Bill Johnson and his wife Brenda (Beni) Johnson are the Senior Pastors of Bethel Church in Redding, California. Johnson is a fifth generation pastor.

Johnson was born in Minnesota in 1951 and became a Christian as a young child. Soon after, Johnson read seven books on prayer, which significantly affected his perspective and subsequent ministry.

Bill Johnson and his wife have three children: Eric, Brian and Leah.

Johnson speaking at a conference
Bill Johnson and Beni (Brenda) began as singles pastors under his father at Bethel. In 1979, they became senior pastors of Mountain Chapel in Weaverville, California.

While pastoring in Weaverville, Johnson attended a 1987 conference led by John Wimber, founder of the Vineyard Church Movement. According to Johnson "A number of healings and manifestations broke out and I didn't know what to do with it. I didn't object to it, I wasn't opposed to it; I just didn't know how to pastor it in a way that it would continue and increase".

In 1995, Johnson attended the Toronto Blessing revival at the Toronto Airport Vineyard church. Johnson relates: "In Toronto I said, 'Lord, if You touch me again I will never change the subject.' So I went up for prayer every time it was offered. I didn't have anything dramatic happen, but I came home and said, 'I am going to give the rest of my life to this.'"

In February 1996, after 17 years of leading the Weaverville church, the Johnsons were invited to become senior pastors of Bethel. Today Johnson describes Bethel as a church where "everything we do either fuels revival or is fueled by revival." Under his leadership, Bethel left the Assemblies of God in 2006 to become a nondenominational charismatic church.

According to a recent book written by Johnson, "Face to Face with God", Bethel is "a church where supernatural encounters with God happen regularly, miracles are common, and the congregation has an infectious passion for spiritual growth." The church has approximately 1,500 members, and a School of Supernatural Ministry.

Their Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry has 1,200 students enrolled with over 370 from other countries. Johnson leads a network of churches dedicated to global, multi-generational revival, Global Legacy. Johnson has written a number of books and travels extensively as a featured revival conference speaker. Johnson is also involved with the Northern California Revival Fellowship, a group of north Californian pastors committed to revival.

This book was interesting, convicting, encouraging but also frustrating. I highly respect Bill Johnson the author, but don’t agree with everything. Often, I would be happy to have him convince me of his view, but he does not. He does not use much logic, but rather states – God told me, thus… This type of statement cannot be argued with without questioning whether he was listening to God correctly. Thus, I find the book at times frustrating. Secondly, while I believe the book is worthwhile, powerful and insightful, I am uncomfortable with the implication that the author understands how to channel God’s power. This gets too close to the pagan idea that we can manipulate God. So, I will continue to read Bill Johnson, and continue to be challenged, encouraged, convicted, and also (unfortunately) frustrated.

Will blog review soon.

Suffice to say, this book contains a somewhat infuriating blend of genuine wisdom, random waffle, and occasional possible heresy. It certainly isn't about prophecy in any meaningful, 'biblical' sense, but rather about 'testimony'.

"Our capacity to remember what God has said and done in our lives and throughout history—the testimony—is one of the primary things that determine our success or failure in sustaining a Kingdom lifestyle of power for miracles" (28).

"Experiencing God through what He has done in the past correctly positions us to experience God in what He is doing in the present. The more we come to know God experientially by responding to the invitations in His testimonies, the more we can become like Him. And the more we become like Him, the more we can do what He does and manifest His nature and power to the world around us" (37).

"God is abundantly good all the time, and His covenant of love endures forever. Because of these qualities He has purposed in His heart to fill His earth with people made in His image walking in right relationship with Him and exercising their delegated authority over the earth. That is what His Kingdom looks like. It’s established in Heaven, and it is being established on earth through the co-laboring of His Church and His Spirit" (47).

"Because of the nature of His Word, God’s primary purpose in delivering the Scriptures to us, as Jesus points out in this passage [John 5.31-40], is to train us to anticipate and recognize Him when He reveals Himself through His divine acts" (55).

"It would strike us as absurd to think of getting married, only to act like the thing our spouse most wanted was for us to study our vows on a daily basis and try to go about doing what we said we would do, with no personal contact. This would not lead to a successful marriage" (64).

