A possessive and demanding Dominant. A submissive needing to surrender….
As the world becomes more technologically advanced and dangerous, governments rush to keep their militaries at the forefront of change. Soldiers undergo genetic modifications that make them stronger, faster, smarter, and deadlier.
The downside is a genetic quirk that cannot be a need to dominate or submit in order to stay alive.
For Corporal Craig Richards, this means having a Dominant help him through his Release Cycle, a period of time when he requires sex and dominance to purge his body of toxic hormone buildup.
Commander Samuel Flak is a Dominant able to put a submissive’s needs first. That’s why he’s always in high demand for submissives entering their first cycle. But it’s getting harder not to have a submissive of his own.
A submissive who needs to submit hard outside his cycle.
As soon as he meets Craig—strong, angry, and needy as hell—Sam knows he’s found his match.
This is a full length, high heat romance featuring lots of kinky, sexy times between two powerful men who need sex to survive. Welcome to the steamy world of biological kink. HEA guaranteed!

Is there a thing as too much smut? Yes, yes there is. I officially stopped reading around the 50% mark, but skimmed and skipped my way through till the end. Not worth it.
This was 200 pages of bio kink erotica, with a little too many weird things going on for me to find this enjoyable or even a little erotic. Enlarged prostates, knotting, milking, breeding, hungry holes… the list goes on. Don’t get me started on whatever-the-fuck barbing is, ‘cause no one needs to know.
The premise could’ve been interesting with the whole futuristic setting going on, but it was overshadowed by the abundance of porn and completely forgotten once the MCs get together. The sex scenes start getting repetitive and boring after the first times, and ultimately unnecessary.
The simplistic writing didn’t really help keep my attention either. It was all ‘he does this, he does that and then this happens.’ Am I asking too much for what is essentially erotica? Probably, but I’ve read quality and well written erotica, so it isn’t unachievable.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Tropes and NSFW info (spoilers): - bio kink - Mentions of military experiments - Body modification - D/s dynamic - Daddy kink (no age-play) - Knotting - Dick size difference - Bondage - Biting
This is not biokink. I don't understand why it is recommended on every biokink request, but if that's what you're looking for...keep looking. This is omegaverse with explainer syndrome and wall-to-wall alpha/omega explain-y sex.
They’ve had this conversation multiple times. It’s honestly a little annoying at this point...
Yes, yes it is annoying! Every single thing is explained multiple times. I think I'd find a text book more interesting than this.
I can't remember the last time I was excited about the elements of a book (biokink) and this let down by it.
The execution was just not there. Incredibly repetitive, insta-Daddy kink that wasn't hot at all, biokink (supposedly D/s verse) that was basically omegaverse, long and arduous sex scenes that bored me to death, and oh my god, the explaining!
Explaining the same things over and over and over again.
In the span of a couple pages:
• All submissives are valuable enough that determining their stability and ability to be reintegrated into active military duty trumps everything, even an active mission.
• Submissives are necessary but so rare that even when they go a bit screwy,
• Submissives are rare and valuable.
Also, in case you don't know where the perineum is:
• He pauses to rub at Craig’s perineum, that sweet patch of skin between his balls and his hole, and Craig’s cock drools in response.
Insta-Daddy kink ad nauseum, Daddy was used 378 times!
The worst part about how absolutely boring this book was, is that it had things that should never ever be boring: biokink, a reinforced anus, barbing, crying, a cock cage, an altered/enlarged prostate gland, and did I mention a barbed dick?!
That was rough. I just was not fan. I think it was the writing style, but I’m honestly not completely sure. The idea was pretty cool - genetic modifications.
"Designation: Submissive" was my first novel from this author, and I'm sorry to say it did not totally work for me.
The premise and the beginning were beyond intriguing, with its dystopian-like future, where humans and soldiers in particular have been genetically modified into Dominants and Submissives: I think I've said it before, but this kind of setting, where there's a biological D/s order, is precisely my jam (seriously, if all romances had kink, I'd be a happy reader LOL), so of course I was immediately curious about this book. The two protagonists, Sam and Craig, stole my attention in those first few chapters as well: Sam, with his domineering personality, his thoughts and cynical views; and also Craig, who still managed to stay sweet, despite the horrible hand he's been dealt with.
