BLACK BLANK VARIANT COVER ALSO AVAILABLE Years ago, in a familiar church tower, the Venom symbiote was spurned by Peter Parker and found a willing host in the vengeful and wrathful Eddie Brock! Or, at least, that's the story you know! From rising stars JEREMY HOLT (MARVEL'S SPIDER-VERSE) and JESÚS HERVÁS ( UNLEASHED) comes an ALL-NEW look at what makes the Marvel Universe's most sinister symbiote tick, with a journey that reimagines its earliest days bonded to a host with a rage and temper ENTIRELY different from those of Eddie Brock!
Jeremy Holt is a non-binary author whose works include Gatsby, Made in Korea, Virtually Yours, Before Houdini, After Houdini, and Skip to the End.
An original art page from After Houdini was acquired by The Houdini Museum of NYC, where it now hangs in its permanent collection. And Skip to the End was one of three works of fiction that The New York Times included in an in-depth expose titled Kurt Cobain: What to Read and Watch, 25 Years After the Nirvana Leader’s Death.
They have received high praise from Brian K. Vaughan (Y the Last Man, Saga, Paper Girls) and NYT crossword constructor David Kwong. Originally from no place in particular, they’ve lived in Italy, Singapore, England, Norway, Texas, Vermont, and Brooklyn, before settling in Kingston, New York.
I was excited to see where this went but lost interest a few pages in. She-Hulk as a character holds no interest for me, and this one didn't do a great job of showcasing a crossover.
Great ending, though. Will be curious about the second issue.
It was an interesting concept on possible "What If" scenarios with Venom possessing several well-known Marvel characters: She-Hulk, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Loki, and Moon Knight, and it just felt very underwhelming, for example some of the characters that were venomonized could've been explored further in more depth and gave it more peril than it was in the comic and needed more room for the story to flesh the story out to make the conflict resolution to be more satisfying than it was.
Shorter than I expected. Interesting premise, took me a moment to understand the time skip (doh), some kind of fetishy art at the beginning (I don't read a lot of She-Hulk, but I expect that's not uncommon - heck Eddie has been naked for more of the current Venom arc than not), and a nice glimpse at were the story is headed.
