvious reason for their deaths, and no connection at all between the victims.

Enter demonic, immortal and bored to distraction by her new life in London. She needs a new challenge - another reason to get up from her fainting couch and grab the world by the throat. And the Coventry murders might be just what she’s looking for. A chance for her to channel her inner sleuth, dust off her fedora and, if she’s lucky - gather the suspects together for a shattering final denouement…

A pitch-dark comic-fantasy murder mystery with a light touch and a lot of anger, To Coventry takes the Hummingbird story in an unexpected direction - and brings a whole new meaning to some very old nursery rhymes…

"TO COVENTRY is an immensely enjoyable return to the universe of HUMMINGBIRD, one of my favorite books of 2022. Expertly woven elements of fantasy, horror, and social commentary all crafted in a delightful style that's simultaneously reminiscent of Terry Pratchett and completely unique, TO COVENTRY was a joy to read. Can't wait to return to this world again. Recommended for fans of Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, and fans of wicked good writing in general"
- Laurel Hightower, author of BELOW and EVERY WOMAN KNOWS THIS

"A loving homage to the detective tale, with Parker's style elevating the form to something entirely unique"
- Coy Hall, author of A SEANCE FOR WICKED KING DEATH and THE PROMISE OF PLAGUE WOLVES

"A skilfully-written, compulsive story, and I can't wait for more"

Great sequel to her fantastic book Hummingbird! A whimsical, sharp tongued, comic fantasy murder mystery that hit all the sweet spots for me. Reminded me so much of the late Sir Terry Pratchett’s work, and as a huge Pratchett fan, that’s the highest compliment I could give. 😊

I was incredibly lucky to read an early version of this book and loved every second.

Hummingbird was my favourite book of 2022. The way it was woven together, leaving the reader to compose the puzzle was exhilarating, as was the bloodshed and lore.

Onward then, To Coventry, and a tonally very different book, but one which retains some of the feeling of the mosaic novel which proceeds it. And, of course, Parker's trademark scalpel-sharp prose.

Sunny plays the role of sleuth here, every bit the Agatha Christie novel detective, albeit one who can shape shift and is millennia old. The use of her as central character-and the upfront knowledge of who and what she is, which we weren't afforded at the beginning of Hummingbird-lends the narration a somewhat more detached air, not unlike when we see cultural/political/moral references in fantasy works by the likes of Pratchett and Gaiman. And, while the violence isn't quite so liberally splattered across the page, To Coventry undoubtedly retains plenty of the rage which ran in such strong currents through its predecessor.

This book deliberately straddles multiple genres: unashamedly horrific in places, weaving in history and folklore (liberally reworked as needed by the author, as explained in the afterword,) on the template of a classic murder mystery, whose initially-reluctant detective could just as easily have stepped off of the spinning plate of the discworld. But above all of this, it's a skilfully-written, compulsive story, and I can't wait for more!

Hummingbird was my favourite book of 2022, and now we have this spin-off. I say spin-off as opposed to sequel because, for me, it was tonally rather different. To Coventry is a murder mystery, dark but humorous with a good splash of English folklore.

We follow Sunny, a defanged demigod (she can't hurt humans), who is bored. She spots some bizarre murders in the newspaper and decides to try and solve them. To Coventry!!

This is short, funny, violent, and an easy 5 stars from Parker.

(For those of you who love Terry Pratchett, stop what you're doing and buy this book now!)

Parke's prose, as always, is razor sharp, as is her social commentary, and her characterisations are multi-layered and utterly compelling. The story can't be defined under one genre, which I absolutely love - it's part English folklore/part dark humour/part horror/part cosy mystery, all delivered under the umbrella of an ancient demigod with a penchant for sleuthing ala Agatha Christie and Miss Marple.

All of this means that it's a fabulously refreshing read from an author whose command of language and the nuances involved is a delight for the senses.

An excellently constructed little story and a wonderful addition to the Hummingbird universe!

TC Parker does it again! What, you ask? Conquers another genre, that's what. To Coventry takes characters familiar from Hummingbird, a gory bloody folklore dripping novel, and puts them into a cozy, humor-filled supernatural mystery. Yes, bad things happen! But, think Glass Onion, or Murder She Wrote, or Columbo, or Midsomer Murders or any of the other quirky murder mysteries out there and add Parker's gift with telling folkloric tales and a dramatic, bored, immortal supernatural being and magic is made. And you know the other really cool thing? When your main character has lived for centuries, maybe even millennia, the history lessons are rich and intimate. I learned things in this book. The story you think you know is probably the wrong one. Isn't it interesting how myths and legends get warped through history to satisfy the current need? Join Sunny in digging deeper, to find the truth.

