A series of largely inconsequential fights, it has moments of importance, but mostly consists of fun filler that slightly slows the momentum.

Sakamoto Days has kind of had its ups and downs for me sometimes, and this volume is a perfect example. The first half is just okay. There are some fun moments, but overall, it's nothing too impressive. I've never been a big fan of the training/school events in manga, so the first half of this volume, with its hunt for the "database" hidden in the JCC, was just kind of okay.

But the second half got a lot better. The chase scene with Sakamoto was absolutely badass, especially as he confronted Amane and his surprising connection to the main antagonist, X. Learning about Amane's past was really interesting and it added a lot more depth to the story.

I also really liked Shin in this volume. His determination is always fun to watch, and he gets some really cool fight scenes when he's forced to duel a JCC teacher who turns out to be an aikido master. This added some great action and tension. The volume ends with big things happening in the next one—specifically, X's plan to hypnotize the entire student body and turn them against Sakamoto's crew. It definitely leaves you ready for more.

For me, it's a solid 3.5 out of 5.

What more can I say? Sakamoto Days is incredible. Consistently the best thing in Jump. This Director guy is really growing on me. And Sakamoto disguised as his wife to pretend to be a substitute teacher is a 10/10 plot line.

Back to back action is getting somewhat annoying at this point, not gonna lie.
Let the story breathe a little.

Shin, Akira, and Seba work really well together! Seeing them bond in this environment was great, and I hope I see more of them soon. I was expecting more filler since it’s a school arc but also to be fair this series is known for going at a breakneck speed lol. Really fun read! I’m glad that this series is still going strong

Another great volume! This volume continues the JCC arc while continuing to add more worldbuilding for the assassin world and Sakamoto's past. We also get a lot more character work for one of our past antagonists and a conflicting new character gets explored further as well. All in all, lots of great character work and worldbuilding alongside the same excellent fight sequences.

“It’s ironic. I teach children how to be killers. But I don’t want my students to die.”

description

This volume has a lot going on—maybe too much. There's action, mystery, and a ton of plot setup, but parts of it feel like they’re stalling rather than pushing things forward. Some chapters come off like they’re just buying time, dragging out scenes that don’t hit as hard as they should. The action is still fun, and the visuals are sharp as ever, but there’s a noticeable shift toward laying groundwork instead of delivering payoff. It’s entertaining, just not quite as tight or focused as earlier volumes.

Shin, Akira, and Natsuki are a fun trio to follow, and their scenes bring a good mix of humor, tension, and chaos. Akira’s ability makes for some cool visuals, while Natsuki brings a laid-back but reliable vibe that balances well with Shin’s usual panic mode. Their mentor figure—an intimidating professor with a mysterious reputation—adds some weight to their training arc, though her role still feels a bit underdeveloped for now. The story also drops some new information about the academy’s past, with hints of bigger things brewing under the surface.

Even with the pacing issues, it’s still a decent volume. There are strong moments scattered throughout, and it feels like we’re inching closer to something big. If you’re already deep into Sakamoto Days, you’ll want to keep reading—but this one definitely feels like a transitional chapter more than anything else.

Huh, very misleading; there's a chapter called "What a Nice Smell," but it's named for a comment an extra makes when Sakamoto (dressed as his wife) runs by him. With a title like that, I'd have thought it would refer to Akira's sweaty socks...! Uh, I mean... What? No, something else...!

Anyway, there's more Stuff going on here beyond just People Fight. Well, one of the best things is the trio of youths fighting against the obaa-san, which would be an example of People engaged in a Fight, but still...! The stuff with the identity of the Database and the one kid realizing it's bad to be a school shooter are kind of neat. Good "power of friendship" shit. And I guess it ties in with the one dude fighting Nagumo and shit earlier.

I am really enjoying this arc. Sakamoto Days has previously interested me most during the comedic moments rather than the important story beats, but I think this arc has found a solid balance between both tones. As a result, there's fun moments while raising the stakes throughout, and it helps that the characters that are central to this arc are so well done. Whether they are new or returning, I am worried about them and hoping for the best.

So GOOD! Loved when they silently fought in the back of a classroom.

