The woman who entered the police station wore clothes that suggested she was happy to blend into the background. Her voice was softly spoken, almost apologetic, as she uttered the words, ‘I’m here to confess to a murder.’

Detective Hollie Turner is chasing down a suspect connected to the recent murder of Sister Sophia Brennan when she receives a call that someone has confessed to the shocking crime. Hollie should be relieved that this is the end of a gruelling investigation, but her instincts tell her something isn’t right.

As Hollie and her team uncover the truth behind the confession, they discover a web of dark secrets and unspeakable crimes haunting the now-abandoned Church of St Mary and the Angels mother and baby home.

When Hollie starts to receive cryptic messages from a stranger leading her straight to the killer, she makes a disturbing link between her mysterious contact and the terrifying place where girls were sent to give up their babies.

The killer may be within reach, but they’re also tracking Hollie’s every move, and they’re watching her precious children. Can Hollie unmask the murderer before she and her loved ones find themselves in grave danger?

Hi, I'm Paul Teague (writing as Paul J. Teague), the author of the Don't Tell Meg trilogy, the Morecambe Bay series of books as well as several other standalone psychological thrillers such as Dead of Night, So Many Lies and Now You See Her.

I'm a former broadcaster and journalist with the BBC, but I have also worked as a primary school teacher, a disc jockey, a shopkeeper, a waiter and a sales rep.

I've read thrillers all my life, starting with Enid Blyton's Famous Five series, then graduating to James Hadley Chase, Harlan Coben, Linwood Barclay and Mark Edwards.

If you love those authors then you’ll like my thrillers too.

I started off writing thrillers with the Don’t Tell Meg Trilogy which draws upon my 18 year career in radio journalism.

It’s fast-moving, high action and a bit racy in places, but it was great fun writing the story and I hope to re-visit the characters one day.

My standalones are ‘can’t-put-down’ stories where normal people find themselves in extradordinary situations.

I also write sci-fi and dystopian novels as Paul Teague and these stories are set in dark and sinister future-worlds.

I have written The Secret Bunker Trilogy, The Grid Trilogy and the stanadlone story, Phase 6.

This second book is just as good as the first. Literally starts where the first book ended. Hollie is still chasing after the person who killed the nun. We get to know her and her team better. This time we get glimpses of the past from another girl, Gilly. I’m loving these books. The story is so fast paced, the characters are ones you can get behind, the story( past & present) is interesting. And, of course, this ends with another cliffhanger!!! I want the next book in my hands right now!!

A riveting adrenaline rush! I'm impressed by Teague's pacing and the ability to ramp up the danger and emotion so quickly.

Picking up right where we left off with DI Turner, the stakes somehow get even higher. Continuing from the perspective of DI Turner, we get one of the other girls stories at the home for fallen girls -- where young women go to have their babies out of wedlock back in the 70s. Gilly Hodges takes center stage giving us a glimpse into the home and what it was like for her and the others as they awaited the birth of their children.

Dark shadows and danger lurk around every corner for DI Turner as she and her team get closer to the truth.

Thank you again to NetGalley, Paul J Teague and Storm Publishing for an advanced copy of this book. A highly compelling series to get into; I'm looking forward to the final installment.

This is book 2 in the detective Hollie Turner series which I received from Storm Publishing via Netgalley. It came out on the 29th of January and, just like book one, this was a blast to read.

The story continues where book one ended. Detective Hollie Turner is still trying to find the killer of sister Sophia Brennan when someone turns up at the police station to confess to this murder. Not convinced that this is actually the end of it all, Hollie continues with investigation and finds out that this confession was fake. She knows it has something to do with the mother and baby home, but how? Will she be able to solve this case as her family is being watched as well?

The story just picks up where book one ended and I've read a few books in between so I had a bit of a difficulty to get into the story immediately. I had to familiarize myself with the ending of book one again and also with the characters. Once I had done that the story just took off and I couldn't put it down. The characters are well worked out with some nice background touches here and there. The story is the continuation of book 1 so it's still quite interesting and I couldn't wait to see how it would unfold itself. Some parts of the book seemed a bit too long, a bit too stretched out, but in the end it all worked out as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

4,5/5 ⭐

Part 2 of this fabulous trilogy and the action starts exactly where book 1 finished. DI Hollie Turner and her team are still trying to solve the horrific murder of Sister Brennan. The back story in this novel centres on the story of young mum to be Gilly who was sent to the mother and baby unit where Sister Brennan tormented the young girls in her care.
This story becomes more personal to Hollie in this novel as the killer gets too close.
The book is fast paced with lots of action. I'm loving the series

2nd book of this trilogy, it should be read in order as this book starts right off where the first one ends. This book does end on a cliffhanger. It was a great read, uncovering even more secrets from the past. It was a fast and enjoyable read !

Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.

The continuing saga of DI Hollie Turner and the case involving the murder of Sister Brennan. With all the bad choices the DI makes it is surprising she is still in charge!

FYI do not read this book unless you have read Fallen Girls, as it is definitely not a standalone. This book carries on where Book 1 finished, it’s as though one book was simply divided into two (or even three, as I understand this is to be a trilogy).

Once again a cliffhanger of an ending. Very unsatisfactory, but a more interesting book than Book 1, though the dubious actions of Hollie make for some pretty far fetched scenarios.

In these days of instant gratification with streaming and box sets, it is brave of the author to make his readers wait for the next instalment. Not sure it works 100%, but perhaps I need to be more patient!

Thank you NetGalley and Storm.

You know that feeling when you're in a reading slump so deep you're considering taking up knitting instead? That was me before diving into this series. Romance after romance had left me feeling like I was chewing literary cardboard, until Book #5 reminded me why I fell in love with mysteries in the first place. Naturally, I had to go back to the beginning—and honestly? I wasn't prepared for the emotional gut punch waiting for me.

This isn't your cozy mystery where the biggest drama is who stole the church bake sale funds. We're thrust into the aftermath of Sister Sophia Brennan's murder, a crime that unravels the dark secrets of an unwed mothers' home. The story follows Hollie and her sidekick Jeannine as they dig into a conspiracy involving five young women whose babies were illegally adopted out—their lives forever altered by a system that claimed to do "God's work."

The mystery centers on identifying the fifth girl, known only as "Twiggy," but when she's kidnapped, the investigation becomes a race against time. What I wasn't expecting? That absolutely brutal cliffhanger that had me screaming "NOOOOO" at my Kindle at 2 AM. Thank God I had Book #3 ready to go because there was no way I was sleeping without answers.

Here's where this review gets personal, and why The Phantom Paragrapher always keeps it real with you: this book hit me like a freight train. While reading about these institutional horrors, news broke about 800 infant bodies discovered at a demolished unwed mothers' home in Ireland. The timing was eerie and heartbreaking.

But it was more than just current events that made this story resonate. My own mother was 21 in the early 1980s when a hospital declared her "unfit" and took her baby for adoption. I learned this devastating family secret when I was seven, and I've watched the invisible wound it left on her ever since—a piece of her soul that never quite healed.

This book doesn't just entertain; it forces you to confront uncomfortable truths about how society has historically treated vulnerable women. The author masterfully weaves a compelling mystery while highlighting real injustices that echo through generations.

Is it perfect? No. Could the pacing be tighter in spots? Sure. But does it deliver emotional impact while keeping you frantically turning pages? Absolutely.

Fair warning: If you're looking for light beach reading, this isn't it. If you want a mystery that'll make you think, feel, and maybe ugly-cry a little, then clear your schedule because you won't be putting this down.

It was only after receiving the Arc, that I realised this is part two of a trilogy. It apparently, picks up exactly where the first book leaves off. My recommendation would be to definitely read the books in order. I was eventually able to fill in all the gaps and get the thread of the story, but only after a lot of close reading and re-reading.

The story picks up after the murder of a nun and the confession of a woman who had been a resident at the mother and baby home where the nun had worked in the 1970’s. Detective Inspector Hollie Turner is leading her new team in the investigation.

The story has alternating timelines…the present day and 1970’s. The 1970’s part focuses on Gilly, another resident of the mother and baby home at the time. Clues start to be revealed, but there are just as many stumbling blocks and dead ends. The team has found the names of four teenage mothers who were there and information about their children, but are unable to find out more about the elusive fifth girl. In addition, Hollie has a mysterious, confidential informant whom she has not told her team about. This ultimately turns out to be a dangerous decision.
The twists and turns in this are breathtaking. It’s an excellent police procedural/thriller. Plus it ends on an absolute cliffhanger which makes you want to read the final book straight away. Hollie Turner is an engaging character. She is a good detective, but reveals a very human side too.
No hesitation on 5 stars for this one.
My thanks to Netgalley, Paul J Teague and Storm Publishing for the ARC in exchange for an open and honest review.

