K R (Kirsten) Solberg believes in the enduring power of story. She’s a wordsmith, graphic artist, and not too bad with a camera. Armed with a Bachelor of Arts in writing from Metro State University, she dwells in the woods of Wisconsin with her patient husband and their two book-obsessed children. She is disastrously introverted and chronically sarcastic.

Kirsten has roots in St. Paul, Minnesota, where her storytelling journey began under the nurturing wing of her mother and co-author. Her father’s dramatic bed-time readings of Tolkien contributed to this obsession.

These days, literature, camping, anime, and deep-fried cheese curds fuel her creative fires. She wishes she had a cooler origin story, but those are reserved for the varied and dynamic characters found in the pages of The Palimar Saga, a gripping flintlock fantasy series she wrote alongside C R Jacobson.

The initial chapters are dedicated to meticulous world-building, immersing readers in the rich details of the universe. The author’s beautiful attention to detail paints vivid scenes of nations and introduces a diverse cast of characters, each playing a unique role in the unfolding saga. I referenced the appendix often to make sure I was following the characters, as the list is quite vast! It’s a thrilling novel and I loved the familial themes.

I received an audiobook from the author (Solberg), she co-wrote this novel with her mom. I think that is so cool. I want to add, this is my honest and voluntarily given review.

First, I’ve had this for a while and it somehow got shuffled to a dark corner of my TBR, so I apologize to the author but I’m happy I finally got to it.

This is a classic epic fantasy with world building that was so well done that I was loving the time getting a feel for everything. I usually want to get through the world building and get on with the story. Also, how did you get those narrators? I didn’t pay attention to who was narrating before I started the novel, but immediately I recognized the iconic voice. Am I in the Cosmere? That made this feel even more like I was in for a treat. There is a lot going on and the author has a guide to help you through it. I thought, nah, I don’t need it. My advice, use the guide. There are lots of characters and questions you are going to have. Complex stories don’t scare me off because I like a novel that makes me stay on my toes. If you love trolls, you’re going to love Shane and also the wonderful, Ella. I was intrigued by immortals that can perish and the god-killer. Why do I always scratch my head when immortals can be eliminated? Obviously, there is an asterisk next to the word immortal in certain situations. Ok, I’m rambling. If you love epic fantasy you need to jump into this novel with both feet and immerse yourself in this world. There are going to be several books in this series so brace yourself. We’ve only just begun! (Isn’t that a song?). Sanderson, Tolkien and Martin fans are going to love this.

This book is fantastical and so full of action! There is so much character and world building going on and it includes a map and multiple appendix for races, characters, places, etc. sometimes the amount of points of view and different events got overwhelming but it got easier as I read. It is definitely a big fantasy filled book and doesn't have romance in the book. It's nice to have a good solid fantasy without romance attached to it. I recommend reading the physical book over the Kindle so that you can flip back and forth to the map and appendixes.
Even though i read this book a couple years ago, it is still one of my top favorites that I talk about and recommend regularly and am following for the next installment to come out!

This is really good fanatasy read. It is very detailed and a more complex read. The authors included an index of characters to help along the way. Can't wait to jump into book 2.

This hefty fantasy book is chock full of action and adventure. This very detailed book builds an elaborate world filled with different species such as trolls, fae, skin-changers. The world built is expansive as are the many characters within the book.

I will say, though, that with the amount of characters in the book, I found myself getting a little confused and lost in the storylines. I wasn’t sure who was who and what their goal/objective was in the story. The appendix in the back gives more backstory to each of the characters, but I believe it would be easier to retain if their stories were written as part of the book to help clarify them.

Overall, the book was well written and very entertaining. Solberg and Jacobson have done a great job of creating a lush and extensive new world, with a very complex and extensive storyline.

If you like high fantasy and detailed, hefty series, Remnant is a great book to read!

I received an advance reader copy from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed this overall, but I thought it took a while to get past the world building parts. It's not a genre I would normally read, so i think that was part of it, but overall it was well written and thorough.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

It's not often that I hit a fantasy novel that's the perfect blend of intergenerational adventure, but KR Solberg and CR Jacobson have pulled together a compelling tale that finds that balance. Jon Therman and his family are smugglers, getting by in a land that staggers under the yoke of an oppressive Drawlen empire ruled by authoritarian immortals and their thugs.

