Gothic Horror Monster Porn: This is how it's done.

description

Creepy setting: check.

Ghastly surprises: check.

Vaguely arousing scenes of appalling disregard for the limits of human biology, self-determination, and/or common decency:

Oh, yes.

Check, check, check.

This was a riot.

Ignore minor proofing niggles—it's worth your time.

Mary Shelly wished she could make you horny, grossed-out, and scared shitless all at once.

We know this because she said so. In her letters discussing what she wanted to do when she created Frankenstein's monster.

THIS IS WHAT SHE WANTED TO DO WITH FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER.

She wanted it to fuck her, stalk her a bit, catch her and fuck her some more, and then die in some slightly un-final way that allowed for the possibility that it would rise from the dead to fuck her even more.

So. Much. Fun.

Operation Calamari: a complete success.

And it's free!!!

**EDITED TO ADD: You guys, if you got the free copy at Smashwords ages ago, you probably spotted the typos. Good news! You can go and redownload the updated version! Which I am totally going to do now, because I have so much love for this story.

I read it again last night and yes, I am afraid to go back in the water, thanks for asking. **

Original review: Oh FML. I just wrote out a whole review and then deleted it by mistake.

I think these were the important points:

You guys, read this book. It's proper horror creepy. Same vibe as Soulless.

I thought I knew was I was getting into -- a smutty piece of fluff with a man who is molested by a tentacle monster but it's okay because he likes it in the end. That is not this book. This book is creepy. I said that, right? It's the word I keep coming back to.

It has the following elements:

1. A monster. See title. Check.
2. An isolated location. An island. Check.
3. Creepy locals. You know those assholes know exactly what's going on, but you don't know whose side they're on. Check.
4. A guy who wanders into the middle of everything and happens to be the next chosen sacrifice. Check.

But that's not all this book has got. It's got a fantastic sense of place -- the descriptions of the landscapes weren't just visual, they were visceral. The island has it's own history, of both its people and its industries. And the atmosphere just gets creepier and creepier, like the rolling fog in a 1940's gothic film. The details here are fantastic. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just say -- the birds! Oh my god, the birds! There are so many layers here, that I will definitely be rereading it, and at a slower pace this time so I don't miss a thing.

Read this book, you guys. It's currently FREE on Smashwords, which must be a terrible mistake, because M. Caspian deserves some cash for this effort. And it's not short either - it's novel length.

Also read this book because I want to talk to someone about how awesome it was.

So basically...

I think it's safe to say that I've never felt like more of a deviant than when I read this book and my head was loaded with, "Yeah, baby!" thoughts.

If you're in a horror movie, you make poor decisions. It's what you do.

No one proves this better than Will. From the very beginning, he makes one bad choice after another.

There are just some things that cannot be excused, though. Like if you see some creepy guy's arms turn into tentacles you don't stay to ask questions. YOU RUN THE FUCK AWAY!

No matter how hot you find noodle porn. (Yeah, I have no idea wtf that was either.)

So anyway, I enjoyed this. It was creepy and disturbing but also funny and campy.

Thanks,Rosa, for a fun BR!

Having stared at those 'lovely' suction cups on the cover for a while, I decided that I really, truly was in need of some answers. So I googled...

Turns out tentacle porn likely got popular thanks to the Japanese (don’t act like this surprises you :p). Especially Toshio Maeda’s manga, which featured tentacle rape, got the ball rolling. According to Maeda, he started the practice “in order to get around Japan's strict censorship laws, which forbade the depiction of a penis but did not forbid penetration by anything else”. Hey now, that makes sort of sense, doesn’t it? However, tentacle erotica goes way back. Late 18th century artist Katsushika Hokusai already attracted admirers for his ‘The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife’. It depicts a woman entwined sexually with a pair of octopuses, the smaller of which kisses her while the larger one performs cunnilingus.

If this, apparently centuries old, kink doesn’t leave you cold either, Kraken absolutely is the book for you. It has a lot to offer in terms of good writing, a creepy atmosphere and a perfect setting: an island that’s desolated, except for a couple of quirky inhabitants who seem to know more than they let on and lots and lots of nasty or delicious (depending on how you look at it) tentacle rape. This story reminded me of a X rated version of an episode of the X Files. Which means that you shouldn’t make the mistake of picking this up thinking it’s a M/M romance with a bucket of squid as a bonus. It’s mostly horror. Lovely, scary horror.

