Playing Ball: Life Lessons from My Journey to the Super Bowl and Beyond
NFL football star Vernon Davis delves into his astonishing career, from winning Super Bowl 50 in 2016 with the Denver Broncos to reinventing himself as an actor and producer, and recalls the hard-won lessons—including that infamous press conference—that paved his path to success. In October 2008, after a San Francisco loss to Seattle, Vernon Davis was put on blast by Coach Mike Singletary in a fiery speech criticizing his “me-myself-and-I attitude”. It proved to be the turning point in Davis’s career, and the inspiration for him to change his mindset, his playing, and his life. At the time, Davis was a young, talented player who had been drafted by the 49ers in 2006 at number six, one of the highest draft positions for a tight end in NFL history. When Vernon Davis was playing in the NFL I was a big fan of his so I was excited to get a chance to read this. I always like hearing the other side of the story when it comes to NFL or any other athlete because they are so much more than just the sport. I do think this memoir could have used some editing I just found it a bit repetitive. The introduction really didn’t rope me in either (sorry to Coach Mike Singletary). He was even more repetitive and feel like he didn’t have much of a point but it was such a long intro I felt like he was just trying to fill space. This does make me love Vernon on a personal level too and it provided so much background to give you an idea of what it was like for him growing up, succeeding in the NFL and all of his other endeavors. The tone of voice he uses is very casual throughout (possibly why I think editing could be useful in cutting it down) but it was very conversational which was a different change of pace. Whatever came to his mind or was though aloud was put down on paper. #goodreadsgiveaway

Reading 'Playing Ball' felt like sitting down with the author, Vernon Davis, for a heartfelt conversation about his life, struggles, and successes. It's more than just an autobiographical sports memoir—it's a story about resilience, personal growth, and finding purpose beyond football.
Through this book, the author takes us through key moments of his experiences in life, from his difficult childhood to making it big as an NFL player. Although I am not a sportsperson, I felt connected to his story. One of the most potent parts of the book is when he talks about the 2008 incident with his couch, who publicly called him out for his behaviour. Instead of treating it as a setback, Davis used it as a lesson and changed himself. That moment alone made me reflect on times in my own life when harsh criticism pushed me to grow.
The books definitely discuss his biggest achievements and his transition into the film industry, presenting him as a true player in life who grows in all circumstances.
You might feel scattered while the story jumps from one phase to another of his life, but honestly, you will be happy as a reader at the end of the book.
It is an inspiring read for players and all people who think that giving up is a solution. This book gives various instances from the author's life where he had the option to quit, but he fought and kept going. It makes a definite recommendation.

Playing Ball is a autobiographical look at the life of Vernon Davis. From his early days growing up in DC to his college life at the University of Maryland, to his 14 year career in the NFL with the 49ers, Broncos and Washington.
One thing I really enjoyed about this book was the fact that it was told the eyes and words of Vernon Davis himself. I liked the fact that he spoke about the non sports ventures that he immersed himself in, including his vast foundations and acting roles. He also

As a big 49ers fan I was so excited when I saw that Vernon Davis had written a memoir! I listened to his life story (he narrated it except for a beginning exert) - it was so interesting to hear about how he was raised and what led to how his life played out!

I really am not a football fan, but I was familiar with many of the player's names and teams mentioned in the book. I felt as if I was reading an interview, vs. reading a memoir, but I eventually did enjoy it for the message that was delivered.
Vernon had a very difficult childhood. His mother was an addict, his sister was an addict, and his brother had mental issues, finally being diagnosed with schizophrenia. Fortunately, his grandmother took control and raised him. Along with her husband, they provided stability and guidance for Vernon. He did get into a lot of trouble growing up and running with a gang, but straightened himself out through sports.
He is an entrepreneur and has found success in TV and films. He is a philanthropist as well. I ended up enjoying this memoir for his perseverance and grit.

Vernon’s memoir is a fantastic look into the mind and motivations about a former NFL linebacker. He talks honestly about his struggles with his mindset and ego, humbling himself as he clashes with teammates and coaches until it clicks: the rough around the edges demeanor doesn’t offset the skill. You need a good mindset and must be willing to sacrifice the parts of yourself that don’t lend themselves toward your goal, and in Vernon’s case, it was being the best football player he could be. His growth and adaptation is admirable, and he outlines his journey well in this book.
There are a ton of great, quotable lines in this book, and a great lesson about chasing your dreams and developing yourself in all aspects in addition to honing your skills.

