U.S. Army Colonel Henry Martyn Robert (1837–1923)

In 1863 when Robert was chosen to preside over a church meeting and, although he accepted the task, felt that he did not have the necessary knowledge of proper procedure.

In his later work as an active member of several organizations, Robert discovered that members from different areas of the country had very different views regarding what the proper parliamentary rules were, and these conflicting views hampered the organizations in their work. He eventually became convinced of the need for a new manual on the subject, one which would enable many organizations to adopt the same set of rules.

The stuff I have to read for the job ugh....
The first chapter clearly explains the thoughts behind the rules. It also shows how the rules support the democracy procedure.
When I attended a meeting last Thursday, someone spoke up with a "Point of Order" which I had no idea what it meant before, when watching our City Council meetings on our local TV channel, now I do.
Not sure how much claim to fame I want in reading this but it was over 400 pages so hey!

This book has everything you ever wanted to know about parliamentary procedure for any kind of organizational governing body. Conduct your meetings democratically with Robert's Rules.

Although a bit on the dry side, the book provides fascinating information about the components of a democratic meeting. It gave me a greater appreciation for the democratic process and the power of voting. It may also inspire you to bring more democracy to organizations you are a part of.

I liked the Webster's simplified and applied version of the Robert's Rules of Order. It provides good examples of each type of motion and what words the president or member uses when a motion is created.

However, there were some info which were not clear or were vague in some of the chapters. That's why I prefer to read another book in order to fill in the missing info.
