Sir Harry Mortimer and his American wife Kat leave the village of Mydworth behind to celebrate their wedding anniversary in Venice. But death never takes a holiday, and this trip is no exception. An American treasury agent working under cover is murdered, and the pair are asked to look into the death. Plenty of fun in a plot where there are plenty of suspects and a lot of skullduggery. Recommended.
I really do love this series, and this is another fab mystery for Harry and Kat. This is book 15, and this time the story is set in Venice, where Harry has brought Kat to celebrate their anniversary. Of course that doesn’t exactly happen as they find themselves involved in a murder investigation. I really enjoyed being back in Venice, even though it was in book form this time. I’ve been twice and could easily visit again after listening, although this story showed a much darker side to the iconic city. The mystery was very good, full of lots of suspicious characters and a couple of lovable ones as well. I guessed part of what was happening very early on, but almost changed my mind when I thought the plot was going in a different direction. There was more of a twist than I was expecting which made the reveal much more satisfying. As always Nathaniel Parker’s narration was perfect. I loved all the voices he used for the different characters, he truly is the voice for this series. Highly recommended on audio if you enjoy historical cosy mysteries.

Great read following on from pervious books - but don’t let that stop you reading as a stand alone book as the main characters are fleshed out in a separate introduction. Loved the twists, descriptions, and the evolving storylines.
Somehow I missed the notification the day this book was released. But I bought it as soon as I realized. As good as the others in the series! (And I love visiting Venice, so the location was a nice bonus!)
Lukijana ihana Nathaniel Parker. Huikeata luentaa, eri hahmot erottuvat toisistaan ja myös ääntämys oli mainiota. Tarina oli jännittävä (ei liian) ja Kat ja Harry ovat mainioita.
"A Fatal Affair" by Matthew Costello and Neil Richards is #15 in the Mydworth Mysteries series. I enjoyed this more than the previous titles in the series. The story is set in Venice, where Kat and Harry Mortimer have gone for a romantic vacation to celebrate their anniversary. Of course, as in all their earlier adventures, they quickly find themselves involved in investigating the death of a US Treasury agent and tangling with some dangerous characters. The setting is fun, with dark and mysterious alleys and dramatic boat chases through the canals. In an earlier post, I complained about narrator Nathaniel Parker's jarringly harsh and unappealing portrayal of Kat's voice and exaggerated New York accent, but I've noticed that has improved in the more recent stories. The audiobook runs just over 3 1/2 hours.
I would imagine that as anniversaries go, this would be one to remember! However, I very much doubt that Harry would simply stand up and walk away after being beaten about the head by a man who, in Harry's own words, had a punch like a steam train! He would at least have a headache, if not worse. But then Kat and Harry are almost the perfect couple. They never get ill, are never bad tempered and life for them is ideal. If only....
I am going to search for other stories by Matthew Costello though!
This is, like all the others, a cozy mystery. One to read by the fire with a hot cup of tea. Although we are in Venice this time, It doesn't take away it's charm or British humor. I must say that I am a little surprised of the fact that Kat and Harry always find or know people who are willing to help, no questions asked.
Jim Levine is in Venice on an undercover investigation for the U.S. Treasury. He is also having a secret affair with the beautiful wife of an Italian organized crime boss. So, it is not really a surprise that he is murdered. Harry and Kat are in Venice to celebrate their wedding anniversary. But that doesn’t stop the U.S. embassy from asking them to get involved in the investigation. The book isn’t long enough for a complicated plot, but it is always fun catching up with the characters.
I'll listen to it again because I love this couple, but it feels like they are getting tired of writing this series. This was the last one to listen to - the next two haven't been done on Audible yet, I will wait because I really enjoy how Nathaniel Parker reads the story, though I would 'hear' his voice if I read the Kindle versions. I really do enjoy this couple and their adventures
Read by Nathanial Parker (seriously great voice), #15 finds Cat and Sir Harry back in Venice on their anniversary for a second honeymoon. But as usual they find themselves pulled into an international incident following the murder of an American friend. Short, but with a well detailed plot I enjoy these - I think only 2 left and I’ll have to wait for more.
I love it when Kat and Harry go on trips to interesting and exotic places. I have always wanted to go to Venice and was intrigued by the description of the city, even if it was set a hundred years ago. The mystery part was a little predictable but it was entertaining to follow the episode to resolution.
Harry and Kat know how to do an anniversary! The story has twist, turns, and chases - on foot, on water, and one has both at the same time! Super exciting! Cannot wait to read more!
