A party of wealthy hunters meet at the estate of Wayne Roman; the adventurer has procured for them a selection of exotic creatures, now roaming the expansive grounds.
The hunt and kill anything you can.
The the thrill of a lifetime.
The they're hunting you too.
In this tale of mad science and devastating horror, 'exotic' takes on a brand new meaning. Abominations stalk the grounds, deadly beasts with unfathomable origins - but are they the creations of a madman? Or something much, much worse?
Derek Heath is a UK horror author whose stories have appeared in multiple anthologies and magazines. Primarily an author of grisly creature features and traditional ghost stories, Heath's growing library of novellas and collections contain a wealth of horrifying tales.
I've been really enjoying the works of Derek Heath this year. Day of the Mummy and Night of the Bunny were both really fun creature features and I was VERY impressed by Dark Nights. Moondisc continues to showcase that Heath is a really solid foundational writer, though I do feel it is not his strongest overall story.
First off, I think the premise is really neat. It's a classic setup of a bunch of rich folks gathering at an estate to hunt exotic game. The hook here is nobody realizes just how exotic this game really is. The main character Henrietta - who goes by Henry - is dragged along by her parents and wants nothing to do with the proceedings but finds herself inextricably involved.
My primary complaint with Moondisc is that I wanted a lot more of it, which is actually kinda a good thing. I really liked this setup and the characters, and I wished Heath had expanded on it for a more substantial novel rather than novella. The drawback of the brevity is that some aspects of the plot felt quite rushed and the villains motivation felt a bit flat and hard to rationalize.
There are 2 twists at the end of Moondisc that both work really successfully and again, I just wish there was a little bit more to flesh the story out.
Moondisc a fun and very bloody book and a good time, but again not Heath's most complete work.
- holy shit this book was fantastic!!! I read this book in one day it was a fast paced twisted horror novel, this is my first book by Derek heath and I’m extremely impressed and excited to read more of his work. The story was fast paced and full of interesting and creepy creatures/creations with plenty on violence! The characters were amazing I loved the little romance between Henry and Darcy it was unexpected but adorable! The story it’s self was very well thought out and executed, the writing was very well done, easy to follow and a thrill to read. The book jumps between all the characters povs which was very entertaining and enjoyable!! And the twist at the end made me audibly gasp 🤭 I highly recommend checking this out! -
This was an impressive and twisted little horror novella! I’m always a sucker for a good wild story.
What starts off as a simple gathering at a wealthy estate to hunt game turns into something much deadlier.
This book gave me classic in Dr. Moreau and The Hunt vibes! The dialogue was great. It’s fast paced and a quick read that gives you just the right amount of suspense and terror. Honestly I think this book was really well written and could’ve been longer.
A decent read around spooky season or a quick little mad science horror novella with a plot that’s not too deep.
This was such a great little horror read! There were creepy creatures, gore and an ending I didn't see coming at all.
The characters were mostly unlikable except for a couple which made the gory deaths a bit better in my opinion. The fast pace also kept me turning the pages to see who would be taken out next and how.
I did buy a few other Derek Heath books along with this one and can't wait to read them.
3.5 rounded down. Quick enjoyable read with interesting descriptions of some creatures and a good amount of gore! Just wish the ending was a bit better.