And for the most, he's happy to be smuggling sunrock, and he and his wife are doing their best for their kids ... and maybe things would have continued like that indefinitely if it weren't for the fact that the nefarious immortals are sniffing around for Jon's kids. Because Reasons. I'm not going to spoil it for you.

While things get off to a relatively sedate start, stuff becomes unhinged quite quickly and the story picks up momentum as everyone pretty much gets scattered to the four quarters. And nothing peeves a parent more than having bad people threaten their brood – and hijinks ensue.

What stands out for me is the attention to detail with the worldbuilding. I am an unrepentant Tolkien nerd, so to have an author put so much effort into their setting really tickled me. And yeah, a rather large, diverse cast of characters, too, all of whom you quickly realise have complex backstories. And baggage. Booyeah! The authors throw readers in at the deep end, which I love. There's so much to discover.

I listened to the audiobook version of this which was dual-narrated by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading (who're known for their reading of Brandon Sanderson's novels). Granted, this was my first time experiencing the pair, and while I liked Reading, I wasn't that sold on Kramer at the start (I'll admit I'm a Simon Vance fangrrrl.) But it's a treat having two immensely talented and experienced voice actors at the helm, so if audiobooks are your jam you so will not be disappointed.

But a word of warning – there is a large cast. So, if you struggle with names and stuff, maybe have a print or ebook handy so you can consult the appendix. This is flintlock adventure fantasy with familiar themes. I was thinking a lot about the old telly series Firefly in terms of the banter and the ease with which the characters interact with each other. I don't see enough of this in epic fantasy.

Even better, we see some non-human sentients like trolls and shapeshifters, all with complex backgrounds – which I always adore. The authors' style is easy to get into, solidly written and engaging, resulting in a series I will heartily recommend to anyone who wants an epic that features ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances where they realise their heroic qualities.

This is a great story about Jon Therman and his family who smuggle sunrocks to earn money in order to live in a Drawlen controlled city since the Drawls control everything in their country. When an evil immortal named Selvator Kane invades their town in order to hunt down Jon’s children who are in the bloodline that he needs, Jon’s wife Ruth and son Jeb are captured and transported through a wraith gate. Then Jon and his son Nate battle against Drawlen with the help of the Red Watch and the Ruvian people. A favorite character is Nate who is a good sniper, and he is a Ruvian scout helping the Ruvians make a new city so that they can stay hidden from Drawlen. When Nate tells the Ruvians about the wraith gait, they unite to fight against the Drawls. Another favorite character is Rodden known as the Arch Traitor who was once of Drawlen but now he is part of the Red Watch, a spy network working for the Freelands. Rodden is an immortal skin changer with yellow eyes who has two forms: an alley cat and a hell cat. The Battle of Sentinel Ridge at the end of the book is very exciting because it involves a godkiller who is able to kill several immortals, but he goes rogue and attempts to kill the good immortals, but Nate and his dad Jon are able to stop him. I can’t wait for book two to find out what happens to Jeb and Ruth and whether or not Ella meets Liiesh Romanus. I am also eager to find out if Jeb is a ralenta or what other powers he might have that Selvator Kane wants him.

Okay, so this is one of my new favorite worlds. I love this story! It took a little bit of a brain adjustment to get into, with the huge cast of characters and wide range of povs, but once I found that groove, it was excellent. The world is so enormous, and the world-building does take up the first part of the book, but as the story moves along it feels like the different beings and powers are introduced very organically. The politics isn’t for everyone, but I think it is very well done.

The only reason I hesitate to give 5 stars is because it did take some initial work to get into, and I do wish I had more time with some of the povs. However, the cast is so large, the story so enormous, that I can understand how that may be difficult. This story threw the reader straight into the plot, sink or swim. It was not for a newcomer to epic fantasy. There are entire relationships and lives that predate these pages, or unfold within, but apart from the povs. I absolutely loved it. I am starting the second book immediately.

