Narasingha: The Legend of Padma Purusha by Bhuban Patra is about the story of building the grandest monument of Kalinga, The Sun temple at Mundira (present-day Konark). "Narasingha: The Legend of Padma Purusha" is the second book in the "Kalinga" series. During the time of the thirteenth century Jagannath Temple was already built and Kalinga was entering its golden era. The story is narrated by The King Narasingha himself how he became one of the powerful monarchies of Bharata and his strategies of the Battle of Katasin in 1243BC. Narasingha also discovered that he hailed from the lineage of Lord Krishna and his life has a special purpose to full fill. And there is only one man who can help him to fully fulfill this purpose, Bhisnu Maharana.
.
Personal insight:-
1)I always love to read historical fictions, they always revealed new secrets to me and this one is based on the Kalinga Dynasty which involves the secrets that half of the Indians talks about, the secrets behind theSun temple with the backstories of the Battle of Katasin. So, it was always a perfect blend for me.
2) this book unfolds the secrets behind the Sun temple of Konark. Like, what are the secrets behind the construction of this temple? The secrets behind the floating idol in the mid-air. Why are the new and unusual methods used for building this temple? The author also solved the riddles surrounding the construction of the Sun Temple.
3) The fascinating story of Kalinga's war between Narasingha and the Bengal sultans is exciting to read. And the story offers a glimpse into the political dynamics of that time.
4) Guru Silpy is a mysterious figure who is closely connected with the construction of the temple. This mysterious figure gives another depth to the storyline.
5) Bhuban Patra successfully combines historical elements with fictional storytelling, creating a compelling narrative.
6) The character development is good, making it's a perfect read for every historical fiction lover.

“Wars end, but the spirit of sacrifice echoes through generations.”- The book is a gripping tale intermingled with ancient myth, history & realm of imagination.

It has been three years since I read 'The Lotus Land', but the story has stayed with me, and I have been eagerly awaiting its sequel. The novel is a deeply gratifying continuation of the Kalinga series Saga. As the first book introduced us to the mystery behind the Konark Temple and its chief architect Bishnu Maharana, this sequel unveils the battle of Kalinga, shrouded in mystic depth, grandeur, and thrilling storytelling by Narasingha Deva, the lion-hearted King of Kalinga.

“True victory lies not in conquest, but in remembering those who gave their lives” - a vivid imagery captured by the author. The prophecy, ever-present as the guiding flame, adds an intense depth to the narrative, evoking that “Destiny favors those who fight with honor.”

The core theme revolves around forged unity, indomitable will, and endurance. The Battle of Kalinga unfolds in sharp detail, offering readers a story that is more than a chronicle of war but a testament to bravery, loyalty, and ancestral legacy. It reflects that victory is never absolute with its poignant truth - 'A land lives on not by its walls, but by the blood of its sons.'

The characters are depicted beautifully. The portrayal of King Narasingha demonstrates strength and modesty. He is a protector of his people, unlike other rulers. Every character has its own uniqueness. Shiladitya's character exemplifies the vigour of youth, while Sangram Dada shows the gravity of wisdom and loyalty. Each characters form the soul of Kalinga’s defiance. Their journey represents that the strongest weapons to win a battle are unity and faith.

The novel elevates beyond the past; it is a timeless contemplation on the power of resilience and honor- it captures the larger-than-life tone that is perfect for fans of mythological fictions.

I just finished this book, and I have to say, it was an incredibly engaging and immersive read. At its heart, it traces the life of King Narasingha Deva from his early days as an inquisitive and determined prince to his rise as a strong and visionary ruler of Kalinga. What makes the narrative so compelling is that it doesn’t reduce him to just a warrior king; instead, it paints a layered portrait of a leader who was deeply invested in culture, architecture, and legacy.

One of the standout aspects for me was the detailed account of how the magnificent Konark Sun Temple came into existence. The book doesn’t simply describe it as another monument, but rather delves into the thought process, the engineering marvel, and the spiritual significance behind it. The exploration of why a unique construction technique was used, what hidden truths or mysteries the temple might hold, and the poignant tale of Bishnu Maharana and his son Silpy added a whole new dimension. These elements blended fact with legend so seamlessly that I often found myself pausing to imagine what might have actually unfolded centuries ago.

What I truly appreciated was that the story went beyond wars and victories. While the battles and political struggles were vividly described, they were balanced with the quieter yet equally powerful aspects of Kalinga’s golden age its architectural brilliance, cultural richness, and the ambitions of a ruler who wanted his kingdom to be remembered not only for conquests but for creativity and grandeur.
Reading it felt almost like time-travel as though I were standing amidst the bustling activity of artisans at the temple site, or walking through the royal court where decisions that shaped history were made. It’s this blend of history, mystery, and human emotion that makes the book stand out.

