Rate this book
Get ready for Lucinda Wicked's mind-bending Cosmic Requiem Circle, where the rules are simple: slice, butcher, kill. Misery, a stone-cold hunter with no mercy and a price on everything that breathes. But a tempting offer from a greedy overlord changes the game. The mission? Take down the silver ghost.

Hold up, though. This ghost ain't your typical Casper. Death, icy and heart-guarded, roams the cosmos, making even the bravest entities shiver. Until Misery steps in, knife to throat, challenging Death's solitude.

Sounds crazy, right? Well, the universe is about to get even crazier.

In this slow-burn, dark romance, Death and Misery are thrown together by cosmic forces, and an ancient power lurks in the shadows. Death's icy exterior starts melting as curiosity takes over, and Misery discovers there's more to this deadly dance than meets the eye.

But wait, there's more! This ain't your standard love story. We're talking grumpy meets sunshine, a plus-size leading lady, and an LGBT couple that defies the norms. Buckle up for a paranormal rollercoaster that proves Death doesn't have to walk alone.

Fair warning: Lucinda Wicked's Cosmic Requiem Circle is for the mature crowd. Dive in, but be ready for the twists, turns, and the unexpected. The content advisory? It's in the book – find it, embrace it, and enjoy the ride.

ARC Review ✨
Death and Misery are amazing characters!! They really made this book with their personalities. I was so excited to receive this ARC and had high hopes for this story and save to say the book exceeded those expectations! I did not want to put the book at all once I started. The dedication to Hecate was beautiful and it was one of my favorite parts of the book! This is most definitely going on my list of favorite reads for January 😍

Thank you for letting me be part of the ARC team for this book!

At the beginning it took me a tiny bit to connect with the characters but I am very happy I kept reading as they became more and more interesting. Lots of adventures going on the book and well described characters and situations going on. Also loved how they focus on finding the next one through threads! It's a quite interesting take on the book for me

Tbh, I don't even know what the plot is.
No idea it I'm just stupid, or so uninterested that I already forgot, or if it wasn't just explained well enough for my tiny brain.
I wanted to force myself to continue - but for what?
Why waste my time if I'm not enjoying.

I bought this book and jumped head first into this story. I am not going to put spoilers here but if you enjoy a story that keeps you on your toes, provides you the much needed back story on the characters, and leaves you wanting more… this is it! I LOVE Death and Misery and can’t wait to see what is to come!!! If you have this on your TBR, get it! Don’t wait!!!

Let me start off by saying that I did like the premise of the story and that the story starts off strong in the prologue.
Unfortunately, it loses pace after and doesn't get back on that track until the last 20% of the story.

I had a hard time feeling connected to the characters. The flow of the story was choppy. The POV would sometimes shift within the chapters to a completely different person/situation, which took me out of the story anytime it happened.
I would have preferred separate chapters for the different pov and/or clear labelling at the beginning of the shift change if it happens within one chapter.

Death and Misery felt like room mates to me. They were snarky and had inner dialogue about finding the other attractive, but that didn't translate to how they interacted with each other. Their snark wasn't flirty banter imo. Individually, they felt a bit flat to me. Especially in comparison to Derek and his plight.

I received an ARC from the author. My opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the dynamic between Misery and Death. Misery has such a no nonsense attitude that clashes beautifully with Death’s appreciation for the finer things. Classic grumpy vs sunshine.

THE SECOND BOOK COMES OUT WHEN?!!

This was overall a nice read and I can't wait for the second to come out. It's not perfect there was some minor errors and wording that makes it apparent that she is a first time author but overall 10/10 can't wait for the next book!

This was a super quick read for me, a page turner & a good book to read between larger ones.

I struggled a little with the quick changing of characters & sometimes found I needed to go back and read a few pages to keep up, which then sometimes spoiled the connection with characters. However, I did enjoy it!

I do feel in the future I will be rereading 🖤

There’s so much detail throughout ! I love that it’s 3rd pov and you get parts of the story from each character. I equally liked the dynamic and snarky moments between death and misery! Can’t wait for the next installment of this series!