But yeah, after those first chapters it kind of went down hill for me: this book is mainly erotica, and I have nothing against that (in fact, I love me a good steam-packed novel or novella once in a while), but the steam became repetitive after a bit, lackluster, and I don't know, it wasn't for me at all. I got a bit bored, and ended up skimming good chunks of the book.
I think I was expecting something more for this book, especially because of the way the premise sounded and the first few chapters: something more plot-dense or action-packed possibly, since it's got a distinct military setting and world-building, but that didn't happen. A shame, because the dystopian-like world was quite fascinating, and like I said, I love it when kink and plot are weaved together.
I think if you go into this book expecting precisely what it actually is, i.e. erotica, with kink (even Daddy kink!) and steam (ft. some unusual body modifications) and a whole lot of hurt/comfort, then you'd probably enjoy it much more than I did. I think it was partially my fault (and my brain's fault too; I've been in and out of reading slumps for months now), so if you find the premise of the book appealing, with its futuristic vibes, then I'd wholly recommend giving it a go.
Thank you GRR for the ARC; I received it in exchange for an honest review.
“Men like himself, who have cycles, knots, and barbs, are just part of the world. Unintended consequences of small sequences of animal DNA being integrated into human DNA to create physical advantages.”
Military genetic engineering has gone quite far in this version of Earth’s future. In order to keep up with other countries there were some questionable practices and secret projects where the enhanced men were sent on suicide missions and not expected to come back - but Craig survives kind of. He’s shot but they stick him in cryo and forget about him. When he awakes and is healed, his body immediately goes into his “heat cycle” and Dominant Sam is the one who will be taking care of him.
They’re perfectly suited for each other and bond easily. This really explores extreme submission (in an Omegaverse type of way) and the book is primarily focused on the two men going through their cycles together and how much they want to stay together permanently even though that’s not typical.
It’s an interesting concept and I enjoyed it more than I expected to based on other reviews. If you’re looking for D/s erotica with a Daddy kink this might be for you!
This was hot and erotic. In a unique world in the future, the military has adapted its soldiers to be bio engineered weapons, but as a side effect we have Dominants and submissive soldiers, with several other mutations, such as some men having knots and barbs. They go through cycles every month where they need to release to get rid of the toxic hormone buildups. Sam is a Dominant, one that has been looking for his forever submissive, the problem is, he wants someone that is very submissive all the time and most submissive men are only submissive during their cycles. Then he finds Craig, who is a submissive soldier that had been abandoned in stasis for a while. Sam is asked to help Craig with his reintegration and his first cycle. These two are made for each other. Craig is as submissive as they come and all the time. Craig is so incredibly sweet and selfless and all he wants his very own Daddy. Sam is someone that is just as selfless and caring and sweet. They are perfect together. Their heat and chemistry is off the charts. So dang good! I loved these two. It’s an amazing world building. The only downside is there isn’t much to the plot, it’s erotica with world building. I wish it had more depth but in the end I still thoroughly enjoyed it. I always love what the author writes.
I struggled with this one. Commander Sam 35 years was in charge of the new recruits training in the military. A new job with Designation Resources wanted him to join them for submissives and new doms. He's a Dom who wanted a sub for his own. This was a very different book to read with the dominants and submissives aided with enhancements and talk of cycles, which takes a bit getting used too. I got the feel of a futuristic and scientific story with the elements being told. Omegaverse knotting, biting sex scenes included. Craig was a modified submissive who'd gone through so much but now finished with his job, he wanted a dominant daddy. A first read for this author for me with this book, I read the first half of the book but started skimming after that. I wasn't feeling much with the way it was written with the werried povs narrative or telling in this. If you wanted a sexy d/s story with a different feel this may be for you.
PopSugar Reading Challenge 2024: 46.
So that...was just porn. Ah. I wasn't quite expecting that.
The premise of this is interesting: in some undetailed future, the military has turned to bioengineering as the next frontier of warfare. Of course this is a thing; Captain America and the concept of super soldiers prove that this is a thing and we would totally mess around with gene splicing and such to have the edge in combat. In this, such experimentation has an unforeseen side effect of creating genetic Doms and subs, so the military is now part brothel in managing that. Transparent kink excuse, but I can come along with it if it's done well.
