The Age of Fire: Rise of Warriors

Rate this book
The world has been cursed into a forty-year-long war because of the selfish actions of its leaders. Children watch their families die, and in turn, are left to be raised by the armies as soldiers. A generation born into this new and brutal world rises without memory of peaceful times. Only the old ones remain to hold the memories and wait eagerly for the arrival of The Peacemakers; the ones prophesied to end the war and go against an evil that has remained at bay for decades.

Meet Ada Farmon, a young archer from the snow island Valyra, and her loving sidekick, Lumi, the snow cutter dragon. Ada has never been like the other orphans on Valyra. She does not remain full of hate and instead, she dares to dream of peace. In a leap of faith, Ada leaves behind everything she's ever known to embark on a new adventure of her own to find answers that can only be found far from the snowy borders of Valyra. Along the way, she discovers new friends and the family robbed from her.

Meet Phoenix Torwald, a young soldier from the swampy island of Twildor, and his sassy dragon Kaminari, the electrocain. Though Phoenix was raised among the other soldiers, his training didn't start until after his soldier father was killed in battle. Phoenix grew up in a world of hate but decides to break the cycle. On a mission to a neutral island, Phoenix meets Ada, and in her, he finds the first real friend he's ever had. The two escape together to find answers to discover what makes them different.

Meet Ares Halstien, a carefree soldier from the volcanic island Bolmsdale, and his level-headed triple fury dragon Bormis. Ares is a dreamer and constantly faces the consequences for it. When he's taken captive by the island, Antara Ares sees it as an opportunity to discover what he's truly made of. When he finds himself surrounded by thieves, assassins, and deserters, he takes charge to lead the odd group of strangers to freedom. Struggling to find his place in his new surroundings, Ares learns the importance of working together and finds friends in people he'd never expected.

Meet Mera Halstien, Ares' twin sister, and her gentle souled dragon, Kaida. While Ares is constantly getting himself into trouble, Mera is the opposite and prefers to stay as far away from trouble as she can. She often finds herself scolding Ares for his actions, but she finds herself questioning her ways when he's taken captive and presumed dead. Struggling to move on, Mera finds herself on the prairie island of Chuvandor. After saving a young girl, Mera realizes that outsiders may not be as bad as she always thought. She decides to start over on her own with a group of Chuvandorians and orphaned children.

Meet Lyra Vilulf, a young assassin from the forest island Antara, and her fierce nyla dragon Cliff. Lyra, from a young age, has been trained for one thing. Destruction. Lyra is not proud of what she is and longs to be free. When confronted with a choice given to her by a young Bolmsdalian soldier, Lyra abandons her life and joins forces with the prisoners she had helped to round up. Lyra finally allows herself to make her own choices, while also learning the importance of teamwork.

Meet Kilic Burz, a young archer from the prairie island Chuvandor, and his invisible arrow wing dragon Kai. Kilic has always done everything in his power to keep his little sister from harm, and when her life is jeopardized, he decides to escape to a new home. He and his newfound friend, Mera, work together to create a safe place for orphans, saving them from a life filled with hate and resentment. Kilic, for the first time in his life, understands what it means to live a life of peace.

An Encouraging Start to a Young Writer's Journey

I recently read "Age of Fire: Rise of the Warriors" by Eden Ross, a 16-year-old high school student making her debut as an author. While the book falls within the fantasy genre, it caters more towards upper middle school readers, specifically 4th or 5th graders.

Eden's writing style is accessible to elementary students, with a limited use of tricky words, making it suitable for a younger audience. However, I noticed the inclusion of some strong language, such as the word "bastard," which might warrant consideration for parents and educators.

As a teacher, I found myself occasionally grappling with the dialogue, as it was at times confusing to discern the speakers. Despite this, I believe Eden shows promise in storytelling, and with continued practice, she can refine her skills.

In supporting young aspiring writers like Eden, we contribute to the cultivation of their passion for literature. I look forward to witnessing her growth as a writer and the evolution of her storytelling abilities. "Age of Fire: Rise of the Warriors" may not be flawless, but it serves as a commendable starting point for a budding author.

I started and finished it in the same day if that tells you anything about how good it is lol. It was such a fun read! It was so easy to be transported into the world of dragons and be super jealous that I don’t have one!

I am beyond impressed and blown away that such a young author wrote such an incredible book, and formatted and edited it herself! While there were a few mistakes here and there, the story made them barely noticeable! The author did an amazing job!