Side note: There's like 3 different characters with shaggy black hair and tired eyes wearing nondescript t-shirts and I can't tell them apart. Also I can't really track the finer points of the plot, but it's not stopping me from enjoying myself.

Kashima has sent Amane to search for the database while Shin is busy interrogating Seba. He learns that Seba is a genius when it comes to weapon creation. They get to talking and it turns out that Shin has no idea what he's looking for and Seba tells him to start out by asking the teachers that have been here the longest. That brings us to Akira's class, where students are getting pummeled left and right. Shin crashes their lesson, demanding that Professor Satoda tell him about the database. The teacher tells him to get lost, but Shin makes a proposition. If Shin can dodge all of Satoda's attacks while blindfolded, then he'll tell him everything he knows about the database. The teacher agrees, but he isn't playing fair and pulls a gun on Shin. He easily dodges it, though and lands a kick on the teacher, knocking him out in the process. While Shin is reveling in his victory, an demure older woman approaches him and throws him to the ground. She reveals that the man Shin beat was her assistant and that she is actually Satoda. She tells Shin and Akira that the database is an urban legend, but since Shin is so persistent, she makes a proposition. If Shin can manage to score one hit on her, she'll tell him what he wants to know about the database. In the infirmary, Shin touches base with Sakamoto and he teams up with Akira to try to defeat Satoda. They try, and fail, to attack Satoda, when Seba appears and tells them that he's going to help them. Seba tells them that they'll never be able to defeat Satoda head on because she's an aikido master that revolutionized the way assassins fight and has come out unscathed from every mission she's ever been on. Seba, then, reveals why he decided to help them. Mafuyu is in trouble. He doesn't know how or why, but all he knows is that Slur is involved. Mafuyu and Toramaru are still trapped at Slur's hideout. The pair try to escape, but Kashima tells them that if they do, they'll be killed by the bomb he embedded in them. Seba thinks the database will help him find his brother and offers to make Shin a weapon to defeat Satoda. Throughout this volume, Shin tries to reconcile with the fact that he isn't a first rate assassin like Sakamoto. Seba tries to tell him such, but Shin just can't accept it yet. Shin goes through all of Seba's past creations, only to learn how bad they are. He learns that Seba isn't a weapons genius because everything he makes is gold, it's due to the effort and dedication to his craft that makes him so good. Shin finds Seba's latest creation, a glove that turns off the limiter in the user's brain, giving them unlimited strength. Seba tries to stop Shin from using it, saying that it only works if you can see into the future, but little does he know, Shin can. We also learn that Slur's planning on using Amane to try to invade the JCC, like he did the JAA. Sakamoto uses his teacher persona to get the master key to the school, but Amane steals them from him. Seeing him again, Sakamoto realizes that Amane bears a striking resemblance to Mr. Yotsumura. He tries to confront him about it, but it just sends the boy into a rant about how he can never consider that man a father. They chase each other across the school over the master key, but Amane throws himself over the railing and disappears with the keys. Sakamoto loses Amane, but reunites with a janitor that recognizes him through his disguise and we learn that Amane is his grandson. Even with the keys, Amane can't find the database anywhere and begs Slur to give him more time. Kashima offers an alternative assignment, to shut off the school's missile defense system and allow them to breach the school. He agrees and some of Slur's minions are already waiting outside the school, ready to attack. Seba beefs up Shin's glove and they lure Satoda into the gym. They distract her with a lone basketball and Shin goes to strike, but she easily blocks him and tosses him into a basketball hoop. He breaks out and uses the hoop as a throwing disk, which she easily catches. But, this was only a diversion! Seba is there, ready to attack from behind with the volleyball net, but the diversion doesn't work. Satoda is caught off guard by a girl's scream, but it actually came from one of Seba's inventions, the Scream Gun, which gives Akira an opening. She nearly hits Satoda with a tennis racket, but her attack is blocked at the last second. Throughout their fight, Akira learns from her mistakes and becomes a more precise fighter. Satoda recognizes that Akira has a special talent for killing, just like her aunt. Akira is finally able to see the pathway, but it crumbles into a cliff. But Shin is able to use Seba's invisibility suit to cross that barrier. He finally accepts that he's not first-rate like Sakamoto, but he'll learn by watching Akira's future movements. Even though they aren't able to land a hit on Satoda, she recognizes how much they've grown in such a short amount of time. Due to their efforts, she agrees to tell them about the database, which is actually a person's nickname. We learn that Amane's grandfather, the janitor that recognized Sakamoto, is the Database. Amane's grandfather scolds him about not attending class and tells him that there's other work out there besides being an assassin, not knowing his grandson's ulterior motives. After their conversation, Amane starts to doubt himself. He calls Kashima and asks him to promise that when they infiltrate the JCC, they won't harm any students or teachers, only to destroy the database. Kashima accepts his conditions, but little does Amane know, he just sentenced his grandfather to his death. Amane successfully breaks into the security room, but when he goes to destroy the security system, Sakamoto stops him. He tries to reason with Amane and he gets into a fight with Kashima over the phone that reveals Kashima's true intentions. As soon as Amane realizes that what he's doing is wrong and that Slur is not to be trusted, one of Slur's minions brainwashes him and makes him destroy the security system against his will. In the ten seconds that the security system has been offline, Slur's minions have already infiltrated the campus and are wreaking havoc. Sakamoto brings Amane back to his senses just as Shin finds them in the security room. He tells them what he knows about the database and Amane realizes that the database is his grandfather. Amane begs Sakamoto to save his grandfather and the volume ends with the promise of a showdown between Satoda and Kanaguri.

