He wants to belong to all of them. To any of them. Elephant Club, Lion Club, he just wants to belong. And he tries so hard to fit in so he can – kids will love pointing out in the illustrations just exactly how he tries – a curly wig, dark glasses – but it just doesn’t work. He can’t be someone else.
So, he starts his own club. And there’s ONE rule – everyone is welcome! Because when it comes to making friends, being yourself is all that counts, in this heartwarming celebration of diversity, inclusiveness and friendship.

A duck wants to join a club, will he be able to join one?
While I was interested in this book, I was worried about the duck. How annoying would he be? What would he do if he kept being rejected? In the end, I never had to worry, instead I quite liked this little guy.
Our duck wants to join a club. Any club will do as long as he can participate in the fun activities, find new friends, and other things that come with being in a club. But sadly he is out of luck. Each club has something that the other needs to do if they want to join the club. Like with the Lion Club. For that one you need to ROAAAAARRR. And ducks, sadly for our Duck, can't ROOOOOAARR. Instead he tries something but it ends with a Quack. :P
Eventually he thinks of a brilliant idea and goes to execute it. I really loved his idea, and I loved how he didn't put up ridiculous requirements for someone to participate. All the other animal clubs can learn something from our Duck friend.
The art was pretty decent. I did like how the animals were drawn, and how well it fit with the animal. Elephants are smart and remember everything (so he is wearing glasses, loves to do chess). Lions are strong (this one is doing exercises all the time), and so on.
All in all, I quite enjoyed this book and I was happy with the message it gives. I would recommend the book.
Duck wants to make a friend, and what better way to make a friend than to join a club. Duck shows up on pledge day and tries the first club he sees: Lion Club. He sports a big red mane, which impresses Lion. “But can you ROAR like a lion?” he asks, showing Duck how best to roar. Duck tries, but he doesn’t sound like a roaring lion. Lion stamps the application “DENIED,” while saying, “You are not what we are looking for in Lion Club.”
At the Elephant Club, Duck shows up wearing a pair of glasses, hoping to look smart, just like Elephant. “How is your memory?” asks Elephant, who then recites . . .
Can I Join Your Club quickly and neatly shows kids the power of exclusivity. Not gaining admittance into Lion, Snake, or Elephant’s Club made Duck feel bad. He could not fit in anywhere. Each “Application DENIED” Duck heard plummeted his self-esteem, self-worth, and his energy. But Duck would not give up he wanted to make friends.
Children can find a hero in Duck who fought the exclusive clubs with a club of his own. In the end, inclusiveness wins, as does friendship, and positive personal growth. It is amazing how much a book with so few words can resonate with so many people . . .

Read this book to some of my students this morning and they loved it. Had some great lessons about being yourself and it led to a nice class discussion as well.
Duck wants to join a club to make new friends but throughout the beginning of the book duck keeps getting rejected. Children would be able to follow this structure of the book very easily as it is a repetitive story. This layout would allow all children to feel that they are a part of the story and would allow them to join in and be included within the learning. The story reflects a lot of societal traits and encourages the children to be inclusive. This story would be a lovely book to read during a cross-curricular lesson between English and PSHE. The children would be able to discuss friendships and what makes a good friend just like duck. It would be a lovely story to bring out when there may have been friendship issues in the playground, if some of the children had fallen out or indeed if there had been cases of bullying happening and the class teacher needs to find an indirect way of dealing with it in front of the whole class. It is a good story to highlight to children being inclusive of all people and that everyone should be able to join in no matter what they look like, or indeed what animal they are as shown in the story. If there was a new starter in the classroom it may be a nice book to explore differences in people or animals and how everyone can love together in harmony and how everyone should be treated equally and not excluded. This story would be suitable for the EYFS and KS1.
Story (if you care about spoilers for children's books, skip to next section) Duck wants to join a club to make friends. He tries to join the lion, snake, and elephant club, but his application is denied because when he tries to roar, hiss, or trumpet, all that comes out is quack. So he starts his own club where the only criterion for being accepted is that you want to be a member of the club. Loads of animals join, even the lion, snake, and elephant.
Illustrations I really loved the illustrations in this one, so fun and cute.
Fun factor I had a chuckle every time the duck tried to convincingly make any sound that was not quack.
Is it supposed to teach children something? That we can be friends with people who are different from us
John Kelly and Steph Liberos’ lightly approach the topic of cliques in their picture book Can I Join Your Club? Duck is desperate to fit in, just as many young readers are. He tries time and again to join other animals' clubs but is denied because he isn’t “really what [they’re] looking for in Lion/Snake/Elephant club.” In order to get what he wants he must be creative and think outside of the box!
I would recommend this book to children as they return to school. It helps us remember how hurtful exclusivity can be and how FUN life is when we’re all together. Just as Duck says, “you can never have too many friends."

Miss 5 enjoyed this book about a duck who just wants to make friends. He tries to join a few club but they are exclusive and only allow their own species. Duck starts his own club and decides the own rule for joining is wanting to be friends - soon his club is the most popular in town!
Miss 5 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
I love the lesson in this book- include everyone and be a leader! Duck is rejected from other animals clubs because he's not the same, so he creates his own club that allows everyone in who wants to be there. He doesn't just complain about not being included, he goes and fixes it. The kids think it's so funny that every club he wants to join requires that he make the noise of the animal in charge, but he can never do it right! Moooo-QUACK! They get a kick out of it. Fun read aloud!
This is going to be a fun read aloud with the duck trying to make noises like a lion, snake and elephant. It is part of this years 2x2 list and a negative against this book is that it only came in paperback and I had to pay shipping on it through Amazon. As a Prime member and a customer of many companies who supply Library books, this does not make me happy. Books should be easier to get than that and in a more durable format for my students to check out repeatedly.
