Rise of the Ruthless
Ren Ikeda’s world is falling apart. War has broken out in the streets of Lucifer’s Landing, and his entire empire is being dismantled one explosion at a time. Mykel’s head tilted to the side, so I knew he’d heard me. “You said you’d tell me what that meant.”
“I did. Come here.”
He hung his head for a beat, then turned and gently sat beside me. “What’s it mean, Ren?”
“It means, my love. It’s my way of saying I love you, Mykel.”
Wonder, surprise, happiness, fear. All those emotions flashed across Mykel’s face until a small smile took precedence. “I thought you were dead. I didn’t know if I’d be coming back here to your corpse, and I didn’t like how that felt.” He took my hand in his. Scrapes, dirt, and dried blood against my clean, ivory skin.
“You hated me once.” I chuckled, happy to hear him laugh with me.
“Even knowing I hated you once guts me.” His eyes shone as if he were desperately holding tears at bay. “I love you too, Ren.”
“Maybe you can come closer and seal that declaration with a kiss.”
“I’m dirty.”
“I like you dirty.”

It was very engaging. I wish Ren and Mykel had had the chance to get more emotional connection, as it would have made the climax of the book more potent, but otherwise I really did like it.

Loved being back in Lucifer’s Landing
Ren’s position in Lucifer’s Landing has been severely weakened and another mob boss is attempting to take all that Ren and his family have worked for. Circumstances have Mykel entering into the mix and the world of mobsters, a world that Mykel despises. Amongst all the chaos surrounding them with villains being villains these two wonderful characters manage to find themselves igniting the sizzling chemistry between them falling in love.
This was a very enjoyable and engaging read with plenty of action and drama, a steamy romance and an amazing dog called Zeus. There’s also plenty of obstacles to overcome as Ren and Mykel fight for a hard earned HEA.

a terrific romance that’s surrounded by a problematic plot

In the sequel to War of the Wicked, I both found a lively entertainment experience but also a much less realistic story, one that’s has quite a few issues . The first novel, with its more complex violent crime plot, didn’t contain these elements .
The first issue starts with the main character of Ren Ikeda, the Japanese crime boss. Where the Italian mob family of Dante Scavo felt grounded in their culture and deep rooted belief systems, including language, the Ikeda’s Japanese culture and community here is barely existent or explored. The language appears in a couple of phrases that get dropped in a couple of times, instead of as a language that the characters use them freely and without thought. Japan’s culture or the yakuza (if that’s what King is aiming for) criminal tradition, any observance of honor is fleeting and not put into context. We are “told” Ren Ikeda’s family and business is that of an insulated Japanese society, right down to his houses. But there’s never any reason to believe this is true. Other than koi pond and some decoration.
This entire element is poorly written, which is a shame as Ren is an interesting character.
Ren can, at times , come across as a crime boss, but he doesn’t have the same strength as Dante Scavo. That’s on purpose, of course. His is supposed to be a subtle sort of “scary power” but it’s not as translatable here.
That’s left to ex military security guy, Mykel Finlay, and his scary guard dog, the cane corso, Zeus. Those two are the most dangerous creatures in this narrative. Not the mob boss. Which is part of the problem here,and causes some of the best and most unrealistic elements within the book.
Best of Mykel. His developing relationship with Ren. King gives them really great chemistry and a compelling dynamic as Mykel has to wrestle with his honor system as his loyalties start to transfer to a mobster, with all that entails. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow. Best of this book.
Most problematic. Other than the Japanese culture aspect is how erratic King’s implementation of Mykel’s security/military company support system is. It’s so irregular as to come across as slapdash.
Mykel is part of a security company made up of ex military personnel, with access to extraordinary weapons (even helicopters) and their personal are equipped with special equipment. Mykel’s cane corso, Zeus, a special guardian breed dog used for military/ security measures , is a huge character here. He factors into many action scenes. However , he never wears special identification, not the halter nor vests which in battle/fights id him as part of a team, nor is there any mention of a special permit for him or anyone needing extra paperwork for any activities Zeus has done. That seems unlikely.
Again with Mykel , there’s a hugely significant scenario with a planned raid. What’s missing? Bulletproof vests. From both a organized crime and black ops standpoint, that’s unacceptable.
King’s story has her characters portrayed as significantly competent, highly skilled ex military or assassins yet over and over in the narrative, odd or arbitrary storytelling choices are made that counteract that.
Then there’s things like a brother who is the cause of Mykel’s involvement initially and who appears to be a perpetual screwup. He disappeared except for a brief mention towards the end of the book.
So Rise of the Ruthless (Lucifer's Landing #2) by Davidson King has a terrific romance that’s surrounded by a problematic plot.
Read it to complete the series and for fans of the author.