For a young author, this is AMAZING! I love the plot, the characters, the world, and everything about it! Ronan is honestly amazing. Lyra and Ares's plot and characters HAVE. MY. HEART! This is such a great fantasy book!

I love the whole plot and adored the dragons(I love dragon-fantasy books SO MUCH) and this book just made me so happy to read.

It was a quick read, so if you like or don't like that keep this in mind. I loved how Ares and Lyra met in the arena, and absolutely DESPISE Fyku(poor Lyra!!). Morwen is such an interesting villain and I'm interested to learn even more about her!

My favorite part in this entire book was when Lyra met Ronan at the cliffs. I reread that scene so many times before finally forcing myself to move on. He's awesome, and I love the goofy bickering that goes on between Area and Ronan. It's so silly and I love it!

But, as most books tend to have, there are a few issues/critiques I had with the story that I will do my best to RESPECTFULLY share(these are my opinions, keep that in mind!):

My biggest issue with this book was not the spelling or grammar issues(for self-editing, Eden Ross did amazing with that btw) but the thing that bugged me the most was Ada and Phoenix's relationship. It seemed so rushed in the beginning, with them being practically strangers and becoming really close friends. I understand why Eden Ross chose to hurry the relationship in the beginning, but I feel like the author could've shown a little more development between the two of them.

My other critique with the book was the dialogue. Not necessarily THE dialogue, but I struggled so many times figuring out who was talking. I had to reread a scene three times at some points to understand who was speaking, and when someone would talk(this is just a random example that is not taken from the book!) it would go something like this:

Steve said, "I walked my dog today." Mia laughed.
"Was it hot out?" He nodded.
"Yes!"

This is in no way mocking or trying to be rude to the author, but with someone else's actions coming right after the first person's speaking made it really confusing to tell who was talking.

My last critique was the ways Eden Ross described them speaking. Many times I would see after a dialogue: "something-something about dragons," smirked Phoenix. I can get what the author was trying to say, but it just didn't make sense as a reader for me to see that. Instead of "smirked Phoenix" the author could've have done "Phoenix said with a smirk" or something similar.

I am in no way trying to come off as rude or disrespectful, and if my critiques came off as such I'm so sorry. These are just my opinions and ideas on how this young author can improve and I am so excited to get my hands on the second book! I can't wait to see what Eden Ross does with this world!!!

This debut by teen author, Eden Ross, was seriously astonishing! The characters really take on a life of their own and the lore and world building was excellent, if a little confusing in the beginning, which is to be excpected by a fantasy of this level. I loved learning about the dragons and all their different personalities, and I am so excited to see where the story continues! If you love How to Train Your Dragon and Lord of the Rings, this book is for you!

First of all, what a great book! I loved the world and the whole HTTYD vibe that it had, as that was a big favorite of mine growing up. The characters were all very cute and I loved how they eventually met each other in pairs, inevitably falling for each other. Lyra was definitely my favorite character because she seemed the most developed and I liked watching her break free from her old life. Definitely looking forward to reading the next book!

I do have to say it was very hard to picture things often, as it wasn't really described. I often found myself confused because there was a lot of info dumping at times or underexplaining. In the end, I was able to piece things together. It did feel extremely rushed in the beginning and therefore the characters felt underdeveloped. The characters did also seem a little immature at times, or just a little off to what was happening, but that definitely got better as the book progressed. I really loved these characters and I can't wait to see what happens when they're all together.

In the end, it really was a great book and I'm looking forward to everything Eden Ross writes in the future. I found myself wanting to keep reading this book to see what happened next. The next one is one I'm eagerly anticipating!!

If you're thinking about picking up this book, I definitely recommend giving it a shot!

Absolutely loved it!!! Such inspiring characters and thank you Eden for giving me the motivation to start writing my own book as a teen author! Thank you!

5/5 Stars.
This book still blows me away. I feel that it was so much better than the first read and the characters seemed even better. I love the simplicity of the plot but the care the characters have for each other. Will always recommend.
Can't wait to start the next book!

I randomly found this author and her book while surfing Instagram one day and was intrigued by this story of a group of misfit kids and their dragons trying to do some good in a world that is pretty messed up. We live in a world where a lot of bad things happen and I love cheering on the underdogs. This book was written and self-published by a sweet young author. I think she did an incredible job with this story. I am very excited to see what Eden Ross writes next.

I absolutely love the different character arcs and how you were able to blend them into pairs in this book, and set up them all joining together in the next book!