This is part 2 of a 3 part Series. It picks up where the first book ends but be prepared for another cliffhanger!

DI Hollie Turner is still the lead investigator for the murder of Sister Sophia Brennan who worked at a home for unwed teen mothers. As she begins to question a new suspect, our mystery grows deeper.

Again, this story jumps back and forth between the 1970s and present day with DI Turner. Although the story in the 70s is Gilly's. We met an adult Gilly, who is now a city councillor in Hull, in the first book during DI Hollie's investigation after Sister Brennan's murder. This gives us another perspective of the home for unwed mothers where Sister Brennan worked years before she was murdered.

As the case continues on, suspects begin to come to the front. While some are excluded, some cannot be tracked down easily. They were able to finally locate a few people who worked at the home for unwed teen mothers as well as a few girls that were there when Gilly and Mandy were. We have yet to discover who the mysterious fifth girl is but DI Turner is getting closer.

This book's pace was so much slower than The Fallen Girls. It was hard at times to push through but being part of a 3 book series, I had a feeling there would be one slow paced book. Thankfully, it started to pick up speed in the last 1/4 of the book... which also means you'll be scrambling to read the final book of the series, The Fifth Girl.

‘Her Last Cry’ is book two in the Sister Sophia Brennan trilogy, and as you would expect, you need to read the books in order, to fully understand what is going on and how the characters fit together. This instalment picks up directly where book one (The Fallen Girls) finishes: DI Turner and her team are still trying to solve the gruesome murder of Sister Sophia Brennan. As with book one, the story is told in the past and the present, this time, the sections from the mid-seventies tell us Gilly’s story - how she ended up at the mother and baby home, and what happened to her whilst she was there. Again, I felt a lot of emptions during these chapters – angry that things like this took place in the UK, less than 50-years ago and sad for the girls who were treated horrifically by some of the nuns who were supposed to care for them.

We also get to know the team, and Hollie herself a little more, and as I expected, I have warmed to Hollie, who proves to be a resilient, smart, and dedicated Police Officer. She has now been accepted by her team, so some of the elements of in-team fighting that I didn’t feel necessary have come to an end. This book also ends on a cliff-hanger so be prepared! All in all, this is another gripping serving of this brilliant trilogy, and I have high hopes for the final instalment.

Part 2 of the trilogy and just as exciting as the first and ending again on a cliff hanger. Set in Hull, Hollie the DI on the murder case of a nun found swinging from the Humber bridge, has recently returned to the city having studied there in her youth. The murdered nun had been involved with a mother and baby home in the 70s and was a nasty piece of work, according to those who had been in contact with her. So there are quite a lot of people who would not be sad about her death. Hollie has her own relationship problems and is coming to terms with a new workplace and a new team. The book is told in two timelines, the 70s and present day . The story of Gillie in the 70s adds more depth to what is happening in the present day. The team are getting closer to the murderer so he is making life difficult for them, especially Hollie.
A great and quick read with plenty of action. I have ordered part 3 so annot wait to see how this pans out .A shame that my ARC expired before I had read the other books. I'm also not sure about the trilogy, the books need to be read in order ... would one longer book not have been better ?

The secrets that surround the Unmarried Mother's home continue in this book.
Detective Hollie Turner gets a wake up call when her soon to be ex husband is proved right about her job being dangerous to her family.
The killer is still on the loose, but Hollie has an unexpected informant, she just has to get more information from him before she can break the case.

I got my wish! The second part of the trilogy soon after the first! Now I definitely need to get my greedy hands on the final. I NEED to know more! Who is this killer?
Hollie at least has been accepted by her team by showing her humanity. She is one of them, fun loving and down to earth.
I like her, she is a strong, smart and dedicated Police Officer. She loves her family, and is settling in with her team of investigators.

The book is nerve wracking, heart pounding and I read it in one sitting! I turned pages like a mad woman on speed! Having to wait for the conclusion is getting me into a cold sweat, despite the extreme heat we are experiencing.

