(4.0) An imaginative fantasy tale about an artist, Zita, and her grandson, Malo, celebrating their shared love of art. Zita attracts many admirers, including a ship full of art-loving pirates and their Captain, whose appetite for art reflects a longing to fill the void left by a mysterious winged muse. The artwork has a storybook charm, reminiscent of whimsical Miyazaki, blended with soft pastel steampunk illustrations.

About 115 pages, this beautiful graphic novel has a lot of cool fantasy steampunk elements, mechanical pigeons, flying elevators… flying ships and PIRATES.
His grandmother’s painting was stolen from the museum. Not just that, they are taken by a ship full of artists… pirates. Grandmother is in. She is super adventurous and brave, while her grandson lacks confidence. But… only he can see Cyane. Oh, no… There is danger on the ship, and it’s up to Malo and Cyane now. This is so inspiring because Malo brings to life what he draws. With a bit of imagination, we can too. Great homage to painters, artists, and color. The villain is scary! AAHA! Thank you, author, for that ending.

Un récit jeunesse haut en couleurs, parfait pour les passionnés d’art, qui laisse une grande place au thème des relations familiales et amicales et qui aborde le syndrome de l’imposteur à travers le personnage de Malo.
Suivez nos deux (voire trois) personnages principaux à travers une aventure palpitante peuplée de monstres et de pirates, parfaite pour les jeunes qui doutent d’eux-mêmes ou qui souhaitent seulement s’offrir un bon moment de lecture.

Grandmother and grandchild goodness meets magic and adventure to form an exciting and wholesome tale.
Malo's grandmother is a renowned artist and sees amazing potential in Malo's abilities...although he doesn't agree because he never even knows what to create. When a trip to the gallery coincides with the theft of one of his grandmother's paintings, more than a mystery is set into play. Instead, Malo follows his grandmother to the building's roof where they find a flying elevator. That takes them to a flying pirate ship, with a crew which loves to paint. Add a questionable captain, a scared muse, and a very determined detective, and Malo is on the adventure of a lifetime.
This is a playful fantasy, which lets the imagination take flight in original ways. A flying elevator already will raise the first eyebrows, but it's the artistic pirates which adds unique flair. While the pirate ship and its crew hold traditional flair (outside of flying, of course), these pirates 'raid' by dropping overboard with giant paintbrushes to decorate the sides of buildings. Their love for color is fun, too. Then, there's the muse with her little wings, who disappears into artwork at will, as well, as a captain, who has a surprising side to add a sense of danger and tension...something every true adventure needs. There's also a nod toward steampunk with the detectives mechanical bird. In other words, there's a lot of unexpected details to let dreams soar and keep the pacing quick the entire way through.
There's also food for thought built in. First, there's the grandmother's desire for the grandson to follow her path. She isn't really pushy but just the high-expectations bug Malo. Then, there's a bit of self-discovery as Malo learns to open up and step beyond his comfort zone. There's also lessons about greed, and a discussion-worthy visit to graffiti's place and rightness in society.
The illustrations let the fantasy flow and keep the tension high to accompany the text wonderfully. It's enjoyable to simply flip through these and enjoy the story. But the text also does a nice job and bringing zest and plot in the right ways. It fits well to the age group, especially the middle and lower ends. The art direction will settle better with some readers than others.
It's a lovely read with tons of fantasy goodness and will delight especially creative readers.

The sky above Paris is the setting for this middle grade graphic fantasy. Robberies of art have been increasing around the world. But Madame Zita is just interested in making art. Her grandson Malo, an aspiring artist himself, accompanies his grandmother to her museum installation where they a meet the mysterious Mr. Magenta, a self-professed super fan. Malo and his grandmother take a flying elevator to a scarlet airship of artist pirates where Mr. Magenta welcomes them. But something is not right, and the flying girl Cyane becomes Malo’s friend and co-conspirator as they try to figure out how to defeat the ravenous appetite of an art-eating monster. Is Malo’s art the answer?

It was described as inspired by Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" and Disney's "Encanto". I can see the aspect of the whimsical art being similar to Ghibli's and colors of Encanto but the storyline felt more reminiscent of "Howl's Moving Castle" and Disney's "Moana". Reasons being the mechanical aspect of the ship and the second protagonist (Cyane) having to seek help from a more powerful being due to jealousy and power. The expectations on the main protagonist (Malo) felt heavy and he was unsure of himself that he could live up to it. Malo at first abandoned the thought of being an artist and found himself in the process.