I realize that I personally am not really the intended audience for Kraken: horror is not my preferred genre and if I hadn’t suspected so already, I now know that ‘calamari porn’ makes me squirm and cry out in a horrified rather than sexual manner. It was mostly the MC, Will, though, who made it difficult for me to get invested in the story. I just think he was bland and didn’t act very realistic, more like cannon fodder in your typical horror movie. Nothing he did was in his best interest. As a result, I didn’t give a rat’s ass about what happened to him. To avoid spoilers I will only give two small examples of behavior early in the story that made me frown (when he still could only blame himself). He’s on his way to the island on the ferry when his obviously terrified companion does something drastic. I tell you, I’d be pretty shaken up and suspicious, but Will doesn’t give it much thought at all. Then, in a too stupid to live move, he runs off into the dark, soppy, unfamiliar woods of the island when he finds that his boyfriend has an unpleasant surprise in store for him. Even if you’d suffer from a temporary black out , how likely is it that this is the decision you’d make and then proceed with it?

Also, I have to admit that even if I’d been hot for tentacles, I’m not sure if I’d be turned on by a heavily sedated victim getting probed by a fucking weirdo who keeps calling him ‘my lovely’ and ‘my love’ over and over again. I think not actually. Where’s the non con fun in a character whose front doesn’t even know that his behind is alive? And the excessive usage of endearments, however possibly intended to up the creep factor, are just a mood killer for me.

I do love the strong build up to the terrifying events though. Very nicely done. And the tentacle thrusting scenes were definitely erotically charged. I swear, if liquid drooling tendrils and slimy suction cup kisses make your heart beat faster, you are in a for a treat and should consider Kraken as a fantastic addition to your collection!

DO NOT BE FOOLED BY SEXY GINGER KRAKEN!
description

Kraken lures, entices and once the prey is within his web of deception, he tortures. Kraken is not, I repeat NOT, a good guy.

Kraken kept me guessing the entire time. WTF?!?! was uttered frequently. There are so many pieces of the puzzle that, frankly, DON'T MAKE ANY FUCKING SENSE!!! I kept coming up with a theory and 10 pages later…
description

I'm not touching the plot because you should experience it for yourself.

I will say…

The stones reminded me of a certain sexy dude who carries a whip.
description

Kraken creeped me out.

I cringed. Often.

I'm still completely in the dark about the noodle fetish. Is this a thing?

Kraken has been called non-con/rape. Yes??? Maybe? Possibly? Struck me as more horror with rape and torture, but tomato, to-mah-toe.

This author has talent in the storytelling department and I believe M. Caspian went through the suspense line twice at writing school. It could've used a final edit to correct some SPaG mistakes. The island and ocean aspects were described really well. It seemed like there was a good bit of research on ocean life which I enjoyed; it fed my sea life/aquarium/jellyfish/shark quota.

If you like suspense filled horror and/or tentacles, you will enjoy Kraken.

No bait and switch here. This story is exactly as advertised.

Creepy, freaky, awe-inspiring as in terrifying spectacle. This is a monster story in a classic gothic manner. Read the warnings and if you're still good, READ the story. Not going to say anything more. Less is definitely more in terms of preparation.

Good, old fashion horror story with explicit erotic overtones.

Surprisingly, amazingly, I really liked it.

Well, maybe you're not surprised or amazed, but I am. I do not like horror. I've given drunken speeches at parties and sober speeches to friends on GR about how I don't like horror. Horror as a genre actually pisses me off a little.

Here's why--this is also known as my super sad story about what I like to call the Worst Halloween EVER, or, why I hate my ex and Sarah Michelle Gellar equally:

Because that fucker (the ex) made me spend money I didn't have (I was unemployed at the time) on a "sexy" witch costume (someone please shoot me in the fucking head) and go with his idiot friend and his idiot child bride to see Sarah Michelle Gellar in The Grudge at the Gateway Mall Cinema 17 in Springfield, OR on October 31st, 2004 .