One might find it peculiar to describe a horror mystery involving demons, exploding brains, sexual assault, and grisly spontaneous hemorrhaging as cozy, but Sunny is peculiar sort of sleuth. Sunny, you see, is a shapeshifting demon obsessed with baking competition shows who just so happens to have an insatiable curiosity and enjoys sticking her nose in business it maybe ought not belong. Her friends know this about her, of course, and are aware that she needs a challenge to confront lest she spend her entire life binging The Great British Bake Off. They dangle before her this odd mystery of an affliction befalling a number of men in Coventry that sees them inexplicably pouring blood from their nose, ears, and eyes before falling to their death, their brains smushed to a pulp from the inside and without any apparent injury. And so, it is off to Coventry for Sunny, metaphorical fedora and trench coat donned as she adopts the guise of a private detective.

While the subject matter is grim and revolves around a 'ripped from the headlines' case that wouldn't be out of place in an episode of Special Victims Unit, author TC Parker somehow keeps the narrative itself surprisingly light and even well-humored. We get some suitably gory depictions of toxic men of the Andrew Tate variety meeting their untimely end, which is always fun in and of itself, but Parker never forces us to wade too deeply into the muck. To Coventry is ultimately about women being stalked and stripped of consent, but Parker makes judicious use of her reveals. She never goes too far, nor does she wallow in the darkness and depravity more hardboiled horror hounds would leap into. This is not the kind of book that makes one queasy or feel dirty and worse off for having been read.

The main focus, rather, is on Sunny and her, well, sunny disposition. She's an upper crust sort cut from the charming cloth of Miss Marple by way of Supernatural. Her adventuring about Coventry comes off less like Hellraiser than a hellbent Murder, She Wrote. Parker's demons are the kind that prefer sipping tea alongside a plate of digestives rather than paving the way for apocalyptic fire and brimstone. And what all Sunny knows about being a proper gumshoe comes largely from books and television. She's smartly self-aware of it, too, which allows Parker a chance to exhibit her knowledge on the breadth and depth of golden age detective fiction and its influences on eras since. I lost count of the number of times I thought about Knives Out or Murder, She Wrote, and almost as soon as one of those characters crossed my mind, boom, Sunny's all, "And here's where I got my Benoit Blanc on!" (paraphrasing, of course). And, naturally, there is one spectacularly well-timed Columbo reference for good measure that had me grinning ear to ear.

To Coventry's raison d'être may be dour and, unfortunately, ever topical, but it's also a welcome and much needed pushback against the on- and offline vitriol of toxic males for whom issues of consent and bodily autonomy are often ignored, if ever even considered at all. Thankfully, it never feels like a grim exposé, and given Parker's wit the surrounding material revolving around Sunny's investigation is often downright comical. Well-humored, fleet-footed, and beguilingly self-aware, To Coventry is just plain old fun, and Parker gives classic PI tropes a modern, supernatural upgrade.

This isn't the last we'll see of Sunny, with her next adventure in Consequential: A Hummingbird Murder Mystery on the way soon. I can only hope there's a classic locked-room caper for her to solve somewhere in the future.

N.B. I do not rate on Goodreads.

One thing I love about T.C. Parker's work is that no matter what you choose to read from her you can rest assured that you're in for a quality experience, and that's regardless of genre. This novella was a case in point, despite it being different from other work of hers I've read.
She writes with intelligence, confidence, and assurity: deservedly so.
This one contained moments of dark humour and somewhat cynical but apt references to social media (which, on occasion, made me laugh out loud), despite it being a supernatural murder mystery.
It was a very 'British' read, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible as I had no doubt other than that was what T.C. intended. I could sum it up as 'A modern day Marple or Christie with a powerful feminist slant.'
P.S. I loved the new twist on the Lady Godiva legend!

Sunny is bored with her life and as an immortal demon that’s a problem. So when she hears of the violent deaths in Coventry, young men struck down horrifically and with no obvious clues as to who the killer is, she turns detective.
The young men of Coventry are dying, violently and bloodily, and nobody seems to know why. There’s no obvious reason for their deaths, and no connection at all between the victims.

A supernatural murder mystery with gloriously dark humour that uses those old childhood stories of folklore we all loved, in a very interesting way. There is such fury in this novella but it is delivered gently and with the deductive skills of Poirot or Holmes. Sunny digs out the truth like a game of Cluedo but the weapon is a local legend. Sunny is wonderful, I love her character so much. Think a twisted Miss Marple, fragile but like a bomb!