This is not done well. This is barely done. The plot, such as it is, has holes large enough for a whole fleet to drive through, and I have no idea what the point of a sub is in this universe other than to satisfy a Dominant. The entire character of Craig is a Gary Stu for Sexy Times and we keep hearing about how well he served as a soldier, but doing what? He has less depth than a piece of paper, and kudos to Sam for not being a dick but the entirety of their interactions is "let me sex you yes please." we're told that the military doesn't do bonded couples but then it does, and there was bad experimentation in the Before Times but who knows how long ago that was, and there's prejudice against submissives until there's not, and really this is just a jumbled mess of disconnected plot threads that don't build any kind of actual story at all. Hand wave, have more sex, everything's fine.
There's also a Daddy component but in name only; I'm not sure whether Kassel doesn't know the breadth of Domming or thinks Daddy Doms are just caretakers or what, but it always felt really weird to hear "Daddy" thrown into this hash.
Robert is an interesting side character who shines purely because he has one (1) personality trait, which is more than the other characters. This was such a missed opportunity where the spice (which isn't that spicy, actually) completely overwhelmed the meal, burning both my tongue and any desire to keep reading this series.
This was an unusual book with an interesting world of genetically engineered soldiers who are mostly dominant, but some submissive and a few “null”, or neither. It reminded me a lot of Alphas and omegas and heats, but with a twist. Sam is a Dominant and is often used with submissive soldiers entering their first “cycle”, a time when sex is required as a reset mechanism (think heat) to enable them to return to duty. Quite a world was created based on the genetic engineering and types of “modifications” made to submissives especially, although it sounds like Craig was more of an extreme experiment than the norm. Sam has been wanting a submissive of his own, rather than servicing ones in their cycle, but has not found anyone who will fit what he is looking for. Then he is called to see Craig, listed as a submissive from his file, to take through his cycle when he comes out of what is basically suspended animation for several years, found at an abandoned military experimental lab. Something about Craig speaks to Sam, and he wants this man. As they get to know each other over the course of their cycles, something clicks. Do they want the same thing? Can both of their physical and emotional needs be met? Will Craig finally get what he was promised all those years ago? An erotic mystery with lots of steamy times as two men dare to reach for what their hearts have yearned for all along. Great characters, an interesting, though sometimes confusing world, and a look into the psyche of a dominant and a submissive. Looking forward to book two when a side character from this book has gone missing, and we will hopefully run into Sam and Craig again as well as find Robert rescued.
I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
DESIGNATION: SUBMISSIVE is the first book in The Designation series, and is told in first person, present tense. This isn't my favourite way to read, but I was intrigued enough by the story to try it.
The premise of this story is a good one - it's a dystopian or post-apocalyptic scenario where men have been genetically altered and have become either dominant or submissive (on an individual scale). They can bond, but it is rare. Plus, the military doesn't like it as it's money down the drain. The military also finds other centres where men have been altered and cryogenically frozen. This is where Craig comes in. Sam is the dominant soldier who has been looking for a submissive who will submit all the time, in every way. Craig has been promised a dominant of his very own but was then sent on a one-way mission.
This book is high on steam if not downright erotica. I don't have an issue with that. The parts that got me were when Sam and Craig would get 'busy' but then Craig would go off on a two-page internal monologue. I'm sorry, but if it's that good, then you won't have coherent thoughts! I would also have liked a little more world- and character-building apart from the s3x side of things.
Saying that, I did enjoy it and am intrigued to know what has happened to Robert, so I will be continuing with the series. ** same worded review will appear elsewhere **
* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book; the comments here are my honest opinion. * Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books! Dec 11, 2023
This world has some potential. If you are going to genetically alter people to become super soldiers, there are going to be some side effects. But given the infinite array of human personality, there is no way any 2 people will turnout the same. Then add in that one of the changes is a D/s proclivity, and who knows how it will all work.
Of course, to get to the accepted status of soldiers described in the book, there had to be others that were first, that were tests, so cue MC 1, Corporal Craig Richards. He's been on ice for a few decades, was gravely wounded, and was maybe not the type of person who would be selected to undergo modification in today's world.