The artwork in this is very cute. I especially loved the different iterations of the captain. I would've liked some variation with the text bubbles, though. They were just stark white ovals with a non-handwritten looking font.

C'était une super lecture ! Une histoire très sympa, avec des rebondissements, une intrigue très cool et de la rigolade. Un univers très coloré avec des tas de personnes très agréables et hyper gentils. C'était très beau, j'ai adoré !

Une bande dessinée qui m'a fait lâché une larme. Ce n'est pas peu dire sachant que ce n'est pas mon genre de prédilection. Cependant la qualité du dessin, la douceur des couleurs et l'histoire m'ont permis de m'immerger entièrement dans ce livre.

Le navire écarlate c'est une histoire de relation entre une mamie artiste et son petit fils qui manque de confiance en lui. Ils sont tous les deux artistes. L'art est au centre de cette histoire et d'ailleurs, l'ouvrage débute par la touchante citation suivante : "À celles et ceux qui ont un jour tenu un crayon pour s'évader."
J'ai apprécié le concept, l'univers et le contextes étaient intéressants. La grand-mère est trop marrante même si elle aide pas trop l'anxiété de son petit fils qui est peu sûr de lui.
La palette de couleur est agréable. Ce sont des tons un peu doux et atténués (mutés).
Les thèmes abordés sont, entre autres, l'amour de l'art, la créativité, l'acceptance de soi, la vision que l'on a de soi et de ses propres capacités. Trouver des choses belles, quand d'autres y sont indifférents. L'art est extrêmement important pour certains et pour d'autres ce sont juste des gribouillis sur des toiles. On explore aussi le fait de devoir prendre des décisions pour protéger ses proches. Il y a de l'action, de l'aventure, des dilemmes. La question de l'art est au centre.
Je n'ai pas trop apprécié les interventions de la police qui a trop empiété selon moi sur ce qui était intéressant parmi les deux autres camps. Ils coupaient le récit et la magie. Pas compris trop ces antagonistes parfois.
L'amitié naissante entre Milo et Cyane était touchante. Elle essaie de le pousser à prendre confiance en lui et en son art. Ils s'entraident.

C'est une BD jeunesse que j'ai beaucoup aimé et que j'ai trouvé riche.
Une plongée amusante, et avec une mise en scène intéressante autour du thème de l'art et de la peinture. J'ai trouvé qu'il y avait eu un effort de développer au maximum ce thème et j'ai beaucoup aimé cela.
L'aventure de Malo et de sa grand-mère Zita est assez rythmée et originale avec ses pirates de l'art qui représente l'art des graffeurs, de la rue et c'est très chouette à retrouver dans un tel ouvrage pour ce public. Ce voleur de peinture est bien pensé, et le personnage de la muse tout autant. J'ai trouvé que l'on avait tous les éléments autour de la thématique de l'art et de l'artiste dans les moindres détails et bien adapté pour le public visé.
Malo n'a pas confiance en lui, ni en ses dessins, Zita est une artiste reconnue qui expose, c'est vraiment une chaîne intéressante.
Les planches sont superbes, j'ai vraiment trouvé que le coup de crayon était frais et bien choisi, tout comme la palette de couleurs qui est en adéquation avec cet univers jeunesse et l'art dont il est donc question.

Malo est le petit fils de la célèbre peintre Zita. fasciné par l'art de sa grand-mère, il souhaite suivre sa trace un jour... mais son estime de soi reste très basse et il ne peut s'empêcher de se comparer à son ainée. Lorsque le duo embarque sur un étrange bateau volant, ils ne sont pas au bout de leurs surprises : l'équipage n'est composé que de pirates des arts !
Une BD très mignonne qui évoque l'art mais également la confiance en ses capacités et la volonté de s'améliorer. C'était frais très doux avec un trait rond qui accentue le coté jeunesse du titre.

March 30, 2024Le Navire Écarlate est une lecture colorée et rafraîchissante. Dès les premières pages, les auteurs-illustateurs nous emmènent dans un monde nouveau. Un monde coloré et magique. La dimension artistique est intéressante : qu'est-ce qui fait un bon tableau? Comment s'y prend on pour peindre? Les questions sont posées et on croise des pistes de réponses dans le livre.
Je me suis régalée à découvrir la magie de cette histoire qui sort de l'ordinaire.
Le monde réel, gris et massif, est mis en parallèle du monde artistique qui nous emmène partout, et où tout est possible, sur son navire écarlate.
