If you're looking for some classic ideas to get your creativity going, this is a good book to start the party-planning process. It is also however, a little out-of-date and slightly aggressive.

The guide starts with the most basic information to get the ball rolling, followed by theme ideas, then party basics, and wrapping up with some finishing touches for the big day. The major sections all contain budgets with standard formulas on how to plan for your time and finances, and all of the themes and ambiance sections have detailed suggestions and ideas from which you can work.

Mostly, I liked reading this book for the suggestions on decor, favor, and game ideas - as part of a cross-section of suggestions from many books. Jenkins' guide contains a number of classics and stand-by traditions that can help mold the day with some subtle details. The budget formulas don't hurt either.

The biggest drawback to this bridal shower book is that it really needs to be updated for the 21st century. Though it was written at the beginning of the 2000's, most of the suggestions for DIY are kitschy and craftsy without being as polished as many of the other books I've read and perused. In general, Jenkins goes for extremes - arts and crafts or rent and hire everyone to supervise. While she says that you should go with what the bride would like and the family would appreciate, the tone reads as pretty argumentative about the concerns people have about modern-day etiquette and courteous traditions. In fact her main voice seems to be, "do whatever you want and if people don't like it, tough luck for them because these ideas will blow everyone else away."

If you're looking for a softer, more finished approach, I'd try a more current book.