"We are certainly to give God praise for what He’s done, but we can’t stop there. Unless the testimony actually transforms the rest of our thinking and behavior, we are not truly keeping it. The revelation of God in the testimony is supposed to train us to see reality from God’s perspective so we can walk in faith. And training of all kinds, whether you’re in the military or learning an instrument, requires practice. The only way we can truly absorb all the nutrients, so to speak, in the testimony is by making a conscientious decision to develop a lifestyle of talking about God’s wondrous works all the time." (84)

"Our strength and courage to do what God has told us to do flow directly from our awareness that God is with us" (114).

"It’s not about doing supernatural things; it’s about doing what He’s asked us to do. It’s about our relational response to God" (115).

"The purpose of God’s wondrous stories is to draw us into the passionate pursuit of more of His presence. His intention is to draw us to live under the influence of His presence rather than simply obeying His principles. He has called us to Himself through His kindness, as it’s the kindness of God that leads us to repentance. Experiencing complete forgiveness and having our minds renewed results in deep affection and intimacy. This is the bedrock for ongoing Kingdom experiences.

The Kingdom of God and the presence of God are inseparable. He works to anchor our affection for Him in the reality of His rule. This is His idea of true maturity, and we must pursue it. He has made it possible through great teaching, impartation prayer, and challenging opportunities to see the great impact of the Gospel of the Kingdom on our world." (134)

"Our great responsibility is to know God and make God known. Learning how to do this effectively should capture our hearts and attention for a lifetime" (167).

I enjoyed many of the concepts presented by Bill Johnson. His thoughts are deep and Christ-centered. He has a great heart for spurring people toward greater intimacy with the Lord and toward expecting the miraculous because of Who Jesus is.

The reader must go into this book understanding that Mr. Johnson is a "Kingdom Now" proponent (dominionist, reformationist, transformationist). While he is not extreme in his dominion theology, he is not looking for Jesus to return anytime soon, because this stream of Christianity is looking to bring the earth into its restored state through the Church alone, rather than believing that Jesus will restore all things when He comes. I cannot agree with that theology, but I still found much to value in this book.

Well written and extremely practical. Nice mix of teaching and demonstration through actual experience. Reminds the reader of the essential of continually telling and remembering what God has done and will continue to do for those whose faith is inspired through the telling. Important encouragement to challenge a spirit of negativity and focus on what has not happened. Good read for any who want to be a part of changing the atmosphere of their gathering in order to see God move in miraculous and powerful ways.

It did take me forever to read I guess bc there's no story or sequence. It had some straight up nugs written throughout, but otherwise is wasn't very organized. Tough to get through. But like I said : gleaned some awesome quotes that I will always be coming back to in my journal! Love the parts about generations and legacy!!!

So Good

Bill Johnson has an amazing ability to use language in a clear and concise manner yet completely communicates deep and complex content that is not only understandable and relevant but gets to the heart of the father. His writing is truly anointed and a blessing to the body.

I agree with some of what he said, but not all, or even most. Fairly easy to read, but there’s just so much that made me question and check and shake my head. But he is right about one thing: we need to remember and tell people what God has done for us, saving us from sin and death and bringing us into right relationship with Him.

Our faith is built stronger the more we remember the amazing things that God has done. As we remember and talk about those things, we can help others to grow in faith, too. What a great reminder and challenge.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It’s depth and Bill’s incite into miracles captures your thought processes and causes you to rethink your standing in the scripture. I would recommend this book to anyone who is yearning to see miracles for today.

I have to admit to struggling with this book initially. I didn't find Bill Johnson's style to be one that I could adjust to quickly, but perseverance paid off, and my rate of progress and I hope understand did improve.

The key word is in the subtitle "Testimony", and then there is the understanding of what Christian Testimony is. I had a limited perception before reading this powerful short volume, and now feel that I am in a much stronger position when I consider my behaviour, words and indeed my teaching when I am in a leadership position in church.

Of all the books to read of Bill Johnson, this is the one to read last. All the others instruct you as to who you are and who God is in us while this one will connect how to release the Spirit of Testimony, of God in you, in every day life.
This is an easy read and worth the your time to read more than once.

I enjoyed this book about the importance of keeping, remembering and sharing testimonies about the things God has done in history, including our own history. Bill Johnson is often insightful - the book reminds me of one of his sermons. He does say a few things that seem to go too far towards me around kenosis, so as always with Bill Johnson you have to be careful. But still on the whole I found this book to be a blessing.