I picked up the book because:
1. I've always enjoyed learning about how elite athletes operate.
2. I live in San Francisco, so I figure I should learn about someone who used to spend 8 years playing for the 49ers.
Vernon Davis had a tough childhood, growing up without a father and with a mother who was a drug addict. When he was young and got bullied by a big kid, he ran home, and his brother locked the door, forcing Davis to fight the kid outside so he could learn to protect himself. I guess this makes sense, but it's also very different from how many people I know were raised.
I find it interesting that he told controversial events from his past in a matter-of-fact way. Like when he stole bikes as a teenager (there were so many bikes around, and he was lowkey proud that his success rate was high), or when he refused to marry his long-term girlfriend (8 years at that point?) when she got pregnant simply because he knew there would be too many temptations for a young guy with money in the NFL like him to stay married. His honesty was refreshing.
Overall, I enjoyed the story. It introduced me to a very different way of living and thinking. I learned a bit about the NFL, too.

Playing Ball by Vernon Davis
This story is a journal of sorts about Vernon who is also the author.
From the beginning the thing that stuck with me was going to church every Sunday. My mother although not Catholic but married into a Catholic family, brought us to church and all other ceremonies over the years of our lives. We even went to school from Kindergarten to high school in a Catholic school.
Author's life starts out so traumatic. Very hard upbrining but he has his grandparents to tend to him and his siblings as the mother was a drug addict. She'd embarrass him many times while out in the neighborhood playing ball with his friends. He has nights where he was the one caught and ended up in jail. Finally after a felony he promised his grandparents he'd change. And he was able to do that. Found a new school not in the neighborhood and he had to prove himself in order to play ball with them, and he did. He had good grades and did so much with his life.
With such struggles he really has come out of the heartache and formed relationships and got a good head on his shoulders. I used to follow football but only the Patriots so I was familiar with some of the names. The organizations he created for the good of others is so great to read about. Helping others in the art field to educate them and then give them scholarships and give back to the organization. He read a lot of self help books and created other funds for other organizations that helped the community he lived in. There are so many to note. Now I'll have to go back to the movies he mentioned to see him as an actor. So cool. Love most how he stepped up to help his grandparents and his siblings. through the tough years.

I am not a sports enthusiast, but I love reading memoirs with real-life lessons, as this would create a new world of relatability with a person you have known through media.
My latest read, "Playing Ball: Life Lessons from My Journey to the Super Bowl and Beyond," was recommended by one of my friends who is a sports person, and I loved it.
It is an inspiring compilation of actual life events and experiences by former NFL star Vernon Davis. I didn't know him before, but this read taught me about his path from a difficult childhood to becoming a Super Bowl champion and tracing success. The book would imbibe you with his life through stories of his experiences and reveal the critical moments that shaped his character and career. The story portrays the significance of self-reflection, personal growth, and a more substantial commitment to teamwork and leadership. It highlights the importance of resilience and the value of learning from criticism in paving the path to success. Through this read, you will learn the reality behind the famous events associated with his life. His love for his game is inevitable, which is depicted very well through his journey of not giving up, learning from his mistakes, taking initiative, and giving direction whenever needed. Playing Ball is an intriguing memoir about Vernon Davis' childhood, life as a professional athlete, and life after football. It is well-detailed and inspiring. Vernon Davis's personal and professional growth is a joy to read about and how taking constructive criticism made him a better person.
I love to read memoirs because you get to understand celebrities/athletes differently. And that's what I felt as I was reading. Vernon didn't have an easy childhood, but the love his grandparents showed him and his siblings made the rough times bearable. He details his ups and downs which was great because it shows that anyone can change and grow for the better. Sure his moment may have been receiving public criticism from his coach, but it left an impact. That helped him understand the importance of a team which also transferred to his personal life.
What's great about this memoir is that you can still appreciate the redemption story here even if you aren't familiar with Vernon Davis.

This memoir focuses on the life of Vernon Davis, and he discusses many of the anecdotes, inspirations, and characters in his life so far. He isn't just a football star - Vernon Davis is a man of many talents who wades into creative genres as well. He discusses his experiences with a lot of vulnerability and openness that must have been tough at times, but all of the good advice he provides is so important. He talks about how to work as part of a team and how to be a good leader, and how to be responsible for your family and friends, as well as yourself.
I always really enjoy celebrity memoirs and this one was no different. I thought the writing was good, the selected stories were well-used to illustrate Davis' points, and it was a good length. The cover is nice, with a picture that brings out the character of Vernon Davis and his intensity. The font stands out really well on the black cover, so it definitely draws your eye. There's a lot to learn and take away from this memoir, and I'd recommend if you enjoy sports/celebrity inspirational memoirs or are a fan of Vernon Davis.

I didn't know much about Vernon Davis before reading this book but my husband is a high school teacher and football coach so I thought he might enjoy it. I love reading stories like this where people struggle through adversity and come out on top. It was an easy read but I was captivated by his story. Now it's in my husbands' classroom so high school boys can read it and hopefully also become inspired.

Interesting life story from retired football player Vernon Davis. While I enjoyed reading the book I thought that it wasn’t particularly well written/edited. A few redundant parts and numerous times he is reflecting on past events, scores, players, coaches etc in a guesswork way that should have been easy to look up and fix when it was edited.