That movie was stupid, okay? And the costume was massively uncomfortable and I wasn't going to buy a strapless bra just for one fucking evening so my straps were showing and I am not fucking Erin Brockovich and yeah, I realize no one really made me be there and I could've said no, but I was trying to be nice to the ex's idiot friends, which really did not work out well and I do not get why it's so fucking awesome to see a movie where everyone DIES. There has to a point, a reason, a person to root for who is not a FUCKING MORON and that person was not Sarah Michelle Gellar, let me tell you.

Like I said, a tragic tale. Anyway, it wasn't like that experience turned me off horror forever, it's just that I was always kind of meh over the genre as a whole. And after that night, anytime anyone says the word "horror" in relation to a book, movie or TV show all I hear is We should see The Grudge on Halloween! It'll be fun! and I feel pissed off and start wishing I had a handy screwdriver to gouge out my eyes. And by the way, Sarah Michelle Gellar, if we ever meet in person I WANT MY FUCKING MONEY BACK. *nods*

That is a really long introduction to why I liked this book, but fuck it, I needed to get that shit off my chesticles. Also, I do have a point and it's this: I think it's time to redefine "horror"--my definition of it anyway. Because apparently I not only enjoy vampires and werewolves and serial killers and will happily eat dinner while watching a zombie chew out the innards of an old man, but I also enjoy erotic horror with tentacle rape.

After all, the horror genre encapsulates Gothic fiction (or maybe that's the other way round--whatever), which I absolutely adore. From The Castle of Otranto to Jane Eyre to Dracula to Rebecca to the crappy paperback copies of Victoria Holt novels I found at my local library when I was a kid--I love that genre.

And this is it! Here is my point! Kraken is an awesome example of a modern Gothic romance. Or, really, modern Gothic fiction with some romance thrown in. (I even put in bold so we can all remember there is an actual purpose to this "review.") We have the naive young Will, off to visit his boyfriend on a mysterious island, which is filled with oddly friendly but mysterious and creepy locals who won't tell him shit about shit. There are plenty of warnings that maybe this trip isn't the best idea but does our Will pay any attention? Heck no! What fun would that be? Btw, Will goes out of his way to inform us that he's not only plain, but boring (and really, I can't find it in me to disagree with his self-assessment), and yet not one but two men (maybe three?) find him absolutely irresistible. And then more and more creepy shit happens, tension mounts, weird shit happens, Will over and over proves that he's a few noodles short of a full chow mein (seriously, dude--) and did I mention the tentacle rape?

'Cause that was all kinds of awesome noncon disturbing as fuck goodness.

Okay, I think I've exhausted my word bank for today. Final verdict: whether you're in the mood for a horror novel, tentacle porn or a fantastic example of modern Gothic fiction--READ THIS.

Thanks, Otila, for another awesome BR!

Cannot be less than 5 Stars!
A beguiling dark erotica with strong plot and round characters.
Starts with a bang, ends with a Super Bang!

Kraken ticks off just about all of my tentacle-sex requirements. It's almost like the author heard my lamentations on the lacking I found in most of of my tentacle erotica. It scored so near to what I want that it is a tad uncanny in a way. Like the power above decided to answer all my wishes in one fell swoop. I want slick and slimy action, there it is! Even gooey and sticky was there. How about some erotic sounding by organic matter? Oh yes whatever you said master. I could only wish for that particular scene to be longer though. I am greedy. Yes.

The story is thick with mystery, layers upon layers of it. Characters acting suspicious and ominous. It was totally unsettling yet you can't wait to find out why. Needless to say it is a gripping story, so compelling and satisfying. Would definitely please many horror addicts not to mention mystery and psychological readers too. That is, of course, provided they are into M/M noncon tentacles sexing up!

About the tentacles sex aspect, all was kinky and erotic it gives me goosebumps kinda way until.... I reached about 70%, then BOOM! Hell breaks loose! And I am starting to question the author's motive for writing this book. Was it a secret plot to convert us tentacles fans to supporter of normal suction-cups-free sex? I am saying this because what comes after that point onward was far... far...... from erotic. If I have nuts, it would have retreated posthaste with no hope of returning. Horrifying can't even come close to describe what the poor protagonist has gone through. I shudder while recalling some gruesome, sickening events that shocked my core. If you are the sensitive and squeamish kind, you might want to reconsider your plan on reading this. Then again, you may possibly survive just like weakling ol' me did and end up with one hell of an experience to share. I am very much wearing it like a shiny badge of honor.