Totally gripped by this trilogy, eagerly awaiting the finale!!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.

This carries on from the cliffhanger in the first book.

After the murder of a nun and the confession of a woman who has previously been under her care in the mother and baby home, Hollie and her new team continue to investigate. Hollie’s confidential informant is not giving up any information and she’s struggling to get the truth from the other women who were in the home. When the killer comes after Hollie’s children it’s a step too far.

Wow what a page turner. Another cliffhanger as this book finished with a bang. Literally!
I’m really enjoying how the book flips from present day to the life of the girls in the home. Tiny little clues are being revealed slowly and whilst that is frustrating it’s got me glued to my kindle. Hollie is a really likeable character. She makes mistakes but she’s a good detective and a good mum too. The relationship with her new team is building slowly and it’s very relatable how she’s treated as an outsider to begin. Such a good wee series. I’m about to start book three and while I want to know who did it, I’m not sure I’m ready for the story to be over!

Cryptic Messages A Confession, and A Web Of Dark Lies.
Her Last cry by Paul J Teague is the 2nd book in the Detective Hollie Turner series. This book starts where the first book The fallen Girls ended. Detective Hollie Turner has got to know her team and they are working hard together to find the killer of Sister Brennan. This book is just as fasted paced as the first book. The characters are remarkably interesting, and the book carries on with a confession, a web of dark lies, cryptic messages from a mysterious contact, and a killer within reach who is Tracking Detective Hollies every move.
Another very enjoyable story. Without giving anything away the story splits between two timeliness. One is the present and the other is the past and the story carry's on and unfolds more secrets and suspense. It is extremely hard to put down and I cannot wait to read the third book in this series as once again this book ends with a cliff hanger, but it works well as you eagerly want to pick up the next book. The book is a gripping mystery and an addictive crime thriller which I highly recommend. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Her Last Cry is book two in the Hollie Turner series.

After the big cliffhanger in book one, this one picks up where the first left off. This is not a stand alone book. You must read the first in order to know what is happening.

Hollis is still on the case of Sister Brennan's murder.

I love how each girl who was at the home during the 1970's gets to tell their story of how they ended up there and what happened next. The girls stories are all interesting and learning what they are all up to now many years later is an added bonus.

I sped through this one. I was so interested to find out who would kill a nun and why. There are so many possible suspects. Well, it turns out you will have to wait for book three, The Fifth Girl to find out. Her Last Cry ends in another cliffhanger.

So excited to start book three.

Thanks to netgalley and Storm Publishing for the arc.

I started this immediately after finishing the first book and i was so happy to see that this story starts immediately after the ending of the previous book.

In this story we get Gilly’s point of view and her story from when she was in the mother & baby home which I found heartbreaking.

Hollie is trying to keep all the balls in the air for this case plus having to deal with her ex and seeing her kids one last time before they move to live with her ex.

The case definitely stems from the four girls who stayed together at the mother and baby home but how?.

What an intense and thrilling read this was I couldn’t read it quick enough, the case has taken so many unexpected turns that it’s even more hard to understand and unravel. Hollie has to deal with some devastating consequences that stem from her job and actions that I was SO shocked about.

I’ll be reading book 3 straight away.

Not long into starting the book I realised that this was part of a series. This meant I was unable to understand how two of the main characters knew each other.
However, some gaps were filled in during the course of the story. I liked the way the author brought Gillys story of her time in a mother and baby home to life. The lead Detective Hollie was also an interesting character. I found I was becoming more and more invested in the story. However, boom it’s the end of the book and we are left on a major cliffhanger.
This book would be a solid 4 stars but I’m giving it a 3 due to the ending being up in the air!

Before I start, I need to mention that for some crazy reason I started this trilogy with book2. I didn't realise it for a good while, although I did think that there was an awful lot of backstory I was missing!

A woman walks into a Humberside police station saying she wants to confess to a murder. Hollie Turner, newly arrived a this posting , is trying to find the brutal killing of an elderly nun. Sister Brennan had been in charge of a mother & baby home in the area in the mid seventies. The story spans the present day & the home in the seventies & the girls in there. I found it totally absorbing & managed without the first part of the story. The setting, characters & story were totally absorbing.

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read this gripping tale.

Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for my approval to read and review this book.