I did receive the second book, Uprising, as an ARC, and a copy of Remnant as well, and this is my honest and voluntary review. I am new to ARCs, and I have to say I lucked out with this being my introduction. Well done, K. R. Solberg and C. R. Jacobson! This book is wonderful and I am a fan! 4.5/5 ⭐️

When Jon Thurman and his family of smugglers get entangled in a manhunt for a godkiller they are forced out of hiding to face off against corrupt leaders and evil immortals. This will lead to learning things about their past that Jon would rather keep secret.

Remnant is a flintlock fantasy that is full of action scenes and deep character moments. This is a multi POV story with a strong and daring female perspective as well. The writing feels influenced by the writing of Brandon Sanderson while also having a slightly darker feel as well. The author does not hold your hand but expects you to keep up as you are thrown into a unique fantasy world with multiple fantasy races and interesting magic.

Something that I personally appreciated about this story was that while it wasn’t a Christian fantasy book, the author masterfully weaves Christian themes throughout the story as the protagonists have a deeply rooted faith in The Sovereign. Below is a quote that stood out to me concerned the acceptance of suffering:
“You know Sovereign’s grace is sufficient for your sins?” “Yes.” She patted his hand. “It is also sufficient for your suffering.”

Remnant asks the question whether scattered remnants of a once unified land can come together against an unrelenting evil?

This is a highly detailed world with magic, shades, trolls, Fae, shapeshifters and other creatures.
It's an intense epic fantasy with a complex storyline and multiple subplots, battles, and quests.
I would recommend reading over the character/roles appendix at the end of the book first as there is an extensive and diverse amount of characters and it was hard to keep track at times especially with their different abilities and jobs.
Overall this was an intriguing adventure with rogues, masters, immortals, spies, collectors and oracle's, with detailed worldbuilding, centred around a family of smugglers each with a key role to play in this ongoing saga.

A Rich Storyline with Strong Characters

I loved having the physical copy to review chapters and to access the appendix because the world-building is complex. Nothing was predictable, so I was surprised and delighted by events. The details of the family and their background fascinated me. I’m now invested in these characters’ lives, so I want to know what is going to happen to them, especially to Ruth and Jeb. After finishing Remnant, I am eagerly waiting for book 2 because I want to know how all the conflicts are going to be resolved. If you want to read an intriguing fantasy, this book will thrill your imagination.

I really started to get attached to a few of the characters. There was little romance, but there was so much to discover about this world and the types of people. I had a bit of a hard time keeping track of all the characters and the different types of characters because there was so much going on. I didn't see the lists of characters until I finished the book.
If you like high fantasy with battles and bloodshed that doesn't focus on romance then this book might be for you.
I look forward to reading the next book to see where the adventure continues to.

Really enjoyed this first book of the Palimar Saga! Ton's of interesting characters in a vividly described world where multiple powerful beings (with a variety of powers and physical characteristics) rule over interesting people groups who have their own gifts, abilities and powers. Exciting depiction of oppressed peoples banding together despite their varying backgrounds or ancestry, using their unique gifts to resist and fight back agains cruel and corrupt leaders. Looking forward to Book 2!

I didn't dislike this book, but I didn't really enjoy it. I was often confused by similar names and a lot of the world building didn't make sense. It was clear that something was going on and there were things I was missing.

I found the portal/gate things interesting, but it was overshadowed by everything else.

Ironically, the characters were described, and yet I had no idea what anyone really looked like. There were characters with wings, but I couldn't figure out what those wings looked like.

I thought this was a fresh take on classic fantasy. Especially the way the author describes and uses immortals in her book. The characters, while there are many, are each unique in their own way and deliver fun bits of lore throughout... especially things concerning Jon Therman. My favorite characters were Nate, Ella, and Sean. I felt their pov chapters offered the most juice and I look forward to their growth. The villains in the book are also intriguing. Good things are definitely waiting in book 2 and I will certainly be back.

Genuinely enjoyed this book more than I thought I would, and I thought I would really like it. This is fae Fantasy done right! Pay attention while you read this book because there are several factions jockeying for control and influence. The antagonistic forces still feel overwhelming despite having very competent characters at every turn. This book starts slow and gradually builds to a crescendo that is near addictive.