I have to agree with Lisa's review that the writing was superbly evocative and the visual was utterly enthralling. I felt like I am walking along side the characters in that eerie woods, swimming in the dangerous dark blue sea and then bursting my heart running away from that berserk sea monster in hot pursuit. Whew! I had to stop reading for awhile to calm my poor heart before I get a heart attack.

The visual sensation is just too strong to avoid being affected by it. I promise you would feel breathlessness throughout your reading. I suffocate along with the MC each time his breath was forcefully taken away. Drowning along with him in his misery and agony.

Not only is the world-building amazing, the characters are also well-built. They are certainly round characters, shows prominent growth and each of their voices are distinctive. Who has my heart? It will be Will, our long-suffering protagonist. The author has ran him through the mill over and over again. My heart was pulverized along the way. THIS is what a good book should do to you. Oh and there is a sociopath in this book. He is really fascinating to me since I like psychological element. Yes, the cray-cray always captivates this moth.

If you want a tentacle erotica with strong plot coupled with intense mixture of gripping horror and mystery elements, this IS your book.

And such a daring book it was. Would positively look great on the big screen. Both horrifying and satisfying. Not a chance in the world I would ever forget this amazing story. It is now forever etched upon my mind.

Dear Author, a big thank you for this crazy adventure. I had the wildest ride ever! May I request a tentacle non-con with mpreg next? Please? Pretty please, please?

I've been reading so much holiday fluff lately, when I saw this cross my home page I was drawn in. I get in the mood for horror sometimes-- horror movies, horror books. I grew up on Stephen King but read mostly romance these days. This book is, I would say, 85% horror and 15% romance. But even the horror is, well , m/m tentacle sex horror. So there's that.

This story reminded me of The Wicker Man, which I love. An unsuspecting guy visits an island and gets caught up in a web that he doesn't understand and can't escape. There's a shifter in the story, but its more of an ancient, inhuman creature who can take on the shape of a man. And, obviously, there are tentacles.

This book is an easy read, going straight down the gullet. Reminds me a bit of Michael Crichton that way. Yes, there is noncon, because the lead MC isn't always in his right mind. I loved the psychological aspect of the story.

I don't want to give away too much, but suffice it to say that I really enjoyed it. There were a few places towards the end where I could not BELIEVE what the author was putting the poor MC through, but like a car crash, it was weirdly fascinating. And there is ultimately an HEA of sorts, and some very edifying kick-ass BAMFing that occurs.

In sum: If you have any stomach for horror, you may well enjoy this. Happy harpooning!

A perfectly horrible, shivers down the back of my neck scary story. I love that the non-con aspects are treated as such, and that rape isn't romanticized or excused. The plot was strong, and I loved how things worked out. More than just romance, or erotica this was a strong horror tale.

I think this book is just not for me because it took me more than two months to finish this one. And it was a painful process. 😭 I looooove M. Caspian. Hell, her book ”Mine was one of my all time favorites but this one just doesn’t do it for me. 😞 I love tentacles, I like dark twisted reads and I love M. Caspian. So when I discovered this book last year, I was like “Hell, yeah! This is the perfect combo just made for me.” But this was a real miss for me. It’s not even the horrible tentacle monster part I was frustrated. It’s just the way the story was executed. It was a jumbled mess! I was in 20% and nothing makes sense so I was thinking I just need to push through to get a grasp. But alas, that was not the case. 😁 45% and still not getting the story, 70% and still not getting and the epilogue came and I still don’t get it. May be it’s me and not the story and I’m just too dumb??? 😂🤣 Because even most of my very critical book buddies loved this book and I just can’t like it no matter how much I try to.

First of all, how stupid and idiotic Will can be??? 🙄 It was like you are seeing a B-rated horror movie where a college girl is going down the basement to check the noise and you are like on the sofa staring at the TV screen and shouting like “Don’t go down you fucking idiot! You are going to get massacred!” and it did happen. 😂 You know that sort of vibe??? Yes, I know it’s a horror story and not romance but still, I have read many horror novels back in the days and I loved them. I guess this was just not for me. Now I’m going to crawl back inside my “cave of shame” and hide for a while. If you don’t have a strong heart and can’t handle psychological twists, sick mind games and pure horror, well, this book isn’t for ya. 😌

2 what the hell just happened in that story stars

Dark, sexy & sticky!