Has it really been a whole year since we were first introduced to Lucifer's Landing? Doesn't seem possible, perhaps that's just me because when a book is as rich and thrilling as War of the Wicked was it never truly leaves my psyche.
When an author begins a new series, no matter how much I love the author's works to that point, there is always a layer of "can the author really knock another one out of the park?" Lets face it, even the greatest authors of all time have been known to put out a clunker or 2 and be it next year or 20 years from now, the day will come when King has a slightly less than stellar release . . .
BUT TODAY IS NOT THAT DAY!
Rise of the Ruthless is the exact opposite of clunker.
I'll admit I don't think I can say Ruthless topped Wicked but honestly that comes down to Wicked being the first. The first is 99.999% of the time always my favorite. Though Ren and Mykel definitely give Dante and Rainn a heated race for that notch in my heart representing Lucifer's Landing. Does their pairing meet the "opposites attract" label? That's a toss up. Yes they are definitely opposites in the "where my moral line in the sand sits" column(at least in the beginning) but their passion to protect loved ones and family is very much in the "equals" category. The column I put them in is what I like to call "Snark and Cuddle". They each give as good as they get, they can match snark for snark but they can both cuddle till their hearts explode from the emotional chemistry. There is absolutely nothing I didn't like about them.
I can't forget Zeus. How anyone could forget such a protective beast that can be both ferocious and gentle is unfathomable to me. Animals often play a variety of roles in a story but I don't think I've ever loved one so dearly that they truly are their own character. If Davidson King were to write a bonus chapter from Zeus' POV I would be first in line to gobble it up.
Now I won't touch on the mystery side of the story as I don't want to spoil anything for either Ruthless or Wicked for those who haven't visited Lucifer's Landing yet. I will say that there might not be quite as many twists and turns as in Wicked but Ruthless still keeps you on your toes from page one. There is never a dull moment for the characters or the reader.
The passion and chemistry between not only Ren and Mykel but Ren and Dante's friendship is equally powerful(for different reasons but I still label it passionate chemistry). I always find an extra special connection to stories and characters when there is more than just the romantic chemistry involved in the book which makes for an all encompassing storytelling experience.
It took me a few days to read the story and I wish I could say I did that on purpose to savor the King yumminess but it was time that dictated my reading clock. Had time been on my side, I could easily have read this in one setting and then kicked myself for not savoring it, that's just how engrossing this entry is. However you choose to set your reading pace, I highly recommend giving Lucifer's Landing a visit, if you haven't dipped your toe in yet you really should start with War of the Wicked because even though Rise of the Ruthless revolves around a different pairing there is an ongoing storyline.

