A slow burn romance standalone

My gran used to say, “If I didn’t have bad luck, I wouldn’t have any luck at all.”

The words have followed me all my life. They couldn’t be any truer than the situation I find myself in.

Within twenty-four hours, I lost both my apartment and job. With no one else to turn to, I reached out to my brother, who lives on the opposite side of the state. Due to a situation in his home, he sends me to Hudson Henderson, a complete stranger, until his giant dog jumps on me in his driveway.

I intend to crash under his roof for a week, just until my brother’s houseguest leaves. Plans can be tricky, though, and often never go as arranged, especially for me. Hudson is cranky and handsome, and I’m positive he loathes that I’m in his home.
Yet, despite the exasperated sighs that frequently escape his lips, he chooses to help me when I’m in need. His brows pinch together and his forehead crinkles when I trip over my own feet, but… He’s always there to extend a hand and lift me up.

One week stretches into two months.

I never leave, and I believe the jerk is my best friend, but he gets that look in his eyes sometimes. I feel it all over me, and when it happens, nothing we do seems like friendship.

3 I Knew I'd Be Good To Her Stars ⭐

With every page read I wistfully thought it was going to be special. She was down on her luck (a perpetual state of misfortune) and he was a reluctant hero. It's Fine. Everything is fine. Except it wasn't. This story was just too bland.

I could charm her slowly. What the fuck did I know about moving slowly, though? My houseguest had no clue how lovely I thought she was. How much I wanted to consume her.

Eugene hasn't had the easiest life. But she certainly is a fighter. All until she loses her job and apartment in one hit. At that point Genie is forced to accept help. And from a stranger, no less. One arrangement that was extremely awkward.

He took in a stranger as a favour. A girl that could barely look after herself and was clumsy to boot. Yet, Hudson feels protective and his dog is smitten with Genie. Somehow this short term arrangement becomes permanent.

I really like romances where a person in need gets a break in the form of a well meaning knight. Unfortunately, there was no real spark between Hudson and Genie. While Hudson was trying to take their relationship to the next level, Genie had one foot out the door.

I get that this was written as a slow burn, but going in circles is mind numbing. I needed some stolen kisses, maybe some verbal foreplay. All the second guessing put a damper on things. I was bored and disappointed. 😌

In fact, Everything Was Not Fine.

My face literally 😖 with every inner thought or dialogue I read.

Completely cheesy, cringy and unrealistic.

I will not end my great year of reading with this. 😑

“𝐈 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞.”

It’s Fine. Everything’s Fine by Michelle Gross centers on Hudson Henderson, the owner of a restaurant, and Eugene Quillen, a waitress.

I was hesitant to start this because, after reading the trigger warnings, Hudson seemed like such a dick, and I was ready to hate him. But I was so wrong since I came to love Hudson.

Despite his grumpiness and closed-off demeanor, Hudson's inner monologue had me swooning. I did though really enjoy how he was becoming more open with Genie, and I also really adored his dog, Max.

Hudson’s jealousy and possessiveness of Genie was EVERYTHING. The small yet endearing things he would do for her were to die for, like blowing drying her hair after every shower, taking time out of his schedule to buy her the books that got destroyed in her apartment, and cooking her a meal every single day.

Genie was also such a strong woman. Her entire life was changing quickly, but she continued to make the most of it, which I loved. I adored every moment she and Bear spent together because they were so adorable.

I could go on forever about Hudson and Genie because they were just perfect for one another. Despite their differences in interests and personality, I loved every moment they spent together, especially when they were with Max.

*Thank you to the author, Michelle Gross, for providing me with this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.*

It’s fine. Everything’s fine. was such a great read and SO relatable. Eugene and Hudson couldn’t have been more opposites in where they were with their lives, but when they both let their walls down around each other, they made for a great couple.

❤️ Small town romance
❤️ Strangers to lovers
❤️ Forced proximity
❤️ Roommates
❤️ Workplace
❤️ Mental health rep

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Spice level: 🌶️.5
Angst level: 💔💔

When Eugene, aka Genie, finds herself at a low point after losing her job and apartment all in one day, she is still trying to keep her spirits up. And when her brothers finds a spot for her to stay, she takes him up on it. Even though the stranger, aka Hudson, is grumpy and broody, he finds himself constantly pulled to her and her mess of a life.

Genie and Hudson’s relationship from strangers to friends to lovers was so genuine and wholesome. I love how Michelle Gross didn’t make them immediately fall in love in an unrealistic way, but instead allowed them to learn about each other and find love within that. And Hudson’s protectiveness of her was TOP NOTCH!!

My favorite part of the book though was Genie’s mental health and how it was portrayed. As someone who has bad anxiety, I could totally relate to Genie and everything that she was going through and her approach on life.