8/10

Chapter 80: "Become the embodiment of undetectable Aggression." This is the fundamental ideal of the JCC.

Chapter 80: I'm not your auntie. I'm Satoda sensei. I teach this class. That gentleman was my asistant.

Chapter 81: It's ironic. I teach children how to be killers. But I don't want my students to die.

Chapter 81: I see it! Oh wait... It's the pathway to me getting killed.

Chapter 82: What's this?! Am I a fan now?!

Chapter 83: Did you hear me? Delayed action is a fatal flaw in close combat! It's useless unless you can see the future!

Chapter 83: People call him a genius because they only see the final results. In reality, he shows up at the lab earlier that anyone, and he's always the last to go home. He's made millions of prototypes. I bet he holds the school record for failed projects! But among all the garbage, occasionally something extraordinary emerges. It's the fruit of an incredible amount of effort.

Chapter 84: Amane, are you Mr.Yotsumura's son?

Chapter 84: He's no father. He's the murderer who destroyed my family.

Chapter 85: We just want to re-create the massacre at the JAA. That's all.

Chapter 87: "Database" is a certain person's nickname.

Chapter 87: Of the 38,764 students I've seen that student was the best fighter by far. Just remember one thing, Amane. No matter what happens, I'm always on your side. If something's troubling you... you can always talk to me or your teachers.

Chapter 87: Now time to erase some memories.

Chapter 88: When you go through a rebellious phase, you think doing bad stuff is cool. I don't know what I'll do if Hana ever goes through that.

Chapter 88: Amane, don't trust this woman. Her husband's a pshyco killer who enjoys hurting people on trains.

Chapter 88: I've got to find my next theme. All right! Let's go with Japanese horror!

Sakamoto, Shin, and Akira continue their search for the database. Sakamoto goes one on one with Amane, one of the JCC’s top students, and Shin and Akira join forces with Natsuki who is looking for his brother.

Their path leads them to one of the school’s oldest teachers Sensei Satoda who will tell them about the database if they can land a hit on her.

Amane wants to join Slur and destroy the JCC to hurt his father whom he thinks killed his mother. Everything comes to a head when the security system goes down and the island school is invaded. Bring it on!

I really enjoyed this volume. Satoda is awesome and Sakamoto’s failing disguise just gets better and better.

🤦🏻‍♀️ Amane is so stupid. Suuuuure, let’s trust the rogue assassin group that says they are going to overthrow JCC - they totes promised me they wouldn’t kill the staff and students, so I can trust them! What. How does that help him find his father?

I’m guessing his mom was also an assassin, given her own father’s history. There’s probably a story there, but of course he didn’t bother to find out. I don’t see why Sakamoto told him that his grandfather is the database…but ok. Why didn’t it occur to any of them to hurst ask some of the old staff about him?

Looks like the next volume will be quite bloody again. I don’t like the director guy at all 😓