This is not a standalone - if you haven't read it, jump right into book one...you won't regret it!
Well, we're back in Lucifer's Landing in the aftermath of the strike on the Italian and Japanese Families and war is amongst us. Ren Ikeda’s forces are depleted and, to cap it all off, there's a problem with the rebuilding of his home. In getting to the bottom of the problem he's introduced to Mykel Finlay, a security specialist. This is a handy coincidence, as I said…depleted forces. So, the mob boss draws Mykel I to his world as his close protection, which throws the former military and ex-police officer for a loop as his moral compass points due north. The chemistry between Ren and Mykel is immediate, even as they irritate each other initially. Being in close quarters, though, provides too much temptation and their relationship begins to grow.
I really like the continued world building here, and I'm definitely a sucker for a bad boy sorting out the detritus in the city's seedy underbelly. The overarching plot development works for me, too, as we see where allegiances truly lie in the war between the five Families. I'm also here for the mob boss bringing the ‘good guy’ to the dark side. So much to like!
As for the main characters, we know a bit of Ren's honourable and loyal but also coldly brutal nature from book one. Here, we see all of those traits up close as well as seeing the softer side of his personality. I really like Mykel as a character and if there's one thing that stops this being a 5-star read for me, it's that I'd like more of Mykel’s backstory to give the most well-rounded view possible of his internal struggle with the moral dilemma of protecting and then falling for a mobster. However, he does have the amazing Zeus, his cane corso dog/work partner…brilliant!
Overall, the return to Lucifer's Landing is a thoroughly entertaining action packed opposites attract/forced proximity story. There's heat between the MCs, but it's not the focal point of the relationship development - there's also a bit of a low-key power struggle as they're both very alpha male in their own ways. Aside from Mykel and Ren getting their HEA and things progressing in the mob war, there may be a hint of who'll be front and centre in the next installment. I can't wait to find out…fingers crossed! 4*

When I read War Of The Wicked (the first book in this series), I was really hoping Ren would get his own story, and he did!! I was so excited that he got his own book, I was so curious about his character after the first book and I'm glad that we could learn more about him and the way he handles his business/family.
Ren in comparison to the way Dante handles things is very different, in a good way! I like how different the way they handle things are, and how... Ren exudes one 'face' but still has feelings and insecurities under his Stony persona. His relationship with Mykel was.. interesting, they both wanted to be the one in charge but eventually he deferred to Mykel. I loved Zeus, his character brought so much cuteness to the story and he was so fierce and protective I loved that he was such a strong component of this story. The bond him and Mykel have with each other is so sweet! The action scenes were done really well, each character that came about in this story had their own part to play in not only moving the story along, but by also adding more intrigued, drama, betrayal, and pure chaos.
I said this about the first book, and I'll say it about this one as well, the romance between the two characters isn't the main focus of this story. While there are steamy scenes, there isn't that much as far as those tender moments of the MC's building a relationship or much for romance... Which I think really works for this type of story, I liked how this was written and quite enjoyed it. I'm so excited to see what happens next and who's story we'll get to know next! I'm hoping it'll be Giovanni's!

Ren and Mykel
I was so excited when I learned War of the Wicked wasn't a standalone and Ren was going to get his story. The book starts off with Ren down in power and manpower, but he uses his keen mind and recruits Mykel as his bodyguard, and then starts to build alliances. Ren is ruthless in his desire to bring the war in Lucifer's Landing to an end, and only he knows the secret to his motivation. He has to decide whether he can trust Mykel with his secret, and with his heart. None of which will matter if he and Mykel can't survive the coming battle. Mykel isn't a part of Ren's world at all, but he soon finds himself tied to Ren heart and soul, and will do anything to keep Ren alive. And Mykel has an ace up his sleeve that just may save them. Davidson King is one of the few authors that keeps me glued to the pages of her books from start to finish. I love her world building and her characters. I resoundingly recommend Rise of the Ruthless and also War of the Wicked if you haven't read it.
I was so excited when I learned War of the Wicked wasn't a standalone and Ren was going to get his story. The book starts off with Ren down in power and manpower, but he uses his keen mind and recruits Mykel as his bodyguard, and then starts to build alliances. Ren is ruthless in his desire to bring the war in Lucifer's Landing to an end, and only he knows the secret to his motivation. He has to decide whether he can trust Mykel with his secret, and with his heart. None of which will matter if he and Mykel can't survive the coming battle. Mykel isn't a part of Ren's world at all, but he soon finds himself tied to Ren heart and soul, and will do anything to keep Ren alive. And Mykel has an ace up his sleeve that just may save them. Welcome back to Lucifer’s Landing! Rise of the Ruthless is the second book in the amazing Lucifer's Landing series. This series should be read in order.
I was eager to read Ren's story and boy was I not disappointed.
There is plenty of action, romance and all the feels you could wish for in this story. Ren's power in Lucifer's Landing has been severely weakened, and another mob boss is attempting to take everything that Ren and his family have worked for.
Circumstances have Mykel,former military and police, entering into the mix and the world of mobsters, a world he despises. He now works in protection and is charged with providing security for Ren. He is determined to do his job, all the while trying to resist his attraction to Ren.
This was a very enjoyable and engaging read, with plenty of action and drama, a steamy romance, and an amazing dog named Zeus. There are also plenty of obstacles to overcome as Ren and Mykel fight for their hard-earned success.