If you love historical fiction that doesn’t just retell events but invites you to experience them, this book is an absolute must-read. It’s perfect for anyone fascinated by India’s past, temple architecture, or the hidden stories behind iconic monuments.

Bhuban Patra comes up with yet another compelling historical fiction and ends the duology of the previous part of the Lotus Land. The narrative vividly resurrects 13th century Kalinga (modern day the state of Odisha) where the kingdom is in its height of maritime and architectural glory. Again, we come across a lot of intricate details about the architecture style and temple purpose with backstories. This novel majorly centers on King Narasingha Deva, the visionary monarch behind the majestic and supreme Sun Temple at Mundira (modern day Konark).
There are few points that I would like to highlight about this fantastic piece of work.
• The narrative explores the cultural and historical details blending fantastically with legends and facts.
• The whole story is told from the King’s perspective; he gradually grows from a curious prince to ruler and master mind behind the glorious architecture.
• The author intertwines political intrigue, warfare with Bengal Kings and spirituality making the story more informative for our fellow readers.
• The previous characters are included Bishnu Maharana and Guru Silpy.
• Both of these characters built an atmosphere of mysticism and divinity. They also gave a view on why the temples were built in an unconventional and mysterious techniques.
King Narasingha proudly presents the building of Konark Sun Temple not just a shrine to pray for his subjects but also as symbol of glory and his culture. The plot is set during the golden age of Kalinga as an empire with maritime superpower.
With thorough research the author has done it again. Readers who do have a knack of reading about India’s lost and unexplored culture will gobble up this novel. So as to say I would definitely recommend them to give it a shot.

Narasingha is a unique book which introduces us to one of the majestic periods of Indian history that left behind a legacy and a gem of Indian temple architecture, which is the Konark Sun Temple.

The narrative is set in Kalinga’s peak period in the early 13th century, and this is not just a story about kings and battles; it brings out ambition, artistry, and legends from the annals of Indian history. This narrator here is King Narasingha Deva himself, showing you the making of a monarch, the grandeur of titles and crowns and momentous events from the life of a king who came to be known as the greatest builder of Bharat.

Narasingha himself, being a protagonist here, takes us through his life, first as an inquisitive prince, and as the tale unfolds, we witness his transformation into a powerful ruler navigating the dangerous tides of politics, war, and culture. The heart of the story is the construction of the Sun Temple at Mundira—today celebrated as Konark—one of the most awe-inspiring and mysterious monuments in Indian history.

In the parallel, the author recreates the political tensions between Kalinga and the Bengal Kings, painting war scenes and the narrative of Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga, especially interconnecting the chronicles from Lord Krishna's life, which gives readers mythological depth.

Narasingha is an interesting and enriching blend of fiction, history and mythology, and it must be read not just as a novel but to realise the significance of every stone, the tension of every battle, and the vision of Bharat's extraordinary king who refused to be forgotten.

"Narasingha" by Bhuban Patra is the second book of Konarak Secrets, the historical fiction that revolves around the golden era of Kalinga and the making of the Konark Temple.

While the first book is told from the chief architect of Konarak Temple, Bishnu Maharana's perspective, this second book is told from the King Narasingha Deva, the fearsome Warrior-King of Kalinga. In this book we witness the conflicts between the Kalinga king and the Bengal Sultanate mostly, but the real theme is the mystery and secrets that revolve around the Konark Temple.

Just like the first book, the author easily takes us to the time of the golden era of Kalinga through this book too and shows us another kind of beauty of the land through the eyes of the king, which is jagged and dangerous because of all the enemies that are lingering around the kingdom but also the powerful and resilient side of it and how it still stands and prospers among them.

Then come the mysteries: the mystery around the king's lineage and the mystery that surrounds the renowned temple that is being built and is going to have an inauguration soon by the hand of the king are engaging and thrilling. We got to know some of the mysteries, but it also left so much. And the way the author ends the book, it will give you goosebumps, and you will crave the next one immediately.

I'm loving this series so far; how beautifully the author put together the ancient history and his imagination, as well as some mythological elements, is brilliant. I highly recommend this series if you also love this kind of genre-bending novel.

Okay, so here’s the thing about this book — it doesn’t just give you a history lesson, it drags you right into 13th-century Kalinga where ambition, battles, and stone meet. We meet Narasingha Deva, first as a curious prince and then as a king who refuses to just sit on a throne — he wants to build something that will outlast time itself. That “something” turns out to be the grand Sun Temple at Mundira, what we now know as Konark.