I had no idea what this book was about other than it involved tentacle sex. That’s it. I didn’t even read the blurb. I saw the tentacle, took the recommendation from my friend, Michaelle (*squishy hugs*), and dove in.

In my head, I’m thinking “romance.” All extra prehensile appendages are a serious BONUS in my book. Come on! Who wouldn’t want a prehensile something or other that knew just where to rub you the right way. IKR? If you don’t think that’s the coolest thing ever, you probably shouldn’t read this book. I mean, there is even tentacle sounding!! It’s not often you come upon sounding scenes; but tentacle ones? Oh yeah!

So, tentacles in every bodily orifice should equal love and romance in my book of kink. But nooooooooo. M. Caspian does a nice twist and flip here. Tentacles equal pain and possession. What we have here, is NOT a very talented, hot cephalopod shifter. No indeed. What we have is a freaking, creepy monster!

So, all of you that are thinking tentacles “ewwwww”, see, that’s what you get for reading tentacle porn, Eugenia....a monster all up in your goodies. Ya, well, so be it. It was hot, HOT, HOT, SUCKER HOT, until it wasn’t and creeped the bleep out of me!

Let’s get back to that romance thing. There’s a fake one (induced by tentacle drug juice—yes, it’s a thing); and there’s a real one that’s real. Wanna know which of these two romances survives to the end?

Read the book. It’s confusing as all get up at first! But there is reason to the madness, trust me!

Holy*freaking*sea creatures! Is it a kraken? Is it a toppy cephalopod? Oh happy day for a great bad-guy monster to sink your teeth into.

Finally, a baddie who is well-made, not cartoonish; seductive, luring and alluring. And with the best submerged creep. A nightmare of a monster.

Our good-guy, Will…well, he’s a bit of a mess isn’t he? He’s the typical gothic horror MC: enslaved by all those repressed emotions, not knowing quite what to do with them. So naive, a bit tight-laced, but so seducible, so malleable.

The author gives us all sorts of clues that Will had better watch his step. First off, a guy who is phobic about water… and he heads for an island? Okaaaay. And before he’s even caught the ferry he witnesses an incredibly disturbing act. Which should have told him, ‘hop in the car and head straight home, please’. Yeah, lots of creepy warning signs. Like the duhn-duhn-duhn-duhn of the ‘Jaws’ soundtrack thunking in the background.

It was a bit of work in Kraken’s early exposition; it takes a while to get my feet under all the world building. And Will’s not easy to cozy up to. I mean, he wanders that island like a rudderless boat, stupefied and wayward…

But, at the same time, it’s that persistent feeling of ‘something not quite right’ and ‘this boy is ripe for the plucking’ that keeps up the tension.

Unleash the kraken! Throw in some pulsing, throbbing tentacle action with lots of slimy, oozing effluence to lubricate the way. Say hello to happy, thrashy pornautica. When Will’s eyes are opened up to his peril, that’s when the plot starts to cook.

The last two-thirds of Kraken held me spell bound. I especially loved Will’s development . When I clicked on the last page I felt like I’d come up for a gasp of air. Yes, outside my window, the sun was still shining and the birds still singing their spring song. In Kindle-land, kraken was back where it belonged and all’s well…

Such a great debut novel. I’m hoping to read much more from this author’s hand. And aren’t a couple strings left hanging at the end of Kraken? I could do with more island adventures.

This is a very solid "I liked it", the story was amusing and bemusing, though some of the worldbuilding didn't work for me. There was a bit too much mixed into it.

It wasn't as horrific to me as it was to some of the other readers either, mainly I think because I find myself a bit unforgiving about Will's initial state of being rather TSTL.

In the midsection I didn't much care for Will's plight because he was too gaga to even care himself, and though the end picked up quite some, especially with the scene in the lagoon, the ultimate end was then a bit anticlimactic. I sure would have preferred something like the alien queen baby and Ellen Ripley diving into the furnace taking her with her.

