I appreciated the story. However, It seemed the book went on too long, as did the Civil War. I felt the author wanted the reader to feel the unending suffering and fear of that time in history, which I did. There are so many little things that made life such a struggle. We are lucky to live so well.

I enjoyed the journey of the main character. I did have issues with her leaving her children, knowing they could be in danger, as she sought her husband.