The narration feels personal because it’s told in Narasingha’s own voice. You get to see him stumble, rise, fight, and dream. I liked that it’s not only about kings swinging swords and plotting wars (though there are plenty of battles with the Bengal kings). The real heartbeat here is the temple. Every chapter makes you wonder — was it only a monument, or did it hide secrets? Why use such bizarre, never-before techniques when easier ones already existed? And who on earth was Bishnu Maharana, really? The mystery element keeps you hooked, because the temple is more than just stone — it’s almost like a character in itself.

What I enjoyed most is that the book doesn’t get dry or preachy. The writing is smooth, the pace steady, and it leaves you googling Konark at 2 AM because suddenly you want to see those carvings with your own eyes. If you’re into history, legends, or just love stories about impossible ambition, this will work for you.

Before divulging my thoughts about this book, I must say that I honestly didn’t know much about King Narasingha Deva or the Sun Temple of Konark. But as I went through the chapters, I was surprised by how well the author brought that whole time to life. The way the carvings, designs, and hidden meanings of the temple were described made me feel like I was walking through history. I never realized so much thought and planning had gone into every single detail of the temple.

What I found really interesting was that the story is told in the King’s own voice. It actually felt like Narasingha himself was sharing his journey—from being a curious young prince to becoming one of the strongest rulers of Bharat. The parts about the battles with the Bengal kings were very gripping, and it also showed why he is remembered as such a great builder.

I also liked how the book mixed history with mythology and even some suspense. The references to Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga gave me a new way to think about those times and how they connect to today. As someone who enjoys history and mythology, I really liked this book. The characters felt alive, the Sun Temple’s brilliance came across so well, and overall it was both engaging and informative. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about our heritage.

This book narrates the story of King Narasingha Deva, who ruled the Kalinga Kingdom and established his name in Indian history. He is not just a ruler of Kalinga but also the king who built and gave us the heritage and architecture-filled Konark Sun Temple.

I have always been fascinated by the Konark Sun Temple, looking at its beauty and brilliant architecture, but I never knew the temple would withhold so many mysteries and secrets within it.

This is the book that initially focuses on King Narasingha Deva's childhood days, how he built and ruled the kingdom, in a detailed narration. After the in-depth narration of his life, the story then moves to the descriptive part of the Sun Temple. The details presented in this book about the temple and its secrets were so new to me. Along with the history of the Kalinga King, his bravery and the wars were also discussed in great detail in this book. I particularly enjoyed the war sequences and the detailed depiction of the Sun Temple's construction and secrets. These sections stood out to me the most and became my favorite parts of the book. The only downside I felt in this book was that the paragraphs were quite large, and it felt and gave a hefty reading experience.

You enter the 13th-century world of Kalinga not as a passive observer but as a witness to legacy in the making. Narrated through the eyes of King Narasingha Deva, the novel brings to life the golden ambitions and shadowed struggles that shaped the reign of a monarch driven to leave an indelible mark—both in stone and in memory.

The transformation from inquisitive prince to revered builder is painted with authenticity and gravity. The towering ambition behind the Konark Sun Temple becomes more than architectural marvel—it stands as a symbol of spiritual purpose, regal power, and cultural devotion. I could feel the clang of chisels and the weight of prophecy in each chapter, a testament to Patra’s depth of research and his ability to breathe life into ancient legends.

Political intrigue and battlefield grit are balanced by quieter moments of introspection. The story does more than chronicle battles—it explores why kings build and how those edifices whisper the values of a civilization across centuries. Richly historical yet imaginative, it was impossible not to feel both awed and emotionally rooted in the terrain.

"You know what you must do when you return to Kalinga. If you want to be a good king, you must take care of your people. Your territories are beset by hostiles, and bringing peace should be your first task. You will have to play many roles. Those who succeed will know you as a great king and remember you as a great builder."

In my history lessons back in school, reading about the Kalinga period was one of my favorites. This story revolves around Narasingha Deva, the King of Kalinga, and the constructor of this grand sun temple built in Mundira. I did not know much about him until I read the book.

Whenever we hear the word "Kalinga," only the Kalinga war comes to our mind. But that's not it all. I got to learn a lot about our Indian history during the Kalinga period. It felt really great knowing about King Narasingha and his life.

The authors narration and the segregation of the topic into various chapters added to the pleasure of reading. I could see there was a lot of depth and research that went behind in writing the book. I congratulate the author on this front.