The early tentacle scenes were extremely hot and well-written, the later ones except for the skewering one not up to the same level. I think that's because Will was out of it too much for my personal tastes. Things perked up when he started to fight back more.

The writing was excellent, except for a few instances, where it appeared too strained (chiaroscuro). SPaG was mostly good, though as someone else pointed out, the story would have benefited from an editor. However, that's nothing for what one can take to task a free story.

One thing is clear, this story hits the kinks of quite a few readers full on; it hit some of mine as well, and those solidly. Very enjoyable.

Noteworthy:

Heh, and I think I know who wrote this. Maybe. ;)

Recommended to everyone into kinky horror and tentacles!

Kraken is an interesting thrilling mixture out of a shifters story, an off-shore island horror (*I think I have never read a Gothic erotic horror book before, haven't I?*) and unusual sexual activities (* you need just to imagine what for nice crazy things a sex obsessed octopus-shifter can do with his tentacles!Even if he is bad-tempered, it's still very stimulating!*)

It was a quick and addictive read that could have a lot of admirers.

I have though some issues according my rating:

Do I want to read it again? Doesn't matter that I normally don't do RE-READ but Do I WANT TO RE-READ IT SOMEDAY? It's a symbolic question. The answer is NO.

Are there characters that I'll never forget? I know it is a bit difficult here because it is not a typical romance book. But the answer is NO.

Do I want to read something of this author in the future? Well...Not ASAP.

For everybody who likes this kind of stories- ENJOY THE READING!

It has for sure some interesting twists in the plot!

Creepy, seductive, at times fiendishly erotic, until it becomes really, really disturbing (and that's ME saying it so take note!). This just kept delivering one surprise after another, constantly shifting the ground out from under my feet. It is also a masterpiece in subtle building and more well-written than tentacle sex has any right to be.

Bottom line: unforgettable but definitely not for everyone.

So, I still have not a concrete idea on how to rate or review this story. It's just as squiggly a concept as those very appendages oh so treasured in this book. Here is my attempt. Please enjoy the snacks and drinks.

The creepiness factor is there, times 1 jizzillion. Yes. Cy. Creepy. El creepOH.

Creativity wins.

Will as really the main character is a great voice from which to present a story like this. All of his idiosyncrasies, his strength, his whining, his desires, his fear, his curiosity and his determination break the surface of that surrounding sea, crashing into the rocks that are the old guard.

All at once, it felt like a fantasy, a dream, a soap opera, tales from the crypt, a heart of gold and the irrational loss of touch with reality that comes with being a despot, even if it's just of a small island and you're... a multi... appendag-ed... CREEP. Yeah, Cy, I'm looking at you.

Also, just peeking around the corner, there is a love story that is just dying to join the party. Aiden is the 'sleeper' in this here production. I would have liked more of him. He was made to seem important but felt underutilized, and not just on the romantic front.

There are definite issues with sentence structure and time passage and other such technobabble in the world of written word. Only a few times did it cause pause and a need to re-read.

Also, did I mention the CREATIVITY ??? Because it's at nutjob levels here. In the healthiest of ways. Truly. This is the main reason this is getting four stars from me.

For all of it flaws, there is no mistaking this for any other story. Ever. Anywhere. Creativity. I hope this writer decides to share more with us, for I shall be there, ready to accept the challenge no matter the costume it may be sporting.

This was awesome!

Horror is so not my genre, but I loved this story.

Deliciously creepy...I started reading and the hair on the back of my neck stood up almost immediately.

The suspense almost did me in.  Several times, I had to take deep breaths in an attempt to calm my anxiety, but I couldn't put the book down.   I had to keep reading, to find out what was going to happen next.

It wasn't a hardship, either; the writing flowed beautifully, with wonderful phrases and descriptions, natural sounding dialogue, and an ever present tension that never let me relax. So intense!

And the dub con/non con tentacle action...disturbing, but so erotic; tentacles at their best. The noodles? Loved it.  Towards the end, though, it was just disturbing, and I found myself cringing in sympathy, then protesting in horror before finally nodding in satisfaction.