If you like charming smugglers, daring rogues, dead eye sharp shooters, scrappy underdogs, and magic, this is a fantastic read.

I love this book. You get to know the characters and there are a lot of them. The back of the book has 5 appendix to look through. I'm glad I looked them over. The book flows well between some of the characters and full of action. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy or distorpian world. It doesn't hurt to know the authors. Very well written, high, yet cozy fantasy. I need to reread this as it was a bit difficult to follow, given how dense the world building is. The characters are so lovable, though! I can tell Remnant set up the series well. I just need to get my head there again to absorb the information and am excited to do so!

Summary

Jon, a former slave, just wants to keep his family safe, but when his daughter, Ella, risks everything to save her friend, their fates become intertwined with a cynical spy, a ruthless cult, and a growing rebellion. The world of Remnant is full of magic, intrigue, and high-stakes action, where even the smallest choices can have massive consequences.

Review
This book took some getting used to. The beginning had a strong setup, but the story jumped between characters and locations frequently, which made it a bit hard to settle into at first. However, once I got into the rhythm, I was hooked. The world-building is rich, and the action scenes are cinematic. The multiple POVs took some patience to track, but the payoff was worth it.
Michael Kramer and Kate Reading didn’t disappoint here. Their narration brought the characters to life, making it easy to follow the multi-POV structure. Kramer’s deep, steady voice gave weight to the darker moments, while Reading’s delivery kept the emotional beats compelling. Some pacing issues cropped up in denser sections, but overall, they made this complex story immersive.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, but with a small caveat: it takes some time to get into. If you love epic fantasy with deep world-building and multi-POV storytelling, you’ll enjoy it. If you prefer a more straightforward narrative, it might take a bit more patience. That said, once it finds its rhythm, it’s an exciting, well-crafted adventure.

The writing style of this novel is tight and action driven, filled with punchy verbs. Each chapter ends with a gripper that is often either a surprise, a shock, or a punch line. I loved the dialogue. It is often pithy, humorous, insightful, or haunting. Humor is threaded through this intense battle-driven story that kept me on my toes and delighted me with surprise.

I loved that the main characters grow into their strengths or powers through training, hard work, determination, or difficult circumstances, rather than the overdone pattern of characters inheriting powers that they can instantly wield after being clueless and resistant. The main characters are varied but all are interesting, complex, and honorable.

The expansive world unfolds through the action that follows the story line of several characters who merge about halfway through the novel. Since the core of the story is a family saga, it’s appropriate for a mature, well-read child who loves fantasy adventure. FYI: there are a few swear words, but if your kids have read Harry Potter (which includes them a few times) they’ll be able to handle this story and its level of evil, darkness, and battles.

It’s an intense, thrilling read that drew me into a world where I cared deeply about the outcome of the main characters. I highly anticipate book two.

Every chapter begins with naming the POV character and sometimes a new POV is named at chapter breaks. So, pay attention to these details, especially at the chapter beginnings when the dates and locations are also given.

FYI: the Palimar Saga author website gives detailed information, such as a map of Palimar and a complete glossary of terms. This was helpful to consult while reading the story.

A Hunt mixed with Revenge, Protection, & Rebellion, ending with a Battle

The story is about a hunt for a godkiller. Jon Therman and his family get tangled up in this hunt. His son Rem is partnered with Shane Zem’Arta as spy agents in the Red Watch. Shane helps Jon in his Rock Smuggling business. My favorite character is Rem because he is a trained ralenta who can teleport (which is called tracing) with the power of shades who can also be sent to listen and spy or used to cloak, which is like a barrier that makes you invisible. His powerful fighting ability allows him to use more than one weapon at a time. He seems like he’s angry but when you get to know him you realize that he is actually sarcastically funny. My second favorite character is Calla Dantiego, the Deputy Rogue Master. I love when he fights the evil Collector Mavell by using his multiple powers with his own body as well as his shades. My favorite scene is when the Drawls are trying to invade the Deep Wood. It is loaded with great battle scenes. Jon Therman gets his revenge by killing one of the Drawls who sends Jon’s son and wife through a wraith gate. This book includes all the things that I like about a story: adventure, revenge, tricks, and rebellion against evil. The book ends with uncertainty about some of the characters, so I can’t wait for book two to find out more about Calla and what happens to Jeb & Ruth.

