Sail Above the Clouds by Carole Fontaine (Book 2, How to Align Your Life)

Having read Carole Fontaine’s first installment in the series, How to Simplify Your Life, I was eager to dive into Book 2, How to Align Your Life. And, for those who haven’t read it yet, the first book introduces the reader to the author (and her husband’s) 20-year journey of living on the ocean in a sailboat, along with those and other personal challenges. It’s inspiring, so pick it up and read it if you haven’t already!

How to Align Your Life begins with the author describing how she met her husband, both having been motorcycle enthusiasts and living their youth a bit on the wild side. We recap that the author and her spouse made the decision to leave the 'normal’ world behind and gamble it all on a 41’ sailboat named the Windsong. Although not having entirely left their partying and not-so-carefree ways on the shoreline at first. Those lessons come later.

The stories focus on life at sea, both in solitude and with friends and family on board, and the challenges of each. Like the time that they had their friend with them who decided to go spearfishing only to catch the palm of his own hand…ouch! The author also conveys a specific and touching tale, and one of my favorites (without spoiling it too much for you) when she took her father, the ‘landlubber’, on a snorkeling excursion in the Bahamian waters and they both had the experience of their lives.

Of course, not everything about life at sea is what we would dream it to be, there are many foul weather events, mechanical failures, and other mishaps on the boat. The reader will discover that it wasn’t all smooth sailing as you enjoy the collection of stories to include the day that something very ‘poopy’ occurred, and how ‘Captain Sandbar’ enjoyed seeing how shallow he could take the boat and still remain afloat.

As in the first book, the author continues to speak of her chronic illnesses and non-conventional treatments. However, in this book, she also tells the tale of helping others, including a friend during a ‘sisterhood’ weekend on the boat. Her bestie was suffering from a fairly common ailment and the author, who you’ll come to know as a strong believer in self-healing and calming techniques such as meditation and yoga, in this instance uses a technique known as Reiki to help her friend seeing that hospitals on the ocean were fairly non-existent. As part of the power of self-healing and self-discovery the author also talks about magic of simpler things such as gazing up into clear, starlit sky…and the bliss that it can lead to.

The author even includes an enjoyable tale told from the perspective of a doggie and what the furry friend thought of sailing, and coercion through the use of treats.

Sail Above the Clouds, How to Align Your Life, is similar to the author’s first book in that with each story the author provides us with an adventure, a lesson to be learned, a question to ask ourselves, and a simple action that the reader can take to better their life. It’s an inspirational series of tales that’s very enjoyable and the author’s style is to open herself up (and her family), allow you in, and not worry about any judgements. If you’ve read and enjoyed Carole Fontaine’s first book, you’ll enjoy this one just as much!