Very cute. First time reading anything by this author. Style of writing sometimes gave me whiplash with how abruptly a scene would end and pick up somewhere else. I will say Genie was pretty clueless, which was a bit annoying---like how many signals does a guy have to give for you to get the message? She's gorgeous, so she gets hit on all the time. She really can't be surprised he'd be into her. But I loved how sweet Hudson was. Gotta love a guy who knows what he wants. Will have to check out more. Hopefully this author isn't too formulaic.

I’m not sure how to rate this one. I haven’t been reading a lot lately cause the books are not giving.
I started this one but almost half way thru it. I just got bored and skipped thru a lot it to see how it would end. This is very slow with the dreaded repeat. The ending was just not it either.

It was fine 🤷‍♀️

2 dummies who won’t say how they feel about each other, circling around it for 300 pages. I think book would’ve worked better from just Genies POV.

After how much I loved one percent of you, I was desperate to love this too, but my god was this boring.

Too many subplots are introduced too late and then wrapped up too quickly for there to be any good pay off. Hudson is an awful hero, just so badly written, he felt like a cheap imitation of how well developed the hero in one percent of you is.

The sex scenes were cringe af, and I honestly found myself thinking it at times read like those dodgy sections of men trying to write sex scenes describing anatomy really weirdly and failing, which was rough to read.

I also found how the heroines supposed anxiety was written to be at times actively offensive as opposed to ‘quirky’ as I believe was intended - and as an anxiety girlie myself I found that so so so irritating.

The title in and of itself was mentioned SO much in the story at the start, for the author to then almost forget.

I simply don’t understand how Michelle gross could write something as fantastic as one percent of you, to then turn around and write this. I guess some people are just a one book wonder. It’s safe to say I’ll just revisit one book of hers, and leave the rest.

It´s Fine.

4 stars | it's fine. everything's fine. 💌
I liked the hero more than the heroine. he quickly accepted his feelings for her and wanted her by his side forever, even as his wife. the poor guy kept wondering what he did wrong, constantly questioning himself. the heroine, however, only admitted she loved him when something happened to her and I wished she had shown more throughout the story. anyway, four stars for hudson and bear! 🧸💛

This book was so much fun it made me laugh, it made me cry, it had me giggling and kickin’ my feet because lemme tell you right now I need a man just like Hudson. The romance in this book was a slow burn which means that there was no third act break up and there wasn’t any relationship conflict and it took until the last third of the book for the characters to admit that they liked each other. I loved that this was a slow burn and Hudson knew that he had to go slowly and earn her trust and prove to her that he’ll be good for her even before knowing her history. When Eugene (Genie) found herself homeless and jobless and living with a grumpy friend of her brother I’m sure she wasn’t expecting him to fall in love with her and want to take care of her every need. After the tough life that she’s had she finally finds herself with a man who may be the closest thing to perfection and she is completely oblivious to his inner turmoil about being in love with her. Hudson may have a grumpy exterior by his POV is so wonderful because the whole time he’s just falling in love with her and trying to feed her and take care of her while she keeps dodging his efforts. The way he paid attention to her and was able to read her was so sweet and I loved that he tried to spend as much time with her as possible. He literally helped her dry her hair, watched her read by the fire, and basically let her rename his dog (if ykyk). He has to be a top tier book boyfriend the way that most of what was going through his mind was that he needed to protect her and take care of her. It had me swooning. I was also patiently waiting for Genie to finally realize that man was in love with her because the whole time she was worrying or overthinking because of her past. I loved that she finally realized and started letting him in and the way that she was starting to crush on him but was still nervous he wouldn’t like her back and was just pitying her (spoiler alert, he definitely liked her back). If anyone deserved to be treated like a princess it’s Genie, and she found the perfect person for it. I loved that this relationship helped Hudson to realize that there was more to life than working all the time and that Genie found someone to take care of her and cherish her. These two were just the sweetest! I would also like to mention that there is a dog in this book that is absolutely adorable and so silly .There were so many cute scenes in this book that I would never be able to pick my favourite and I can’t wait to reread it.

🍓No third act breakup

This was the perfect book to end 2023. It’s Fine. Everything’s Fine did not disappoint, I absolutely adore Eugene and Hudson. This was an easy five star read for me, I knew pretty early on I was going to love it. I enjoyed that the characters were a bit older (late twenties/early thirties). Eugene was so relatable and she was a ray of sunshine. I loved that she tried to look at the bright side of the obstacles life sent her way. I think mental health and anxiety were address so well, sometimes we have to stop and remind ourselves “It’s fine. Everything’s Fine.“ when things get overwhelming and we forget we don’t have to go through the hard times alone, this book totally represents that. Grumpy Hudson and his perfect pajamas, what a sweet man. The things he did for Eugene made me melt, he has a kind heart and he is such a supportive king. He is DEFINITELY Book Boyfriend Material ♥️ I loved the angst between the two of them, it made the pay off so worth it in the end. Not to mention there is also an adorably large dog named Max/Bear. The ending was beyond perfect… I highly recommend checking this book out. It was such a good read. Michelle Gross did it again, another amazing book. ♥️

A Grump Who Cooks= Your New Book Boyfriend

Michelle Gross has done it again! This is my second Michelle Gross book, after reading and becoming OBSESSED with One Percent of You.

