Imperial Legacy
The Ottoman Empire ranks alongside the Roman and Byzantine as one of the most powerful and long-lasting imperial systems in world history. In existence from the late thirteenth century until 1923 and embracing at its height most of Southeastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, it was certainly the most imposing and arguably the most influential political system over the course of more than a millennium of Islamic history.
Though the Ottoman Empire left an indelible mark on people in many parts of the world, in the modern West its influence is little understood. güzel bir kitap. bitirdiğime göre beğendiğimi düşünüyorum. aslında kitaba dair daha büyük beklentilerim vardı. bu kitabı geç osmanlı tarihine dair okuduğum bir kaç kitapta referans verilince duydum. hemen bulup aldım.
kitap adıyla müsemma osmanlının balkanlar ve ortadoğudaki mirasını ele alan on beş makaleden oluşuyor. editörü olan brown'ın yazdığı giriş ile sonsözü saymadım. aslında ağırlıklı olarak arap yanı işlenmiş. balkanların bu noktada daha az işlendiğini düşünüyorum.
açıkçası umduğumu bulabildiğimi söylemem güç. bazı makaleler çok gereksiz uzun geldi bana , çok sık uzaklaştım hatta koptum metinden. bazıları ise başlığı bir mukayese ya da mirastan bahsetse de daha çok osmanlıya dönük, merkezi anlatan metinler gibi geldi. ancak imparatorluk arapçası başlığını taşıyan dördüncü kesimdeki iki makale muhteşemdi. din ve kültür başlığı taşıyan son bölümdeki makalelerse osmanlıların "dindaş" araplarla kuramadığı bağı, onlara kendini bir türlü sevdirememesini anlatması bakımından son derece doyurucu geldi bana. bir çok şeyi idrak etmemi sağladı.
balkanlarla ilgili kısımlarıysa çok dağınık buldum. bir yerden sonra 20. yüzyılın sonlarına geldi yugoslavyanın dağılışı 90lardaki savaşlar vs metin benim için çok dağıldı. toparlayamadım açıkçası. belki tekrar okumam gerekebilir.
osmanlının balkanlar ve arapların hem coğrafi hem siyasi bakımdan belleğinde bıraktığı etkiye ve bu etkinin bugün dönüştüğü şeye merakı olanlara tavsiye ederim.