4.5 Stars - This book grabs your attention from page one and doesn’t let go. It’s a story packed with high stakes, eerie twists, and a lingering sense that something just beneath the surface isn’t quite right. The author masterfully balances tension and suspense, building a world that feels grounded yet unsettling.

The protagonist is a strong anchor for the story—layered, flawed, and easy to root for. Their journey is as much about survival as it is about uncovering hidden truths, and their voice feels authentic throughout. The writing is cinematic in the best way, with scenes that are easy to visualize and dialogue that feels natural.

One of the book’s strengths is its ability to keep you guessing. This is a constant thread that builds with each chapter. It has that "just one more chapter" pull, which makes it a perfect binge read.

If there’s a critique, it’s that a few of the supporting characters could have used more development. Some of their motivations felt a bit underexplored, and a few scenes leaned heavily on exposition. But overall, these are small bumps in an otherwise solid ride.

This book was paced well for me and if you like that with a touch of atmospheric tension along with a touch of the unexplained, The Remnant is absolutely worth the read—and a strong start to what feels like a much bigger story to come.

I really enjoyed Remnant and how different the world felt. Fantasy with a colonial feel isn’t something I see too often. The banshees were a nice touch. Creepy, dangerous, unhinged. Every time they showed up it made things more intense. The Collectors were also really interesting, a little mysterious but gaining more complexity as the story built. And being a portal fan, the wraith gates added a great sense of scale to the story and made the world feel much bigger. Give me more of this dark frontier fantasy where monsters, magic, and mystery battle for my interest.

But it was how Solberg and Jacobson wielded the language. It hooked me right from the start. The lore was engaging, and I liked how the story slowly revealed more about how things work instead of dumping it all at once. It kept me curious and made the setting feel layered and thought out. I was warned ahead of time that the authors won't hold your hand, which is true, but that also means, like with any good fantasy series, the build up is sluggish to start.

My only real critique is that the “mind call” came in a little late. It’s a cool concept, and I think an earlier mention or hint of it would’ve helped it feel more naturally woven into the story. Still, that’s a small thing overall. Solid five-star read for me.

An interesting first step into a new fantasy world.

I listened to the audio version of this work, read by the irreplaceable Michael Kramer and Kate Reading. Their familiar voices coupled with the sparse, effective prose made me feel often like I had stepped into another world of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere.

This work is trim and flows. The prose moves at a good clip with little awkwardness or stiltedness. There are frequent hints at a broader world to be explored in the future.

Perhaps my chief complaint would be that the book felt too broad in scope for it's length in words. A large cast and a wide world are hard to fit within a short book without giving short shrift to certain characters or elements.

The effect is that the "Part 1" of the title ends up standing out, and it takes a while to figure out the cast and the setting.

Otherwise, the book was enjoyable and interesting. Worth a read.

Some of the best portions of this book were when the world building and different groups came together. Some of the slowest and hardest portions to get though are the establishment of the characters that make up the different groups involved in the story.

The first few chapters set up what I thought was going to be a very interesting story about a smuggler setting up a new home for an outcast nation without a country. Then the story started jumping around.

At points this book was hard to follow and I didn’t feel like I had a cohesive story until 2/3rds through the book. At that point I felt like I was finally able to understand what was going on.

I am looking forward to the next part of this story, now that I feel I understand what is going on.

I absolutely loved this book. Listen, LISTEN, imma say something scandalous…
If you like Brandon Sanderson… you will like this book. I know. I said it. I was SO engrossed and could not put this down. It is like if Castlevania and the French Revolution had a baby but instead of Vampires they’re delulu immortals. 😂
It’s definitely an epic fantasy that feels like a dnd book. There are different creatures and races and battles and political intrigue, hidden identities. Shane was my favorite character. Well, so was Ella. Well, I loved them all! Family and found family! I NEED the next book.
