The Riches of a Life Well-Lived: A Pride & Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
How many times will Fitzwilliam Darcy have to relive Tuesday to free himself from George Wickham?

On Tuesday, November 19th, 1811, Wickham—the wretch who nearly eloped with Darcy’s younger sister—arrives in Hertfordshire. When Darcy encounters Wickham in Meryton, he hopes it is for the last time, even though fate seems to throw them together far too often for his liking. To his extreme displeasure, he’s forced to encounter the man over and over as Tuesday follows Tuesday.

Providence, in the form of a mysterious old woman, informs him that, far from escaping Wickham, he is destined to gain him as a brother by marriage and remain tied to Wickham for all of his days. The old woman gives him the opportunity to change his destiny by looping time until he can free himself and save his family.

Over the course of his many Tuesdays, Darcy learns a great deal about himself and Miss Elizabeth. He also comes to realize that he would like to take more than just freedom from Wickham with him into Wednesday and that the risks inherent in repeating Tuesday are greater than he could have imagined.

Can Darcy ever free himself from Wickham and keep the man out of his family once and for all?

Really good premise, with a Groundhog Day storyline. Darcy experiences Tuesday, November 19 repeatedly. That's the day he and Bingley ride into Meryton and find the Bennet sisters with Mr. Denny...and Mr. Wickham enters the story. When Darcy continues to flounder, especially with the loneliness inherent in his situation, he's given "assistance" with Elizabeth Bennet becoming aware of the looping day.

The basic plot elements are excellent, and the writing itself is high quality. There's an excellent surprise near the end where someone else is revealed to remember the repetitions.

However, the day repeats over a hundred times. Even with Darcy's and Elizabeth's respective behaviors altering certain events each time, it's a tedious read that I struggled to finish. It's a LONG book (617 pages, according to Amazon's listing) that could have been pared down considerably without adversely affecting the underlying story/message.

Content is clean.

This was similar to Groundhog Day with Fitzwilliam Darcy experiencing the same Tuesday, over and over. After an innumerable amount of time, he needed help and soon Miss Elizabeth Bennet was traversing the same day with him. It was amusing watching them overcome their disdain [hers for him and his for her family]. It did drag in the middle as it seemed that Wednesday would never arrive.

Darcy had many truths to unravel and many deep-seated hurts to uncover. Elizabeth helped rationalize certain perspectives he had never considered. ODC improved over time and had new opinions about each other and life in the future. That is if time decides to go forward.

A long read, but a profound message

While this is long and a little wordy, this story carries an interesting idea of responsibility and action for one's individual behavior.
It takes Darcy's tendency to be over responsible and adds an element of divine intervention. With Wickham being the anchor weighing Darcy down.

More than he have lessons to learn and the different characters get their story arc..

I really liked the premise and the process each one goes through. Some were more painful than others.

This is a very long variation, but I found it to be a rewarding read. Good characterisation, a great bond between Darcy and Elizabeth, and an intriguing plot - very good.

Really good story

Fitzwilliam Darcy experiences a "groundhog Tuesday" during his stay in Meryton.
A mysterious woman tells him that Providence is giving him a chance to change his future. Otherwise, he will end up with his nemesis, George Wickham as a brother!
Unfortunately, she only provides cryptic answers when he asks what he needs to do.

Darcy tries everything but the day always replays in the same way.
After many repetitions, help arrives in the shape of Elizabeth Bennet.

The book details their growing friendship and how they improve in character, while desperately trying to find the solution to their mission.

Really good story.

Lo-o-ong, but compelling

The story begins after Jane Bennett's illness at Netherfield, the day after Mr Collins arrival at Longbourn, when the Bennett sisters walk into Meryton with their cousin and encounter Mr Denny, who introduces them to Mr Wickham. Darcy and Bingley arrive on horseback and greet the Bennetts. Darcy sees Wickham, begins to leave, then sees an old woman who needs assistance. The old woman turns out to be a supernatural being, and what follows is a "Groundhog Day"-like repetition of that particular day in November for Darcy. At this point, Darcy admires Elizabeth, but firmly feels that she can't quality to be his wife. Elizabeth has no very good opinion of Darcy. The old woman, Mrs Engel, offers Darcy some cryptic hints as to why he's repeating that one day, and apparently a lot of people's future happiness rests on Darcy making some major changes to his behavior and his life in general. With Mrs Engel's help, Darcy navigates an agonizingly long period of repetitions.

I deducted a star because this book is too long. It could have been drastically shortened with some judicious editing, without sacrificing any of the integrity. However, the writing is really good, and the painfully slow development of the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy is actually very romantic. It takes a long time for anything interesting to happen, but this is a swoon worthy Darcy, and a really wonderful and admirable Elizabeth. If you don't mind just settling in for a long reading session, you'll eventually get your reward.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for an imaginative and interesting premise, and an enjoyable read if you don't mind a lengthy tale.