I really enjoyed this little supernatural mystery starring our favorite neighborhood demonic goddess, Sunny, with a penchant for bloodshed and a necromancer as her newly developed conscience. She likens herself to Hercule Poirot and Jessica Fletcher and sets off to solve a murder mystery to cure her boredom. I find Sunny utterly delightful! It's always fun to be inside her head.
As per TC Parker's signature style, the writing is smart and pristine. She is obviously well-educated on a variety of subjects and tells her stories in a way that teaches the reader a few things while being entertaining and informative and not condescending. Everything about this seems very intentional; the choice of words, the choice of narrator, how much of the puzzle to give away, and when, the settings and their descriptions. This author is clearly always in control of the narrative and quite precise in the delivery.
To Coventry, like Hummingbird, switches narrators throughout. I found it really interesting to be rationed out the details by the victims themselves, as well as from acquaintances, family members, and of course Sunny, herself.
The mystery will be solved with no love lost for the murder "victims."
I chuckled many times from reading Sunny's observations through the lens of her superiority complex. Although we see some of the same characters from Hummingbird, this is a very different type of story, dare I say a cozy mystery, perhaps with a little more gore. Treat yourself and give it a read.
I received an ARC of To Coventry: A Hummingbird Murder Mystery by TC Parker. This is my honest review.

Hummingbird was one of my top books of 2022 and I was thrilled to step back into that world. To Coventry follows everyone's (well, mine at least) favourite demon Sunny as she plays detective, Jessica Fletcher style, to investigate some rather bizarre deaths.

In typical Parker style genres are thrown together in a blender, whizzed up with the resulting mixture a cosy, yet horrifying, mystery with a good dash of English folklore.
I sincerely hope to read more of Sunny’s misadventures in future.

I WANT MORE! To Coventry is a short and sweet read (by which I mean: fast, gory, and witty) that feels very satisfying, especially on the heels of Hummingbird’s [redacted to avoid spoilers] ending. Hummingbird remains one of my absolute favourite books, so another entry to its universe (and yet another coming!) was oh so welcome!

What to expect:
* As always, TC Parker’s stunning and well-crafted prose will keep you (and likely your dictionary or browser of choice) thoroughly engrossed
* A cast of interesting and varied characters, predominantly led by the enigmatic and uninterested goddess, Sunny in several of her quasi-corporeal forms
* Sunny’s history-spanning knowledge and experience, combined with her general understanding of (but disconnect from) humanity, make for a very entertaining predominant POV 👵
* An enjoyably different take on the good ole murder mystery sleuth story with several supernatural twists 👻
* Bad men you’ll love to hate 😈 (and bear witness to their untimely deaths)

TLDR: Parker never fails to deliver a good time (unless you have a weak stomach, perhaps), and To Coventry is no exception. Biting wit, interesting lore, excellent characters, supernatural twistiness, and shitty people dying 🔪💩 (Is that a trope? It should be a trope!) This is a must-read!

After reading Hummingbird, I was desperate to carry on with more & this did the job! The deaths were wonderfully gruesome but felt so deserved it made me smile enough to worry about my own mental state! The little nods to Law & Order SVU & Criminal Minds made my day too!

My only complaint is it was not long enough. I need more! Can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Highly recommend this author! 🖤

A fantastic murder mystery must read from the talented T.C Parker. This story comes after Hummingbird, although it isn't necessary to read the first, as this works perfectly well as a standalone, I would highly recommend it. Parker has such an amazingly unique writing style, you can't help but get addicted.

4 stars. I had no idea that there was more stories connected to Parker’s Hummingbird! Not sure where I’ve been but I’m glad that there is more. This was really good. I didn’t love it nearly as much as book one but it was a great continuation. It’s got dark humor and intense moments and situations and of course it’s wonderfully written. I’ll definitely be reading book three soon.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.

I absolutely loved Hummingbird when I read it last year, so I jumped at the chance to read the followup. To Coventry is a fun love letter to the detective novels of yore. Nevermind that the protagonist is a shapeshifting demon. Sunny is a great character and I hope we'll be seeing more of her in the future. 4.25 stars

Sunny is a wonderful character, so nuanced and smartly written. Here she goes the route of investigator, applying her wit to a string of murders in Coventry. It's a loving homage to the detective tale, with Parker's style elevating the form to something entirely unique. A quick, satisfying read.

What would Jessica Fletcher do? This is the question Sunny asks herself as she investigates the seemingly paranormal deaths of several young men in Coventry. Sunny is back after the crazy end to the fight against Ewart in Gallow. She is in mourning for the losses incurred there and her newest friends coax her out of her hiding place with a new paranormal mystery to keep her busy.

I went back for a second read of Hummingbird and am so glad I did, my refreshed memory of Sunny and the events in Gallow made this story so much better. This feels like a true murder mystery as Sunny tracks lead after lead trying to uncover who is responsible for the deaths. Her powers in some cases make this easier but her lack of diplomacy puts the investigation at risk at times. She tries to hide her feelings under a poised exterior but her true character always seems to endearingly peek through. To Coventry is an entertaining mix of the horror/paranormal from Parker's Hummingbird and the fast paced mystery/action of her Long Con series and I am here for it. I loved this fun novella and am hoping there are more to follow so Sunny can ask herself WWJFD again.

A fantasy murder-mystery that rides the line between funny and horrifying! Definitely shades of Terry Pratchett in this one.