Make a great team and with Zeus by there side they can claim what is rightly theirs. Ren has always only wanted peace in Lucifer's Landing but with all the other mob families moving in they all wanted more. Holy eff. Davidson hit this one out of the park and across the ocean. I loved it. I'm so excited to be in this world she's developed and become immersed in the stories. My usual disclaimer - it's not a standalone, so you need to read the first book in the series. From the fantastic worldbuilding, stellar prose and beautifully developed main and side characters, this book has it all for me. Mykel and Ren are hot couple from the get-go. This story grabbed me from page one and didn't let go of me even after I finished this one. If you like dark mafia romance, that included hot sexy times and action-packed adventures, then this is the book and series for you. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I'm excited to see the next couple pairing. So, with that said, RUN to your favorite eBook purchasing site and grab this one up.

A whole lot of mafia world building and action had in this one! This is definitely a series where the characters and situations continue from book to book. We are getting to know Ren in this one. He is the tough Japanese mafia leader, but now he is in a jam. He needs assistance rebuilding, and he needs protection. We get quite a nice double strong male lead situation here as Mykel is brought into Ren's world. Mykel is determined to do his job but resisting his pull towards Ren is not easy. Let's just say these two tend to bicker and well things finally get intense and lead to a steamy encounter. The romance here is realistic given everything surrounding them and the action never stops! The drama between the families is strong here!

Dante and Rainn are taking back seat in this story while we see more of Ren and newcomer, Mykel. Picking up where we left off at the end of book one. Ren’s territory is under attack and threat of being taken away. He can’t let that happen. He needs support and he needs Mykel.
Overall, another great addition to the Lucifer’s Landing series. Another great addition to Davidson King’s booklist. Ms. King always has a way of bringing you in and keeping you entertained with her plot, characters, and writing. I love calling her books afternoon reads because once I start them I can’t put them down.

This is book 2 in Lucifer’s Landing and must be read in order to understand the story arc. What a wonderful addition to this series. Ren’s world is falling apart due to the death of his friend Yuma as well as his empire. When the house he is having build catches on fire due to faulty wiring, this brings the contractors brother in his field. Mykel is tasked to be head of his security due to his being an ex-cop and military. This starts the story with how Mykel arranges to keep Ren safe, getting rid of one of the competition and failing in love. Love this world and looking forward to reading what happens next.

Book 2 in the Lucifer’s Landing series continues with the action from book 1. Ren Ikeda’s home has been destroyed and he lost the man he had feelings for (though those feelings were not reciprocated). When he confronts the man who is in charge of the renovation but whose carelessness caused another fire, he meets Mykal Finlay, former cop and military man. I hate to call these two enemies to lovers-more like dislike-to-lovers. Mykal is forced to protect Ren to save his brother from having to repay the damages to Ren’s home. While he doesn’t want to get involved in mafia issues, he quickly comes to care for Ren. This was a very fast-paced read as the action did not stop. The five mafia families are still battling over control of Lucifer’s Landing and thus there is never a dull moment. I am very intrigued by Micah and Giovanni. I hope their story is next. I love the little hacker. It was nice to see Dante and Rainn again and I look forward to reading more about these characters. A very enjoyable addition to this series!