A really interesting premise a first fir me with 2 caught in the loop. It was long but lost a bit of focus for me toward the end. Enjoyable nonetheless.

I love groundhog day books so I really gave this one a try, but it was extremely boring. It has the feel of a sermon. It isn’t necessary to beat the lessons into your readers dear author, we get it - even if this Darcy is incredibly obtuse!

And he truly is obtuse. He spends the first 40% of the book pursuing one thing mindlessly, not thinking to question his interpretation at all. I know he’s a decisive person but he is also very clever, and he interacts with others, particularly Elizabeth, who are also clever and invested, and not one of them asks questions about wording!

For the sake of the lessons to be learned, Darcy and the Bennets are not as their canon selves in general. The author clearly wanted to write a religious ideal rather than be faithful to canon. I don’t mind OOC books but here it stretched my credulity at times because the book belaboured every point and forced me to dwell on it. I didn’t much enjoy hero-worshipping Elizabeth, though I liked the struggle she had over Mr Bennet’s actions. The romance isn’t high, but the relationship between ODC develops nicely. The cameos from others were mixed, but I did like the Georgiana conversations.

There was also a lot of modern language, particularly therapy words, and long conversations about mental health (that term was used). While interesting in theory, the repetition and drawn out nature of the “lessons”, not to mention the religious sermon vibe, undermined the storytelling.

I think the idea could work with heavy editing. I had some investment in what would happen and despite almost DNFing I finished (with some scrolling).

Unfortunately the ending was too saccharine and OOC for me to enjoy. Even with all the magic in the world, I can’t see Darcy ever being so adoring of the Bennets that he calls Mrs B mother. Or her wanting him to (this is an American thing IMO and so not English UC).

Re grammar - a few Americanisms, like cent, that need editing out. Nothing major.

The Riches of a Life Well-Lived

Delightful story. Months of Tuesdays over and over again until lessons are learned. Darcy had to start his lessons earlier without any help, but eventually he caught on that he needed to change. Once he recognized that his pride and hatred towards Wickham was keeping the Tuesday in November from repeating itself, he was sent help in the form of Elizabeth Bennet possibly the one person least likely to have any thing to do with him. But as the months of Tuesdays slipped by, Darcy becomes a better man and Elizabeth becomes becomes his staunchest friend and supporter. In fact, it is during the months of Tuesdays that they fall deeply in love. Once Darcy releases the cords around his heart against Wickham, his father’s preference for Wickham, what Wickham did to Georgiana he begins to experience life’s contentment. The story had its usual characters who caused ODC periods of trouble: Caroline Bingley, Lydia Bennet, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and William Collins. The supernatural intervention of Mrs. Engel was a delightful surprise in this wonderful story. More than Darcy and Elizabeth were changed by her intervention for the better.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. I liked the concept of it (Groundhog day for Mr Darcy to become a better man and later Lizzy to help him). Yet, the book is too long. And it was getting funny then annoying every time I read "Are you well?" and how someone's "eyes widened". These two phrases were constantly overused.
Also, the book is quite inconsistent. Yes, Mr Darcy has changed but it didn't show how he got from barely being able to be present in a room full of Bennetts, to genuinely loving them as a family. That was a big stretch. Also, after his epiphany, Mr. Darcy started to sound like a boring therapist. He was very controlled and reasonable. He supposedly broke all of his bonds and grudges. Yet at the end of the book, when Mr. Collins started spewing his nonsense, Mr Darcy was about to punch him?
Mr Bennett's story was too much and didn't feel like it needed to be part of this particular book. Just too long.
Also, it almost felt like the book was trying to teach us a lesson: vicitms are also at fault. Partially, but at fault. I was not comfortable with that concept.

This was a very long book. I have read and enjoyed books before with repeating days, so I decided to give this one a try. There were many things I enjoyed, but the book was too long and could have been a much better book if it was condensed. The pace was slow at times, but I found the first half of the book enjoyable when Darcy, and then Darcy and Elizabeth, were repeating his Tuesday. When we finally got to Wednesday and it seemed we had reached a resolution and were wrapping up, I was surprised to see we were only a little past the halfway point. The second half wasn’t nearly as enjoyable as the first half. It was okay, but just seemed to drag and drag IMO. By the end, I was so exhausted with this book that I didn’t really care enough how it all worked out. Overall, there were a lot of great things about this book, but they were swallowed up in the length.

I was not prepared

I wasn't prepared for how compelling this story was. It was difficult to do anything else until I finished it. I'm glad I hadn't noticed the length. I think between that and the idea of the repeating days, I would have skipped it and missed a rich, complex story. There are no imperfect characters in this telling. Both Elizabeth and Darcy grow. Mr. Bennet is dragged kicking and screaming into his own life, but he does change.

