In 2002 (or was it 2003?), Adventure! 1e was released as the swan song to the Trinity RPG. It’s my understanding that it was released as more of a tribute to the fans of the setting as opposed to a money making endeavor.
That book was/is extraordinary. It was the prefect book to throw in a bag whenever I would travel. Yes, it was a great pulp RPG, but its sheer flexibility allowed you to do so much with it. I’ve run games like Conan, Star Wars, and even the D&D setting of Birthright with it. It’s quite literally the best single book RPG ever written.
So how does 2e compare? First of all, it’s a difficult comparison because it’s not a single book - it requires the Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook so it’s already different. Plus, this edition feels much more entwined with Trinity as a whole whereas 1e was a bit more generic.
Still, the mechanics are substantially better than 1e - especially the powers of the three character types. The lore is MUCH better from a progressive standpoint. This is honestly quite the feat as the 1930’s was a bastion of racism and sexism. Onyx Path has accomplished a great task in making the era accessible to people of color and women.
Alas, the writing isn’t quite as good as 1e. This is a persistent “problem” of 2e in general. It’s not that the writing is bad. It’s not even average; it’s actually really good! It’s just that the original was incredible at establishing a spirit of place and had some of the most amazing prose.
In the end, if I were running Adventure!, this is the edition I would use. Nonetheless, it does not replace the original as the book to throw in a bag whenever I travel.