Ren has intrigued me since Dante‘s book and we finally get a glimpse into the inner workings of his organization. He is a soft soul, but when business needs to be handled, he takes no prisoners. Mykel comes to him when he is at a weak point to straighten his brother’s situation out. Ren is enamored with Mykel from their first meeting. Mykel feels like he is cornered into accepting a position on Ren’s team because of his brother’s situation, but when he’s all in, he’s all in. Mykel will defend Ren with his life, even though he doesn’t agree with his decisions. As the tensions mount between Ren and Mykel, the sexual tension is ready to explode. How will things turn out for Ren and Mykel?

Ever since I met Ren I have been waiting for his story. His calm demeanor needed to be ruffled up with passion. Mykel made a deal to save his brother, protect Ren through a new mob war. He was torn between his hatred for the mob and his desire to take Ren apart between the sheets. Passion turns to love as the streets of Lucifers Landing are once again on fire. Mykel will stop at nothing to protect and avenge Ren. I hope we get to see more of these two as this series progresses. A couple of their own books would be lovely.

I read this previously when it was released on an app however this is a different version from what I previously read.
Ren Ikeda is the Japanese Mafia Boss and the one who helped Dante, the Italian boss from the previous book.
Ren is someone that is a soft soul but needs to be ruthless to those around him.
Mykel is someone who takes no s*** from no one, not even from a mafia boss.
I liked how their first interaction occurred and how things went from there.
Ren was enamoured right away by Mykel and definitely Ren didn't go unnoticed by Mykel but he had his job to take seriously and that's what he did until an angry discussion turned to something more spicy. 👀
I liked the mafia things that were happening and seeing Rainn have his 2 cents to give and help the mafia bosses. I'm very excited for Gio's story as well as Elias which I'm sure will eventually come.

I couldn’t get a good read on him and was pleasantly surprised to see all sides, and what fun sides they are, of his personality in his book. My most happy surprise was meeting Mykel, and Zeus of course. Mykel is so dreamy, and watching the power plays run wild was fun. I now have my sights set on, well, that’s a mystery for another day.

It's been a hot minute since I read the first story, so it took me a minute to get into this one. However, once I grounded myself and started to enjoy it, the pages just kept flying. Ren, the mob boss of focus this round, finds his HEA with Mykel, the reluctant bodyguard. Not only was the pace of this book fast, but it was filled with action and some romance. I thoroughly enjoyed reading, and hoping for Gio's book next.

Yes few deaths but they were avenged by two sweethearts. Glad the story gotten better for second book!

Another great read from Davidson King with Ren and Mykel and Zeus. The three remaining Mob Bosses coming together to save Lucifer’s Landing was epic! But also the understanding and acceptance that grew between Ren and Mykel also led to true love for one another. I would love another story with Micah and Giovanni that incorporates all of the main characters throughout this series📚 💝📚

This is the second book in the Lucifer's Landing series and is not a standalone, I highly recommend you check the trigger warnings before reading the series. We met Ren in the first book and I loved his character so much I knew he'd get his own story and I was so glad not to have to wait long for it. Ren and Mykel have such chemistry from the beginning, even though Mykel tries to fight it.

Ren and Mikel’s story was filled with intrigue, passion, and yes…love. And, while I wish for peace in Lucifer’s Landing, I don’t expect it. Too many hints were dropped and I don’t trust Elias. I also REALLY hope Gio and (finder’s crossed) Micah get a HEA.

Ren and Mykel, what can I say? this is a great book, has plenty of action and plenty of heat. This whole series is so worth the read. The two characters, Ren and Mykel are absolutely fabulous together. I highly recommend this book, in fact I highly recommend this series