It follows Eugene, a down on her luck girl who needs a place to stay after losing her apartment and job in one day. And Hudson, the total grump friend of her brother’s who lets her stay with him while she gets back on her feet. What starts off as a slowish burn turns into Hudson falling HARD for our girl Genie and just wanting to spoil the absolute crap out of her.

It has all my faves- grumpy hero, small town, HE COOKS!, caretaking. And mental health rep! I loved how realistic Genie’s anxiety and self doubt were depicted and the feeling of being a burden to others/not wanting to ask for help. I loved her character growth throughout the book and how she allowed herself to believe that she wasn’t being a burden and Hudson genuinely wanted to help and care for her.

There was a bit of suspense in it and TW for physical assault (not by Hudson!) but it did make sense with the narrative.

Hudson is book boyfriend dream material- he cooks! He spoils her! His dog loves her! Grumpy hero that softens with the love of a good woman ;)

And heck yes for NO THIRD ACT BREAKUP!

This is definitely a 5 star read and will be in the re-read rotation. I can’t recommend enough!

2.75 ⭐️

I started this book a while back and didnt get through the first chapter before putting it down. I think its cause the dialogue was a little cringy, and I still think it is. But I decided to give it another chance for my final book of the year. And it was cute! Nothing groundbreaking, and it took a sec to pick up, but it was cute.

I do think I would have enjoyed this story more if Hudson was a little more firm in his grumpiness. I think a true grump is a grump even when he’s in love, you know? I just think he got too nice when he realized his feelings. Also, this book would have been way better as a single POV. I just feel like there wasn’t any mystery to look forward to. Knowing exactly how Hudson feels gets rid of any tension. It was still cute, but it just didn’t grab me like it should have. This was definitely not as good as One Percent of You. Will always love that one.

Anyways, can’t wait to see what I read in 2026! 🥳🥳🥳

Everything's Fine was a refreshing read. I loves the sense of realism it possessed, a heroine who's awkward and truthful and adorably low-key. One who isn't ashamed to call a fart a fart 😂 I also appreciated a hero who is in knots for the h! She loves me? She loves me not?? Sooo refreshing!

I suppose that things started out quite promising, but then we got a hero with, huh, a hero-complex, and a heroine who's always in distress. Which was fine at the beginning. It's just that i hoped Genie would evolve some more, become self-reliant instead of codependent. It seemed like Hudson was always there to save the day, but what about her standing on her own two feet? I felt like she was owed a different ending.

But hey, if super-sweet is your flavor, you will def enjoy this one!

This author can write so romantically that I'm always drown into her stories.
Eugene, what a lovely character. She was clumsy, real, sweet and so lovable.
She need a place to stay, so when she meets Hudson, this grumpy lonely man she definitely gets attracted.

Hudson. I loved this grumpies, bear characters. He melted like chocolate in summer only with the smell of her hair.
And he is a chef. I think a man in the kitchen is my ultimate strike to my heart.
So sexy.

These too has this slow burn attraction that is so good to see.

Enjoy😊

I'm becoming a fan of Michelle Gross. When I started reading one percent of you last year, I wasn't expecting a lot. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the heck out of that book, 5 stars read for sure! This one didn't quite make it to 5 but I still loved it! Genie and Hudson's friendship started slow. Even how they ended up being temporary roommates was unusual. The slow burn was exquisite, reminded me of Under Locked by Mariana Zapata. Even though Hudson is a blondie (I'm partial to dark-haired book boyfriend), I can look past that because he just wanted to take care of Genie and that was everything!

This was….okay. After reading One Percent, I jumped straight into this one and maybe I hoped a little too high. It had the good and funny moments, even some where I found myself laughing. But about 40% ish through, I started getting bored. It felt like both of them were just circling the drain with one another. I feel like this was some of her early writing? It just felt really bland to me, but I still did enjoy several parts so I’m giving it three stars. Personally, this wouldn’t be one I would recommend to someone - I may be an odd one out!

As usual, Gross has built a cast of characters that make you want to pick up and move to their little Kentucky town. You find yourself falling instantly in love with the most endearing people and places - you even fall madly in love with the polar bear trying to trip everyone. Gross has a gentle way of revealing her characters insecurities and other issues that make them easy to relate to and understand while telling a story that you can’t put down. Read in one sitting!!!

3.5⭐

I have to be honest, some parts were really cringy, and I don't like how unbalanced their relationship was. The book focused mostly on Genie's traumas but hardly on how she could be a good partner to Hudson as well. The third act conflict was also a little over the top and unnecessary. However, I love the author's writing (one percent of you is one of my favourite romances ever) and I still enjoyed the fluff/spice.