The soldiers go through cycles, kind of like an A/o dynamic, where there is a hormonal need to act as their designation. And since Craig reads that he is coming up on his cycle as he wakes, cue MC 2, Commander Samuel Flak. He's been called before to help submissives through their cycles, but he really is looking for something more permanent.
This book is short on scenes and activities outside Craig and Samuel getting together and working through their cycles. But there is a lot to unpack in the dynamics of these groups working together, some people being stronger dominates, some more aggressive, submissives who only are in their cycles, auras or energy that can be felt by others.... and the list goes on. Add into all that, these people are soldiers and have to deal with a lot of extremes, you can get a lot into a book.
Independent reviewer for GRR, I was gifted my copy of this book.
I'm not really sure what I feel about this book, to be honest but I will try to explain.
I liked the blurb, it grabbed me so that's why I read it, and the blurb fits the book well.
I did found this book to have a lot of *noise* for want of a better word. Both Criag and Sam go off on pages and pages of internal monologues and it made for distracting reading, especially when that monologue lands slap bang in the middle of the smexy times!
And there are a LOT of smexy times. I'm not ashamed to say I ove my books on the steamier side, but I like some STORY too.
I mean, very quickly, you know what is going to happen: it's all laid out for you. And...........................that's it!
More world and character building would have been nice, but in a much less instructional way, you know? I almost felt I was being told to listen and take in all in, all in one go, and I really don't like that.
I've not tagged it as romancce, because, to be honest, I didn't get it. Sam wanted and sub and Craig wanted his own Dominant and they get that.
What I do want to know, though, is what happened to Robert, a side character who has disappeared. Now, there is a second book that tells us, and I really REALLY want to read that. Robert is a Dominant with some extra skills that Sam does not have.
Kassel has a large back catalogue. I've not read any of their work before. I might go pick a random one and read something else.
I’m not giving stars as I hardly know what to say.
I didn’t finish it. Made it about halfway.
I like the premise in that it’s about genetically modified people in the future—cool cool.
But I think, and I can’t 100% tell that the submissive one was modified underage? And that those modifications were for future sex purposes? If I’m wrong PLEASE correct me. I want to be wrong very badly. Or maybe that part was an inadvertent side effect? Idk
So anyway, genetically modified humans for the purpose of becoming super soldiers. Most end up becomes Doms as a side effect, but some are subs. That part was interesting and I think if it was going to be a military thriller that would be cool. It wasn’t. It was erotica. The rest of the book after the first set up chapters was just erotica.
And it needs more warnings or a kink list in the front. Off the top of my memory which I may never get rid of are:
Genitalia size difference (discussed a lot as small, cute, etc) Knotting with extras (no spoilers I guess) Medical kink? I think I would call it that Breeding Chemical and physical denial Praise Daddy without age play Body modification for the purpose of sex
I have never written a review like this. No I will not be reading more by this author. Recommended a very long trigger/kink list up front.
I received an ARC of this and this is my honest review.
The world has advanced and governments have genetically modified soldiers to make them stronger, faster, smarter and deadlier. The downside is that they are then made into either and dominant or a submissive in an alpha/omega format where there can be knotting but no mpreg. Corporal Craig Richard is a submissive and he needs a dominant to take him through his Release Cycle and purge him of toxic hormones. Dominant Commander Samuel Flak is experienced and able to put the submissive's needs first so can handle a first-ever cycle but he dreams of having a submissive of his own permanently who needs to submit hard outside his cycle. As soon as he meets Craig Sam knows he’s found his match.
This was an interesting concept and I liked the thought that in designing the genetic mutations needed to make soldiers better they had damaged them into the dominant/submissive society that needed intense sex to purge their toxic hormones. I felt very sorry for Craig who was quite damaged and pitiful but was heartened that standards had improved since his conversion. I enjoyed their relationship and that Sam did everything that he could to care for and protect Craig. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content in a BDSM-like D/s dynamic set in an Omegaverse-type world.
Would leave kudos and a *fans self* comment on AO3 for this. Asking for money is taking it a little far though.
