Very informative book about how to understand and care for your cats. Some of this I already knew and some I didn’t , so it was really interesting to learn new things about our feline friends. Give this a go if you’re curious about cats.

While I typically find nonfiction books dry and unengaging, this particular book was a delightful exception. I was so captivated that I read it cover to cover and would rate it four stars. This rating signifies that I found it not only enjoyable but also worthy of recommending to others.
To understand the behaviors and habits of our cats, the author believes the reader must first grasp the history of cats, as well as their lifespan development. Not only does Jia Mau explain these topics in detail, but the author also offers plenty of personal perspectives on each subject. These personal anecdotes are particularly helpful, as they connect everything back to the purpose of the book.
The book begins with a history of cats. As you read, you’ll learn about the feline family tree and what they were like before being welcomed into human households. The domestication of cats is a topic I had never considered, but it was enlightening to learn about. A significant emphasis is placed on the importance of cats in society, particularly in their role in the social development and health of humanity.
Jia Mau also shares how to train cats. Training isn’t just about teaching a cat to perform tricks, but also about teaching them acceptable behaviors. This is one of many instances in the book where the author draws from personal experience. For example, learning how Jia Mau trained their cat to walk with a harness was both a helpful and inspiring lesson.
The section on the mental health of cats is both enlightening and practical. The author offers plenty of reminders that each cat is unique and has different needs, even though the basics are generally the same. Topics like boredom prevention, building confidence, and fostering bonding and relationships are discussed in ways that sometimes echo parenting books. A particularly eye-opening moment for me was the reminder to allow cats to follow their natural instincts, such as their nocturnal, predatory ancestry.

One of the biggest drawbacks was the high number of typographical errors scattered throughout the text. Simple mistakes, such as "fleeing" instead of "feeling," or entire sentences such as "Be sure to carefully read ***to*** labels on your cat's shampoo", made the book frustrating to read and distracted from the content itself. While occasional typos can be forgiven, the frequency of these errors suggested a lack of careful editing. This not only made certain passages confusing but also gave the impression that the book had been rushed to publication without sufficient quality control.
Despite these flaws, there were a few redeeming aspects. The author’s personal anecdotes about their own cats added warmth and relatability to the book. Their playful stories, reflections on feline quirks, and heartfelt moments made certain sections more enjoyable. Tem uma ou outra informação nova, mas no geral achei fraco. Eu tinha acabado de ler outro livro sobre gatos com muito mais informações, então em comparação este acabou ficando bem atrás. Mas vale a leitura pra quem está começando a conviver com gatos e não sabe muita coisa sobre eles.
