David Blanco’s Atypical is a noteworthy and heartwarming biography of a very special individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Throughout the book the author explores the changing dynamics of his very unique life experiences and the lessons learned through those experiences. In this book he bravely narrates how he confronted the harsh realities of his mental health journey.
The book is very interesting with all the stories he tells about his difficulties in social skills as a child, combating the suicidal thoughts, the moments when stress forces his mind to sever ties with reality and the moments of joys and sorrows. “Atypical” is not a typical biography, it is not just his life story. As the author himself says, “it's an unfiltered exploration of the challenges I face, the battles I wage, and the resilience that sustains me.”
The author has a very unique narrative voice. He is sometimes serious, sometimes naive, sometimes he is very understanding, sometimes funny, which keeps readers reading on his unique stories. I recommend this because it is really helpful to understand the unique mentality of an individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It opens a window into the atypical mindset of the autistic people around us whom we misunderstand very often.