This is straight outta fandom and had me cackling in delight. It takes demented fan!girl energy to be like "This BDSM AU needs more a/b/o influences. Let's add mating, knotting, pseudo heat aaaaand oh yeah, barbing!?!"
The result is 212 pages of porn with maybe like a smidgen of plot. You will need to take breaks. You will absolutely enjoy the heck out of it if you're willing to just go on the ride. This reads like Original Fic in the best way. Join the ride, don't worry about things making sense and just have a horny good time.
That would be my AO3 review. Since the author is taking money for it, here's what I would say for paying customers: Don't.
There is no reason to pay for mediocre porn without plot about characters you don't know and care about when AO3 exists. The author did not pay to have this professionally edited, put very little actual thought into the trope mashup and frankly needed to add A LOT more plot for the transition.
Fanfic or Original fic is not ready for primetime no matter how many comments tell you otherwise. Respect your paying customers and pay a professional to edit your stuff. I had a good time with this and yet I am still never buying another Jamie Kassel book after this.

Commander Samuel Flak needs the kind of submissive that Corporal Craig Richards turns out to be. But the world in which they live is no longer the one that Craig knows, and Sam must take him not only through his cycle but also help him as much as he can to adapt to his new life. The premise surrounding dominance and submission was intriguing, given that it is couched as a biological imperative enhanceable by scientific intervention. So the story gives a fantastic sci-fi feeling. In this regard, it is truly speculative fiction. However, "story" is a bit of a stretch to describe what happens in the book. There's very little plot or character development, and most of what happens revolves around Sam and Craig getting off in D/s fashion. It leans very heavily toward erotica rather than romance unless you're willing to accept their instant connection as romantic. As erotica, it's fine I suppose, but I wanted and expected romance and didn't feel it. Sam's integrity and compassion in the face of Craig's understandable fear and confusion are what made me round this up to 3 stars.
A new concept for a world with dominant and submissive soldiers in a world of gene manipulation and alteration. Faintly reminiscent of omegaverse, the submissives and dominants go into a cycle of heat and get a few days off to get it out of their system. So lots of sex involved. In this book, a dominant with good control is offered a submissive who had been cryogentically frozen for a long time (decades) and had joined the forces and been changed when the laws didn't protect submissives very well. Now that he has woken up and goes straight into a cycle he needs someone to take care of him. There is a fair bit of daddy talk with it feeling more like a soft Dom Daddy. Our dominant wants to keep the submissive and the submissive wants to be kept, but has been lied to a lot in the past and has grave doubts whether he will get what he wants. A large part of the book is taken up with their inner worries about whether or not they get what they want or are good enough. I am intrigued enough to want to read the next one which is about a Null, meaning a person who doesn't seriously appear one way or the other and can keep their leanings hidden or let them out. HEA in this one.
Okay so I went into this book with high hopes because who doesn’t love the highest of high heat? But I really had trouble getting past the omega feeling like a child. He was entered into the experiment at 14 or something like that, we aren’t told, before sox happens, how long he was experimented on, but we are told that he was put into stasis at some point after experiments started. Sure it’s possible he was experimented on and tortured for 4 years, but that’s a long time and my brain isn’t confident bro isn’t still a baby teen). We also know that he opted to keep his paynis child-sized for maximum alpha pleasure (???). The focus on the attractiveness of his itty bitty paynis, that wasn’t shrunken, but maintained small from childhood, was uncomfortable for me. As far as I’m concerned, Alpha has gone his whole life without finding a mate, but is helplessly drawn to person who is of age now, but was put into stasis as a child (and thus is a child mentally) with child-sized soxual organs…
Maybe age is a focus later, but I couldn’t get past all the sleep-fondling of a maybe-child to find out.
First, the focus on the dynamic between Craig and Sam, and the way it was probably more than 75% of the story, was amazing. Because it was beautifully done. There was constant build-up, that never felt unnecessarily drawn out, followed by scorching hot smexy-scenes that were both sizzling and tender.
But the world-building was the second thing that stood out. Despite the relatively small part of the story that was devoted to world-building, it was a completely fresh take on D/s dynamics, and it made all the difference! And I found it all to be a very enjoyable and interesting premise. Like a mash-up between omegaverse and regular old contemporary D/S.