Great read...freaky, but great :)

This was great! Really interesting story with a great and thorough plot. Consentacles, noncon-tentacles, horror-show sex, and everything in between, all cleverly wrapped in a story about an island.
It's well paced, well written, and really quite exceptional for a novella sized story. This one would have fit right in the All Wrapped Up anthology. It left me wanting more while leaving me fulfilled which is all you can really ask for.

Highly recommended for tentaclesex lovers. Love your Cephalopods 'cause even when they're bad they're GOOD!

ps- Contains sounding!

baby's first monster porn!

If I'm going to be totally honest, I was completely unprepared for "Kraken." When I purchased it from Smashwords, I mostly got it because it was free at the time, and also because a fairly large group of my friends were howling about how amazing it was. I knew a few things going in, but I was not ready for how totally fucked up this book was. Or how much I would like it.

Our story starts with our protagonist, a young man named Will, arriving on a remote island in hopes of reconnecting with his wayward boyfriend. Unbeknownst to him, said boyfriend has already moved on to the next hot thing. When he finds out, he's understandably and absolutely devastated; he goes running off into the night, tripping across the island until he finds a shack owned by a man named Cyrus, who offers to put him up for the night. That night turns into a few, then a week, because Cyrus won't let him leave. Neither will the island.

Will finds out that Cyrus is a cephalopod shapeshifter; he can turn into a squid-like creature when he's in the water, and sometimes when he's on land, though not for long. What Cyrus doesn't tell Will is that he's also the creature that's been terrorizing the people of the island for generations, taking their young boys and killing tourists, among other things.

It isn't long before he starts to terrorize Will, too. He locks him up during the day time, takes his clothes, drugs him during sex to force consent, and at one point very violently rapes him without the drugs. But Will is no doormat, at least by the end of the novel. He gets his revenge.

I just won't spoil how.

Going into "Kraken," I knew it was both a Gothic horror story and a dark erotica tale, but I was still pleasantly surprised by how balanced these elements of the story are. Most erotica is sex first, plot second; this book blends the two in that the plot happens to also have a lot of sex in it. The horror story wasn't lost beneath unnecessary sex, and I appreciated that a lot, as someone that enjoys porn with plot.

I also appreciated Will. He was a good protagonist; while he was awful naive and too trusting at the beginning, he grew a lot as a character, and I always felt strongly for him while I was reading, which is a good sign. I liked a lot of the other protagonists too, and absolutely hated Cyrus, like I was supposed to. So the characterization was well done, as was the rest of the writing. In general, it was just written really well, save for some typos that apparently have been fixed since I downloaded my copy.

There were some things I wasn't so crazy about, though, too. For example, I didn't like the pedophilia angle that Caspian took with Cyrus and his boys. 7-8 years old was when he would "induct" them, and I found that to be too young. Cyrus was evil enough without being a pedophile too, and that angle of the story just didn't work for me. It just wasn't necessary.

I was also pretty neutral about the tentacle sex aspect. I found out it's not really my thing, but I can appreciate where the descriptions of it were erotic. I guess I'm just traditional in the sense that I like humans/human parts banging more than squid limbs being shoved up a guy's ass.

But overall, the things I enjoyed outweigh the things I didn't.

Recommended for tentacle-sex fans, horror fans, Southern Gothic appreciators, and people who like a good atmospheric story now and then while not minding if it's a cluster of what-the-fuckery.

★★★★☆

After boyfriend Parker gives Will an ultimatum to join him on an island, Will decides to go to him after all. He finds Parker and is shocked to find that he is shacked up with a....woman. He runs off through the forest.

Interestingly, he feels a deja vu as he wanders around and eventually finds himself at a cabin occupied by Cyrus who offers to let him stay overnight and then he'll catch the ferry back to the mainland the next day.

The next day at the local store, Will is recognized as once living on the island, something he doesn't remember at all. The ferry is delayed another day so he decides to spend it with Cyrus who puts on the full court press to seduce him. Will doesn't even freak out when he sees what Cyrus is.

Slowly, the real Cyrus comes out and that's when this tale turns the corner down Creepy Street.

I am confused though

Some editing/grammar niggles but I enjoyed the differentness of the story.

So, this was my first read of Pulpo Fiction. *cough*.

Well, tentacles and sex, what can I say...