And the relationships between the characters✨✨✨✨✨!!!!!

However, I really liked the story, but some of the choices made in editing, and until I got used to the writing style made it a bit hard to get into at first, but overall, an awesome debut book, would recommend.

Also P. S. The little subtle references to HTTYD and other books/movies weren't missed on me and I loved those too!!!!

This was much more than what I thought it’d be from Eden Ross’ edits! I love how each island has their specialties, and the world-building is great!

“I like watching a well-deserved execution. But then again, I also like performing them.” That line is still iconic after already hearing it.

One of the best books I've read in a while. A lot of professional writers don't write to this level of clarity or plot. I was in a book hangover from Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and this scratched the itch!

A great book by an amazing teen author who definitely knows how to market her books! I loved the characters and the world building was spectacular.

My only criticism is that with so many different povs, it was hard to keep track of what was happening with different characters.

Overall, this is a strong debut from a young author with plenty of potential. It’s no easy feat to write such an epic fantasy book with so many perspectives.

Lyra was one of my favorite characters. She’s flawed and driven by her trauma, but her character arc was compelling. Her personal growth felt well-developed and authentic, making her journey all the more rewarding. I do hope that we’ll see a little more softness from her in the next books, though.

The world-building was impressive. Ross’s creativity shines through in the intricate fantasy world, particularly with the different types of dragons and people and their unique characteristics. I often found myself pausing to appreciate how clever and detailed these elements were.

A few personal critiques:

I would’ve liked to see more consequences for Ares and the others after drinking to excess (though I could be misremembering that part. Maybe they didn’t actually get drunk..?) and playing drinking games. While I understand that drinking can be used as an escape and reflects reality, showing some repercussions—such as being ill-equipped for battle due to hangovers or facing danger because of impaired judgment—could have added more depth and realism. Given that the story targets a young adult audience, highlighting consequences might have strengthened this aspect.

Additionally, there was some strong language, including terms like “bastard” (outside its historical context) and “wh—e” directed at a woman. While this might fit certain narrative moments, it’s worth noting for readers sensitive to such language.

"The Age Of Fire" was a fantastic read! I was so genuinely happy to find a clean book that didn't feel too young.

The characters were all relatable in their own ways
And well developed!

I had some trouble getting into the book in the very beginning because of the heavy world building, but that was soon resolved when I realized how in depth the world Eden Ross has created really is!

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. I'd say it's probably appropriate for 13 and up with the only issue being a bit of language.

Overall this was an amazing book that has worked its way up to my top ten favorite books!

Eden Ross did such an amazing job with this. The plot was incredible and while there were of course spelling and grammar mistakes that's just what happens when you self edit and publish.

🩷Ada and Pheonix🩷:
We love them🩷 They are so cute and perfect for each other! "What are you thinking about Ada?" "How happy I am that I met you" 😊 They adorable. In the beginning I thought they would be my favorite ship but Lyra and Ares...

❤️Lyra and Ares❤️:
The enemies to lovers will always be a favorite! I love how much of a simp Ares is❤️

This series has been sitting on my wishlist ever since I started following the author on Instagram, and I finally managed to sit down and read book one.

PLOT
The story leaps right into lots of excitement and action, and it's hard to put the book down once you've picked it up (I often found myself reading late into the night). There were what felt like a lot of moving pieces at the start, but as you read they slowly come together in a very satisfying way.
The plot progresses very quickly, but not so much that it's difficult to follow everything that's happening. There's lots of suspense and adventure packed into this book, with strong themes of friendship and self-discovery wound throughout.

WRITING
Ross' writing is very fast-paced and direct (it sort of reminded me of the style of the Scythe trilogy), while remaining very magical and fun to read. Her writing style is very strong, laced with comedy and romantic elements that make it all the more engaging.
I found myself wanting more vivid or in-depth descriptions, but that's definitely a personal reading preference.
If I had to nit-pick anything, it would be that there were some small grammatical or formatting-related errors here and there, but they rarely disrupted the flow of the book; besides, such things can slip under any author, editor, or agent's radar, and it doesn't make the book any less impressive. Eden did all of this writing and editing herself, and it turned out beautifully.