I highly recommend it to all of the MM smut lovers out there who'd like some variety.
It's the first time I read anything by this author but I'll be sure to check out Kassel's backlist for sure, and I'd love for it to be a sequel, preferably with a new couple.
In a world where men are genetically enhanced for the military, a genetic cold war has caused most of them to become quite Dominant. The DNA changes have caused cycles and the need for many of them to spend a few days with a submissive to recover from toxic buildup in their systems. When a rare, very submissive is found in cryo-storage with untreated gunshot wounds, the Dominant called in to help care for him finds the rare partner his unusual dominance needs.
Commander Samuel Flak knows how to treat his partner well, but finally finding someone whose needs match his own drives him into overdrive. However, he still takes Craig's wishes into account, to the point where Craig fears that he still won't get the person he was promised when he threw away his freedom for an experimental program. Getting all the kinks worked out without allowing the military to intervene takes them some finagling, but the whole story of their relationship is HOT!
I could not put this story down. Thank you to Gay Romance Reviews for my eARC.
This started well, with lots of details about the new world of genetically modified soldiers, but then (and I can't believe I'm saying this) it just devolved into too much sex. The majority of the story was Sam and Craig together for their cycles, with lots of sex and lots of introspection from both of them. Craig was very sweet and I felt for him, the military having done a number on him years earlier, now awaking after being in stasis for years to different times and an uncertain future. Sam was exactly who Craig needed but it was frustrating watching them mentally circling each other without making it clear how they felt and what they wanted. The sex between them took up the majority of the book and whilst I love a sex scene as much as the next MM romance reader, I would have liked more characterisation, more world-building, and more of Robert who proved a good friend to both Sam and Craig. Robert's book is next and I want to read that, hoping that his story is a lot less sex and a lot more character.
The whole concept of Dom/Sub in the context of this book was a new experience for me, but it did read strange honestly. There was a lot of what came across as over explanations in terms of the D/S dynamics and all the sexual desires that came with Sam and Craig's designations, so idk, I just couldn't help but roll my eyes at the plot of it all. I couldn't take it too seriously.
Overall though, as an erotica it's okay. Medium to high steam, I loved how needy Craig was and how much satisfaction he got from completely surrendering to his Dom. Though it just felt somewhat tiring to enjoy their dynamic because I felt things were explained way too much, but I also understand why given the context of Craig being unfamiliar with the current world.
Anyway, it was interesting reading Jamie's new take on the Dom/Sub (which also read like a Alpha/Omega) dynamic but I can't say I'm interested in reading more in the series.
I loved parts of this book and I was left wanting by others. Jamie Kassel has written a future where in trying to create better soldiers they ended up with lots of Doms and fewer subs. There are some details about how all of the was done with genetic manipulation etc and some about how things are better now than before but I can’t help wishing that there was more plot and less relationship. We learn a bit about Sam and Craig but mostly in relation to their sub/Dom type. It’s a fascinating take on what might happen to the military if things keep going further and further. It reminded me a bit of The Handmaid’s Tale in that way but with more fun times. Way more fun times. If you don’t like reading about fun times between two men then this book is not for you. If you do like reading about that then enjoy.
For me, this is a book in two parts. The first is the story of Sam and Craig, two soldiers living in a world of man-made Dominants and Submissives. It’s a world where Dominants need to dominate or they go mad, have inhuman dicks with knots and barbs, and are genetically engineered for aggression and physical prowess. It’s also a world with a lot of rape. While some of it may be framed as consensual non-consent, given the biological component, I can’t see how the Submissives are actually able to consent in any aspect.
The plot of Sam and Craig coming together and finding love didn’t do it for me.
I love Jamie's books. I want start my review saying that some people said that there is not enough back story/ workd building what my answer to this is that it has the right amount. I feel if it had more it would have been tedious. It had the right amount back story/world building for you to understand the world and the behaviors of the mcs. It's a n interesting concept of D/s take on almost like an omegarverse but with those dynamics on top. Jamie doesn't fail to convey all the emotions. I got sucked in the story and felt what the characters were feeling. It was lovely. From start to finish absolutely loved the story, the relationship the neediness between the characters and the D/s roles and the spicy scenes were top notch.