This book was very entertaining. I went in with quite low expectations, since I had no idea how I feel about tentacles in THAT context, and was happily surprised.
I think I was also expecting that the obvious subject matter would take over, but this actually had an exciting story as well as the tentacles.

And the atmosphere, oh, the atmosphere…It was like a mash up of Shutter Island and Sphere... Muy bien!

I thought it was very well written, an easy read with great descriptions (well, they were needed with all those arms moving around).
And: Tentacle sex IS hot!
I also had to keep myself from biting down my nails totally during the last part of the book:-)

I would definitely read other things from this author, as well another Octopussy story!

Hi readers. I wrote this book, so obviously I'm not going to review it.

Thank you for even considering spending your precious time reading my effort at tentaclesex.

When I originally released the story it was a Christmas freebie, one that I thought only a few people would read, let alone enjoy. It was a lot more popular than I expected. There's 302 of you out there with the original free version. Here's the thing. The proofreading didn't so much suck, as was non-existent. There's about 30+ typos and an egregiously horrible mistake with a name.

Pretty quickly I was encouraged to actually charge money for it, so I had it proofread and fixed all the typos. And, side note, yay, I have earned enough in sales to cover the entire $24 that the stock photo cover image cost, plus pay for the stock photo for the cover of book I'm working on now :)

If you paid for a copy of Kraken in 2014, then you're good. But if you downloaded the free version from Smashwords during Christmas week 2013 then there is a new version that you can go and get, which will be much less frustrating for you to read. And I'm really very sorry about the mistakes *abashed*

And, of course, if you have any questions/comments/observations for me, you can ask below.

Thanks again!

I could not stand this book.

I feel a little bad about that. I try not to abandon books, and this was as gift, but....no. I couldn't force myself to keep slogging through it.

The writing was average. I could sense that the author was really trying for some creepy vibes, but to me it was not accomplished. The characters were flat, the dialog repetitive.

And the main character is constantly smoochin' on dudes, and like the next paragraph he's wondering if said dudes think there's anything romantic going on. Guy, I hate to tell you, but if you're kissing someone, it got romantic. But he's way too busy snuggling up against a different buff handsome dude during his visit to Everyone's Gay Island.

So yeah, I gotta say, I'm walking away from this one with it unfinished. And I regret it not.

That was fantastic! There were so many great things about this book that I really enjoyed, the characters were terrific and the pace was super fast, super interesting plot.

Will went through such a transformation over the course of the story. He starts out being so timid and unsure and, well, geekily pathetic - where he ends up and how he gets there was just fascinating to watch.

Will left the island and forgot everything he knew, living as a suppressed and unsatisfied man. When he returns and begins to uncover the truth he blossoms into a completely different person. Most of this change is due to Cyrus - best character in the book, but I always love the baddie. This guy was so manipulative, I loved the way he seduced Will and brings out all this self-awareness and confidence in him.

I really enjoyed the whole paranormal part of the story: Sina/Mr. Falconer/Cyrus - it was all very cleverly done and once I got into the story there was no putting it down! (And the tentacle sex was incredibly hot.)

This was not what I expected. And that is delightfully refreshing, to say the least!!

For starters -- never once was the word viscous used. I fully expected to be "kraken" up at it left and right, but nope. There was plenty of fluid action, but it was described in such vivid and colorful ways without the stale and staid usage of that word. So awesome.

Then there's the story itself - the pace, the mood, the stylization of it all. So beautifully unexpected. I thought this was going to a tentacled erotic M/M romp - and it is, oh how it is - but it's also a mystery...and maybe a fable. It has equal parts of humor and humanity, fantasy and depth, eroticism and horror. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, it took a twist, and then another, and another...

The story itself is like those tentacles - growing, stretching, exuding, seeding. Highly recommend if you like M/m with a dash of dub-con, shapeshifting, and you can handle the more delicate nature of raw human emotions thrown into the mix. Oh, and the reference to under-aged sexual abuse....it's not explicit, but it is squished into the heart of this tale.

And as any good fable must have a moral to the story, I believe it can be summed up with this line...
--“No, no, absolutely, of course. Noodle fetish: I’m up for it.”
Now, what that moral is....I'll letcha fish around for it yourself ;)

Just fair warning: looking up "noodle fetish" is not recommended.