CHARACTERS
There were a lot of characters to keep up with, and it took me an little bit to pair names with the right people (Kaija, Kilic, Kaida, and Kai made my head spin, but I figured it out). The characters feel very well established, and they differ from one another in unique ways. Some interactions felt a little unrealistic, almost as if the characters were too trusting or too quick to believe one another in this world of war, but they all still manage to maintain their beliefs and stay true to themselves. So far, Phoenix, Ares, and Lyra are my favorites (I'm starting to like Blair, too, and I can't wait to read more of her). I think Phoenix is my overall favorite, and I'm so excited to see how he changes and grows throughout the series.

FINAL THOUGHTS
An incredible debut from this author, full of magic and adventure and perfect for any reader. It's marketed as YA, although I definitely feel like Middle-Grade readers would enjoy the story as well; it's an excellent example of clean high fantasy, and I think it can be expected that this author will continue producing amazing works for enjoyers of that genre.
The Age of Fire: Rise of Warriors is perfect for readers who enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon, Lord of the Rings, The Traitor's Game, and Endling.
I'm so excited to read the next two books in this series!

Age of Fire: Rise of Warriors was by no means bad, but I did have a few problems with it that are pretty typical of the writings of young authors. There were some pretty good little nuggets in this book, too, of course.
Let's start there. I love the sibling bonds between some of the characters, because you simply don't see that in books these days. I'm also a sucker for animal companions, and there are plenty of those in the form of dragons. Also: dragons. Always a bonus. (Although, I do wish they got a little more of the spotlight). Some of the other relationships between characters were sweet, too, and I can't wait to see more of them.
Some of what I didn't like has to do with formatting, which really only bothers me because I'm a graphic designer. To the average person, the larger font and dotted lines for scene breaks probably don't bother them. The rest have to do with the actual writing.
There are some pretty big info dumps in this book. Personally, I prefer books where information is fed to me in bits, not in a huge paragraph. I'd also have loved it if some of the information about the dragons and their specific breeds was presented as we met each breed, not all in one place at the beginning. I do see why Ross made this choice, however.
There were some moments that seemed out of character, and I don't think the motivation for Lyra to stay loyal to the man who trained her (whose name escapes me in this moment) was strong enough. Ares and Mera *spoilers-ish* kind of just forget about each other for a hot minute. There are a few characters with similar names, too, that confused me.
There were a few points of confusion that may have just been my fault through accidently skipping lines. Lyra's dragon sort of disappears, and there Phoenix mentions something that happened with Ada that I don't remember reading.
Everything happens so fast in this book. There's a lot of summary, and the pacing is really, really fast for this complex of a story. I would have loved if it were longer and took some more time to develop character bonds, especially those of the main characters and their dragons.
I enjoyed this book, and I will be reading the sequel, but it is fair to note that this book reads like it was written by a highschooler. That's not to say that it's bad, that's just to say that Eden Ross has a whole lot of potential to grow, and I'm excited to see where she goes from here. If you're on the fence about reading this book, I would implore you to do so. It's a compelling story that you won't regret taking a few hours to read :)

“Blair jumped up and used her fire powers to fly there as quickly as possible.”
I swear any kid over the age of 11 should not be reading this.

“I started working on The Age of Fire when I was about eleven years old, and what started as a middle-grade stand-alone chapter book..”
you didn’t have to tell us. it shows.

“what in the dragon scales”
what did i do to deserve this

I am going to throw up if I read “Lavaboy” ever again

overall, the book is really cringe and basically just the average maladaptive daydreaming (scenarios you make in your head before you go to sleep) put into writing

writing was very rushed, could’ve stretched it to at least another 100 pages and i wouldn’t have complained if i knew this was the 209 page version

dialogue was super confusing, like if Lyra says something, next to her line it will say Ares snickered or whatever and because of that i didn’t know what was going on half the book

in my honest and complete opinion, you should’ve just posted it on wattpad

This book was very disappointing. I think it had potential with the plot and it was clear the author had put a lot of thought into her world building but it was also clear that she was not a seasoned writer.

The dialogue was cringey and the story was written very poorly. I think most of the characters were fairly likable ( aside from Ares whose arrogance and overall personality drove me insane) but we really didn’t get much depth with them. They were all basically your average main chapter in a Disney coming of age movie. “ I don’t fit in” and “I wonder why I’m different than everyone”

I’d like to give the author benefit of the doubt. She’s very young and being a published author at her age is impressive. Although… I think she needs more practice not just with writing but with reading others’ works to get a better grasp of proper tempo, dialogue, description, word choice etc

Overall, I think maybe some younger readers around middle school age might enjoy this book but it has a fairly slow start so they will have to be patient.