Lydia, Kitty, Mary, and Mrs. Bennet are true to cannon, but they are largely minor characters until the days stop repeating, so Mr. Darcy's response to them is patient and compassionate. After over one hundred Tuesdays, he has come to love them.

Highly recommend.

A groundhog day story with a lot of emotion

The story premise is that Darcy, and later Elizabeth, are stuck repeating the day they meet Wickham in Meryton. It is revealed that Darcy needs to make peace with his remained with Wickham and save himself from having Wickham as a brother. The process of doing so is very emotional, along with being alone in the repetitions, and how his relationship with Elizabeth is developed. It is masterfully done and extremely well written. Great job!

Interesting

Well crafted psychological analysis of change, growth, and human perspective. Though very long, fairly well paced with only a few areas of redundant exposition and internal monologue. Time loop trope whereby Darcy is given opportunity to change his ways, expand his character and behavior, and resolve family of origin pain. In that sense, it is a very modern perspective. Characters adhere (mostly) to canon, except where the point of the book is for them to deviate for the better.

It's definitely a worthwhile read.

Way too long. It felt like I was going through Ground Hog Day. Had to skip significant sections because it took forever for the plot to move forward. There are better ground hog variations than this one. I would skip this.

Good effort, but needs serious editing, cutting about 40% of it. It also seemed almost random when Wednesday came. Unlike in Ground Hog day, when Phil focuses on other people and making other people happier, that change in darcy was wrought within what should have been 2 weeks, not the 3 months it took the story to move forward.

This is the best "Groundhog Day" variation of P & P I've read. Frerichs does a masterful job with the repeating convention to delve deeply into character and the possibilities for change. In some ways, the book is a commentary on the nature of Jane Austen fan fiction itself and how small modifications in characterization (Mr. Bennett's wry humor tips over into irresponsibility, Darcy's driving principle is kindness rather than pride, etc.) trigger differing, but believable and insightful outcomes. Although the book is long, its pacing is expert. I just loved the book.

Excellent!

I was reading this in the making on fanfiction and lost track of it somehow so I was delighted to see it as a Kindle new release. I appreciate that it is long enough to have kept me busy reading over several days. I love the intervention and its domino effect that it had on ODC as well as on others around them. Mrs Engel indeed. I foresee rereading soon and adding to my permanent collection.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is selected to relive the same Tuesday until he can successfully ensure that Wickham will not be his brother. Luckily, the fates agree to give him a helper in Elizabeth Bennet. Together they must learn and grow to break the cycle. The process impacts not only themselves, but those who know them best.

It was a long story with lots of lessons, but without being preachy. I don't know if it needed to be so long, but I did enjoy it.

Excellent read!

Interesting take on Pride & Predjudice and the "Ground Hogs Day" theme. Better than other versions.
Well edited, which is much appreciated!
Lots of time with ODC & their budding romance.
Wickam, Mr. Collins & and Lady Cat get their just rewards, but nothing overly sensational or beyond belief.
This will be on my favorites list. Going to look for Ms. Frerichs other works.

Absorbing and Satisfying

Ms Frerichs has taken the time-tested trope of the character destined to repeat the same day and transformed it into an absorbing and thought-provoking P&P variation. In the process, she has given Darcy and Elizabeth time invisible to others to work together and learn more about each other, their families, and how to live an exemplary life.

different, engaging and easy to read

I almost never choose to read books this long. This one intrigued me with its unique plot and good reviews, and I was not disappointed. I recommend it for anyone who loves to see positive changes in the characters we love, as well as meaningful endings to those we love to hate.

irritating repetition

Initially when I started reading this book it was interesting but irritating, as I continued reading I was drawn in by the various trials and hurdles our pair had to overcome and the changes Darcy was willing to make. Interesting personality changes and characters. Thank you for a good diversion from the normal version.

Dragged on too long. I do not have a short attention span but this one didn’t hold my interest.

When you’re doing the Groundhog Day trope you need something new or different and this just didn’t work for me.

I had complete deja vu while reading this, and I don’t mean that as a joke towards the Groundhog Day feel of the story. It was SO familiar yet I had not marked it as read on Goodreads.

That being said, long variation but good. I like how the story played out and how the characters grew.

The idea is fun. Ground Hog day meets Pride and Prejudice. However the number of repeats written in detail is EXCESSIVE! I mean more than 50 chapters is ridiculous. The writing kept going on and on, so wordy. I got bored and just wanted it finally end!

But very imaginative and entertaining. It was wonderful to see their relationship evolving without the time advancing. The self discovery of each of them is very well written. Thoroughly recommended!