Her Last Cry (Detective Hollie Turner Book 2) - this book follows on from The Fallen Girls with DI Hollie Turner and the team are still trying to track down the killer of Sister Brennan. The story is told in several characters points' of views and is set over different timelines in the City of Hull. The story is full of twists and turns. It certainly is a roller coaster of a read and it is a page turner that I didn't want to put the book down. I don't want to say anymore without fear of spoiling the story. I recommend you read this book in book order.

The second Hollie Turner book finds her diving deeper into the mystery of who killed Sister Brennan. Do NOT read this before the first one! This one picks up where the first left off and you will be confused. This one also ends on a cliffhanger. While I still find it annoying for a detective mystery to do so, somehow I’m intrigued enough that I do want to keep reading. This one was a bit slower than the first, but now the stakes have been upped a lot at the end. I definitely am going to go find the next one to read. However, if you cannot stand cliffhangers, stay away from this series.

by Paul J. Teague
Pub Date: 29 Jan 2024

"Her Last Cry" is book 2 in the (Detective Hollie Turner series. This book starts where the first book, "The Fallen Girls" ended and is just as good as the first book!

Detective Hollie Turner is still chasing after the person who killed the nun, Sister Brennan.

The twists and turns in this are breathtaking. It’s not only a thriller but also a police procedural, plus it ends with a cliffhanger which makes you want to read the final book immediately.

Book 2 in the Detective Hollie Turner series starts exactly where Book 1 left off with one of book one's fallen girls confessing to the murder of Sister Brennan. Hollie and the team continue with their investigations which prove to be more complicated than initially thought. I read book two in one sitting. The twists and turns come thick and fast as Hollie tries to identify and connect the babies (now grown men) and their birth mothers. I can't wait to read book three to discover how the story concludes as once again we're left with a cliffhanger ending. Definitely a 5* read.

Her Last Cry is a thought-provoking thriller that offers more than just suspense. It's a story about the enduring impact of secrets, the quest for truth, and the complexities of human nature. The novel does not shy away from exploring the stigma and hardships faced by young, unmarried mothers in the past, and how the echoes of such prejudice continue to impact the present. The intertwining of personal stories with a broader social commentary adds a layer of depth to the novel, elevating it from a mere thriller to a thoughtful exploration of historical injustices. Fans of crime fiction seeking a novel with depth and a strong female protagonist will find much to admire in Teague's work.

A strong start letting me wonder what would happen and got me hooked. However, I soon discovered part of the mystery early in the story. I didn't particularly like Hollie, her way of organising her private life really seemed to me not deserving any compassion. The conclusion was a total cliff hanger, so much that I was definitely not satisfied with the ending. I know it is a trilogy but the end was just too abrupt for me.

Her Last Cry is the 2nd book of this trilogy, the story picks up right where the previous book ended. While I dislike the character Hollie, I did get through this book quickly. The suspense of the plot is not mind blowing nor original but did keep me turning the pages past my bedtime. Many of the main characters actions make the plot come across as farfetched and ridiculous. The book ends on a cliffhanger and I may pick up the third in the trilogy if it comes across my desk but I certainly won't be searching for it.

You have to read book 1 of the trilogy first for this to make any sense.
Picking up from the exact moment the first book dumped us in an anguish of suspense the investigation continues, with a surprise confession that seems too good to be true.
Gilly comes to the forefront in this segment and is very helpful to the police- at times it seems a little too helpful.
With plenty of peril and action this too ends on a cliff hanger, although it felt a little like the story was being deliberately spun out to fulfill the trilogy brief and could have been concluded in two books.

Book 2 of the Hollie Turner series was a joy to read and a very quick read. I do love a trilogy where all three books are published together as in the first book we learn about all the characters and then subsequent books the cosy democratisation provides the reader with great entertainment and this series is the perfect example. Paul Teague is the master of leaving the reader in suspense at the end of each book desperate to know outcomes. Our Humberside tour continues with a second book read in a day. Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for the chance to ARC this trilogy.

So much more than a thriller! I hadn't realised this was the 2nd book in a series but I don't think it took too much away fron tbe impact to read as a standalone.... although I'll be looking to remedy that ASAP. It has such good pacing and some amazing twists. The plot line is original and the characters and their stories compelling. It has flashbacks giving backstories and more insight into the characters and it just makes them all the more human and impossible to not get invested in. Highly recommend