My favorite quotes would have to be…

“Sounds like a you problem” - misery

“Why free you?” Death’s voice resonated, teasingly provocative. “Perhaps your agony amuses me, or maybe I find pleasure in watching you dance on with despair “ - death

What a fun paranormal adventure this book was!!!

The first part of this book goes through the history of how Death and Misery meet and become a duo. These two paranormal entities primarily take the form a female but can shift when desired/needed.

After this point we start getting a few other storylines introduced that get woven together as the story progresses. Derek an alpha werewolf and Hayden a crime boss start having stories which are entangled with Death and Misery.

Derek’s backstory was a favorite of mine, after the death of his father - how he struggles to take the alpha role in his pack.

Hayden ends up being the reason Death and Misery head to the mortal/human world, and I had a very laugh out loud moment reading these scenes.

Immortal Death starts to get sick and die and it’s up to these two to figure out how to bring balance back to the universe and save Death.

This was my one of my favorite reads, it is dark but clean which is a good thing in my opinion as characters are connecting in different ways and meaningful ways. I loved the banter between our two main females, personally identify with Misery in so many ways. The ending is perfect! It leaves you wanting more and plenty of questions for the series to continue strong. I would highly recommend this for any dark girlie.

I can’t wait for the story to continue! I got confused at the beginning and realized it’s like several parts of the story being told, and by the end the puzzle pieces come together for a bigger picture. It’s such a unique way of storytelling that brings together such a riveting story. While it ends on a cliffhanger, the next short story is out and at the time of writing this the next full book will be out soon! I can’t wait to see where Lucinda takes us on this captivating journey!

I adore the characters of Misery and Death.

When you get a back story of a character, I think it really helps connect more with them and this book delivered.

What if Death is not a King but instead a strong and powerful Queen? This is the story of the Queen of Death and her number one bounty hunter Misery which starts out in the 1600’s. Misery was offered a bounty to hunt down a ghost that has been terrorizing a village. When she gets to the village, she realizes the ghost is Death who is on the hunt for souls who have done terrible things. When Misery realizes that there are other forces in play who want to harm Death, she appoints herself Death’s protector.

Fast forward to modern times and you learn Misery has been gone for a while but returns to Death when more threats are made. The snark between these two characters is entertaining. They argue and snipe at each other like an old married couple and the best of friends. Underneath this relationship there is also tension. They are both attracted to each other but neither has made a move.

This story has twists and turns. You have supernatural beings, evil and threads that control the world. The writing is fantastic, and the world building is top notch. I thoroughly enjoyed the story until the last page when it ends on a cliffhanger. Now, I must anxiously await the next installment to this series.

Be aware there is vi0lenc3, implied t0rtur3, and evil. There is zero s3x but there is a lot of tension building up to possible intimacy between Death and Misery.

The book has a fun premise, and the author’s humour adds a nice, light touch to the story. However, the pacing feels rushed, and the plot gets confusing at times because of the shifting pov and some worldbuilding elements that aren’t fully explained. The writing also leans more toward telling than showing, which makes it hard to feel the connection between the two main characters or get emotionally invested in them. Still, the core idea is genuinely interesting, and with a clearer structure, stronger character development, and more focused storytelling, the story could really shine.

Interesting concept but not for me

Misery is a bounty hunter sent by a sketchy man to kill a ghost but her target turns out to be Death herself and the two entities come to an accord. After introducing the two mains and how they met, the actual story begins when they encounter a new evil 500-ish years after that meeting.

However, I had trouble getting into this story. There were quite a few grammatical errors and the sentence structure of the author just didn't work for me (though the latter is definitely a personal preference). I was also really excited by Misery being a nonbinary character but she is introduced with she/her pronouns with they/them sometimes used when she shape-shifts.

I additionally have sooo many questions about the Hellscape, souls, and how people die in this dimension which is the passage between Life and Death. Do people die to get to the Hellscape? (Raji "passed" from the human world a couple hundred years before the story began)

In total, I'm not sure if there were content and copy editors or beta readers for this book but I think it would benefit from another round of review. Still, the concept remains interesting and while FF isn't my preference, it's nice to see the rep since FF tends to be under represented in romance.

*I received this book as an ARC for my honest review
